THE QUARANTINE

A collection of stories from around the world during the pandemic of COVID-19.

The idea I had for this zine started when I went to go grab a cup of coffee, and I wondered how quarantine was going for other people? I decided to reach out to my friends and see if they wanted to submit a photo about their experience along with an explanation. I thought it would give them something for them and me to do, so we wouldn't get bored. As I asked the people I was connected to the call for submissions grew. Four days after the genesis of the project, word had reached from Hawaii to Italy. Being the sole collector of these stories, I saw a W I D E range of experiences from those that submitted photos. It was at this point, that the focal point of this project became less about entertaining myself with a small design passion project, but rather how could I create something that told all of these stories? Now I want this publication to tell the story of how for several months, all of humanity was given the same obstacle at once, and to remember all of those that were taken from us. I think that the bookmark to this experience is one we should all remember once we are past the pandemic: WE ARE ALL EQUALďˆ‰n. 2

ALEKSA

AMAR

So far my quarantine has consisted of two things: insomnia & isolation. The large amount of black, empty space represents the great level of isolation that I have felt so far, and the blur symbolizes the way that every day meshes together. Finally, my sister (who is representing me), shows the countless hours that I spend alone and awake in my room just staring at my shadow, engulfed in my thoughts.

TODAY I LOST my job, I decided to go for a walk to let my mind unwind. Took photos along the way to cement this moment in time. I know I'm not the only one counting their losses and winnings. Here's to abrupt endings and to new beginnings. Locked in staring and the door that was always ajar but now seems so far. Progression frozen in time and human connection is now a crime. The door will open again one day but for now my friend please stay.

THIS WAS TAKEN during my spring break in Palma De Mallorca, Spain. My roomate had woken me up at 2am on our third night of Spring Break. She told me, " Just got the notice from the president. Read the news.

JUST GOT T FROM THE ANTHON READ THE HAVE A FE TO GET OU

We have a few hours to get out of here." We packed our bags as quickly as possible and tried to book flights immediatly. The picture was taken within the first hour of waking up and trying to book a flight back home. We were literally freaking out. We never expected it to get this bad, but I'm just glad we're all healthy, taking the situation seriously now, and are all back home.

I NEVER HAD time to process what I wanted to gain from going into quarantine, I had been flooded with the emotions of having to juggle a “new normal” when my old normal didn’t feel...normal. Naturally, with all my transitions I tend to go with the flow. I maintain a happy face and positive attitude so that no one feels like they have to take care of me. I could be drowning in a in the trenches of depression, and you wouldn’t even know. This always follows with a numbness within me. I act in almost a robotic way. With such rigidness I feel my body tight and many

15

mental blocks. The truth is if I let myself feel whatever I need to feel my shadows tend to get the best of me. The darkness in my thoughts and emotions are overwhelming so being stuck in a frozen sea when you can’t feel anything doesn’t seem phase me. But, like the moon, my shadows and cycles are part of me and they are part of my journey for the world to see and appreciate, from a distance of course. And if I disappear for a while just know I’m still here.

quarantine: Turning 21 during a nationwide disaster may have not been the greatest gift. I however, have taken this time to see which alcoholic beverages I may like and this week is “red wine” tasting. Giving yourself something new to try and spending this time by learning about yourself is the best way to spend this time you have outside of the world we are routinely accustomed to. Try something new. Read lots of books and of course EXPLORE YOUR TASTE BUDS :)

â–˛ IT'S BEEN A while since the sky has changed like this but in a break from the tolls of quarantine I looked outside and this plane caught my eye. It's kind of ironic. The vast sky in its calm, and this plane seemingly small and singular but a reminder of the calamity. I wonder who's on it and why and hope it's for good reason...

I sent this photo to our family groupchat and now when I look at it I’m reminded of how grateful I am to be quarantined with people I can laugh with.

▲ I’VE SPENT A lot of my quarantine time painting because it really lifts my mood up and makes me happy. I made these for a boy I like and who I won’t see for another few months because of quarantine and because he went back home to Switzerland to wait this whole COVID-19 situation out. I keep them on my desk and they remind me that things will be different in a few months, and sometimes I’m tempted to mail them to Switzerland.

▼ I’VE BEEN DOING a lot of baking during quarantine, trying new gluten free recipes. Cinnamon buns are my family and I’s favorites so I made two batches and froze a batch so we could have them later on in the quarantine.

▲ I TOOK THIS picture at my favorite local corner store, they changed their hours. I’ve been going there since I was 7, and I’m really close to the owner Solomon. We chat all the time and I remember when I went through a breakup of a three year relationship he was really kind to me, and I miss going there all the time and I worry for Solomon’s health while he is still working.

▼ With all this time provided by quarantine, I decided to learn a new skill that I’ve always been too lazy to pick up. ⊲ While quarantine hasn’t been easy, neither has been staying home and going crazy. Due to that, I’ve been exploring different places around me with just a skateboard and some headphones and it’s probably the best getaway from my parents and the stress of online classes. I don’t like the uncertainty of how long this will last but at least I can feel human and somewhat productive outside on my own.

⊳ Since the sudden need to social distance from everyone and everything, I’ve been going to the lake more frequently. No one’s really around and it’s never congested which is how it’s always been which brings some sort of normalcy feeling amongst all the changes. It’s peaceful and beautiful and looks even fresher than before.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING, HOW HAS IT BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL? I’m feeling good, a little stressed but good! The health care center has been shifting a lot of personnel to a COVID testing site—the health care center is repurposing a lot of their employees so you really don’t know from one week to the next where you’ll be working. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU MISS FROM NORMALCY? What do I miss? I miss being able to go to the nursery and buy some spring flowers right now—some brightness in that way would be nice. WHAT DO YOU THINK WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM THIS? We should learn to take life slower and appreciate the people around us. 77

COLOPHON & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All elements designed by Carlos Ferreira with input from those acknowledged below from March to May 2020. I would like to first thank all the photographers and creative people who believed in this project enough to submit not just a photo, but a story. Watching this project grow to include submissions across both the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean amazed me, considering the difficult times. Special thanks to Kathlyn Almeida, Vanessa Cardoza, Noel Forté for all of their support and feedback. I'm very grateful for all of their input and words of encouragement. I'd like to thank Nicolle Batista & Kathlyn Almeida for being the central hubs that put me into contact with more than half of the photographers in this publication. Without their help this publication would have been a mere ten pages. You are amazing Kathlyn & Nicolle. Lastly, I'd like to thank my family Judite Ferreira, Carlos M. Ferreira, Rita Ferreira-Kwaa, and Marta Terra for their immidiate support of this publication when it was just an idea in my head. Additionally for their constant support of my work as a graphic designer. I wouldn't be the person I am today without them and for that I'm incredibly grateful.
