WHAT IS

THE BYLINE

?

As a child I used to staple A sheets together and try to make my own magazines, making (crap) illustrations with the colouring pencils. Even though I usually made a mess of it, it has remained a passion of mine. Inspired by collecting magazines like mundial, rabona & OOF, I realised that I could combine my love for football and all it relates to with design, so I chose to make my own zine.

CONTENTS THE BYLINE IN THIS INAUGURAL ISSUE WE’RE TAKING A LOOK AT THE NUMBER 1’S, THE BACKBONE OF ANY TEAM: THE GOALIES. WE’LL BE LOOKING AT FAMOUS GOALIES THAT HAVE LEFT THEIR MARK ON THE FOOTBALLING WORLD, WHETHER BY WEARING SOMETHING NOT EVEN A PEACOCK WOULD DARE TO BE SEEN IN, OR SLALOMING WITH THE BALL STUCK TO THEIR FEET TO THE HALFWAY LINE A LA HIGUITA, OR JUST PLAINLY BEING INCREDIBLY GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO. WE WOULDN’T HAVE FOOTBALL AS WE KNOW IT WITHOUT SPECTACULAR SAVES AND HEART-WRENCHING CLANGERS, SO HERE’S TO YOU, KEEPERS OF THE WORLD. YOU TEND TO GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK, BUT WE LOVE YOU JUST THE SAME.

IN A COUNTRY FULL OF towns, rovers & uniteds THERE’S ONLY ONE O R I E N T

It’s been tough being a Leyton orient supporter as of late. FROM being on the verge of qualifying TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE LEAGUE ONE PLAYOFF FINAL IN WEMBLEY in 2014, THEY WERE TAKEN OVER BY Francesco Becchetti, AN ECCENTRIC ITALIAN BUSINESSMAN WHOSE MISMANAGEMENT OF THE CLUB WAS SO SEVERE IT SAW THE TEAM RELEGATED TWICE in 3 years. The O’s were facing THE VERY REAL THREAT OF LIQUIDATION.

I hadn’t visited Brisbane road, their home ground, since 2008 when they were a mainstay in league one, so I had missed going to my local team. The clubs’ conditions were much different back then, but today was their penultimate home game of the season, when after the turmoil of the previous years they were able to consolidate a place

THE BYLINE

BECCHETTI’S TORRID ownership of the club has fortunately come to an end, and the survival of the 130 year-old club was ensured through the participation of the supporters and the financing of a two businessmen who have become the saviours of the club.

4 Years on from the loss at WEMBLEY, THEY’RE FINISHING THEIR FIRST CAMPAIGN IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE, THE 5TH TIER OF PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL.

in the division, a situation that allows them to build for next season. Today’s game was against playoffchasing wrexham, another club with lots of history but as of the time outside the play-off positions. they needed to come to LONDON TO FACE an emboldened orient, who were on a run of form at home that made tHEIR BRISBANE ROAD HOME A BIT OF A FORTRESS.

GOING DOWN TO THE STADIUM WAS AS FAMILIAR AS IT HAD BEEN A DECADE AGO, WHEN AS A 16 YEAR-OLD I WENT TO WATCH THE GAMES WITH MY FRIENDS FROM SCHOOL. THIS TIME I MADE THE JOURNEY ALONE, BUT IT WAS FAMILIAR ENOUGH. The walk from Leyton underground station to the stadium is a short one, & you’re assimilated into the crowd all walking in the same direction. AS I MENTIONED, THE CLUB IS QUITE LOCAL, SO THE ATMOSPHERE IS DEFINITELY VERY THE BYLINE

DIFFERENT TO A PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHDAY: FOR A START, THE COST IS MUCH MUCH LOWER. A ticket to get in cost me £18, & the supporters were almost exclusively local. a group of middle-aged males each finishing a can of beer in hand stood outside the south stand turnstiles, searching for their tickets while one let out a massive fart before stepping into the building via the turnstiles. it is definitely something different. On the day, orient won 1-0 through a macauley bonne glancing header that nestled into the bottom corner & proved to be the final score. wrexham’s lacklustre finishing on the day meant their play-off chase was out of their hands. the bleak atmosphere of the last few years is no more, & is a testament to the spirit of the supporters who have battled to preserve their club’s existence. thanks to them & the timely intervention of the two businessmen, orient’s finances are secure & their biggest problem now is promotion back into the english football league. IN PREPARATION FOR THE WORLD CUP IN WHICH BOTH TEAMS HAVE QUALIFIED FOR, COLOMBIA FACED AUSTRALIA IN CRAVEN COTTAGE, IN THE SECOND FIXTURE OF A TWO MATCH INTERNATIONAL BREAK. AUSTRALIA UNDOUBTEDLY CAME INTO THE MATCH WITH MUCH MORE TO PROVE, HAVING BEEN TROUNCED 4-1 BY NORWAY JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE, WHEREAS COLOMBIA HAD SEEN OFF THE FRENCH NATIONAL SIDE IN PARIS IN A SURPRISING 2-1 WIN FOR THE SOUTH AMERICANS. WITH THAT IN MIND, IT WAS EASY TO SEE WHY THE COLOMBIANS OF THE UK CAME IN DROVES TO WATCH THEIR NATIONAL TEAM PERFORM IN WHAT WAS EXPECTED TO BE AN EASY WIN.

THE ESTIMATED POPULATION OF COLOMBIANS IN THE UK REACHES 88.000,

YET IT SEEMED LIKE A QUARTER OF THEM HAD PACKED INTO CRAVEN COTTAGE ON THIS COLD TUESDAY NIGHT, VASTLY OUTNUMBERING THE AUSTRALIANS IN ATTENDANCE. THE MATCH WAS A BATTLED AFFAIR, WITH COLOMBIA SHOWING GLIMPSES OF QUALITY BUT THE LACK OF GOALS WILL MOSTLY FALL ON THE SHOULDERS OF MIGUEL BORJA WHO, NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING, HIT THE POST TWICE & SHOT WIDE FROM THE PENALTY SPOT IN THE 86TH MINUTE. AUSTRALIA PROVED A DOGGED SIDE & WILL TAKE HEART IN THEIR DISPLAY, SPECIFICALLY WITH THEIR MATCH AGAINST PERU IN THE WORLD CUP IN MIND.

THE ART OF Goalkeeper’s

THE SCORE IS 0-0. IT’S THE 88TH MINUTE, AND YOUR MATE CALLUM HAS JUST clumsily BUNDLED OVER THE OPPOSITION’S SPEEDY WINGER WHO HAS HAD THE BETTER OF HIM DOWN THE WING ALL GAME LONG. THE REF WHISTLES for A PENALTY. YOU’RE THE LAST LINE OF DEFENCE, BUT ...WHAT’S THIS? YOU’RE WEARING A VINTAGE PETER SCHMEICHEL MANCHESTER UNITED HOME GOALKEEPER’S TOP, YOUR SHOT-STOPPING ABILITY IS INCREASED BY 10 POINTS & AT THE VERY LEAST YOU’RE GOING TO DISTRACT THE HELL OUT OF THEIR PENALTY KICK TAKER.

THOSE HORRENDOUS GOALKEEPING SHIRTS (WE ALL KNOW WHAT I’M REFERRING TO) ARE NOW MERE MEMORIES, RELICS OF A BYGONE ERA: THE STYLE HAS SHIFTED BACK TO PRIMARY COLOURS & MINIMAL DISTRACTING PATTERNS, BUT THERE’S

THE shirt

JUST SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THOSE KITS EVERYONE CALLS UGLY. THING IS, EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT DENY IT, THEY’RE JUST BLOODY MARVELLOUS. Before the colours though, GOALKEEPERS LIKE LEV YASHIN AND DINO ZOFF HAD gone minimal for THEIR VERY OWN ICONIC KITS. YASHIN WAS NICKNAMED THE BLACK SPIDER BECAUSE OF HIS ALL BLACK GARB, COMPLETED BY A FLAT CAP IN SOME GAMES. ZOFF on the other hand added a bit more colour, with a his grey shirt propped up by a blue collar and cuffs, complete with black shorts and blue socks. The style is so synonymous with zoff that it is as Italian as pizza.

Jorge

an abnormal goalkeeper by any account, jorge campos made it his mission to stand out. fondly remembered for looking like an explosion at a fireworks factory when in goal, the diminuitive mexican actually started his footballing career as a striker and would occassionally play as a keeper and forward in the same match during his 16 year career. this 5 foot 6, larger than life figure designed his own shirts, with a geometric and colourful style that would be his until his reitrement in 2004.

but his shirts weren’t his only reason for standing out. As effective a sweeperkeeper as there has ever been, campos was a master at organizing his defense and rushing out of his line to intercept an attack. sometimes he’d even start an attack right there, running up the pitch with ball to feet. with quick feet and a low centre of gravity, he was a slippery outfield player. Wearing what he was wearing, you couldn’t miss him. THE BYLINE

THE SOBER EFFORTS OF THE TRADITIONAL GOALKEEPER’S KIT WERE being PHASED OUT BY THE VERY LATE 80S, AND WITH THE START OF THE 90S IT BECAME THE STYLE of the time. SOME OF THESE KITS MIGHT MAKE ‘UGLIEST FOOTBALL SHIRTS EVER’ LISTS BUT HERE WE SHOW THEM LOVE, starting with this purple, green and pink effort by chelsea’s Dmitri Kharine.

1990s: colourful

the every colour available fad wasn’t a europe-only thing, as boca juniors’ keeper carlos navarro montoya illustrates here. this shirts’ base colour is white, with plentiful splashes of colour on the sleeves and shorts coupled with an illustration of navarro montoya at the wheel of a truck in a rage.

WENGER

OUT:

In 2004, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side finished the 2003-04 season unbeaten, earning them the Premier League title & the moniker ‘The Invincibles’.

THE BYLINE

24

Fast forward 10 years, and after a period of stagnation and tightening of the purse-strings the fans began to lash out at the clubs owners and at Arsene himself.

A

STORY

The opposition towards the manager was scolded by the majority of Arsenal fans, who backed Arsene through thick and thin.

THE BYLINE

The ferociously vocal few however insisted on pursuing Wenger’s head when frustrated, and the visual outlet these few had magnified their fingerpoinitng at Arsene Wenger.

25

While some fans inferred vociferously that Arsene Wenger’s future lay away from the club, most fans stayed in their majority on Wenger’s side of the dispute.

THE BYLINE

26

The lack of progression in the domestic league and European competition coupled with their bitter rivals (Tottenham Hotspur) emergence as the better team in North London saw fans start to lose their patience with Arsene. At first polite, the banners became much more succinct: they simply said ‘Wenger Out’.

Even though the Gunners hadn’t come close to winning the Premier League again for the better part of a decade, the club continued collecting silverware under Wenger’s leadership, amassing 3 FA Cups in 4 seasons.

THE BYLINE

Arsenal’s FA Cup dominance brought some fans back to favour Arsene,. The question asked to Arsenal fans was always the same: Wenger Out or Wenger In? ‘Wenger In’ stayed as the majority.

27

After news of a new two-year contract on the table for Arsene, the Wenger Out camp emboldened their manifestations, even flying a plane over The Hawthorns Stadium during a match against West Brom, in Birmingham.

THE BYLINE

28

Criticisms of Wenger’s tactical decisions and man management had many Arsenal fans feeling enough was enough. They stopped asking for Wenger to step down and started to demand he be removed of his charge.

A viral campaign saw Wenger Out signs pop up all around the World; at Wrestlemania in the USA, at a Coldplay concert in Singapore, at a rally against Jacob Zuma in South Africa and at a protest for Lebanese engineers in Beyrout, Lebanon. The worldwide fan-base of Arsenal called for change.

THE BYLINE

The fans got their wish: the board ordered Wenger to step down, on his terms. After 22 years his reign came to end, and he had become Arsenal’s most decorated manager. The fans, even after all the frustration and angry ‘Wenger Out’ calls, saluted Arsene, and the 68 year-old leaves the club with his head held high.

Bearing in mind that the graphics have aged terribly BUT WERE THE BEST FOR THE TIME, the gameplay is still extremely enjoyable and a joy to play with, & the introduction of the master league

gameplay mode meant this was a game you could play for hours, again & again, until the tips of your fingers were as worn as jimi hendrix’s after he guitar soloed so hard he STARTED to involve his teeth. THE GAME SPAWNED A SERIES OF SEQUELS OVER DIFFERENT GAMES CONSOLES, EVOLVING INTO THE PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER SERIES OF TODAY.
