Begin for three-part mixed choir and piano
Begin was composed in June of 2020 in the shadow of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the death of George Floyd. The introduction summarizes how it feels to live through these monumental moments in our history. As the song develops, though, these shadows are replaced with a hopeful light. “We are stronger when we have each other,” and this song is intended to lift up the listener with a message of solidarity, unity, and optimism.
Matt Carlson teaches vocal music in the Bermudian Springs School District (York Springs, PA). He is a graduate of Gettysburg College (B.S. Music Education) and Michigan State University (M.M Choral Conducting). Matt is an active composer and arranger, whose music has been commissioned and performed by the Gettysburg College Choir, Gettysburg Children’s Choir, the Adams County (PA) Junior High Honor Choir, the Frederick County (MD) Elementary Honor Choir, the Tucson Girls Chorus, and the PMEA Districts 5 & 7 Elementary Song Fests.
