Create a virtual team for the Kids Help Phone walk (NC) Being a young person isn’t always easy. Concerns about friendships or dating, health, exam stress, cyberbullying, or moving to a new school, along with mental health struggles or even thoughts of suicide can all be a part of their world. “We always talk about ‘being there’ for kids, because we are,” says Alisa Simon, VP of Counselling Services and Programs at Kids Help Phone. “Kids today deal

with so many complex issues, and they don’t always have support networks in place, or the ability to speak to a safe, caring adult or a professional counsellor. Kids Help Phone ensures help is always there for young people five through 20 – we’re literally open 24/7/365.” In May, the organization celebrates its 25th anniversary, and is inviting people across Canada to support its annual kickoff to Mental Health

Week in Canada, the Walk so Kids Can Talk presented by BMO (walksokidscantalk.ca). “We have a ‘Be a hero’ theme this year,” says Simon, “and we’re really excited about it. “We’re encouraging people to come out with friends, coworkers, and family members to enjoy a great day outdoors while pledging their support and helping to

create a better world for kids. “People love the Walk – it’s a really fun event, very inspirational, and they know they’re contributing to a great cause. The funds raised cover a significant portion of the revenue needed to keep our service available.” Kids Help Phone’s 5K Walk, Canada’s largest supporting child and youth men-

tal health, will take place at dozens of sites across the country on Sunday, May 4. Unable to join in on Sunday, May 4, 2014? Do you live too far from a Walk site to participate? You can still be a part of Canada’s largest event supporting child and youth mental health and well-being by "walking" virtually. Virtual walkers raise money without

attending an actual Walk. You can even walk virtually in a group. By being a virtual walker, you join thousands of others coming together to make a difference for kids, teens, and young adults struggling with problems - big and small - across Canada. Visit www.walksokidscantalk.ca to sign up, or pledge, today.

Building a fairy garden, whether you use all-natural elements, or add a bit of whimsy with the addition of fairy housing, statuary, or even fairy dust, is a fun, and inexpensive way to bring some green to your home. Patricia Hanbidge Saskatoon Horticultural School of Design

One of the latest things to create in your garden is a fairy garden! You might be asking yourself, fairy gardens...? Fairy gardens are gardens that everyone can fall in love with, both young and old! So what exactly makes up a fairy garden? Fairies, as we all know are ethereal creatures, perhaps we might imagine them as tiny, green, female winged spirits. It might conjure up that when you meet a fairy, perhaps you will be granted three wishes... and this makes fairies a symbol of luck and happiness. Fairy gardens are built to lure these tiny little creatures into your home, and of course bring with them a fair portion of luck!

Of course, in order to keep them as part of your home, it is necessary to provide a miniature garden that allows these mystical creatures to be happy and find a suitable place of rest. If you are not sold on the mystical creature idea, perhaps you just want to create a fairy garden because it is fun and can take up very little space. In fact, your fairy garden could even exist right in your house or patio. Some of the great features are that a fairy garden can be very inexpensive, will bring nature to you, and will also teach patience, care of other living things, and bring an element of fun into your lives. It is a good activity for all ages, from the wonder of young children, to the sentimental feeling of a world that is just a little bit better from the

older folks. Your own fairy garden could be a terrarium on your coffee table, an old wheelbarrow on your patio, or a little part of your outdoor living space. To create this space you need to begin with flowers. Humans of all ages and fairies all love the romance and beauty of a flower. To complete the balance of your fairy garden dream, include some ferns and other greenery to create potential secret hiding places for the fairies you attract. You just use any little plants that you can trim to keep small and in proportion to your garden There are a lot of house plants that will work and annuals that will work perfectly, even some herbs. Another thought to creating a special place for the little people, you

need to include some water. A bird bath to cater to the creatures that are closer to our earth world could be easily incorporated in an aesthetic fashion. Stepping stones are another nice feature outdoors, as it helps you, the steward, to step carefully so as to not harm any of the little creatures See FAIRIES P9

Let spring cleaning make a real difference

This spring when you are cleaning winter away, consider donating gently used items to local organizations and help out those in need. Spring is here and that means spring cleaning for many people. In keeping with the theme of spring, some people look upon this task as chance for a fresh start and new beginning. This spring, when you are cleaning your home, and perhaps purging it of items collected throughout the year, envision this, and, envision how your spring cleaning may support the fresh start of someone in even greater need. Consider donating items you may no longer need or use, rather than simply throwing them

away. There is a need for such donations in our own communities. You may drop items off at places such as Viking’s New to You store, or local food banks. Your spring cleaning may not only make your home spic and span, but help out a neighbour as well. If you wish to donate beyond our streets you may look to the Women’s Shelter in Camrose, shelters and programs in Edmonton such as Youth Empowerment Support Services, Hope Mission, the Mustard Seed, or, research places which

take donations in kind, to find where you would most like to donate or need is greatest. Each group’s website or contact person may inform you of what items are most needed. For example, winter and men’s clothing may be a high need, and personal

hygiene products, practical household items, blankets, movies, games, and books which are new or gently used are welcome at most of these sites. So, as you clean out your closets, pantries, and cupboards, imagine the difference you can

Fairies Continued from Page 7

who also inhabit your outdoor space. Once you have some of the basic essentials in place, it is time to build the fairy portion of the garden. Suitable fairy houses can either be purchased ready-made or you can build them from materials from your favourite build-

ing or craft store. You can even paint rocks to look like cottages or castles. You do not want a lot of houses, perhaps two or three, and a nice entrance door into a mature tree conjures up visions of Alice in Wonderland. Tiny table and chair sets, small mushrooms, and even some miniature critters can all be part of your fairy garden.

Use your imagination and let the child in you out to play! Remember that fairies are attracted by beautiful, natural things like water, flowers, animals, and of course, fairy dust. Perhaps you might like to create some fairy dust to sprinkle around your garden to make it just that much more attractive to your potential new fairies... imagine... enjoy.

Succulents are trendy Succulents are turning into the trendy plants of the season because they are not only beautiful but they are nearly indestructible. Mary McClennon of Kountry Klassics Garden Centre located of Highway 14 just past the “big horse” says a succulent is any plant with thick, fleshy water storage organs. “As a result these plants are very hearty. They are the type of plant that can be left unattended over a weekend and no harm will come to them,” she said. Succulents store water in their leaves, their

stems or their roots. These plants have adapted to survive arid conditions throughout the world. Succulents come in beautiful hues, adding just the right touch of colour to any landscape. Kountry Klassics has a variety of succulents to choose from as well as a wide range of pots suitable for creating attractive arrangements of any type of plants, including succulents. Mary said this planting season is very late this year and gardeners need to be patient. “It will warm up but for right now gardeners

should wait before purchasing bedding plants. “It is okay to pick up herbs which can be kept in a window but unless you have a small greenhouse or some other suitable place to store bedding plants, it is best to wait until the weather warms.” Despite the cool spring, Mary says things are busy at the garden centre. “We opened our doors on April 25 and we have been busy. On the opening day people came in their winter coats and put up with falling snow. “Spring will come. It will,” Mary laughs.

Unique planter ideas You don’t have to be real handy with tools to try this great idea to build a unique planter this summer. You will need minimal tools, a hammer and a hand saw or if you are comfortable using electric tools, a jigsaw, and an electric drill or a nail gun. What is really important is that you have the courage and determination to create something on your own. This planter is made from discarded pallets which may no be in the very best shape but must

have some planks which can be salvaged. Choose pallets which are in the best condition and which have not chemically treated. You can break up the pallets and use the planks to design a single (or higher) layered planter. You can raise the planter off the ground or build it flush with the soil. Or, you can use the pallet as is. With the pallet laying flat on the ground seal one end, the back and both sides of the pallet with landscape fabric,

doubled for strength, leaving one side open for soil and plants. Lay the pallet on its back (covered with fabric) and fill the pallet with compost and soil, sweeping any excess soil into the pallet openings. Place the bedding plants in the pallet openings. Once all the plants are in place, let the pallet lay flat for a week or so until the new plants have rooted into the fresh soil. The pallet can then be raised up to create a growing wall. The top of the pallet can be filled in with more plants.

Essential oils are centuries-old remedies for the soul Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Used by the early Egyptians and even mentioned in the Bible, aromatics and essential oils have been around for a very long time.

By the end of the 17th century, the profession of perfumery broke away, and a distinction was made between perfumes and the aromatics of the apothecary. By the middle of the 20th century, the role of

essential oils had been reduced almost exclusively to use in perfumes, cosmetics, and foodstuffs. The term aromatherapy was coined by a French chemist who See ESSENTIAL P16

Market prices look favourable for area farmers Jaimee Russnak Staff Reporter

Market prices are looking favourable for area cattle farmers and 4-H members. So far this spring, Alberta sales recorded an average price about 20 per cent higher than previous year, which bodes well for those in the cattle industry. This increasing trend is none too soon, either. Cattle prices dropped dramatically in 2003 and remained well below the cost of production for several years. Many area farmers suffered, some selling whole herds and leaving the cattle business altogether. Now, farmers and 4-H members may enjoy what may be a very profitable year, well deserved with the hard

work, time, and effort which goes into raising cattle. The beef industry is well on its way to recovery, which can only mean more positive contributions to local and world economies. You may support your local cattle farmers and 4-H members by attending Achievement Days and auctions in the surrounding areas this spring season. Beef and pork prices in the area have risen noticeable over the past months and experts say there’s every indication today’s strong prices will continue through 2014, due in part to tight cattle supplies in Canada and the U.S., a weak Canadian dollar, and low feed costs. However, with summer right around the corner, consumers will likely ignore the rising costs and enjoy the short barbecue season.

became fascinated by the therapeutic possibilities of essential oils. Current thinking is that essential oils have three distinct modes of relating to the human body, those being pharmacological, physiological, and psychological. Aromatherapy enthusiasts maintain that it is not simply the aroma which is important to the use of essential oils, but also the chemical interaction between the oils and the body. Guidelines in presentday aromatherapy state that it is best to use essential oils as external remedies only. As with anything, common sense is urged when trying out the therapeutic properties of essential oils, with special notice given to babies and children, and pregnant women, as well as people suffering from high blood pressure, heart problems, or any other medical concern. New users should also check safety data before using a new oil. Essential oils are easily absorbed into the skin, and can be used to treat a number of skin problems, like eczema, athletes foot, even as insect repellents. The use of essential oils for treatment of the

nervous system can be highly effective, with specific oils known to have a sedative effect, like chamomile or lavender, with peppermint and clove displaying stimulating effects. Essential oils are usually used with a carrier oil, a neutral way to dilute full-strength essential oils (which may be too harsh on skin), almond and grapeseed oils are popular as carriers, but sunflower, peanut, soya, or even corn oil can be used, while mineral oils are best avoided. A few drops can also be added to your favourite shampoo, and you can easily make your own custom-scented bath salts. Depending on the use, a solution can be effective using a ratio of essential oil to the carrier as low as one to three per cent, that is, three to five drops of essential oil per teaspoon of the carrier oil. Adding just five to ten drops of essential oil to your next bath can turn it into a relaxing, stressrelieving experience. Something that’s been around that long can’t be completely discounted, even if you think relaxing in an essential oil-scented tub does nothing but smell nice, there’s something to be said for enjoying simple pleasures.

How to create a rainwater harvesting system for watering your lawn and garden Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion. The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. Here is how to get started. * Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water. * Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of manufacturers offer prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected. * Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is surrounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system. * Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris. * Outfit the tank for overflow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. M a n y rainwater collection systems are designed with an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.

A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used

for gardens and other outdoor purposes. This water doesn't contain chlorine or

other additives, making it relatively clean and safe to use.

Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rain-

water collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.

Thinking of selling your house? Spring seems to be a typical time for people to test the housing market by listing their homes. Interest rates have remained low over the last couple of years, so more people have been thinking about taking the plunge before the rates start to rise. If you’re planning to sell your home, there are a lot of things to consider. Many factors can negatively impact your being able to attract buyers and ultimately get the price you want. Sometimes there’s not much you can do. If you started remodeling and didn’t complete the job, many people won’t want to take that on, even with a significant reduction in price. However, there are many relatively minor changes that may boost your home’s marketability. For example: If your interior or exterior walls are painted with bold colors or textures, it might be worth toning it down with a more neutral palette. If you can afford it, have your home professionally staged, since stagers know how to maximize space and show off a home’s strong points (while hiding its defects.) If you’re using your own furnishings, thin them out. Minimize personal photos and nicknacks - while they are meaningful to you, they can leave the appearance of clutter. Mismatched appliances, cabinetry and plumbing fixtures stand out like sore thumbs.

The same goes for worn floors or carpeting. Make sure your yard is well-tended and has at least basic landscaping. Overgrown weeds and abandoned junk don’t help your curb appeal. The same principle applies for the vegetable garden make sure it is weeded and neat. If there are empty homes in your area, work with your local council to have the exteriors maintained. Anything you can do to bring up the quality of the neighbourhood will improve your chance of selling.

Goodbye winter. Spring is here and that means warmer weather and longer days. As we move into this short but sweet season, here are some ideas to help you make the most of spring. Plant something. Whether it is a single flower, a tree, or a whole garden of vegetables, there is something to be said for nurturing something which can beautify the earth or support life. Gardening takes time and effort, but the satisfaction which can arise when you see the first sprouts or buds poking out of the dirt, or when your plant reaches full maturation is worth it. Get active. Take up a sport or perhaps volunteer to coach in your community. And of course, there is nothing like an invigorating walk, jog or bike ride during spring time. If you are an early riser, take advantage of the fact that the sun is starting to shine bright and early, or, if you would rather exercise to

unwind after a long day, you can enjoy the later hours of sunlight. Spring is all about new life; it is an excellent time to create some healthy lifestyle habits. Enjoy nature. Listen to the sounds of the birds as they sing songs of spring. Smile at the newborn animals. Notice the way the wind sounds as it rustles through newly budding leaves. Let yourself become mesmerized by the resurgence of colour after a long, dreary winter. Feel the sun upon your face when it shines. Be thankful for rainstorms; dance in it, curl up with a book by the window and listen to the pitter patter of the drops, and remember that rain sustains growth. Watch the sky for rainbows. See the beauty of the season all around you. Release your inner child. Fly a kite. Go on a picnic. Swing as high as you dare on a swing set.

Decorate your sidewalk with chalk. Make mud pies. Jump in puddles. When did we decide that splashing around in brightly coloured rubber boots was not acceptable once one reaches a certain age? This is one of the most wonderful spring activities; the noise is delightful, the feel of the mud squishing under your feet is satisfying, and it usually ends in a fit of giggles. Remember, you are never too old to be a little bit silly. Plus, these can be excellent family activities. So, this spring, rejuvenate, relax, and release your inhibitions. Breathe. Open up a window in your house to let the breeze in or go outside and take a deep breath of that fresh, crisp spring air. Let every breath refresh your mind, renew your spirit, and ready yourself for all the joys spring has to offer. Before we know it, spring will be gone. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Before hitting the road this summer, make sure your vehicle is in top working condition. Stop by for a complete spring tune-up.
