Special thanks to Underdog Bikes for providing the beach cruiser used in the cover photo, which was shot on Memorial Avenue in Roanoke, just off the Roanoke River Greenway.
neighbors, Our focus over the past several years to transform care continues to pay off in meaningful ways, as you’ll read on the following pages. The past year was as much about inspiration, though, as it was about transformation. I hope you’ll be as inspired as I am by the courage and remarkable achievements of our fellow community members. They’re living proof that amazing things can happen when people who are motivated to get better partner with those dedicated to helping them get there. That’s what Carilion Clinic is all about. Since our founding in 1899, our singular goal has been improving the health of the communities we serve. Although it may look different today—with digital tools that connect you with your physician and with complex procedures and surgeries—we deliver the care you need, when you need it. Like you, we’re part of the community, providing a network of support that goes well beyond our walls. Whether it’s helping to train the doctors of the future or bringing better nutrition to underserved communities, we’re here for you. We are your friends, your neighbors, your loved ones, working every day to deliver on a promise made more than a century ago. Right where we live.
Sincerely,
Nancy Howell Agee President and CEO Carilion Clinic

RETIREE LES PERDUE DIDN’T HAVE A REASON TO WORRY ABOUT HIS HEALTH, UNTIL THE DAY HE EXPERIENCED A STROKE. His prognosis was grim: he might never walk again. But Les and wife Pat had other plans: they said, “We’ve been given lemons; we’re gonna make lemonade.” He’s made amazing progress, too, thanks to a Carilion-supervised fitness program at the Roanoke Athletic Club and his trainer Leonard. “Without him, Les would be sitting in a chair,” said Pat. “Seeing him walk on the beach with our grandson, it’s so rewarding.” Together, Les and Pat are staying sharp mentally and physically. As Les put it, “Exercise—that’s our number one priority.” That, and savoring every minute of retirement.
Getting stronger every day After major renovations, the Roanoke Athletic Club has additional amenities, a new name, and a new tagline: Finding your strength. Now known as Carilion Wellness, the refurbished facility features new locker rooms, whirlpools, and training areas—and offers strength exercises to improve balance, coordination, and endurance.
Providing access to fitness
We’ve been given lemons; we’re gonna make lemonade.
Employees at Carilion Giles Community Hospital are taking advantage of another healthy workplace benefit. With their new on-site workout facilities (an amenity their peers at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital and Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital have enjoyed for a while), strength and cardio training can easily be a part of daily routines, and Giles employees are leaving work even healthier than when they arrived.

IF THERE’S ONE THING DISTANCE SWIMMER CONNOR MCCAULEY DOESN’T KNOW, IT’S HOW TO QUIT. A high-speed collision with two SUVs couldn’t stop him. Nor could the resulting torn aorta. Attending cardiothoracic surgeon Scott Arnold was stunned: “I thought, ‘There’s no way he should be alive.’” But as Dr. Arnold’s team rushed him into surgery, Connor lent encouragement, telling them, “I just want to thank you all for taking care of me.” The ninehour open-heart procedure was a success, and it has fueled Connor’s dream of studying biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech in the fall. For now, however, Connor is back where he was before that fateful day: in the pool, training.
Keeping tabs on cardiac health
Guarding hearts for a generation
Living with heart failure became a little easier for patients this year, when we became the first health system in Virginia to implant the CardioMEMS device. This wireless, miniaturized monitor allows our heart team to closely track subtle changes in a patient’s condition, significantly reducing hospital visits, and helping patients spend more time at home and with their loved ones.
Advancing excellence in heart care is a mission that benefits us all, and it’s why we joined other area hospitals in 1989 to form HeartNet of the Virginias. The network has enhanced referral, treatment, and follow-up care for cardiac patients across our region. In 2014, we celebrated a quarter century of collaboration and countless lives saved.
Educating patients at every moment Providing our patients with the

highest quality of care and more information is important. That’s why we recently brought GetWellNetwork to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. GetWellNetwork gives patients access to MyChart and personalized treatment information, as well as educational and entertainment offerings, all on their in-room TV.
6 | Healthy Lifestyle
I WILL GET MY DIABETES
Healthy Lifestyle | 7
IT’S BRENDA SPENCE’S JOB TO HELP KEEP PEOPLE HEALTHY. IT TURNED OUT SHE NEEDED A LITTLE HELP TOO. “My doctor told me to come in,” she said. “My A1C was 10.3 percent. That’s really high. My heart sank.” But Brenda’s doctor recommended the Healthy Lifestyle program, and after six months of eating better and light exercise, she’s seen results: “My A1C is down to 5.6 percent, I’ve lost 23 pounds, and cut my diabetes meds by half.” Brenda’s care coordinator, Jessica, isn’t surprised: “She was my very first Healthy Lifestyle patient, and I could tell she would succeed.” And that’s exactly what she’s doing.
Engaging patients In 2014, our new website got far more than a facelift. With the addition of live-chat capabilities, you can now communicate in real time with clinical experts.
Charting progress
I’ve lost 23 pounds and cut my diabetes meds by half.
By home computer and smartphone, more than 67,000 Carilion patients are tapping into the power of the MyChart system to manage a wide range of health care needs. Whether they’re tracking prescription refills, confirming appointments, accessing health records, or corresponding with caregivers, MyChart is becoming a powerful tool for putting patients in control of their health.
8 | Pediatric Care
Earning the highest ratings Our youngest and most fragile patients deserve the very best care. And according to confidential surveys conducted by Professional Research Consultants (PRC), that’s precisely what we deliver. This year, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital received PRC’s fivestar rating for overall quality of care— which gives babies and their parents good reason to rest easy.
Giving teens room to recover Inspired by Red Band Society (a new comedy-drama series about a group of teenagers living in a pediatric unit), the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals made a major donation in 2014 to help renovate the Teen Room at Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital. Now, teens can feel a little more at home during hospital stays, and we can better serve the children and families in our community.
Meeting a growing need Carilion is committed to providing the highest quality care for our community’s youngsters, from their first moments and into adulthood. That’s why we’re continually growing and expanding our pediatric care team. With new providers in pediatric neurology and in pediatric hematology and oncology, kids facing the most challenging conditions have a greater possibility of a brighter future.
Pediatric Care | 9
HELPING FAMILIES STAY HEALTHY Parents and children in Botetourt County have another reason to feel better with the opening of our new pediatric medicine office in Daleville, just five miles from its previous location. Part of the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital, the facility is designed to meet the specific needs of young families, with fun décor, separate sick- and well-child waiting areas, and comprehensive lactation support. It’s everything families need to grow bigger and stronger every day.
10 | Carilion in the Community
INSPIRING CARE’S NEXT SUPERSTARS In 2014, we were proud to be part of the first Virginia Science Festival. Hosted by the Science Museum of Western Virginia and Virginia Tech, the statewide celebration of science and technology featured hundreds of handson experiences—including an opportunity to perform simulated surgery in a real OR suite, and to see what it’s like to care for a patient during a medical emergency.
Carilion in the Community | 11
Leading on the national stage Our president and CEO, Nancy Howell Agee, was appointed this year to the American Hospital Association’s board of trustees and the governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates. More than anything, Nancy’s statewide and national recognition is a direct result of everything she’s accomplished right here in our community.
Welcoming new neighbors The newest cool place to live in Roanoke happens to be right in the neighborhood of Carilion’s Riverside Campus. Called The Bridges, this 22-acre mixed-use development is expected to provide medical students, residents, and staff with a convenient place to call home, along with restaurants for everyone, including our patients. Amenities include a kayak launch, greenway access, and a promenade along the Roanoke River, making one of the development’s most attractive features the great outdoors.
12 | Carilion in the Community
Expanding access to vital care Patients in our area now have improved access to ambulatory surgical care. Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital recently opened the doors to two new operating rooms and renovated pre-op, post-op, and family areas. The result: better care for the whole community.
Delivering on high expectations On the annual survey of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), Carilion Clinic garnered high ratings across nearly every measure. In particular, we exceeded state averages when it came to our patients recommending us to others and recovery at home—proof that our promise to patient health goes well beyond our walls.
Assembling a new team In a move with far-reaching impact, we’ve established a new department dedicated exclusively to orthopaedics. Previously part of the Department of Surgery, the new department is chaired by Joe Moskal, M.D. With more than 35 physicians, it’s the largest orthopaedics team in the commonwealth, and also a department of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
Carilion in the Community | 13
FACING A GLOBAL HEALTH CRISIS TO KEEP US ALL SAFER At the height of the Ebola outbreak, our own Tom Kerkering, M.D., was called to Sierra Leone by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help caregivers develop treatment practices and educate residents about the disease and its prevention. Once Dr. Kerkering returned home safely, he immediately set about sharing his firsthand knowledge. With extensive preparedness training, the same methods used to contain the crisis in Western Africa can help keep us all safer and healthier, right here in western Virginia.
14 | Education and Research
PRODUCING FIRSTCLASS CAREGIVERS May 2014 marked a historic event in the Roanoke Valley: the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s charter class received their diplomas after four years of clinical education and firsthand research. And with 11 of the 40 graduates pursuing their residency training at Carilion, these first alumni will make a lasting contribution to both their alma mater and our neighbors.
Education and Research | 15
Pioneering discoveries in skin science Our commitment to basic biomedical research continues to yield extraordinary results. Proof: Teaming up with the National Institutes of Health, the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute has discovered a wound-healing compound that promises relief for some elderly patients. Through randomized clinical trials, researchers isolated a peptide shown to heal venous leg ulcers twice as fast as existing treatments. Result: Faster recoveries, and less time away from home.
Earning well-deserved accreditation In June, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine was granted initial accreditation from the Southern Association of College and Schools, as well as full accreditation from the Liaison Committee for Medical Education. The achievements validated a lot of hard work and dedication on the part of faculty, staff, and students, promising a brighter future for health care.
16 | Education and Research
BUILDING A BETTER WAY TO LEARN In October, the swing of a ceremonial sledgehammer heralded the start of an important collaboration between Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Radford University, and Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Together these three institutions will construct southwest Virginia’s most advanced educational laboratory. Housed at Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, the $2.5 million Virginia Intercollegiate Anatomy Lab will redefine how students learn anatomy and approach their medical education.

Retelling an amazing story
Expanding horizons for caregivers
Jefferson College of Health Sciences relaunched its brand in 2014, with updated visual elements and a new messaging strategy that embraces the purposeful nature of its students and the college’s leading-edge curriculum. Driven by the compelling idea “Be Next,” the new brand is helping Jefferson gain even greater recognition as a top educator in the health sciences. And our community will be seen as an even more desirable destination for the next generation of health care professionals.
This year we extended two new opportunities in graduate medical education with the addition of residencies in cosmetic surgery and dermatology. Beyond offering students an opportunity to deepen their clinical knowledge, these programs build on Carilion’s commitment to education, and open a new chapter in our century-old tradition of advancing learning, knowledge, and understanding.

CELEBRATING THE HEALING POWER OF ART Anyone curious about the beneficial effects of creative expression need only visit Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where musical performances, creative writing opportunities, and temporary and permanent art exhibits are designed to calm the mind, soothe the spirit, and ultimately heal the body. Below are some highlights of the Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Arts Program, made possible by contributions through the Carilion Clinic Foundation.
Showing our true colors
Casting off burdens
Contemplating better health
Last summer, the hard work of our employees and their families graced the walls of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital as part of our inaugural Employee Art Show. The popular exhibit was made possible in partnership with the National Arts Program.
Artist Kurt Steger’s interactive Burden Boat installation invites visitors to jot down their burdens on slips of paper and place them in the hull for release during scheduled ceremonies. The work was created in the aftermath of the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings and, before joining our permanent collection, was on display at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
Visitors to our labyrinth at Riverside Center can follow a path to peace. A gift of the Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Healing Arts Program, funded through the Carilion Clinic Foundation by Epic Systems, this permanent installation provides a new space for meditation, reflection, and above all else, healing.

Saying farewell to Papa Keeley With the passing of Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley, the Carilion family lost a remarkable physician, a dear friend, and an enduring mentor. Known to all as “Papa Keeley,” he was a respected surgeon, administrator, and educator, as well as a passionate supporter of the Roanoke community. He cofounded Jefferson Surgical Clinic in 1956, and served as Carilion’s chief of surgery and chief of staff for many years. He was also a professor of surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he trained many surgeons who continue to practice in the Roanoke area. His memory will live on through the Carilion Clinic Foundation-sponsored Healing Arts Program named in his honor and memory, along with the countless lives he’s touched.
The Carilion family lost a remarkable physician, a dear friend, and an enduring mentor.
Honoring decades of dedication Dan Harrington, M.D., our vice president of academic affairs, was presented with the 2014 Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Award for his unyielding dedication to the health and well-being of the Roanoke region. In his 25 years at Carilion, he has established our first psychiatric residency, directed the Behavioral Health program, and helped create a mental health collaborative to treat underserved populations around the world.
20 | Community Benefit
MEETING THE HEALTH NEEDS OF OUR REGION Since the completion of our landmark Community Health Needs Assessments, healthy changes can be felt every day, right where we live. Guided by key findings about the health challenges facing western Virginia, vital programs are being spearheaded by member organizations of the Healthy Roanoke Valley consortium. Below are a few of the positive initiatives springing up to make a difference all over the region.
Putting health within reach
Acting now on child obesity
Our partnership with Feeding America Southwest Virginia helps the communities we serve improve their nutrition. FASV offers free health tips and screenings as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, and gives underserved communities the opportunity to meet with a nutritionist— putting a happier, healthier life in reach for thousands of families.
Armed with a $60,700 grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, Carilion has founded Positive Action Toward Health (PATH), a coalition of 35 local organizations dedicated to mitigating child obesity. Whether it’s through support for school gardens or the successful Happy Healthy Cooks program, we’re helping kids learn healthier habits to last a lifetime.
Inviting neighbors to come out and play Building on the success of the $7 million renovation and reopening of Roanoke’s Elmwood Park, the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital Playground will open there in the summer of 2015, giving local families another great reason to go out and get active.

Contributing to a stronger community Because we’re a non-profit organization, the bottom line that matters most to Carilion is a healthy, happy community. Our shareholders are each and every one of our friends, neighbors, and family members. Because well-being is the greatest dividend of all, and when it comes to contributing more to a stronger region, this was another banner year.
