Carlton Connect: The Epicentre of Australian Innovation
Carlton Connect: Together we can innovate and prosper.
Carlton Connect is an ambitious strategy to unite the smartest people who share a desire to tackle some of our biggest challenges and a passion to design new ideas and technologies to help secure Australia’s sustainability and prosperity.
Carlton Connect will be the country’s leading campus-centered, multi-disciplinary innovation hub where industry, government and academia collaborate on the big challenges associated with sustainability and resilience, including:
Managing natural disasters such as bushfires
Developing sustainable future urban environments
Capturing and optimising the capacities and opportunities offered by ICT
Identifying new ways to enhance food supply chains
Adapting to a changing climate
Ensuring productive use of scarce water resources
Managing the transition to sustainable, alternative energy systems
Fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship
Maintaining and enhancing social equity
Finding new ways to tackle, manage, mitigate or even solve these challenges represents an enormous new market opportunity for all related industries. Carlton Connect will link academic, government & community and industry partners to innovate and generate value as they pursue solutions to these big challenges.
Our motivation is to tackle the big challenges
As academics we are naturally curious. We seek to provide leadership that continually pushes the boundaries of knowledge. We are driven by a ferocious passion to discover and innovate. We seek to widely collate and forensically examine complex datasets so we can provide the insight that can drive improved outcomes; be they for industry, government policy makers or community-based, not-for-profit groups. But we know we can’t achieve our goals alone – we will need partners who bring complementary skills and capabilities to make lasting changes. We invite you to join us on this journey.
As academics we are naturally curious.
Strong Partner Foundations
As Australia’s best University, Melbourne is strongly positioned to lead the pursuit, particularly when you acknowledge our research capabilities and realise that we: • Employ over 3,000 world-class academics working on research projects valued at around AUD $840 million; • Are trusted with the most research funding of any University in Australia: AUD $377 million in 2011; • Educate and inspire the largest cohort of PhD students and more international students than any other Australian University.
IBM is one of the world’s largest and most successful information computing technology companies. In 2011, IBM’s worldwide operations generated nearly USD $107 billion in revenue, employed over 426,751 people and it invested USD $6 billion into cross-sectoral research. Since 2008, IBM has been committed to building ‘a smarter planet’ based on its learning that “our companies, our cities and our world are complex systems indeed, systems of systems. Advancing these systems to be more instrumented, intelligent and interconnected requires a profound shift in management and governance toward far more collaborative approaches.
No matter where discovery takes place, IBM Researchers push the boundaries of science, technology and business to make the world work better. Our global network of scientists work on a range of applied and exploratory research projects to help clients, governments and universities apply scientific breakthroughs to solve real-world business and societal challenges.”
IBM is a proud partner of the University of Melbourne in the Carlton Connect initiative and is committed to maximising the impact of its newly-established Australian Global Research & Development Laboratory.

Our Macroeconomic Capabilities
• Australia’s information technology industry has been ranked as the most competitive in the Asia-Pacific region by the Economist Intelligence Unit, and the same report found that Melbourne had the highest proportion of skilled ICT worked in Australia. In the five years to 2010, Australia’s ICT industry growth rate exceeded that of the US, UK, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. • The ICT industry in Victoria employs over 140,000 people and has revenues of $29 billion, which accounts for 31 per cent of the national total. The industry is also investing aggressively in innovation, with average investment in Research and development of 17 per cent of gross revenue. • In the key industries that will be the focus of Carlton Connect, Victoria is among world leaders: – V ictoria’s energy market is heavily deregulated, and includes one of the world’s most competitive retail electricity markets
– V ictoria’s food exports are valued at $5.8 billion annually – V ictoria accounts for the single largest share of mains water use in Australia including distributed water use by the agricultural and manufacturing industries. It also accounts for nearly 30 per cent of Australia’s rural water output. This has resulted in significant investment to improve water infrastructure within the State, almost $4.9 billion since 2007. Given the relative size and investment base in the water sector in Victoria, it is primed to lead further innovation in improving water productivity across the urban and rural divide. Victoria has a strong track record of leading large scale water innovation projects such as the Northern Victoria Irrigation Renewal Project. This experience of successfully executing large scale innovation projects makes Victoria an ideal candidate for leading the national water innovation agenda.
• Melbourne is: – a knowledge, manufacturing and innovation capital with an economy larger than Singapore’s – home to several multinational ICT companies, including IBM, NEC, HP, Infosys, Ericsson, Huawei, Cisco, Microsoft and Fujitsu, and the home of the operations hub of the National Broadband Network
Located in the world’s most liveable city
Carlton Connect is headquartered in the cosmopolitan inner-Melbourne suburb of Carlton, immediately to the north of the city’s Central Business District. Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city. It is the capital city of the State of Victoria in Australia and it is known for its energy, sophistication and innovation. It has a strong history of investing in the Arts and is known for its cultural diversity. The city is easy to navigate using efficient public transport options like trams, buses and trains. It has excellent social and educational infrastructure, exceptional sporting events and arenas and a thriving restaurant and café culture.
