The Link : : Charlotte, NC Prompt: A mixed-use office building that integrates structure, building service, enclosure, and site with the intent to create a ‘phtyo-tower’ that will work towards a net zero energy consumption. About the project: My partner in the project, Xackary Fromal, and I wondered if it would be possible to address socio-economic issues in addition to the environmental concerns. We found that social capital, health, and location can help low-income individuals move out of poverty. The Link features affordable dormitory style living so that young aspiring professionals can be around like-minded individuals and in the heart of the city to make critical social connections. Residential spaces, open offices, public gardens, and public realm at the base of the tower are all spaces were these connections could happen. Sun, wind, and precipitation have all been taken into account to contribute to the phyto-tower and conceptually address socio-economic issues.

La Miniera : : Rome, Italy Prompt: An aqua park that references the tradition of ancient public baths. The site is near Porta Maggiore and immediately adjacent to the Aurelian Wall. Key programmatic elements are indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, and library. About the project: I noted the build of calcium deposits on hard surfaces throughout Rome as seen on this portion of the Aurelian Wall on our site. There was something beautifully organic about it because of its stark contrast to the regular and symmetrical order the surrounding built environment. These deposits were also a physical representation of time passing by. I imagined a series of travertine columns that would trickle water along its sides and ultimately create such deposits over time. I also critically considered the program to preserve the historic organization of spaces while creating a modern aesthetic. The product features a distinct sauna tower that stands at the end of the indoor pool and a mechanical façade of books along the street edge where visitors can mount a ‘cherry picker’ lift to pick out books.

Vinum Fabrica : : Asheville, NC Prompt: A winery along the French Broad River in the River Arts District of Asheville that accommodates wine production from the receiving of grapes to bottling. The final product was to include some physical evidence or abstract reference to ‘mark-making’. About the project: This project was conceptualized as a factory that would use robotic arms to facilitate at every stage of wine production. This removes the need for forklifts, a typical necessity for a winery. This has architectural implications, as the floor no longer had to be flat or gently sloped for forklifts. The floor was thus reconsidered as a stage upon which the performance of wine production could take place. The southwestern façade, which faces the river, reveals the robots and mechanical equipment within through a double skin façade. The outermost layer is a foldable translucent skin, and the idea here is that when it is pulled down a visitor in the distance will experience an impression, or mark, of the production within. He or she will be pulled in to investigate the factory further. Weather permitting, the skin will fold up and an uninterrupted view of the production from start to end will be provided.

Detailed Section

Shards : : Dallas, TX Prompt: A warehouse that includes one or more structural systems in wood, steel, and concrete. The site is a vast open field in an industrial park. About the project: Shards is a mini-storage warehouse available for the surrounding community. Concepts behind this projects are concerned with grand gestures via the roof planes that are receptive of sun and wind. It is a hybrid concrete and wood building that attempts to structurally and aesthetically balance the two.
