ANGUILLA C

ast your eyes over a map of the Caribbean and you could be forgiven for failing to spot Anguilla, but this tiny sliver of an island punches well above its weight. Its gorgeous beaches are the most obvious attraction, and they’re speckled with stunning boutique hotels and private villas. So it may come as a surprise to discover that this is not a place where travellers come to simply ‘fly and flop’. Anguilla has a fantastic foodie scene, from roadside shacks and beachside bistros to candlelit restaurants, and the crayfish and lobster are some of the best we’ve tasted. After dark, the island throbs with live music, and you can stay put and listen to afterdinner melodies at your resort, or head for the bars of Sandy Ground, where the rum punch flows and the reggae rocks the speakers. Anguilla is also a very safe and welcoming island, a place where everyone knows everyone, making it perfect for families. Kids of all ages can make a splash at the inflatable Aqua Park, learn to sail, or explore the shoreline on a night kayaking adventure, while adults may prefer waking up to a spot of morning yoga or hiking up to the island’s famous arch rock formation that juts into the glistening azure of the Caribbean Sea. Or why not take a boat out to one of Anguilla’s offshore cays for lunch, and snorkel amongst sea turtles and colourful fish.

RELAXATION & ADVENTURE IN

BARBADOS 10

BARBADOS

T

oday’s luxury travellers are increasingly focused on health and wellbeing, whether it’s through better nutrition, physical exercise or a focus on mindfulness and meditation. So it’s no surprise that Barbados has declared 2019 the ‘Year of Wellness and Soft Adventure’, showcasing what the island has to offer for those seeking a more meaningful travel experience.

WATER-BASED FUN Barbados is justifiably famous for its beautiful beaches, and the calm waters off the west coast are perfect for snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding and swimming with turtles. There are also some great spots for surfing, with good conditions year-round, or you can take to the water on a more relaxing catamaran cruise.

ADVENTURES ON LAND Back on dry land there are several ways to explore the island’s lesser-known interior, including horse riding, mountain biking and jet blading, while the popular island safari will take you off road in a 4x4. Don’t miss Harrison’s Cave, the island’s most famous natural wonder, with its spectacular stalactites and stalagmites. And runners from around the world can journey to the island to compete in the Run Barbados Marathon Weekend from 6th to 8th December this year.

RELAX AT A RESORT Our favourite hotel spas in Barbados include Sandy Lane, where you can enjoy facilities including a Rhassoul bath and a hydrotherapy pool, and the charming Coral Reef Club, where we highly recommend the Signature Fresh Lemongrass and Ginger Rub. The warm Caribbean sunshine and soothing rhythms of the ocean also make Barbados a great place to practise yoga and meditation, and many hotels now offer exercise classes featuring zumba, Pilates, spin and more.

We’ve always been huge fans of Blue Waters, but don’t just take it from us: this wonderful resort received the royal seal of approval in 2016, when Prince Harry stayed here during his tour of the Caribbean. We particularly love the newlyrefurbished Cove Suites, set apart from the rest of the resort and each boasting over 730 square feet of space. According to Which?, that’s the same size as the average new build home in the UK! If that’s still

not enough, how about the sprawling, 2,000-squarefoot Rock Cottage? Set on its own peninsula, this palatial retreat has five bedrooms, a kitchen and a gorgeous infinity pool, offering the ultimate in privacy and seclusion. You can also escape for some much-deserved pampering at the resort’s heavenly spa, which recently introduced a series of rejuvenating face and body treatments thanks to a new partnership with ila Spa.

The cottages are absolutely stunning, with Cottage 7 being the latest addition; this two-storey haven offers sweeping ocean views and access to a private cove. Words like ‘luxurious’ and ‘exclusive’ don’t really do justice to the Mandarin Oriental, Canouan. First of all, you need to get to Canouan Island, accessible only by private jet or Twin Otter propeller plane. Once you’ve arrived, prepare to be blown away by the pristine white sands, vivid turquoise lagoon and impossibly-Instagrammable infinity pool. The sumptuous suites are a vision in marble and Murano glass, with cuttingedge tech and a butler on hand for your every whim and fancy. EXPERIENCE SOMETHING SPECIAL

CORAL REEF CLUB BARBADOS

This refined resort is something of a Bajan institution, owned and operated by the O’Hara family for over 60 years. Many of the staff have been at the hotel several decades themselves, including head gardener Lloyd Richards, who leads a popular weekly tour of the beautifully-landscaped grounds. You can swap stories with the owners at their regular Monday night cocktail parties, and get to know some of the many repeat guests to whom the hotel is simply ‘The Club’. History and heritage does not mean old-fashioned, however: the hotel’s decor is elegant and contemporary, the Caribbean-inspired cuisine is exquisite, and The Spa offers wonderful treatments using products from Natura Bissé.

7 nights from £1,919 per person sharing a Garden Room Cottage including breakfast. OFFER: Stay 7 Pay 6. STAY: 08 May 24 May 2019.

THE SANDPIPER BARBADOS

Coral Reef Club’s sister hotel is smaller and more intimate, with a dedicated fan club all of her own. This beautiful beachside retreat has just 50 rooms and suites, beautifully decorated with splashes of Caribbean colour. It’s the little things that make The Sandpiper so special, like The White Company bathroom amenities and the refreshing sorbet delivered daily to your sun lounger. Dining at the highly-rated restaurant is a real treat, in a romantic setting surrounded by flickering torches and elegant koi ponds. And if you really want to push the boat out then take a look at the Beach House, a stunning three-bedroom villa set right on the sand.

J U M B Y B AY I S L A N D ANTIGUA

This 300-acre private island is peppered with palm trees, caressed by cerulean waters, free from cars and an ultra-luxurious escape for the discerning traveller to whom service and privacy are paramount. But how do you improve on perfection? That’s the challenge that faced new owners the Oetker Collection when they took over Jumby Bay in 2018, but we’re happy to say it’s looking better than ever following a multi-million dollar upgrade. Jumby’s interiors have been refreshed with subtle tones, rattan furniture and nautically-inspired flourishes. New additions include an Italian-style beachfront trattoria, a sparkling seafront infinity

pool and upgrades at the spa, including redesigned treatment rooms and a new steam room and sauna. The Estate House restaurant, set within an elegant 19th-century plantation house, also gets a fresh new look, and you can now enjoy a unique farm-to-table dinner under the stars at the island’s organic kitchen farm. Regular guests can relax safe in the knowledge that the old Jumby Bay magic hasn’t been dimmed; this remains one of the world’s most exclusive luxury resorts, with the same spectacular cuisine, beautiful natural setting and superb level of service that has always made this such a favourite of ours.

SUMMER SUN IN

ANTIGUA I

t’s safe to say life’s a beach on beautiful Antigua, a Caribbean island blessed with 365 beaches, coves and secluded bays - one to fill up every day of the calendar. It’s no surprise that it’s home to some of the most stunning resorts in the Caribbean, from boutique honeymoon hideaways to familyfriendly all-inclusives. With year-round tropical climes and a wealth of things to see and do, why not consider visiting the island during the summer months when there are fewer people and lower rates? Antigua Carnival runs from 25th July to 6th August this year, and it brings with it the chance to witness the island come alive in a kaleidoscope of colour and music as the ten-day festival spills out

onto the streets with parades, steel bands, fragrant food stalls and absorbing cultural events. The humble mango also takes centre stage on 6th July, as the two-day Antigua and Barbuda Mango Festival gets into swing at the Botanic Gardens. Celebrate all things mango-related, with the chance to taste and buy jams, pepper sauces, pastries, ice creams, candles and cosmetics.

A natural attraction not to be missed, from July to October, you’ll have the opportunity to watch sea turtles nesting on the beach or hatchlings making their way into the sea for the first time. No matter which time of year you choose to visit, the sunset party at Shirley Heights can always be counted on to bring tourists and locals together for a night of music, food and rum punch every Sunday night. You’ll find there’s a lot more to this island than just lazy days catching rays. A fabulous yachting scene, rich cultural heritage, sports on offer ranging from horse riding to watersports to cricket, and an eclectic variety of restaurants and food stalls mean Antigua’s never short of surprises.

JUST BACK FROM. . . Our team share a real passion for our beautiful destinations – all year round, we travel the globe to keep an eye on our favourite hideaways and seek out even more luxurious gems for our clients’ next dream holidays.

Having always enjoyed the vibe of Ibiza I thought it was time to dip my toe into the azure waters of Mykonos. It’s well known for its beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts, summer party atmosphere and wild nightlife. I spent five nights on the island and indulged in delicious food, witnessed epic sunsets, and experienced some of the best hotels the island has to offer. Myconian Utopia was one of my favourites and has stunning views of the Aegean Sea along with contemporary elegance that you’ll find hard to beat. Mykonos cast its spell over me on my first visit and I’m going back again this year towards the end of the season when it’s slightly quieter, yet the weather will still be lovely.

Relaxed, cool and unobtrusively modern is how I’d describe Zemi Beach House, a resort that effortlessly appeals to all ages and makes the most of its stunning seafront position on the jaw-droppingly-gorgeous island of Anguilla. Being shown around the various rooms and villas, I couldn’t hide my amazement at the chic and contemporary spaces, adorned with beach-inspired artwork, spacious walk-in showers, deep soaking tubs, and even private pools in some cases. The serene Thai House Spa is as zen as you can get, and true to its name, is set inside a 300-year-old Thai House transported over from Thailand in the 80s.

What I loved best about Ocean Two was the real warmth and friendliness of the staff – they make you feel really at home from the moment you arrive. The resort is set on a white sandy beach and there’s a selection of different rooms and suites to choose from, each with stunning ocean views. The suites each have fully-equipped kitchens so they’re perfect for families wanting to self-cater, although breakfast is included for all guests at Taste restaurant which also serves lunch, dinner and a tempting tapas menu. Kids will love the fresh coconut station on the beach and the complimentary ice lollies delivered poolside. My highlight, though, was the adultsonly rooftop patio which had a plunge pool where you could sip a cocktail and gaze out at views stretching all the way from Oistin’s Bay to Needham’s Point.

I recently stayed at the gorgeous Port Ferdinand with my family. The quality of the villa-style homes was secondto-none; they’re beautifully designed, with marble finishes and coral stone walls, and they each have spacious living areas, up to three en suite bedrooms, and outdoor dining and seating areas with views over the glittering marina and ocean. The homes are self-catering but you can add breakfast or half board, plus there’s an optional shopping service so you don’t have to worry about stocking up the fridge, and you can hire out a private chef to whip up something special. Alongside the freedom this style of accommodation affords, you have the added benefit of being within a first-class resort offering a concierge, maid service, and restaurants and activities close at hand. There are two restaurants here, including the bistro-style Dockside

at 13°/59° and The Quarterdeck Bar & Pizzeria which is set next to the infinity pool and serves cocktails and light lunches. The resort is perfect for people looking for family time away from any hustle and bustle; as well as a kids’ activity room, there’s an outdoor kids’ park, games room, golf simulator and sea turtle education programme. It’s not all for children and teens here though – I managed to spend some time pampering myself in the heavenly Sandbox Tree Spa, and the exclusive Nikki Beach club is located on property. We also spent some time at Port Ferdinand’s sleek sister resort Saint Peter’s Bay, which is just a complimentary water taxi ride away, where we had use of all the facilities. The beachfront homes there are incredibly spacious and have a hot tub on the balcony alongside stunning ocean views. We loved spending time on the beach where a medley
