FacadeTipology: Residential & Comunity Center building
Location: Watersportbaan, Ghent, Belgium
Date: 06/2021
Description Objectives:
Foodpark is located in the Watersportbaan in Ghent and is a green infrastructure where productive agricultural places are implemented in public zones, educating the citizens on how to be sustainable. This green infrastructure is created as a path from the street to the waterside, with lots of leisure zones and markets, where people can enroll in activities to cultivate food. The project also offers composting areas and fertilizers by reusing biological waste from the residents. This way it encourages people to be more eco-friendly.
• Bring back functions and activities to the open public spaces.
• Connection between public spaces & living spaces;
• Creation of office spaces where the play of the slabs results in different relations on each floor;
• Visibility in the facade whenever a floor is doble height.
• Creation of building crowns to enlarge the public program of the building
FOOD PARK | group work Portfolio | Carlos BártoloA walkable slope with bushes, flowers and grass growing on it.
Foodpark stores its water reserves underground. These are used for watering our plants as well as for sanitation.
This extra insulation keeps our buildings cool in summer and minimises heat loss in winter. In addition to heat and cold insulation, this glass also provides better sound insulation.
By using climbing plants that grow in front of our glass façade, the building will not only integrate more into its green surroundings, but also have a cooling effect in summer.
Our structure consists of steel columns encased in wood.
TRIPPLE GLASS FACADE GREEN FACADEVertical Farming is an economically cautious and efficient choice as it grows quickly, weighs little and occupies less area.
A wadi retains rainwater and purifies it, after which the water infiltrates into the subsoil. In this way, the wadi helps against flooding and drought.
Pedestrians and cyclists are dominant in traffic. A safe storage place for cyclists can be found at our vertical farm.
On the groundfloor is a culinary center where students who go to school at the Watersportbaansite can have culinary classes. The center is organised around an inner courtyard with a ramp that leads to the roof and the upper levels with public access.
Foodpark has a green pedestrian pathway connecting the mixed function building,to the other building all the way to the canal.
There is a closed cycle of production and waste, so it is possible to use the harvested compost to fertilize plants.
The apartment is designed as a space that can evolve throughout the years, according to the family’s growth within it, fulfilling its changing needs.Starting from a single-person-studio and then, when in need of more space, it can expand into a family-sized apartment
