Montalcino Spuntone Complex Siena, Italy

Montalcino is a land of vineyards, well known for its unique landscape, however in the Spuntone Valley, due to its current parking use, we find a significant stain on its identity. Therefore, we believed that it wasn’t necessary to design a new urban park but rather plan carefully a restoration on the landscape, returning it to its initial state, boosting the image of the city.

Team: Carlos Orihuela, Giacomo Massoni,

The terraced school building will appear as a mass sitting on the hillside, facing Montalcino, carved from the outside, modeled after the landscape and nature, trying to minimize its built impact. The large green platform above the underground garage will be a new city gate, a public square, a place with educational and social potential.

Client: Montalcino Municipality

Advocat Cove Benissa, Spain 2021

The proposal for the pedestrianization and enhancement of Cove Advocat is based on the desire for the re-naturalization of the place and the recovery of a more direct relationship with the sea and the landscape.

Team: Carlos Orihuela, Pablo Valero, Michele

The project bases a large part of its efforts on eliminating existing elements rather than incorporating new ones. Reducing the large concrete footprint that directly affects both the landscape and functional quality of the site is the main action of the proposal. We propose a redefinition of the maritime edge of Cove Advocat with the aim of blurring the boundary between the natural and the artificial, reducing human intervention to the tracing of a simple line in nature. We believe that this action is what is really necessary in order to enjoy again the rich landscape of the place and to be able to reconvert this space into an attractive place with great potential both for Benissa and its immediate surroundings. Correcting the mistakes of the past and recovering the characteristic profile of the coves is what will enable Cove Advocat to be placed once again on the map of the Alicante coastline, without the need to raise our voices to do so.

Client: Benissa Municipality

AMAEM Campus Alicante, Spain

Our proposal brings the exceptional opportunity to give this cluster of buildings a new life and image. It seeks to rescue its original spirit, while creating a campus that is flexible, healthy and adaptable to new and emerging ways of working The project seeks to address the existing architectural discontinuity between the buildings on plots 31 and 33 Alona Street, offering a complete and inclusive new image for the entire campus. The new south-west façade of the building at 33 Alona Street will finish off the reddish wall, ending with a solid façade, with high thermal mass and deep punctures in response to the sun’s heat. The limits between wall and façade are blurred, simplifying it and opening similar openings that offer access and transparency to the outdoor spaces of the Campus. In contrast, the transparent north-west façade, with floor-to-ceiling glass for lighting, will be interrupted by louvres for the privacy of workers from the street. The main strategy for the building’s energy efficiency is to reduce demand by optimizing natural light and ventilation, designing the façades according to their orientation and incorporating nature and water in the courtyards to improve the building’s temperature, acoustics and air quality.

Abaran City Council and Cultural Centre Abaran, Spain

Our proposal for the Abarán Town Hall and the Art and Culture Centre is based on the urban values of the place. Those urban and plot constraints presented us with a great opportunity to deal with concepts from the Islamic origins of the town of Abarán.

Team: Carlos Orihuela, Pablo Valero, David

The irregular plot of the site, bounded by party walls on one side and narrow streets on the other two sides, suggested the possibility of working with the void and the courtyard as a resource to resolve with quality the spatiality and habitability of the existing building of the town hall and the new building. Our proposal is based on a cluster of two buildings that traces the perimeter and consolidates the compactness of the structure of the city, creating a large void in the interior of the plot. This strategy of a more intimate sense, where the richness and vibration is poured into the courtyard, is typical of the Muslim city, always more reserved and “secret”.

Client: Abaran Municipality

Nerja Library Malaga, Spain

Our proposal for the municipal library of Nerja was conceived on the basis of the urban values of the place. The conditions in which the project had to be inserted presented us with a great opportunity to explore the juxtaposition and interbreeding of the domestic scale and the public or institutional scale. We based our proposal on blurring the boundaries between the singular public building and the residence, and on the idea that the library would be a unique public building. We based our proposal on the blurring of the boundaries between the singular public building and the residence. This is imported into all areas of the project, emphasising the ambiguous and imprecise transitional spaces. To address this, we designed a system of courtyards that dissolve the boundaries between the building and the street, between the interior and exterior, between the collective and the intimate, between the architecture and the city. Learning from Mediterranean architecture, the building opens up to three voids that will be the building’s main environmental tool. These perforations assume the sequence of identity that characterize the typology of the Andalusian house: Entrance hall - Atrium - Patio garden.

Home +

Modular and sustainable homes for everyone!

Home + is founded on the understanding that the way we are building our homes has a high environmental impact , low personalisation and a price that is unaffordable for everyone. At the same time in almost all fields, other products are getting higher quality at a lower price, such as telephones, electric cars or furniture, unlike what is happening with housing. Home + offers a new holistic approach, which uses the strength of modulation and technology to develop a system that can be adapted to people and their context. A modular timber building system, manufactured in local workshops, packed and quickly assembled on site creating a wide variety of homes. This ensures a more sustainable and CO2-reducing construction method and a circular approach to the management and life cycle of our buildings. Seeking to turn the negative impact of housing on the planet into a positive, temporary and self-sufficient model that boosts its relationship with nature and optimises its resources.

Houses MH Ceuta, Spain

Situated along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Spain´s southern city of Ceuta, the private houses have been carefully sited, prioritizing the spectacular sea view and optimizing the shape of the plot. The climate response and the attempt to bring the sea´s views all the way until the rear garden has shaped the massing of the building, sculpting this binoculars pieces that are facing the sea.

Team: Carlos Orihuela, Natalio Hayón

Area:

Plot 1,440 m²

Efficient form shades and cools the building during hot summers. The generous fully glazes living areas maximize seas views and terraces dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. These verandas take advantage of Ceuta´s exceptional climate, capturing cooling sea breezes and encouraging outdoor life style. A tranquil natural landscape of native planting , grasses and lily ponds flows through the building and cool the entrance spaces.

Houses 360 m2

House IS Vejer, Spain

The main goal of the project is to ensure that the house establishes a close and essential relationship with nature, so that one becomes an extension of the other and vice versa. This is achieved with a simple and compact mass that sits in the biggest clearing on the plot, creating a boundary between the front and rear gardens. The first garden hosts the family orchard, the barbecue area and the swimming pool, so the most public uses of the house will be located adjacent to it: terrace, living room and kitchen. It is understood that there is an ascending privacy in the exterior areas, therefore the house locates the most intimate life in the south zone. The massing will be broken up with 3 openings on the south, east and west elevations. These perforations will improve the lighting and will help to generate an exterior-interior gradient through these enclosed natures. Regarding the materiality, the house will be supported by a double-leaf load-bearing wall, with a lime finish linked to the local and Mediterranean tradition. The aim is to reduce the environmental footprint and use a fast, economical and efficient construction system. Wooden carpentry has been considered and the windows and main openings will be protected from the sun through large mobile Majorcan-style shutters that will also act as a closing element and will help the passive ventilation of the house.
