Escucha la Ciudad Respirando Listen to the City Breathing
Project Statement With one of the highest levels of pollution in the world, Mexico City’s contamination levels are responsible for many negative effects to both health and social dimensions of its population. In its current state, it becomes important and necessary to create landscapes that are not only aesthetic, but actively restore the natural elements on the site at the same time. There is need for an active landscape, one that filters and cleans its own environment from pollutants that affect lungs, lives and overall health of the city folk. However, the importance and value that landscapes add, especially in the urban areas, are qualities that are undervalued in developing countries. Among political, economic and social disagreements, existing projects that aim to reduce pollutants in the big city, lack the natural coordination that landscapes offer, especially in the case of constructed wetlands. In consequence, environment pollution is a health concern, but also an educational hazard, as its people have not been informed of its value. To address the environmental and health needs of Mexico City, we propose the construction of “Escucha la Ciudad Respirar” (Hear the City Breathe), a landscaping project that takes on the existing location of current Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport. Design: Carlos Reyes, Eduardo Berber, Diana Alcantara Project type: Ecologial Design+Urban Location: Mexico City, Benito Juarez International Airport Date: Winter 2015
Escucha la Ciudad Respirando The project seeks to achieve self-sustainable systems that will improve air and water quality on the site, by purifying and treating them. A landscape has a pulse of its own, slow and calm, allowing the escape from the fast-paced life of the city. Life itself is self-sustainable, nothing is wasted, only transformed. Treatment Cell (D) Phase 4 Treatment Cell (C) Phase 3 Treatment Cell (B) Phase 2 Treatment Cell (A) Phase 1(Waste water input)
Treatment Cells E D C B A
Treatment cell (E) Phase 5 (Treated water/output)
A series of five (A-D) water treatment cells will collect water from the built areas on the site, filter its pollutants by using planting material, and finally purifying the water and storing it. Street Grid Projection Mexico City’s street grid was extended onto the site to create street layout and open space.
Open Space Placement of open spaces were influenced by street grid projection.
Active Nodes The main destinations occur at main street convergence points as well as in open spaces.
Low Flow Surrounding area(12,951 km 3)= 447,459 people Site area=746 hectares Surrounding+site water Total Runoff= 470,925m3 Estimated total water holding capacity=1,909,614m3

Escucha la Ciudad Respirando: practical lung Escucha la ciudad Respirando proposes to become the largest, most important artificial lung in Mexico City’s metropolitan area. It aims to demonstrate the importance of the built landscape as a cleaning and purifying agent, as well as being a beautiful place for its people to enjoy life, nature, and escaping from the daily routine of the city. A landscape is a live entity, a collection of systems that work together in a wide range of areas, from naturalistic, entertainment, and restoration.

Wild Vernal Undulation
Project Statement LAX is a hub or economic and cultural combinations. 62 million people visit LAX every year from all over the world. This site has the opportunity to take the influential economic systems of LAX and fuse it with the natural forms of the sand dunes of near by Dockwieler Beach. Our goal is to create an area of co-habilitation, a symbiotic relationship where people and nature can interact without forcing one or the other out. We are creating an ofrenda (ofering) to threatened habitation, commemorating what was lost and on the verge of extinction, by designing spaces which promote a regrowth of nature but also allow for people to interact and walk amongst this returning wilderness. Wild Vernal Undulation is a buffer zone wedged between the Los Angeles airport and the Westchester/playa del rey community, that channels the user into a space of undulating landforms which house environments for both humans and nature to co-exist in, igniting feelings of discovery and observation.

Creative Works Project Statement Throughout my four years at Cal Poly Pomona I have received a wide range of education which has expanded my knowledge exponentially. Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” philosophy provided me with ample hands on opportunity to work with wood construction, building/creating models, art installations and computer graphics. This knowledge I have received has been invaluable, leaving me feeling confident in expressing my ideas in a clear and visually pleasing way.

Project Statement By 2016, more than 2.3 million people have been placed behind bars by the American criminal justice system which currently houses approximately 22 percent of the world’s prisoners. And due to the steady pattern of prison population proliferation, overpopulation in correctional facilities is a growing concern in the US. Overpopulation in these facilities create a stressful environment for both the corrections officers and inmates. Private corporations have taken advantage of this situation creating the prison-industrial complex that transformed imprisonment into a profitable business. Amidst all this, the mental distress experienced by inmates is another factor of the prison crisis. It is quite difficult to fathom the mental distress that inmates experience; approximately 50 percent of inmates are diagnosed with at least one mental disorder, a consequence of deinstitutionalization during the mid-to-late 1900s. Despite the elevating problem presented by the prison crisis, the phenomenon has become accepted as the norm in society, desensitizing people to the injustice and inefficiency behind prison bars. Unless a prison reform is implemented, the quality of the detention centers will continue to deteriorate. This project was a response to the existing prison crisis in order to create awareness about a critical matter that continues to be ignored and overlooked. A representational prison cell was installed in a public space to provide an opportunity for passersby to experience being confined in a restricted volume. The interactive installation displayed messages and facts intended to provoke pondering about the lives affected by the corrupted penal system. Essentially, this project challenged people to either remain desensitized to the critical matter or spend time to actually recognize the negative impact of the system.

Concept Statement The concrete channel people understand to be the Los Angeles River today holds a monumental significance in California history that made the prosperousness of the city of Los Angeles possible. Despite the integral role of the Los Angeles River both presently and in the past, it is one of the most neglected infrastructure in the city. Due to people’s negligence of the effects of improperly discarded waste material, an unquantifiable amount of litter ends up in the river, deteriorating the water quality. Los Rafters x Los Angeles reveals not only the presence of the river but also the physical manifestation of people’s indifference to the current conditions of the river. By aggregating discrete trash elements from three separate sites across the Los Angeles River, three individual rafts were constructed and released on-site. This critical stunt triggered controversy because unwanted debris was deliberately introduced into the river ecology in the process; however, it simply utilized native debris that would have ended up in the river regardless of our intervention. Los Rafters x Los Angeles applies a synthesis of controversy and provocation as a tactic to expose the reality of the Los Angeles River to the public.
Rendering/Narrative
Cities of the Future The world is ever-changing, a living breathing organism, both growing and unpredictable. Our society both adaptable and malleable is growing and ever-changing with the cities. What once was will no longer be most beneficial and we as humans will evolve with the surrounding environment. With overpopulation land use will become much more efficient, using all forms of viable land. Combining both area and height for agriculture in order to feed the growing numbers of people. Society as whole will have alter the way it lives in order to survive the changes that we are ultimately responsible for. In order to generate change we must modify not only the way we live in the world but the way we think. The most difficult change will come when people realize they can no longer rely on there old thought process and ideology. We as humans get stuck in our ways when it comes to thinking, so closed off we can only see what’s directly in front of us. We can’t directly see overpopulation and the way it is effecting our world, we can not see the devastation, the deterioration of society, therefore it does not exist. However there is so much that can not be seen but must be understood or at least acknowledged. We must learn to work as whole instead of just one person who is living their own life without any thought given to the other people living around them. In order to thrive we must acknowledge that we are a society that must work together in order to find a state of homeostasis. We must not rely on only our eyes in order to really see what needs to change.

Residential Work Statement These next pages are a collection of design and build projects that I have completed from start to finish. For around 10 years I have been exposed to landscape maintenance/construction field working under my father’s landscape company. These projects were my renditions of the client’s thoughts, needs and desires, a majority moving away from water intense landscapes and incorporating more sustainable options. Some hardscape installations included in these projects were brick patios, stone mortared walls, free standing retaining walls, and concrete retaining walls
