If you want the beaches and the ocean views, but you’re also a passionate foodie who loves to try new flavours, cinnamon-scented Grenada could well be the place for you. Twelve degrees north of the equator, this is a sugar and spice island on which to spend lazy days in a hammock sipping on a nutmeg-infused rum punch. Life here is mellow, unrushed and fragrantly seasoned.
Less developed than many of the other Caribbean islands, Grenada bewitches with low-rise boutique hotels, laid back living and a lush rainforest interior that opens out onto beautiful white beaches and the indigo waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It’s home to heady hot springs, bustling markets, spice plantations, volcanic crater lakes and the striking Seven Sisters Falls. You’ll taste organically grown cocoa, strong local rum and a medley of cuisine infused with nutmeg, cinnamon, bay leaves and ginger. And whilst the resort restaurants offer elegant fine dining, the local restaurant scene is low key, made up of informal eateries with fantastic views, the menus augmented by the mouthwatering spices and fresh fruit available at every market.
If you’re simply looking to while away days on beautiful sun-soaked beaches, the iconic bay at Grand Anse is a huge draw, lying on the western side of the island and perfectly sheltered. The lesser known but equally beautiful Morne Rouge, lined with sea grape and almond trees, is a great place to swim and sunbathe. And if you’re after a true slice of isolated Caribbean life, charter a yacht to nearby Carriacou and play shipwreck for the day on Paradise Beach.
AROUND THE ISLAND
SEVEN SISTERS FALLS Take a rewarding hike to the Seven Sisters Falls, set high in Grenada’s Grand Etang National Park. The trails take you through beautiful rainforest and private plantations, see bird life and you may even spot an occasional monkey. The hike is well worth the effort as you’ll get to enjoy a refreshing swim in the natural pools at the base of the falls.
FORTS GEORGE AND FREDERICK Travel back to the 1600’s to visit historic Fort George and Frederick where you’ll get a glimpse of Grenada’s colourful past, as well as a panoramic view of St George’s, the island’s capital. Carry on to the National Museum and Parliament House, and end your day sampling the wide variety of delicious rum at the Westerhall Rum Distillery. TAKE THE HYDROFOIL TO CARRIACOU Many people won’t know that two smaller islands (Carriacou and Petit Martinique) near Grenada make up this spicy trio. Take a day trip over to beautiful Carriacou and enjoy some snorkelling off Paradise Beach followed by lunch in a local restaurant. ISLAND HOPPING Experience even more of the Caribbean by extending your Grenada holiday with a trip to romantic Saint Lucia. Our Travel Advisers can recommend hotels such as Rendezvous, just a short flight away.
UNDERWATER ADVENTURES
DIVING AND THE BIANCA C Divers are enchanted by the 50 dive sites, all within a short distance of the shore, endless coral reefs and awesome shipwrecks. Grenada is home to the Bianca C - the largest diveable shipwreck in the region. Known as the ‘Titanic of the Caribbean’ due to her sheer size and presence, this enormous cruise liner sank in 1961 and sits in 50 metres of water, looming eerily out of the gloom.
UNDERWATER SCULPTURE PARK Grenada is also the site of the world’s first underwater sculpture park, where British artist Jason deCaires Taylor has carved a series of haunting cement and steel sculptures that lie at the bottom of the shallow waters of a protected marine park just off Molinere Bay. There are now over 100 to explore as other artists have added to Jason’s work.
