Austro Control Vienna Tower Team: Location: Area: Type:

06 40

AZPML Vienna, Austria 59,099 m2 1st Prize Competiton, TBC Completion

The proposal for the Austro Control Tower building in Vienna aims to strike a balance between a distinctive identity for the complex and an efficient operation, both in terms of flexibility of use and environmental performance. We have tried to reach a solution where expression and efficiency are mutually reinforcing. The tower volume was first determined by a combination between the provision of a floorplate with a column free 7m bay surrounding a central core, and the application of shading regulations which constraints the position of the tower to the southernmost location on the site, to keep away from the University building. These two constraints produced a rhomboidal floorplate, derived from the geometry of the site and the shading conditions. The maximum recommended height in the area, 100m above the +8 level gives us a 30 storey building with floor to floor heights of 3,60m, which we consider adequate for a commercial use, and suitable also for residential functions.

Sitting between the towering Caucasus Mountains and the majestic Black Sea, Imeretinka territory enjoys an exceptional geographical location. These unique conditions set the perfect background for a successful post-Olympic development that could take advantage of: adjacent coastlines, nearby ski resorts, ready-to-go transport facilities and airport, and Olympic sports facilities, all embedded into Sochi greater urban area in a benevolent subtropical weather. The design principles aim at capitalising on these paradisiacal opportunities and formulate a unique Imeretinka bran and identity as the place where the caucasian mountains meet the black sea.At the site’s scale, it also brings reconciliation strategies for some of the site constrains such as the fact that the current seafront access and views of most of the given lots are limited.

For the proposal, we have been considering the principles of the corporate design branding for the whole U-5 Line very carefully. While the corporate design of the line is asking for a treatment of surfaces with an organic quality, we believe that the purely ornamental approach shown in the guidelines is insufficient and we want to provide a specific quality which addresses the nature of the project: an infrastructural project. In this respect, our proposal is to use the interior finishes to address the dynamic nature of the project, not as a mapped, static, irregular surface, but as an actually dynamic surface which connects to the natural. The central concept behind our proposal for the T5 Line Haltestelle Steilshoop consists in a design which will intensify the perception of the train movement, magnifying the dynamic effects of the movement on the surfaces of the platform enclosure.

The building has been developed with the idea of achieving the maximum compactness thus guaranteeing a less energy consumption. At the same time, the different programs are located around a single collective space where all the activities are visually connected, enriching the relations between them. The 22,50x 22,50 m atrium performs as a social and climatic mechanism, which would become an ideal environment to promote the exchange of knowledge and collaboration. It is structured as a ring of program which surround a semi-conditioned atrium space which acts as a connective space for the community of users. Furthermore, it will optimize environmental performance. It provides a continuous transparent band along the office space, which optimizes lighting patterns on the floor by avoiding vertical blockage. It maintains a 45% fenestration rate of the envelope, locating the transparent bands where they are most effective.

Barilla PaviIion Team: Location: Area: Type:

AZPML Pedrignano Parma, Italy 14,000 m2 Open Competition

The Barilla Pavilion will be the spiritual centre of the company in the years to come. Therefore, our central idea for this project is to avoid the design of a functionally specific structure and turn it into a multifunctional structure with a very distinctive spirit which will come to represent Barilla. We imagine the pavilion as a sequence of “chapels” of slightly different scale and geometry, in which the different programs could be loosely fit in the future. The concept of the “chapel” emphasizes the idiosyncratic quality of the project, which would provide different spatial types arising from regular polygons which always have the same side: 21,60m. The regularity of the side is what allows the flexible grouping of these chapels to form a large, continuous structure to host the multiple programs. The interconnected domes will produce a type of space not unlike the radial sequence of chapels that has historically characterized other “spiritual” buildings.

“Cadavere exquis”

26 40

It seems astonishing that two words of such different genealogy can match together. It is known as a game in which each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed. Our proposal is also a game, in which some basic rules are established and others flow freely. It is a proactive strategy, rather than an imposing one which applies to the peninsula but also can expand to the slums. The dwellings are contaminated by this Cadavere Exquis game. They are generated from a rigid core; however, each inhabitant creates its housing space depending on to their resources and aims.

The project aims to recover the former tuna industry of Barbate, which was one of the most successful tuna industries in Andalusia and the economic engine of this town. Although it enjoys an exceptional geographical location it has been closed for years and abandoned. For the proposal, I have been considering the history of the building very carefully, adding only the elements that were strictly necessary. These new elements that joint the existing buildings and with the great canopy, form a cluster of courtyards which will become an ideal environment to promote the exchange of knowledge and collaboration. The treatment of the existing façades showcases the mixed nature of the construction and presents the signs of passing time. It seeks a dialogue between old and new elements, a link between the history of the building, its present and its future.
