LEODIS LONDON Welcome to Leodis London Polo Club, a club for Alumni players of Leeds University Union Polo Club (LUUPC), who are based in and around London. The club was formed Spring 2020, and was founded by Nick Lithgow. Leodis London was established in order to build a network for graduate LUUPC players who wish to continue playing the sport of polo whilst maintaining strong links with the recognised and successful LUUPC. The first part of club name ‘Leodis’ is based on the victorian pronunciation of Leeds which was first recorded in Anglo-Saxon times. The full name Leodis London was used to illustrate our relationship between the two cities, and the link between past and present players of LUUPC.
LEODIS LONDON Our Club Motto ‘Auribus Teneo Lupum’ translates to ‘Holding a wolf by the ears’. Taken from Phormio (c.161BC), a work by the Roman playwright Terence - Auribus Teneo Lupum served as an ancient roman proverb to describe an unsustainable situation, in which both doing nothing and doing something to resolve it are equally risky. This serves as a fitting metaphor for playing the sport of polo and the risks involved with both holding onto the reigns and letting go .
LEODIS LONDON Our new club kit has been designed to incorporate both aspects of classic as well as contemporary polo wear over the last century in order to make equally dynamic and appealing kit. The simplistic jersey design inspired by polo shirts worn by Prince Charles as a young polo player in combination with the abstract jumper pattern creates attractive and eye catching pairing both on and off the polo field.
LEODIS LONDON Designed with function in mind by Nick Lithgow, the shawl collar and sport stretch fabric will enchance performance by allowing players to keep cool during play whilst having that classic polo look. In a nod to our heritage, Leodis London Polo Club colours reflect the Navy strip used by LUUPC along with hints of crimson to mirror our vivid and striking club crest which incorporates aspects of both the Official City of London and University of Leeds Coats of Arms
