First Wave Feminism: 1850’s to 1960

Seneca Falls Convention The First Wave of Feminism began in 1848 with the firstwomen’s rights convention in New York. The basis of this meeting was to create a strategy to claim equality for women

Demanding the right to vote!

Annie Oakley, born Phoebe Ann Moses in 1860 was known for her sharp shooting skills. At age 26, she became the star of the Buffalo Bill Wild West show in 1885. Oakley is known for being able to hit moving targets while riding a horse, from a playing card, coins, and she was even known to regularly shoot a cigarette out of her husband’s lips.

In 1897, the first triple somersault on a flying trapeze by a female or male was completed by Lena Jordan. It wasn’t until twelve years later that a man was able to complete the same trick. Female students were not able to try the trick because it was thought to be too dangerous for women, so her accomplishments were not recognized until many years later.

Alice Coachman made history becoming the first African American to be on the US All-American Track and Field team member. In 1948, she was the first woman of color to win an Olympic gold medal for high jump.

In 1960, the first person to win 3 gold medals for track and field in a single Olympic Games was Wilma Rudoph. She won the gold in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and 400 meter relay.

Mickey Wright won the LPGA championship the first year that it was televised in 1963. In the same year, she was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the year for her golf accomplishments, and went on to win the award another time in 1964.

In 1972, Billie Jean King was the first woman to ever recieve the Sportswoman of the Year by Sports Illustrated. That same year, King fought for equal prize money for men and women in the U.S. Open, which is also the same year that congress passed Title IX.

At 26 years old, Danica Patrick became the first female majorleague Indy-car event winner at the Indy Japan 300. This is also the first national oval-track touring circuit win by a female driver.

While the US Women’s national Soccer team lost to Japan in the finals of the 2011 World Cup, Abby Wambach had one of the most memorable headers to beat Brazil in the quarterfinals. In 2011, Wambach also was named the Associated Press Athete of the Year.

The Fierce Five is comprised of Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber, making up the US Women’s Olympic team. In the 2012 Summer Olympics, they became the second US team in Olympic history to win a team gold medal. While they all earned individual medals, Gaby Douglas became the first African American to win a gold in the all-around gymnastics finals. Douglas also was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the year in 2012. “I myself have never been able to find out percisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a door mat or a prostitute.” - Rebecca West

In the 2014 Little League World Series, Mo’ne Davis blew people away with her 70 mile per hour fast ball. She pitched a win and a shutout, making her the first female in Little League World Series to do so. She is the first African American girl to play in the games, as well as the first little league baseball player to make the front cover of Sports Illustrated.
