WELCOME TO THE CARIBBEAN
DEAR FRIENDS September 2017 will be a month to be remembered in the Caribbean, sadly for all the wrong reasons. The Caribbean’s most unwanted visitors, hurricanes Irma and Maria, caused havoc on some of our islands, in particular Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Maarten, Dominica, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. We here in the Caribbean have come together to help our neighbours who are in process of rebuilding not only their islands but their livelihoods. For example, we established the Caribbean Tourism Recovery Fund, managed by Tourism Cares, a nonprofit organisation that has partnered with us to anchor the tourism industry’s recovery efforts in the Caribbean. Also, the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) launched the ‘One Caribbean Family’ initiative, encouraging hotels and travel professionals to contribute to the recovery through financial contributions and guest bookings. Through this program, we are also highlighting that the vast majority of Caribbean destinations were not affected by the storms and that the majority of hotels across the region are fully operational and open for business. We felt this was important because we realised that many people across the world did not fully understand the geography of our region. After all, the Caribbean region consists of 32 countries and spans over 1 million square miles. The distance between Nassau in the Bahamas and the island of Tobago is approximately 1447 miles which is almost identical to the distance between London and Athens in Greece. So let me therefore assure you, our future visitors, that our diverse and vibrant Caribbean and its warm and friendly people still await you and that there still are many places to go and to choose from. And before long, those islands which are currently on the road to recovery, will be eager to welcome you back, too. Thank you for travelling to the Caribbean.

A N T I G U A VISIT THE LAND OF 365 BEACHES Few places in the world evoke the sense of awe you feel when setting eyes on Antigua’s startlingly-blue waters for the first time. The saying goes that there’s a beach for every day of the year here. The reality is that many of them are so strikingly beautiful you’ll hardly be able to draw yourself away to explore another. With such a range of beaches to choose from, you’ll find ones that cater to all moods whether you want to nap under a parasol in complete seclusion, or surround yourself with a flurry of activity at one of the island’s livelier stretches of sand, rum punch in hand and calypso music drifting over the sands.
The fun continues beneath the ocean surface. You’ll marvel at the colourful kaleidoscope of tropical marine life swimming amongst the coral reef. Angelfish, nurse sharks, barracuda, rays, dolphins and turtles are just some of the creatures that inhabit these cerulean waters. You might even happen upon a centuries-old shipwreck slumbering beneath the waves. As well as beach living, there’s plenty of history here to immerse yourself in too. Take a trip back in time to Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last continuously-operating Georgian dockyard in the world. Explore
Dockyard National Park with its hiking trails winding their way amongst historic hilltop forts, rock pools and the ruins of old plantations. A place of such breathtaking beauty is sure to incite romance. In fact, Antigua is said by many to be the most romantic destination in the Caribbean. Glowing sunsets, long walks on the beach, intimate dinners for two and the most luxurious, indulgent accommodation make this a perfect destination for honeymooners or couples looking for somewhere extra special.
TOP ANTIGUA EXPERIENCES BEACH BAR TRAIL
Be sure to ask your hotel reception about the Beach Bar Trail. This map highlights the best beach bars Antigua has to offer, as well as some hidden gems you might otherwise miss. The map features the island’s best hotels, too, so you can easily pick out your starting point. Winding your way around the island, you can sip fresh coconut water and feast on ‘fungi and conch’, watch the sun set with a glass of English Harbour rum in hand, party the night away with a mango daiquiri – this ingenious trail doesn’t miss anything out!
SAILING
Antigua is the perfect destination for all things sailing. The renowned Antigua Sailing Week happens every year around April – May time and attracts people from around the world. During the event, the island comes alive with parties and celebrations so whether you’re a sailing enthusiast or just a passing observer, it’s a fantastic time to visit and soak up the festive atmosphere. Aside from this, there are over 20 sailing events lined up for 2018 as well as sailing lessons for those that want to get more involved.
SHIRLEY HEIGHTS
Shirley Heights is definitely a mustdo while in Antigua. Drive or walk to the top of this restored military lookout for picture-perfect views of English and Falmouth Harbours from a 490-foot vantage point. The views are particularly striking at sunset when the skies are glowing and the bay begins to sparkle. Every Sunday for the past three decades, Shirley Heights has been host to evening barbecue parties where visitors and locals come together to eat and listen to local bands.

Barbados is a tiny island paradise where platinum beaches are lapped by azure waters and coconut palms provide shade from the always-shining sun. The island reverberates to the sounds of steel pan bands and calypso beats, and the warm smiles and welcoming nature of Bajans makes visitors feel instantly at home. The star-studded West Coast is where many of the finest hotels in the Caribbean can be found. Gems including the grandiose Fairmont Royal Pavilion and the iconic Sandy Lane cater to the discerning traveller who will find a level of luxury here that is unparalleled. It’s also a fantastic destination for a familyfriendly holiday as children will invariably find this diverse island a natural playground, alongside the array of sports and activities on offer in resorts. Aside from exploring some of the island’s 70 miles of jaw-droppingly gorgeous beaches, you can explore the World Heritage Site of Bridgetown, call at crumbling sugar mills and timeworn plantation homes, visit a rum distillery, and play golf on world-class courses.
14
The echo of the island’s time as a British colonial outpost can still be heard – you’ll find that afternoon tea is a daily tradition, cricket is a much-loved sport and Anglican churches stand tall in local villages where you may also find the odd red post box. There’s plenty of wildlife here, too. Leather and Hawksbill turtles are an enthralling sight to behold, whilst you may be surprised to happen upon green monkeys prancing around your hotel grounds. The beaches here aren’t the only natural wonders, either. The island is home to otherworldly caves, a radiant flower forest and beaches sheltered by unique rock formations. Bajans know how to have fun, as seen in their world-famous festivals, the most popular of which has to be the six-week Crop Over Festival that takes place every July. This 200-year-old extravaganza traditionally celebrated the end of the sugar cane harvest and it still continues today with street fairs, parties, arts and crafts stalls and a carnival complete with colourful and elaborate costumes.

he small island of Nevis covers just 36 square miles, yet manages to encapsulate what a perfect Caribbean holiday should be all about – relaxing on white-sand beaches, diving to colourful coral reefs, long hikes into the rainforest and sinking into that deliciously laidback pace of life. Lusciously green, this tranquil island is towered over by the 3,232-foot Nevis Peak and fringed by tempting beaches with less of the crowds of other Caribbean destinations. Much of the island is still relatively untouched and opportunities for mountain-biking, horse riding and hiking through the sun-dappled rainforest are plentiful. Keep an eye out for wildlife – you’ll probably spot a troop of monkeys barrelling through the trees or the delicate flicker of a hummingbird as it dashes between fluorescent flowers.
Much of the island is still relatively untouched It was in Nevis that the Caribbean’s very first hotel opened in 1778. And that’s not all this enthralling island can claim: its tiny capital, Charlestown, is host to some of the very best remaining examples of colonial-era architecture in the Caribbean. Exploring the island, you’ll also find crumbling old sugar mills and grand old plantation homes – some of which have been converted into hotels, and some of which have been slowly weathered and consumed by the rainforest. There’s an old-fashioned charm about this intriguing island and as you’re feasting on barbecue shrimp, gaping at the sight of a sea turtle gliding beneath crystal-clear waves, or delighting in the heady scent of mango drifting in on the warm tropical breeze as you sip rum punch on your terrace, you’ll be glad you chose this special island for your Caribbean hideaway.

THE COLOURS OF NEVIS
Caribtours’ Managing Director Paul Cleary has just returned from a family holiday in Nevis and we caught up with him to find out more about this relatively-unknown Caribbean Island… Furnished with original antiques and surrounded by beautifully-manicured gardens, this hotel simply radiates oldworld charm and grandeur. Originally built as a sugar plantation in 1778, it remains the Caribbean’s only original plantation house to be located on a beach. The hotel’s long-serving staff keep guests coming back time and time again and its owner, Mr David Dodwell, has been at the helm for a remarkable 27 years. 7 nights from £1,425 per person sharing a Superior room including breakfast. OFFER: Complimentary return airport transfers from St Kitts for stays of 5 days or more
As is expected of a Four Seasons, this upscale resort, which blends in exceptionally well with its natural tropical surroundings, enjoys the highest reputation and certainly delivers. We were particularly impressed by the fact that you can don a wetsuit and catch your own lobster for dinner (they call it Dine and Dive), and that you can enjoy a spa treatment with ingredients from the resort’s very own herb garden. 7 nights from £2,115 per person sharing a Nevis Peak View room on Room Only. OFFER: Stay 5 Pay 4 STAY: 05 Jan - 16 Feb, 25 Feb - 16 Mar, 01 Apr - 18 Dec
Paul’s sons Quinn + Jos
We travel so much throughout the year and this summer I was very keen for a complete getaway where we could just hang out as a family. Some of the Caribtours team had visited the island recently and it was Karen, I think, who suggested that Nevis would be perfect for us. British Airways flies twice a week to sister island St Kitts and the transfer to Nevis by luxury motor launch takes just 20 minutes. We chose to stay in a private home on the Four Seasons Estate. We are a family of five so chose to stay in a gorgeous three-bedroom coral stone villa with a private pool and views over the golf course, as well as Nevis Peak in the background. Every villa comes equipped with its own golf cart - it was absolutely perfect for us and offered a level of luxury that we very quickly became accustomed to. Ahead of our arrival we submitted a grocery list and this meant that as soon as we arrived the fridge was fully stocked, so we could get on with exploring Nevis. I’m a keen runner so would start every day with a five-mile run down as far as Paradise Beach which was an absolutely wonderful way to see the sun rise. One of the unexpected joys of Nevis is just how much there is to do and how easy it is to get around. This
was my first visit in 20 years and there has been a renaissance in the dining and restaurant scene. We were spoilt for choice – we fast became regulars at Sunshine’s Beach Bar & Grill, a worldfamous beach shack serving excellent local food and drinks. It is the home of their infamous Killer Bee cocktail. There are other excellent restaurants too, including the super-stylish Gin Trap (as the name suggests, they serve every blend of gin you could ever imagine…). We also visited our friend Tim Thuell who runs the superb Nisbet Plantation and ate in their first-class beach restaurant. There is a pretty good equestrian school and we took the children horse riding on the beach to watch the sunset, which was one of the highlights of the week. One of the unexpected joys of Nevis was the wildlife – green monkeys are EVERYWHERE and every morning we would take the children out on the golf buggy and tour the Four Seasons estate looking for monkeys to feed. Undoubtedly! We loved every minute of it and especially the people we met. Everyone was so kind and friendly and made us feel welcome. Unexpectedly, I have even joined a long-distance book club with Sharon, our hardworking housekeeper at Four Seasons – we discovered that we both share a passion for historical fiction! I now send her Philippa Gregory books in the post and, in return, Ken Follett novels are arriving in West Sussex all the way from Nevis. So I will have to go back soon if for nothing other than to return the books to Sharon!! - Drink a Killer Bee at Sunshine’s Bar and Grill – never have more than two and please, leave the golf buggy at home… - Go horseback riding at sunset on the beautiful Paradise Beach - Take the Funky Monkey Island Tour, a high adrenaline ride in ATV’s that take you off road and to see the real Nevis - Have a Sundowner at the Gin Trap while watching the sunset - Play golf on Four Seasons’ championship course

THE WILD AND THE WINELANDS TAKE IN THE ROLLING LANDSCAPE OF THE WINELANDS BEFORE JOURNEYING INTO THE WILD ON AN INCREDIBLE SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE.
I
n a country as diverse as South Africa it can be difficult to even know where to start. One of our favourite recommendations is a safari followed by a tour of the winelands; two completely different experiences but such a perfect holiday overall. In our opinion, these two are absolute must-dos when in South Africa. After flying out to South Africa, your adventure will begin at Ulusaba, a stunning boutique lodge that blends seamlessly into a canopy of ancient trees deep in the wilderness of the wildlife-rich Sabi Sands Reserve. Ulusaba is one of Sir Richard Branson’s properties and no expense has been spared in turning this into one of the most exclusive and luxurious game lodges in the world – it was even ranked best safari lodge in Africa by Condé Nast Traveler readers. This is a truly luxurious and unique experience in the heart of the African bush. Game drives start early in the morning and again at dusk; the perfect times of day to spot impala gracefully leaping through the bush, giraffe gently grazing amongst the trees or elephants fixing you with their intelligent gaze. Delicious and robust meals will be served throughout the day and sometimes dinner is accompanied by authentic tribal dancers and singers. When evening falls, relax with a glass of wine from the lodge’s own wine cellar, reflecting on the day’s sightings or listening as a ranger talks you through the night sky’s constellations. After the thrill and adventure of the African bush, it will be time to
slow the pace down and head over to the visually-dramatic winelands. Your destination, Franschhoek, is at the centre of South Africa’s illustrious wine production and oenophiles won’t be disappointed with the range of fine vintages available to sample throughout this region. Foodies, too, will be thrilled with the amount of world-class restaurants Franschhoek can boast as one of the world’s lesser-known gastronomic capitals. Your base here will be the charming Mont Rochelle, a 17th-century thatched-roof manor house that sits amongst 100 acres of winelands. Enjoy daily wine tasting and cellar tours or hop on the local wine tram which takes you through the winelands, stopping off at various wine estates and passing through some absolutely incredible mountain and vineyard-clad scenery along the way. You can cool off with a refreshing dip in the swimming pool back at Mont Rochelle or relax with a spa treatment before rounding the day off with gourmet fare at the hotel’s exquisite restaurant, Miko, and making a toast to an absolutely spectacular holiday. 7 nights from £3,999 per person, including 3 nights at Ulusaba in an Elephant Room on All-Inclusive followed by 4 nights at Mont Rochelle in a Shiraz Room on Half Board, return scheduled and domestic flights and private transfers. OFFER: Complimentary 30 minute massage per person at Ulusaba + Complimentary upgrade to Half Board and wine tasting at Mont Rochelle STAY: 01 May – 31 Aug

SUGAR BEACH, A VICEROY RESORT SAINT LUCIA
Edward Light, Head of Commercial at Caribtours, gives us the lowdown on his recent family holiday to Sugar Beach, Saint Lucia. “My family and I had a magical stay at Sugar Beach this summer – it was our first time staying there and we were so impressed by so many things. The resort’s wow factor is of course its amazing setting, tucked into a cove between the two famous Piton Mountains which rise up imposingly on either side. It’s amazingly set on over 100 acres of rainforest – there are no other resorts next door so, apart from a few visiting snorkelling boats, the entire bay is pretty much exclusively for resort guests. Snorkelling is also a big attraction – the protected marine park on the right hand side of the bay ensures an incredible selection of coral and tropical fish to swim amongst. Our kids could easily have spent all day there floating about in lovely warm waters marvelling at the sea life. We
also tried stand up paddleboarding and kayaking, and would have taken out a Hobie Cat had there been any wind! All this ensured a healthy appetite, and there was a lovely mix of fresh smoothies and eggs cooked to order at breakfast, casual snacks and tapas on the beach at lunchtime and superb à la carte evening dinners – either right on the beach with tiki lights and candles, or up in the magnificent Great Room with views over the estate. Whilst our children aren’t usually avid Kids Club goers, the team at the Sugar Club and the activities laid on were such fun that they were often gone for hours on end – football games and evening cinemas on the lawn, shell painting, coconut bowls, water balloon games… they absolutely loved it. Plus Alice (9) was treated by mum to a special children’s chocolate massage in the jungle spa which she still talks about now, along with the tuk tuk rides to get around the resort!

Sugar Beach is equally suitable for couples/honeymooners or families – there are enough quiet corners to escape to whilst we never felt self-conscious with the kids in tow. It is simply one of those premier resorts where everything is just slick, pristine, and of the highest quality.” 7 nights from £1,899 per person sharing a Luxury Sugar Mill Room including breakfast. ANSE CHASTANET SAINT LUCIA
Ben Murtagh from Thames Travel recently returned from a family holiday at Saint Lucia’s beautiful Anse Chastanet. “Arranging a trip for family is not easy! Trying to find a hotel that offered the pampering my mother craved, the adventure my brother longed for and that ‘je ne sais quoi’ that I look for in my own holiday is virtually impossible. But when one of my regular clients and I were catching up and she mentioned her favourite place, the breathtaking resort of Anse Chastanet in St Lucia, I just knew that’s where we had to go! Occupying a prime beachfront location (two beaches to choose from!) with over 600 acres of lush

rainforest surrounding it, Anse Chastanet gave us everything we wanted and more. For my adventure-loving little brother who spent his time paddle boarding, snorkelling (the house reef is reached from the main beach and is simply sublime) and biking along the various jungle trails with me often lagging, the whole resort felt like home especially with the warm and friendly staff who enquired how his day was going and
For my mother, our Premium Hillside Room was the most memorable - it was missing its fourth wall for uninterrupted views (as is traditional in Saint Lucia) and the shower was designed to fit around a huge tree! Its prime location at the top of the resort gave us panoramic views of the rainforest and calm seas whilst the sounds of birds, frogs and all manner of creatures offered us a sweet symphony to drift off to after a hard day of very little!
drink; Anse Chastanet seemed to sense this and bombarded me with the freshest pastries in the morning, thirst-quenching cocktails at lunch and sumptuous fine dining experiences for dinner. People often worry about the quality of ‘All Inclusive’ but without a doubt, the varied menus and options available at the hotel would make the most avid foodies salivate with excitement.” 7 nights from £1,619 per person sharing a Standard Garden View Room including breakfast. Peter Eastaugh Traveller’s World “It had been several years since our last visit to Barbados and my wife Julie and I were so pleased that we returned to find the island pretty unchanged. The west coast is so well established that the hotels have secured prime locations overlooking the wonderful blue sea. Perfect for us as the purpose of this visit was to simply relax and enjoy the beautiful warm 32
The second reason for our holiday was that it was Julie’s birthday and so as a special treat we stayed at the world-renowned Sandy Lane hotel for a few nights. Nothing quite prepared us for the welcome we received as we glided to a stop outside the impressive entrance. Seven members of management and staff were waiting with a welcoming smile, hands outstretched, and two glasses of chilled Champagne - we truly felt like royalty. The reference to Julie’s birthday continued throughout our stay with gifts of cake, chocolates and more chilled bubbly. The beach, restaurants
and rooms are absolutely amazing and the understated professionalism of the staff is one of their biggest assets. The hotel is obviously expensive but do I think it’s worth it? Yes it is and I would return in a flash! Thank you Caribtours for

BODYHOLIDAY SAINT LUCIA
It’s my 15th time visiting BodyHoliday and I still love it! This time I’m here with my mum and she had me up at 6am this morning to go for a bike ride to Pigeon Island! It was hard but I felt so exhilarated once I’d completed it and after lunch I spent the afternoon lounging on the beach, snacking on fresh fruit kebabs and sipping an iced rum cocktail, while mum had a facial at the spa. We’re going to relax in the Piano Bar for a while tonight before dinner at my favourite restaurant, TAO – I always make sure I book early for this restaurant as it fills up so quickly! The food served throughout the whole resort is exceptional, though, and there’s so much variety you can eat something different every night of the week with the ever-changing menus. As an all-inclusive hotel, what you get for your money here is amazing.
A lot of people think BodyHoliday is all about fitness and detoxing. It’s true that if that’s what you’re looking for you’ll get it at BodyHoliday but you can also just chill out, enjoy the fine dining, spend time in the spa and lounge on the beach. Most people that come to BodyHoliday are repeat guests because it’s just such a warm environment. It’s like a friends reunion in the Clubhouse and the ‘Bodyguards’, as the staff here are known, know everyone within a day of arriving. Mum’s loved it so much she’s decided she’s going to come back on her own next time!
