1971-1977 Centre Georges Pompidou

Rogers' and Piano's concept for the Centre Pompidou drew major influences from the works of Cedric Price who experimented in the 1960s with open forms and flexible spaces. To maximize internal space, they turned the construction inside-out and exposed a skeleton of brightly colored tubes for mechanical systems. The ducts on the outside of the building are colour-coded: blue for air, green for fluids, yellow for electricity cables and red for movement and flow (elevators, stairs) and safety (fire extinguishers). As with Price's Fun Palace, an unbuilt project, the priority was to maximise functional movement and flow, freeing up internal space and facilitating the interaction between different disciplines. 8

DESIGNERS + COLOR

The Cultural Center George Pompidou is one of the most idealic examples of structural expressionism; many windows, fewer interior elements allowing for greater space, steel framed, and edging on industrial – yet too creative t be considered so. This style shows off the results of the latest cutting-edge technology that made High-Tech Architecture possible. Structural expressionism = function over form. Many skyscrapers today use structural expressionism in their designs because it enables larger interior spaces, and the use of skeleton pipe steel allows for taller structures. 9

From the interior out, one can tell that color motivates the movement of pleople. It is clear in the photographs hoe vivrat the elements seem in the complex design. This building is recently planned for a renovation to preserve the value within the colors and the complex structural members. The building is very sucessful in bringing color to it’s surrounding. The streets aurrounding the building seem more vivrant themselfs. This design is particularly intelligent because most of the vivrat colors are place in the back side of the building one typically finds the uglier parts of a building. Overall the building created a tremendous impact on it’s surrounding and is concidered a key element in Paris, partly due to it’s colors.

Architect: Richard Rogers was born in Florence Italy in the year 1933. He First attended the Architectural Association School in London before Graduating from Yale University. Richard and his first wife Sue worked in a partnership with the renowned Norman Foster and his wife Wendy Foster. His interest in uninterrupted interior spaces has made Rogers an heir to the functionalist tradition. His concern with total flexibility and obvious technical imagery has been termed Late Modern. However, his more recent works have turned to the images of the early Modernists, notably Mendelsohn. 11

Architect: Renzo Piano was born in Genova, Italy, on September 14th 1937. He started at the School of Architecture Polytechnic of Milan. He gained a lot of experience working alongside Franco Albini and with his father's construction company. Jean ProuvĂŠ was a great influence in his professional life. Renzo also worked with Louis Kahn in Philadelphia and with Makowski in London before founding the office "Piano & Rogers" in 1971, a partnership with the English architect Richard Rogers. After the death of Rice, he founded the office "Renzo Piano Building Workshop" which is set currently based in Genoa and Paris, with more than 100 professionals involved in their projects, including architects, engineers and specialists. Renzo Piano takes advantage of the technology in his projects, always in search of the benefits it can bring to the comfort and needs of the user. In his career he has won major architectural awards, such as the Pritzker Prize, in 1998, and the AIA Gold Medal in 2008. 12

DESIGNERS + COLOR CONCLUSION

The color piping brings life to the surrounding area. They represent: Blue for circulating air (air conditioning) Yellow for circulating electricity

In conclusion, great designers like these create fascinating buildings through their knowledge of materials and color. They arrange color in such a way that is not overwhelming and serves a purpose. It is not used as a last minute decision but as functional element in the building.

Green for circulating water Red for circulating people (escalators and lifts).

PSYHOLOGY + PERCEPTION + COLOR

FILM: Amelie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)

The movie Amelie is a stunning story of a young woman in France. The story is told very fast and with an extreme amount of detail. The film is narrated and starts by detailing the events leading up to the present time in the film with a yellow hue. Brilliantly, the film’s yellow hue washes over the scenes of many past events and important moments. As the film progresses, Amelie is on the search and hopeful to find something and then the color surrounding her turns green. The green hues show a consistent happy and inquisitive nature to the main character. Towards the end of the film, the character is adorned with red to show intensity in her emotions for a guy. As she encounters this guy, red also plays a role in depicting her level of comfortably and intensity with the situation. The film uses color throughout very creatively. I have never seen a film depicted by it’s use of color like this one. 15

Yellow in this movie was used as a hue in scenes that would reflect the recent past or that would lead up tp the present time in the movie. In this scene the yellows are there at the moment she discovers a great mystery that leads her to what the movie is about. Green is used throughout the movie when happy events occur and this scene shows a happy encounter. 16

PSYHOLOGY + PERCEPTION + COLOR

Green is used in this scene because the main character is passionate about finding something. She is happy and hopeful for what she might find. Green is also used through the movie at times when she is in a state of wonder and excitement. This dark red shows us how passionate she really is about what she is doing. 17

This scene clearly speaks for itself, if you watch the movie, because the sexual atmosphere coupled with the red colors signify passion and intensity. This scene depicts the guy s need to find something passionate because of the color he surrounds himself with. The blue is am interesting color in the film because of how scarce they used it. Blue in this movie depicts an unusual event or place, in this case a sex store.

18

PSYHOLOGY + PERCEPTION + COLOR

In this scene she is very timid and scared to talk to a guy she has feelings for and it is depicted by the shy red polkadots on her shirt. The green color surrounding her tells us that she is in a happy place while the little to no red on her symbolizes shyness. 19

Blue in this movie symbolizes something strage and unusual. The room around the main character is red meaning her intensity and the blue lamp stands out like a sore thumb. The red room is translated as her feelings for a guy but the blue lamp lets the viewers know that something is off. In this scene the character is doing something very unusual and the contrasting colors depict that.

20

PSYHOLOGY + PERCEPTION + COLOR CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this movie won many awards because it resonated inside of the viewers. Most people watching this film never studied color theory, but when watching they get the sense that the director is a masterful scene editor that created arrays of emotions through color.

As the character developed in the film, so did the color. The film started with a yellow hue that symbolized the past. Then the film introduced the color green to symbolize happiness for our main character. Finally towards the peak of her emotional state within the film, hues of red symbolized her intensity. Blue was an odd color in this movie and only appeared a few times to depict something out of the ordinary. Color was really successful in the layout of this film and without color the film would only be half as entertaining. Overall, this is the most obvious use of color in a film that I have seen. The yellows, greens and reds really told the story of Amelie in a simple fashion as opposed to the detailed narration which complicated 21 the story with every sentence.

BALANCE + COLOR

HEALTHCARE + COLOR

Balance - the relationship of different hues to one another when each is perceived to be equal in perceived visual weight. Contrast - opposition in order to show or emphasize differences between two objects.

These concepts define the basis of design and my interest in art. Contrast and balance come together in any great design. In my designs, i explore a great deal of contrast in form and it is my challenge to find the balance in that. In the future, I will be brave enough to also incorporate color into my designs but as of now, it is complicated on its own balancing the forms in simple white. Color is such a medium for expression I will forever be a student of it`s hues.

23

Designing with a hospital mentality has come a long way with the use of color. When treating patients, trial and error are involved in almost all of the color decisions used today inside hospitals. It is fascinating how our subconscious reacts to color. More fascinating is how humans still can't accurate measure one color with one feeling. This is mostly because of how vastly different we all are. Color is always changing in reality because the viewer will never experience exactly the same color as the designer.

24

RHYTHM + COLOR

RETAIL + COLOR

Rhythm - a natural evolutionary trait in nature that can be transferred to interior spaces and can be further emphasized with color.

This chapter talked about all the architectural elements I was waiting to hear about. The harmony of colors found in nature display the most coherent rhythms that exist. Architects mimic nature through their designs because of the natural structural properties it exhibits. The structure of naturally occurring shapes in leaves and shells have to lead to numerous designs. One of my favorites being La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona by Antonio Gaudi.

L’Occitane is a small store located on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. The store sells creams for the body and the color most used is yellow.

26

RETAIL + COLOR

CONTRAST OF COLOR The reds vs.. The greens on the shelf are strikingly apparent. The saturation of the products compared to the yellows of the store is very notables. The store almost looks dull alongside the products.

CONTRAST OF VALUE

The light yellows vs. darker yellows are a theme in this store. Even the wood on the frame of the window is percieved as a warm yellow.

COLOR EMPHASIS Emphasis is being created on the color of the product shown in this display. Attracting the eye by aligning the bottle in the picture directly in the center, giving it an almost florescent color, and placing a branch of yellow flowers inside of it.

CONTRAST OF TEXTURE The rough walls, smooth wood and solid hard floors create contrast throughout. The texture of the ball Hanging on the roof is unlike any other texture in the Store, bringing significance to it.

In conclusion, this store is beautiful beyond question. It stands out and is visible across a busy street. This is due to the delightful color that is coming from the design of this store. This designer knew exactly the color combinations to play against each other to create great attention to the store. The products on display look almost edible the way they are presented because of their contrast with the colors of the store.

Contract in colors to the rest of the store, all the way in the back of the store. In terms of wayfaring, the register is in the back in front of the TV.

SCALE + COLOR

YOUR CAMERA + COLOR

Proportion - defined by the size relationships between elements and the visual composition. Unity - defined as the repetition of color to achieve a unified whole.

Concepts like these fascinate me because the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In my architecture career, i will always seek a better composition. These terms are two that I will be investigating in my career. I am excited to work with form and color to create masterpieces. I am inspired by this section to create monumental architecture that can transpire centuries.

In figure 1, the picture frames guides the viewers eyes across the spaces, overwhelming the eye against the while background. The typography on the walls in soft pinks and grays are blurred by the strong lines that the frames create. In figure 2, the artistic shapes that the wax creates gives a unique feel to the room. The light from the candle and the shadows produced also give the room shape. Figure 3 is the bar table. The soft color of the marble and the earthy tone it adds to the room is perfect located where the food is served. A reminder of a home since marble is common in expensive kitchens.

Figure 4 illustrates pattern in the architecture of the space with the columns. The typography also unites the space incredibly well. It is all tied by the predominant colors red white and black.

Figure 1. The frames form imaginary lines in between them that the viewer connects through space. Their arrangement overwhelms the space and the lines of the frames are bold against the white background.

Figure 3. The marble brings and earthy texture to a modern room.

Figure 2.These candles add an artistic ever changing shape to the atmosphere of the room. The light moving due to the wind also fills the room with shadows that give shape to the space.

HOSPITALITY + COLOR CONCLUSION

Discussion Figure 5 shows all the lines coming together in this design. The picture frames and the tiles on the floor are making up most of the view in terms of the lines they create. The frames brings a continuity that is thrown off by the continuity that the floor tiles provide. Figure 6 depicts the shape of the rooms, dominated by these stands that are modular and see through. The whole room is chromed and mirrors are incorporated into the walls. These cabinets are mirrored throughout the room and the modular shape gives the feel of order.

Figure 5

texture

In Figure 7 the table stands the length of the whole room and brings a warm wood texture to the room. The walls are mirrors and the cabinets are chromed so the only non reflective item in this room is this wood texture. The smooth wood gives a feel of comfort and is placed in the center where people would gather around. Making the mirror walls just a backdrop to the senses. In Figure 8 the pattern changes in the floors are staggering and old fashion. Being an older building, tiles like these make up most of the hotel’s loby.

In conclusion, this hotel`s lobby was a place I wanted to return to. The use of patterns on the wall created a sense of unity. The candles threw lights in every direction and they were positioned directly in the center of the lobby making them affect the color of everything.

Line The lines used on the wall and ceiling’s red cladding defines the space. The lines seem structural on the wall, especially in the red color. It’s also hard to ignore the lines of the railings in this picture as it guides you towards your destination beautifully while brightening the space. The glass is used here to not overlap the lines created by these elements. Shape The circle is overwhelming in the interiors. As shown the lamps and the furniture come from a circle in conceptual form. The circles are also seen in the background lights as well as on the glass. Texture The white and light colors make the place feel clean at all times. It makes a place feel antibacterial in a sense yet modern. The walls are cladded in this picture with tiles that shine under the white light. The texture on the back wall of this picture is designed to attract your attention back to the hallways and where the workplace is away from the lounge. It seems like a strategy at the workplace to attract the workers away from the lounge areas in order to be more productive at work. Pattern The circles is a pattern that ties in the design at this workplace. Here, the lights add a circular feel to the square walls. As seen in all the pictures, all of the lights are in the shape of a circle.

Weight Due to the color choice of predominantly light gray colors and white, the interiors seem very light. The visual weight of the interior is very dramatically highlighted in black. For example, the red chair in a white room full of gray chairs make the person experiencing sitting in the red chair feel special. It The red color is dominant in special areas of the interiors and it attracts the person towards it.

47

The design intention of this office with the use of color was to attract the clients in the offices to the counters or stairs. This wayfinding using color is changed with the program throughout using the green color here. The experience of the overwhelming white surroundings and pops of color is extremely modern and an effective way to layout an office that meets with different clients regularly and sells different products all the time like an ad agency. The use of color is very effective when considering the program it servers.

GENER COLOR + VARIETY _ WORKPLACE

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the employees at this firm enjoy a peaceful work environment due to the colors in the interiors. The way art pops in every room is unique to this project. The colors take a step backward throughout most of the design except for when unique moments of red happen.

CULTURE + COLOR

COLOR + VARIETY _ HOSPITALITY

CUBA The colors of Cuba are directly connected to nature and tourism. Cuba is an island with a lot of forested areas that are home to colorful animals and flowers. In Cuba, the culture is very connected to the outside world. Natural ventilation is used in most houses and the residents enjoy most of their time around nature. The climate of Cuba only allows for certain foods to be grown. These foods are vibrant as well. The Cuban people is used to eating natural colorful foods as a part of their everyday life and is portrayed in their clothes and architecture. The colors seen in the architecture reflect the playful essence of the people. The variety of color buildings is also due to the tourism in the capital city where these pictures were taken. There, the people thrive from millions of tourist walking around. These tourists are more inclined to walk down a street where the houses are painted in different colors and they are more likely to spend their money there too. The poverty in Cuba is so great most of the buildings are in dire need of restorations, the ones that are restored are meant to attract the tourist. 51

CULTURE + COLOR

BAZIL The colors of brazil are inspired by their culture. Lively and dramatic, the Brazilian people are much like their colors. Famous for their carnivals, Brazilians are known to have extravagant parties that last for days. In these carnivals, the residents and people from all around the world gather in the streets where cars adorned with roses and colors pass by. The colors in the carnivals are bound only by what is found in nature. Roses and feathers are the inspiration for a lot of the color combinations. Since Brazil is an immense country with a lot of rain forest, the people there are used to seeing the vibrant colors of nature. The architecture shown here comes from the bigger cities where high-density housing dominated the landscape. As one can tell the colors are used at times to differentiate from house to house. In a lace so compact, something as simple as the color is a great method of wayfinding.

53

54

CULTURE + COLOR

CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, these cultures derive their colors from nature and their way of life. Color plays a role in the foregrounds of these societies economies due to the tourism. The attraction to color variations that are displayed play on a vital animalistic side of humans.

55

In conclusion, this class now allows me to see the world through rose-colored glasses. It was wonderful to talk about color in such a free and expressive manner. The book has expanded my creative thinking to a new level by introducing concepts and ideas never before imagined by me. I enjoyed taking a lot because of the knowledge gained through the readings and site visits.
