BORDERING EUROPE www.carlasaad.com/bordering-europe Team: Carla Saad | Master in Design Engineering Sidra Fatima | Master in Urban Planning
Borders were defined historically by natural geographical features such as mountains, valleys, deserts, rivers, and seas...
A Story About : The Continent
In Europe, Schengen zones redefined the borders’ concept by implementing an open border strategy to accelerate economic development, thus changing the perception of “territory
A Story About : The Continent
Since Germany is one of the main pillars of the European Union’s economy, we took a closer look on the mobility patterns with its neighboring coutries while comparing between arrivals to Germany and departures to the other studied country.
A Story About : The Continent
France is the second largest economy in Europe after Germany. The data visualized here dates back to 2013. At that time, France was experiencing higher unemployement rates which explains the volume of arrivals from France to Germany
A Story About : The Continent
IN 2013, The United Kingdom experienced 1.9% econominc growth which is its strongest rate since 2007. The Brexit referendum took place in June 2016
A Story About : The Continent
The transportation network is at the basis of economic development and prosperity of countries as it affects directly the trading activity,
A Story About : The Continent
Airports in Europe play a considerable role in human power mobility and cargo flow. The busiest airports in Europe are Heathrow airport, Amsterdam airport Schiphol, Charles de Gaules airport, and Frankfurt airport
A Story About : The Continent
Airpass program in Europe was established to incentivize people to move between countries at cheaper flight rates. The bar chart and buffer on Frankfurt airport show the variation of airpasses’ density within the radius of the airport.

Node is a smart, comprehensive emergency response system built on resillient wireless routers and leveraging community engagement to reimagine the future of urban disaster preparedness. CURRENT 911 COMMUNICATION SYSTEM UNDER STRESS
A distress call app transmits relevant data about a caller’s location, medical history, and urgency. An AI agent triages for first responders or nearby volunteers depending on system load. In cases of extreme infrastructure damage, users can also connect to the LoRaWAN-based wireless mesh network nodes for backup connectivity.

A Story About : The Buildings BYBLOS TOWN COMPETITION, BYBLOS, LEBANON [As published on Hashim Sarkis Studios’ website] http://www.hashimsarkis.com/projects/5
SITE PLAN DRAWING PRODUCTION | BOULOS DOUEIHY DESIGN | PROJECT TEAM
“Hashim Sarkis was awarded the commission of the new Byblos Town Hall after an anonymous open competition. Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a World Heritage Site, has been growing outside the historic city bounds to the point where most of the city’s population now lives in the city’s suburbs. Boasting a historic harbor, two crusader castles, several historic churches and mosques in addition to an extensive Phoenician, Hellenistic and Roman heritage, the city is the most visited tourist site in Lebanon. In an effort to recenter the city, the new town hall site was chosen at the interchange of the north south highway that separates the city from its eastern suburbs, in a public park and near a tourist information area. The building is broken down into three large blocks that span over the park, each housing a different component of the program, the gaps between them bringing light into the park and the buildings. The park as well as the ground floor of the complex are maintained open to the public. The three blocks are carried by the circulation cores to the east and a long wall to the west that acts as a noise barrier with the highway. To protect from noise and heat, the blocks are closed to the outside and clad with sandstone, the “official stone” of the city. The offices are open to the spaces between the blocks with the facades clad in aluminum louvers that turn horizontally to become pergolas over the park that weave between the blocks. ” [...] “Each of the three volumes contains a component of the program, namely offices for three entities sharing the building: the municipal departments, the municipal council offices, and an interactive museum for the alphabet that also provides a multipurpose hall for the town. The volumes are at once separated from each other and connected at the ground level. The glass enclosed ground floor level combines the common spaces of the program: entrances, information, city cashier, cafeteria and exhibition space.”[...]

Designing an embassy is perceived as condensing a whole nation into one architectural statement. The building is a physical representation of the link between two countries: Austria and Lebanon in addition to its symbolic status as being an element of identification with the home country for the Lebanese living in Vienna. After the investigation of the Austrian cultural through collages, natural elements, mainly water and mountains, were my main focus as a linking concept. While Austria is a landlocked country with a main river and mountains (the Danube and the Alps) passing through it, Lebanon has its southern frontier facing the Mediterranean sea and has two mountain chains parallel to the sea to the east.
NOON
Following the concept of layering and being restricted by the building codes in Vienna in terms of footprint and setback, I divided my lot into three strips using water channel as a safety strategy in order to block the accessibility while keeping the visual continuity through the various building functions consisting of the consulate, the embassy and the ambassador’s house.

Lebanocracia is a digital participation tool which is part of the Opencracia project. It was conceived to help people prioritize their demands from the Government in light of the fall 2019 uprisings that happened around the world and specifically Chile and Lebanon. Lebanocracia collected more than a quarter million preferences and ranked the demands from the most relevant to the least relevant accoding to three different algorithms:TrueSkill, Eigenvector, and % Wins

TERNION

Religion has been used to both unite and divide. Ternion is a physical visualization that allows people to discover the possibility of hidden connections across Monotheistic religions at the semantic level.
Using the machine learning model Word2Vec, we were able to extract coordinates for words in the context of the three holy texts
From there, we were able to identify the closest words to the chosen words, which helped us see where the holy texts converge and where they diverge
To create Ternion, we chose words reflecting on how religions change through time

VORTICES
www.carlasaad.com/vortices Team: Carla Saad | Master in Design Engineering Solomon Green-Eams | Master in Urban Planning
Vortices explores the focal points at which the density of activities and daily rythms unite. The larger the area, the greater the density of activities taking place at that time in that location.

Each panel represents one hour of the day, with areas exhibiting the highest density of activity being hewn in translucent material. Together, the box is an assemblage of frames that convey how the overlapping trajectories of individual’s days form “vortices of activities”.
