1. The Periferica project

Every day in Italy are cemented around 100 hectares of land. This action is irreversible bringing the country to uncontrolled loss of agricultural land and the perennial threat of speculation. The challenge of Europe and Italy is clear: we need to rethink the territory pivoting on built through the many forms of urban regeneration and sustainable energy. In this scenario fits Periferica, an initiative that invites you to think about the role of public space in modern society and to act on it to improve it, starting with the economic and social potential of the territory and its margins neediest and mysterious: the suburbs. Last year, just a month after the first edition, Periferica wins the Ri.U.So Award for sustainable urban regeneration, sponsored by the Italian National Council of Architects CNAPPC, on over 400 submitted projects.
2. Festival

Every year the festival Periferica moves in a different neighborhood, there occupies space and build the structures to accommodate events and services for the host community. At the end of the festival, these structures remain in the neighborhood, regenerating, year after year, the entire suburban ring of the city. During the festival are involved associations operating in the area, Italian universities, professionals and businesses, initiatives to involve all the city: Workshops of Architecture and Design, creative labs, events, exhibitions, contests, missions.

The place and the theme of the festival are chosen year after year based on the needs of the city and the potential regional impact that Periferica, in that place, can have. The construction of each edition has an incubation period of ideas, where the team is confronted with the community and local businesses, as well as professionals and the city administration, examining the best hypothesis intervention. Periferica is especially participatory action: during the festival, the district is transformed into a huge creative and construction site, where everyone can contribute; for this purpose the general program comprises different initiatives: workshops, labs, events , missions and exhibitions.

The theme of the second edition #periferici, people and places of the suburbs, aims to collect throughout the week useful testimonies for the construction of a regeneration program for the coming years.

3. The Architecture workshop: levels
!
The Macello district (in eng: Slaughterhouse) is characterized by the presence of ancient quarries of tuff that today, for a city without a park like Mazara, is a real historical and natural heritage, which is likely to be lost as a result of speculation. In this regard, during the previous edition, the workshop focused on the conversion of one of these in a potential cultural yard. However, it was an intervention is in a private area. Drawing on the experience of last year, the workshop will focus on a different quarry, the relevant public, hidden under the Macello square and communicating with the largest green area in the district. The intended use of this area will be at the discretion of the Working Group. 20 students , 8 teachers and tutors, 1 day reception and presentation of the workshop, 1 of exploration and analysis, 4 days of design, 1for the presentation of the work.

4. The Design Workshop: rebuilding identity

Welcome to the most crucial stage of Periferica. The workshop Staging involves design and construction of ephemeral architecture and functional decided in accordance with the requirements of the neighborhood community. At the end of the festival, these structures will be donated to the district with the aim of improving livability. After careful analysis, we have chosen three project areas: 1 ) the court of the elementary school G. Rodari 2 ) the adjacent square 3 ) the second life of quarry, a new cultural yard The design, such as the construction of such facilities will be coordinated by the collective of architects, designers and teachers of the Academy of Fine Arts. The first day after the presentation of the workshop , students will be able to choose which area to treat, according to availability of seats. 40 students , 4 collective of Architects, Artists and Designers, 1 day reception and presentation of the workshop, one of exploration, analysis and design, 4 for building, 1 for the presentation of the work.

5. Program and timetable

1 to 7 September 2014 / Monday - Monday 9:00 to 1:00 p.m. / 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - work 1:00 p.m. to 15:00 - lunch break dinner and evening are free

6. Who can participate
! Can apply all students and graduates of Architecture, Design, Academy. ! 60 seats of which 20 Architecture, 40 Design. 20 of these are reserved for foreign students : 5 for Architecture, 15 Design.

7. Subscribers
!
You have to fill out the online form on the official website of Periferica, click here. As you can see , the selection criteria are flexible and take into account both the training of the candidate than his extra university interests. You can enroll in the period from June 10 to June 30, 12:00. The results will be communicated no later than July 5th. After the selection, the candidate must confirm attendance by email to periferica.ws@gmail.com and pay the fee within two days from the publication of the list, by sending a photographic copy of the receipt of credit.

8. Fees & Services !
Participation in the workshop is free ; to make the experience more accessible, there is a service package of 250 €, which includes: ● Accommodation for 7 nights with breakfast; ● 1 free meal per day; ● 50 % discount to partners, such as sandwich bars , bars and pubs. ● a bicycle ( to be confirmed ) ● free access to all festival events ● Buffet + welcome bag made by Periferica The fee shall be paid within two days from the publication of the list of selected bank account of the Corda association. * Who have already attended the workshop last year, will have the free Preweek.

N.B. The Corda association will use all funds collected to cover the costs of the Festival; These will as donations to buy materials, tools, bear the costs of teachers and other guests, such as any management expenses foreseen and unforeseen. The low cost of participation is due to the sensitivity of partners who have embraced the initiative. Corda is a Nonprofit Association legally constituted.

9. Periferica Extra: Preweek
!
The Festival begins on Monday, September 1st; anticipates the arrival on Friday 29 to visit the city, the old town, and the beaches on the weekends. It will open a network of contacts with residents, if available, will take you around the city.

The cost of preweek is 60€ (20/night) and includes 3 nights accommodation (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in the apartment and 50% in affiliated discount.
