Chipman man charged with child sexual exploitation Michelle Pinon Editor

A Chipman man has been charged with child sexual exploitation. Thirty-three-year-old Marc Sicotte is one of eight Alberta men who are facing child sexual exploitation charges following an intensive seven month investigation by members of the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT). ALERT officers found

100,000 photos and videos of child sexual abuse on 85 computers and electronic devices that were seized between September 2014 and March 2015. According to ALERT media spokesperson Mike Tucker, investigators say some of the victims in the photos are estimated to be as young as six-months-old and depict extreme sexual abuse. The operation focused on high level targets, added Tucker, that were

sharing and distributing vast collections of child sexual exploitation photos and videos across a variety of peer-to-peer file trading networks. The accused range in age from 17 to 60-yearsold and have been charged with several offences including: possessing, accessing, and making available child pornography. The other men charged are: Colin Penner, 60, of Sherwood Park, Luis Bexiga, Daniel Clarke-Ferr, Brad Drummond, Michael

Hilles, Eduardo Ramirez and Keith Vittie, all from Calgary. “At any given moment tens of thousands of images are changing hands,” pointed out Tucker. “Over the past four years, the number of cases ALERT’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) team have increased by 40 per cent.” The challenges facing law enforcement are daunting in size and scope, and ALERT must focus on the biggest offenders with the most

graphic content. Tucker said facilitating the sexual abuse is helping to create the demand. Child porn is very prevalent, and Tucker said the sex tourism and sex trafficking trade in Alberta is on the rise. “On a personal level it’s horrific to think kids are being victimized. It’s sad to think, but that’s the reality we live with.” Tucker said there has to be open dialogue between parents and children. “You have to talk about sexual abuse.”

He suggests there is a “no secrets” rule and to implement some type of code or pass word between parents and children. Tucker also recommended people go to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s website. There is a link titled: The door that’s not locked. If anyone suspects child sexual exploitation they are urged to contract police or go to cybertip.ca.

Lamont teen earns two silver medals Michelle Pinon Editor Heather Nielsen dreams big, but the Lamont teen couldn’t have dreamed she’d win two silver medals at the North American Endurance Challenge. The 17-year-old, who rides out of the NightWind stables near Bruderheim, won a silver medal as a member of the Canada West team, and another silver medal in individual competition in the junior-young rider category during the international championship that took place in Millbrook, Ontario recently.

Going to the championships was something Nielsen and her coach and mentor Colleen DeVry had been working towards for the past three years, and they both had to qualify during several long distance races leading up to the big 75 mile event. Building herself and her horse was no easy task, and took time, energy, patience and perseverance to achieve. It wasn’t until they arrived in Ontario that DeVry told Nielsen to ride NightWind Indigo Bey in the team event. “It was a really big honour,” said Nielsen, and wound up to be “A pretty special

experience,” for both Heather and her ride. “She’s a good rider, and he’s an old hand,” said Colleen, who wanted Heather and her teammates to have the best opportunity for success in the event. The decision paid off as every member of the junior team was able to complete the 75 mile (120 km) course and finish second in the rankings. Nielsen also claimed the individual silver medal riding Nightwind’s Indigo Bey, a 13-year-old Arabian gelding. Heather was also very proud of Colleen who placed 10th out of 20 riders on

NightWind Indigo Infiniti in the senior team competition. Colleen also credits the entire NightWind team for their efforts. “They are really the lifeblood of a big event. “They help us at our vet checks (rest time), cooling and vetting the horses so we riders can get some much needed rest before we head back out on the trail.” For Heather, having Colleen by her side was invaluable. “I consider her one of my close friends. She has taught me how to be focused, driven, and pushes my limits. I probably would-

n’t have gotten this far without her.” The path to success has been a long and arduous one, with a

lot of emotions shed, but for Nielsen and DeVry they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Bruderheim Byelection candidates Michelle Pinon Editor Voters in Bruderheim will be going to the polls on Tuesday Sept. 22. Before that happens, voters will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from candidates Darby Dunn and Judy Schueler during a public forum that will be held Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Bruderheim Community Centre. The two candidates are vying for one position on town council following the recent departure of Jillian Melnick which created the vacancy. Dunn moved to Bruderheim with her husband Terry in the summer of 1986. Dunn laughs when she recalls that she started volunteering the day after moving to the community, volunteering in the beer gardens during Canada Day celebrations. She has been volunteering ever since her arrival, and is a past member of Lioness Club,

agricultural society, and recreation board. Dunn served 15 years with the Lioness Club and five years with the Lions Club, and recently received her 20 year service pin. She is also Past District Governor of Lions Clubs. Dunn recently retired and at 70 years of age shows no signs of slow-

Darby Dunn ing down. Now that she has some extra time to commit to public service, she wants to help make Bruderheim an even better community. Dunn said she would like to see more businesses

come to town as well as seniors transportation, more programs and activities for youth, and would like to help raise money for a new community hall once the ice plant fundraiser is completed. “I have to keep busy,” said Dunn who is hoping to contribute to the community in a different way. I love this community. It’s already a great community but maybe I can make a difference.” Giving back to the community and making a difference are the main reasons Judy Scheuler is running for a seat on town council, and because she has a flexible work schedule as a home inspector, she said she has the time to commit to the position. Scheuler has volunteered with various organizations over the years, and has an extensive background and experience in research and planning in farming and ambulance services. “My interests lie with protective services.” She

has knowledge and experience in all those areas and is very familiar with developing policies, procedures and bylaws. Scheuler said she is a good listener and problem solver, and has a fresh “outside of the box” thinking that she believes will serve her well in public office. There will be an advance poll on Friday, Sept. 18 at the Bruderheim Community Centre from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Voting on election day, Tuesday, Sept. 22 will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Bruderheim Community Centre.

Opinion Letter to the Editor

System broken or bureaucratic bullying? Dear editor, It’s not hard for me to believe in the Canada Revenue Agency scam by phone. Ever start a corporate company? On a recent Monday I had the privilege of sitting through medical tests for my 93-year-old neighbour at Sherwood Park. The Hamlet that calls itself Strathcona County (chicken and egg story), that sells off all their leftovers to Lamont County. Leftover calcium causes the same abrassive irritation to my truck as left over commissioners will to me and you. Any reason why an assessor from Sherwood Park set our rates? They have paved roads, roadside garbage

pickup, and rural mail delivery paid by taxes with the help of refineries that belong to Strathcona County. The time spent in the waiting room prompted reading the Independant Weekly; the independant politician, self advertising, self owned, promotional paper. His (James Ford) names Harper, grouping him with Mark Twain, Pierre Trudeau, Gypsey Rose Lee, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton as liars so we should not vote for Harper. By the way, he forgot Jean Cretien who couldn’t help that government money and relatives built a golf course around his hotel. Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair think it’s ok to kill unborn babies or euthanize a 93year-old person that worked through depressions, crop failures, hard times

The Lamont Leader

with borrowed money and taxes, handing the best country in the world to his own well educated children and bureaucrats on a free ride now collecting taxes from his children. But as far as they are concerned he is no longer useful to society. The 93-year-old man must be the only one that doesn’t pay taxes on his pension. My hope is that Ford’s second thought will be that the future Prime Minister be to choose who gets to be the pawn and will not be pushed around by the same ego powered power hungry, greedy bureaucrats. The cowards that occupy the same desks in the same cubicals with security at the front door, impossible to reach by phone, only to collect pay and bureaucratic pensions. More money will not resolve problems especially

when handing it to Morgentaller, but more intelligence will. Obama knew about Canada’s recession before we did. An exerpt from Michael Magazine from December 2014 states, “The plan of the US Department of Defense was to invade seven countries of the Middle East in five years.” So they have their own dirty oil stained by war and how about the Governor of Wisconsin who wants to rebuild the Berlin Wall between Canada and the USA and no pipelines. If your assistant needs an assistant to do your job, we can’t afford you. Alec Babich

From Where I Sit: Some Action Verbs

By Hazel Anaka I got to remembering some news from this summer and decided that sometimes, life can best be defined by adjectives. I’m proud: that I was able to (successfully) program a seventy-dollar universal remote

when the original began spazzing and sputtering during my binge watching of The Mindy Project. I had to keep my thumb on the play button to keep the images from hopping and skipping. This new unit now controls the smart TV, the satellite receiver, and the DVD player. I’ve come a long way, baby. I’m horrified: that a pair of Canadian siblings from Saskatchewan got their fifteen minutes of fame for being stupid. I can’t understand what possesses some people to do mindless/insensitive/criminal things when on vacation, when they drink, when they’re young and immature, when they’re (fill in with appropriate justification). I don’t know which of those factors were at play when these people chose to strip on a Malaysian mountaintop but my, their parents

must be proud. And siblings, yet….ewww. That’ll be great when a prospective employer Googles a background check. I’m heartbroken: when a fallen police officer is laid to rest in a regimental funeral. Cst. Daniel Woodall was murdered by a man with mental health issues in what is becoming a much too frequent occurrence. My fear is that we will become desensitized by the frequency of these murders. We can’t let that happen. We mustn’t get used to the images of the women widowed, the children left fatherless, the parents and siblings left bereft. Police officers who daily risk it all to do their jobs deserve our respect and gratitude, even when they come safely home. When they pay the ultimate sacrifice, our gratitude must be made

visible. Whether that means signing a book of condolences, tying a blue ribbon, laying a floral tribute, donating to a fund, or thanking a police officer. I’m pleasantly surprised: that during the last of the Unique Lives speaker series, Shirley MacLaine was so damn good. I feared she’d be flaky and irrelevant, past her prime. The evening began with her narrating an hour-long montage of

still photos and movie clips. (Though there were too damn many dancing clips. If we saw those gams once, we saw them thirty times.) She had no formal presentation but spent the rest of her time taking questions from the audience. Person after person lined up at the mic to tell her how she and her books had changed their lives. She had two grown men leaping onto the stage for a hug, a kiss

and a butt grab. She made sense. She’s a fine example of someone who has aged well. Hers is a life well lived. Other times, maybe some action verbs would do the trick. I’ll continue learning technology because I must. I’ll resist the urge to desecrate other people’s countries and beliefs. I’ll thank a police officer first chance I get. And hopefully I’ll grow up to be a great old broad, from where I sit.

Local fire departments were all kept busy this past week with numerous fire calls. One of the fires was captured via aerial photography atop Township Road 540 and Range Road 182.

Deadly Jimsonweed invading crops Even though there have been no confirmed cases of Jimsonweed in Lamont County, Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak is asking producers to keep a close eye when they are swathing and combining canola for signs of the deadly and poisonious plant. “To the best of my knowledge there are no cases in Lamont County, stated Eleniak on Sept. 8. Since the information on

Jimsonweed has gone viral, all municipalities have been notified. According to Nicole Kimmel, a Weed Specialist with Agriculture & Forestry, Jimsonweed has been reported recently in Barrhead, Leduc and Westlock Counties while producers are swathing canola. Kimmel said the weed can also be present in wheat and barley crops. Jimsonweed (a.k.a Devil’s Trumpet) is a serious weed in cultivated land in the United States and eastern

risk for poisoning in livestock feed. Eleniak urges producers to call the county if they see anything odd. Personnel will come on site to conduct assessments.

Canada. Now it is migrating to other regions of the country. “The plant has toxic effects that have resulted in death to livestock and humans that ingest it. The plant is described as having smooth thick red to purple stems that can reach two meters tall. Leaves have irregular toothed margins 10-20 centimetres long. Seed pod is two to five centimetres wide, has spines, is egg shaped and may contain up to 600700 seeds per capsule. The seed capsule will explode expelling the seeds once mature, and has a distinctive sour repulsive odour. Jimsonweed should be pulled from fields prior to swathing down. Once cut the seed capsules may mature into viable seeds for next year. Kimmel said it is critical that producers wear gloves and long sleeves and double bag the plants for disposal in the landfill. “Do not compost. Do not burn, as this will release toxins in the air and may cause secondary poisoning. Kimmel went on to say, “In this year of feed shortages, canola stubble should not be baled up for feed where plants have been found. These practices will increase

Howard, Rick, Ken, Carol, and Pauline were all invited to attend a special family activity by current owners Mike and Charlene, on Walter Nowicki’s homestead north of Hilliard on Saturday, August 8. The guests didn’t know Mike and Charlene were hosting mud throwing on the old log barn that Walter built back in the fall of 1950. Mike has set about restoring the barn to its former state. During a tour of the homestead, Mike said several of the buildings on the property had deteriorated too much too salvage, but the barn was not one of them, and set about restoring the log barn recently. Mike even took a mudding workshop at the Ukrainian Village to give him a better idea into the clay, sand and straw mixture that is used to fill in the gaps between the logs as well as coat the exterior of logs. “You use one part clay, one part sand and one part straw,” explained Mike, who has lived

on his grandfather’s homestead with Charlene since July of 2008. Recently retired, Mike has begun the restoration process, and he points out that the barn was built with the logs running vertically rather than horizontally with a wooden brace notched in diagonally for support. Mike began by replacing the old cedar shingles with new ones this spring. Then he attended the special workshop, and began to mud the inside of the barn. With the help of his cousins they have been able to add more mud. Of course Aunt Pauline, now 84, is not able to pitch in physically, but was more than happy to bring out her famous perogies, cinnamon buns, and chocolate cake for the special celebration. Aunt Pauline and her late husband Joe held their wedding dance in the brand new log barn on Oct. 21, 1950. “It was so new no animals had been housed there yet,” noted Mike. Mike and Charlene have also been able to salvage a few things from the house before it was torn down. One of the items is the original farmhouse stove that

has been clean up and installed in the couple’s summer kitchen. Charlene says she’ll need to do a few tests to make sure the heat is just right when she is ready to can her preserves. One year Charlene fashioned a coat hook out of utensils that were in the house, and gave them away as Christmas presents. In the hay loft of the barn there are several cupboards, tables, and benches that have been salvaged as well. The couple even managed to find a place of prominence for the home’s original cornerstone. Mike hopes to finish the barn restoration project in the fall of 2016, “depending on how many other projects he has to do” says Charlene with a bright teasing smile. Mike has many childhood memories of the homestead and his grandfather as he lived just down the road from his grandfather. Mike describes Walter as a kind, intelligent, deeply religious man who enjoyed singing. Today, I am sure Walter is looking down from above and singing a song of gratitude to his family who are preserving their family history one handful of mud at a time.

Mike and Charlene stand beside the original stove.

Andrew School welcomes new teachers Andrew School welcomes three new teachers as we begin a new school year. Each were asked to provide a little bio on themselves so please read ahead as we introduce Ms. Tabitha Vincent, Mr. Kyle Hazlehurst, and Mr. Jesse Gobbels.

My name is Tabitha Vincent and I’m thrilled to be teaching grade 5/6 at Andrew School. I can’t wait to learn more about the students and the community of Andrew; but first a little about myself. I graduated from the University of Alberta with an Elementary Education degree and have been a teacher for the last five years. A few

years ago, I was able to combine my passion for travel with my love of teaching and spent a wonderful year working in Australia. Besides travel a few of the other things I enjoy are yoga and running. I hope to spark students’ curiosity and excite them about the wonderful world of learning!

Kyle Hazlehurst is excited to take over the position of Athletic Director/Phys Ed Teacher/CTS Shop Teacher for the upcoming school year. Kyle is a lifelong athlete and coach. He has been teaching in Elk Island Public Schools for the past 4 years, as well as

coaching high level volleyball for the past 12 years; including founding his own Men’s Volleyball Club in Sherwood Park, “Park Elite Volleyball.” He is excited to be calling Andrew home for the foreseeable future. In addition to his teaching roles, Kyle is very excited to be coaching multiple teams for the Wildcats this year. Anyone looking to volunteer or sponsor the Wildcats this year, please do not hesitate to contact Kyle. Go Burgundy!

My name is Jesse Gobbels. I will be teaching all the Junior & Senior High Sciences (Science 7 & 8, Biology &

Physics), plus a little Senior High Math. I grew up in Beaumont, then when I was nineteen I moved, with my parents, out to Wabamun Lake. I have done several small jobs over the years while I worked my way through school. I was at Grant MacEwan and the University of Alberta. I enjoy working on automotive projects and learning new ways of doing something. I have also been trying to adopt a ‘yes’ attitude when it comes to trying new things, along with going travelling. Andrew School has two familiar faces in the office but they each have a new role this year. Mr. TJ Kennerd is our new principal and Mr. Greg Cruickshank is our new assistant principal. We welcome back all our staff and especially our students. Have a wonderful school year!

The Farmers Advocate Office (FAO) is collecting surface lease, transmission line, siesmic, and pipeline right of way agreements from landowners, in order to create interactive maps with information on projects and compensation values paid to landowners. On completion, these maps will better enable landowners to understand what is fair and typical compensation for their area of the province, for specific projects.

With the ever-increasing demand for accurate age determination in Canadian cattle, Age Verification provides an effective and internationally recognized Age Verification Process. Lamont County Agricultural Service Board is a third party agent for the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency. Due to the current drought situation, many producers may be moving cattle to auctions earlier than normal. As age verification needs to be done before selling, please be aware that you will need a minimum of 1 week to process certificates. A Premise ID number issued by Alberta Agriculture is required for age verification. For questions or more information contact Alberta Agriculture at 780-310-3276, or Lamont County ASB at 780895-2585.
