How’s the Market? In follow up to “How’s the snow?”, this is often the next question we are asked as friends and clients roll into town for the holidays. The answer? Impressive! Highlights from the Town of Vail… as of mid-December, sales volume is up $150,000,000 from 2013, transaction volume is up 9%, the average sale of $1.8M is up 33%, and our median sale is up almost 18%, to $860,000. Given how Vail typically sets the bar for the rest of the valley, I expect this activity to flow to other luxury niches such as Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead… a trend we are already beginning to witness. For more details, including a summary of notable sales, please see my Luxury Market Update at www.ledgardner.com. My personal thanks for this opportunty to be of service, and best wishes for a fun and memorable holiday season.

ith the dawning of the near year come cold days and snowy nights. It makes for a bevy of powder days on the ski mountain — and nobody’s complaining about that — but eventually we start to crave something other than that white, white landscape, beautiful though it is. We want color. Lots of it. Read our story on how to bring a little color into your home with a bold-yet-restrained hand. For those more interested in reveling in winter, check out our take on the ski-in/ski-out Game Creek Chalet. It’s a good test run for buying you own slope-side paradise. As has been the case in the past couple of months, properties are moving fast. It seems everybody wants to buy in Eagle County, and nobody wants to leave. Homes are spending fewer days on the market before selling, and asking prices are pretty strong. With inventory what it is, now is a good time to enlist the expert guidance of a REALTOR. Our organization, its members and partners exist to provide the most informed, ethical and comprehensive options for clients and their real estate needs for both primary and secondary residences.

s the authority in all trends colorrelated, Pantone has named Marsala the color of the year for 2015. “This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Nurturing and fulfilling, Marsala is a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room — making it ideal for tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home.” It can certainly be seen in our valley, from walls to lamps to furniture.

irst comes the feeling ;

then comes the reality. Sculptor Gail Folwell is known for her largerthan-life bronzes, pieces that express with wild fluidity a moment, a passion, a life. A life dedicated to sweat and speed, or to love and longing. Her work, “The Edge,” inspired by Bode Miller and a testament to all of the skiers and snowboarders who have represented Vail in competitions around the globe, can be seen at Vail’s Mountain Plaza. In it, a ski racer careens on the very edge, slicing into a turn and seemingly quivering with action. It’s a familiar concept for the Boulder artist, that capturing of a moment that pulsates with life. Known for sports-themed sculptures, any authentic moment in the human experience seems to appeal to her. The Denver Art Museum acquired “Tete a Tete,” two figures engaged in conversation — or studying the world around them, depending on how they’re set up.

Though it’s the big public pieces that get most of the press, her smaller sculptures have the same spirit. Represented by Claggett/Rey Gallery in Vail, her figurative work demonstrates a wide range of human experience, be it a biker bearing down and grinding on, or the unconditional love between a homely woman and her dog. Dreams of flying, an adult snowball fight, the release of the soul after death, posting up for the shot — her subject matter is connected only, but inextricably, by its humanness. 22

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

Married to an architect, Folwell has launched a line of sculpture that’s designed just for homes — and we’re not talking a piece in the corner. Handle the Art is sculptural hardware: drawer pulls, door handles, cabinet embellishments. “There are many reasons that I love this idea,” says Folwell. “Good design is visually pleasing. Good art makes conceptual connections with people. Best of both worlds: utilitarian art, cabinet hardware. We touch our cabinet pulls every day.

Sculpture is so tactile, and we’re taught not to touch the art. That’s crazy. Sculptural forms are wonderful to the touch.” And her art, in particular, beckons. Everyone wants to touch the human experience; everybody wants to get closer. This is not sentimental styling, but something pure — sometimes raw, sometimes euphoric, always smacking of authenticity. “Art is a luxury purchase,” Folwell explains. “Its only job is to make you feel whatever it is that it makes you feel. It’s not an

easy purchase to validate when you need a couch. Generally, only seasoned art collectors who’ve filled the walls consider collecting sculpture. But it’s wonderful to live with, and often, having a piece that is dear to you comes with a sense of pride. Everyone has cabinet hardware. This gives anyone a good excuse to be an art collector.” For information on her home hardware visit handletheart. com; for information on the artist and her sculptures visit claggettrey.com.

CREATING LIVE DESIGNS Succulents offer a colorful world of possibilities for the winter months — and beyond by MARTY JONES

Succulents are easy to mix and match for intricate designs.

24

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

THE JOY OF SUCCULENTS Succulent plants, or succulents, are plants that grow well in dry environments and have thickened or fleshy leaves and stems caused by their capacity to store water efficiently. Cacti are classified as succulents, but succulents exist in varieties that extend far beyond traditional cactus plants. Succulents range in appearance from having juicy-looking blue-green leaves to those that have green and white candy cane-like stripes. They can be column shaped, round, ruffled,

or spiked, but no matter what form they take, their appearance is guaranteed to garner interest. Succulents are a great choice for plant designs because they often have interesting textures and can be planted creatively for stunning live results. Plus, succulents are often small, which makes them easy to arrange in containers that can be placed vertically on walls or horizontally on tables as centerpieces. The small size of succulents also makes them attractive to children, who love picking them out and planting them, so if you’re looking for an activity that will

be fun for kids, involve them in your succulent design process.

DESIGNING WITH SUCCULENTS To create a succulent plant design, begin by gathering the essentials: soil, plants and a container. Succulents grow best in well-drained soil, so purchase a rocky planting medium specifically mixed for succulents and cacti. Next, develop a design concept. Perhaps you would like to display a single, standout plant in a clear glass container that reveals different rock layers.

hen it’s cold and snowy outside, get your creative juices flowing indoors by decorating with live plants. Even though winter’s not the time for outdoor gardening and landscaping, you still have plenty of opportunities to work with plants in unique ways to enhance your home’s interior décor. And with a recent surge of interest in succulent plant design, this winter is the perfect time to create an exciting live conversation piece that can add character to any well-lit room in your home.

Or perhaps you’d like to plant a variety of succulents in a circle- or square-shaped planter that can serve as a centerpiece. Plants can be arranged in rows of similar varieties to create stripes of color and texture, or they can be arranged randomly as an eclectic mix. Add interest pieces to succulent planters such as bark, driftwood, or river rocks of various sizes to accentuate the design. Succulent designs can become even more attractive when planted in creative containers, such as vertical wall planters, hanging globeshaped glass planters, or repurposed Mason jars, which

martini glasses of any style for someone who wants a cocktail served ‘up,’ and a couple of fun, random cocktail glasses for those great dinner/ cocktail parties,” he explains. Glassware is all personal preference and style, he adds. For Sornig, he says he likes a mix of cheap, expensive and vintage cocktail glassware. He recommends Libbey Glass as a brand for stylish and reasonably-priced glassware.

“I work behind a bar, and cocktails and spirits are my passion,” explains Sornig. “I did not acquire all of these spirits in one swoop — this is a bar that I have built over time. To be real, one bottle of vodka, whiskey, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth and some bitters will take you a really long way.”

Leopold Brothers Absinthe A Denver-based company that does a great job with every product in their line up. • Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth This is a bar staple. • Dolin Dry Vermouth Also a bar staple. • Benedictine You can’t go wrong with havinga small bottle of this in the house. • Angostura Bitters Must have. • Peychauds Bitters Must have. • Regans Orange Bitters Must have. • Fernet Branca An industry favorite. • Mezcal Vago Tobola A really great bottle of Mezcal.

“There is always room for a nice bottle of bourbon, or two or three,” Sornig adds. For mixers, Sornig suggests Fever Tree. He says they product a fantastic tonic water and ginger beer that are real “game changers.” For fruit, it’s always good to have some fresh lime, lemon and orange handy when making cocktails. “As far as the products you are going to use, the spices, herbs and even the fresh fruit, use local as much as possible,” says Ballesteros. “It always makes a difference, just like in a kitchen. It’s always about the quality, not the quantity.”

into President Gerald Ford’s former home, one of the first things they see is the 18inch, granite presidential seal engraved into the limestone hallway floor. Oddly enough, it wasn’t always there; Kevin Hayes, president of West Point Investment Corporation, installed it during his approximately $4 million renovation, when he purchased the home in early 2007, after Ford’s death.

“The president would never do that; he was just too humble,” Hayes says. But Hayes wanted to honor Ford. “When you walk in and see the presidential seal, it’s a wow moment. You realize who used to live here.” Ford and his wife last visited their Beaver Creek home, which they built in 1983, in July 2006. explains. The combination of Ford’s heart condition and the high elevation caused him to leave abruptly and check into the Mayo Clinic, where he received a stint; after that, the Fords decided to sell. They listed it December 22, and Hayes had it under contract by 3 p.m. December 26; the president died two hours later. Though that year the Vail Valley lost what Beth Slifer, of Slifer Designs, calls the valley’s No. 1 citizens and “our First Family,” their home at 65 Elk Track Court still remains for anyone to shortterm rent through Triumph Mountain Properties. Hayes transformed the once

separate-entrance apartment where secret service officials, as well as the president’s and first lady’s secretaries stayed, into a billiard and game room. Visible from the Strawberry Park chair lift, it now houses one of Ford’s blue ski jackets and a pair of his K2 skis. People could always tell when the president was in Beaver Creek because the secret service’s black automobiles, with their embedded police lights in the grills, always backed into the driveway for a quick escape. Before Hayes purchased the home, rumors spread about the freestanding structure in the back of the home; people said that’s where the secret

The kitchen has been completely renovated to reflect contemporary tastes.

VAIL PROPERTY service stayed, walking to and from the main home through tunnels. As it turns out, there are no tunnels, and the separate structure houses Ford’s lap pool, where he unfailingly swam twice a day, while Betty rode her stationary bike, located next to the pool. Though Hayes updated the home extensively, he preserved certain items. The Fords owned two dining room tables — a small one for the two of them, and a larger one for entertaining. Hayes refinished the larger one, which hosted distinguished guests such as Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush, Vice President Quayle, and Henry Kissinger,

and it now sits in the kitchen. But perhaps the most notable historical part of the home hides under a rug in Ford’s original office. Hayes placed a desk where Ford sat at his own desk (most of Ford’s furniture was auctioned off when he died, to support the Vail Valley Foundation) in a small atrium just off a large, opulent office. Hayes replaced the flooring but preserved a 3 by 5-foot area of the original, tan, 12” by 12” ceramic tile, which bears the marks of Ford’s chair, where he rocked back and forth and scored the tile. “It’s like a mini-museum,” Hayes says, “with a great family vacation component to it.”

The interior design team from Slifer Designs was brought in to lighten up the space and make it more inviting for kids and for entertaining friends. “They are a couple in their 30s with kids, and they’re very active,” explains lead designer Yvonne Jacobs, president of Slifer

Designs and lead designer for this project. “The house was very dark and just had a heavy feel to it. They wanted to bring in lots of light and have it be young and family friendly, with more of a casual, comfortable feel.”

REDECORATE AND REMODEL

Jacobs, with designers Tessa Hyatt and Kelsey Cole, started with a furniture makeover. “The previous owners had a

very formal setting in the living room with two sofas and two chairs, and we went with one big, huge sectional, with little drink tables around it, a big coffee table, and big, comfy chairs and pillow,” explains Jacobs. There was no structural work done, at first, just new furniture, lighter paint and bright art in the living areas and master bedroom. “In the master, we took the heavy drapery off and made it more light in there, and we

redid the plants so you notice them more,” she explains. The process was backwards, since the redecorating came first, followed by a remodel. Jacobs says once the owners saw how much the furniture, paint and art brightened up the living room, dining room and master bedroom, the bathrooms and kitchen had to get a new look, too. The team used Genesis, a cabinet company out of Denver, to outline the kitchen, and they also

put in a new appliance package. “We went with more of a modern, clean look,” says Jacobs, “but we made it fit within the architecture.” In the bathrooms, the very dark green marble was replaced to create the same light-infused look. In the master bathroom, a Koehler tub and Koehler fixtures complement the limestone on the floor and wall, keeping the space very neutral and inviting. The wood floor tile in the other

Jacobs says the family liked the transformation so much that they flew the design team to their home in Lubbock, Texas to work on their home there. “I think the signature touch was bringing it to a younger appeal,” she says. “It’s so cozy, so comfortable and unpretentious, and it fits the family’s needs so well.”

DOWNVALLEY Q&A

SEVEN QUESTIONS WITH

Juniper Restaurant’s Doug Abel by WREN BOVA • photos by CHARLES TOWNSEND BESSENT

opened Juniper Restaurant in Edwards a dozen years ago, his mission was clear: He wanted a downvalley Sweet Basil experience. By all counts, the restaurant has been a roaring success, not least of all because it delivers its own experience, tucked into Riverwalk with creek-side views. We caught up with Abel and asked him about life as a business owner in Edwards.

vail valley home : What do you attribute your longevity to? doug abel : Juniper has been open for 12-plus years; we are in our 13th ski season. I think we found an area of need in a growing area in Edwards and our timing was right!

vvh : Why did you choose Edwards? da : I wanted to be downvalley to take advantage of the growing community and potential for more year-round business. With Cordillera growing, Red Sky Ranch, Eagle Springs, et cetera, downvalley seemed perfect. Also, rents were much, much lower.

What do you like about being located in Riverwalk? da : I love Riverwalk. It’s a great little neighborhood. There’s always something going on. It’s a great mix of shops, restaurants, a movie theater and more. vvh :

Who makes up your client base? da : I’d say our clientele is about 65 percent/35 percent full time/ part time residents. That changes with the seasons. The 65/35 is winter and probably goes to more than 70/30 in summer. We get a lot of second homeowners in the summertime who are here for the golf and everything else and they stay longer. Our winter guests are here for vacations and come from Vail and Beaver Creek — probably more from Beaver Creek. vvh :

If you have any free time, how do you spend it? da : My free time is spent either snowshoeing with my two black labs or on the mountain snowboarding. In the summer I can be found on the golf course at Cordillera or on my bike. I also find time to hike with my dogs every day. That’s the beauty of only being open for dinner — it vvh :

Douglas Abel, owner, and John Dooley, general manager.

42

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

allows my staff and I to do what we love during the day. It’s the reason we all moved here: to be outside and take advantage of our beautiful valley! Any dishes that you can’t take off the menu? da : Yes, we cannot take the veal scaloppini off. It’s been on the menu since the beginning and in its current form/ presentation for about 8 years. vvh :

Any recommendations for a Juniper first-time visitor? da : Obviously I think our veal is not to be missed. I love our tuna poke and beef tartare appetizers. In the summer, our halibut entree is my favorite. Our bar manager, Dougie Russell, is always changing the drink menu, but I love our Winter Heat tequila cocktail in the winter and our Tomato Caprese Martini in the summer. vvh :

or board at your own back door and skiing away is one of the most coveted experiences available in the Vail Valley. The treasured ski-in/ ski-out convenience has always been precious because of its scarcity, and with some mountainside prices exceeding $2,000 per square foot there actually is a price on this “priceless” position.

48

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

The enviable ski-in/ski-out residences line the mountain in Vail, Bachelor Gulch, Arrowhead and Beaver Creek but because approximately 80 to 85 percent of the mountain is government land privately held, buildable property is scarce. Yet with the expansion of ski lifts, ski bridges and properties built in close proximity to a ski lift, the term ski-in/

ski-out seems to have been somewhat broadened. “Today’s technology has made property that wouldn’t be considered convenient (to the ski slope) much more convenient,” says Jim McVey of Slifer Smith & Frampton. “Communities of condos and skier bridges can make a loose interpretation of ski-in/ski-out available at more affordable prices where you can

actually ski from your property to the lift. Obviously it’s more glamorous and convenient to ski right up to your own patio but the fortunate part is that today there are other options.” The Avon Riverfront Express Gondola #7 that originates at the Westin Hotel in Avon affords residents and guests a direct connection to Beaver Creek Mountain. The same situation is available in the Cascade Village area west of Lionshead where the onsite Chair 20 chairlift avails the areas residents and guests with immediate access to the ski mountain. In both Vail and Beaver Creek a privileged few homes reside directly on the mountain, however, according to Cathy Jones-Coburn, Slifer Smith & Frampton, Bachelor Gulch consists of the only true skiin/ski-out “community” in the valley. “Bachelor Gulch, more than any other place, is a community where all residents

are actually living on the mountain and approximately 80 percent of the residences enjoy a true ski-in/ski-out situation.” And unlike other local mountain land, all of the property in Bachelor Gulch is private, not U.S. Forest land. Bachelor Gulch boasts its own chairlift, as does the Arrowhead area, and along with Beaver Creek creates the village-tovillage ski network connecting all three of the villages. The opening of this unique villageto-village connection in 1996 provided access to 1,625 skiable acres as well as making all three of the distinctive villages available to skiers. Arrowhead area’s 180 acres of skiable terrain, ski-in/ski-out property became even more valuable. “Arrowhead is now the western entrance to the second largest ski mountain in the country,” says Kathy Iverson of Slifer Smith & Frampton. Approximately 35 ski-in/skiout residences are on mountain estate lots and approximately 120 residences are connected via heated walkway directly to the lift making a walk to the lift less than a minute. “With the ski lift, the golf course and other amenities here, we feel this is a resort within a resort.” In many areas, such as Arrowhead, where there is no more development, ski properties become even more valuable. McVey describes a ski-slope property purchased for $8 million in Vail only to be torn down; an indication of the value of land in prime locations. Prime locations around the world have always commanded the most fervent attention; oceanfront, lakefront or riverside property is so precious because it’s rare — you simply can’t create more. McCoy Creek, within the community of Arrowhead, resides this newly constructed, one-of-a-kind custom home at 14 Cabin Creek Lane; boasting unsurpassed charm and luxury in a community known for its beauty and location. This consummate mountain home in the woods, with the waters of McCoy Creek flowing past, provides exquisite spacious open living areas that

are beautifully proportioned to ensure comfort and a flowing floor plan that brings family and friends together. The attention to detail is unparalleled as high-end designer details pervade every inch of this custom home. Such features as impressive floor to ceiling dry-stack fireplaces, plank log ceilings, white oak wide-planked wood floors, vaulted ceilings and extensive outdoor living space overlooking McCoy Creek only

begin to relay the splendor of this home’s finer points. The main level master suite boasts a private sandstone patio overlooking the creek, drystack fireplace, palatial master bathroom and walk-in closet. Five additional spacious bedrooms, including a secondary master suite that also overlooks the creek, are accompanied by a comfortable den/family room with its own fireplace. Tucked away along the banks of

McCoy Creek, Mother Nature’s surrounding beauty cannot be overlooked or overstated. Surrounded by open space, 14 Cabin Creek Lane enjoys the privilege of privacy with a lush forest view. An active outdoors life is as close as your front door with access to summer hiking or winter snowshoeing on Arrowhead Mountain. And the convenience of Dial-a-Ride will whisk you to the ski lift or another destination of your choosing.

Another interesting feature of the McCoy Creek subdivision is a trailhead that allows for hikes to the top of Arrowhead or Bachelor Gulch. This is a trail, albeit out of bounds, that allows one to ski directly to homes in the area. Residing within Arrowhead itself, this self-purported resort community within a resort community, is in a unique location within the Vail Valley. Located just minutes between the expansive amenities, shops and services of Avon and Edwards makes this a very exceptional living experience; to live in a private, mountain setting that has the convenience of quick, easy access to “town”

is a lifestyle available to only a few. And while there is skiing within the Arrowhead area, the ArrowBahn ski lift connects skiers to the village-to-village ski connection, opened in 1996, linking Arrowhead Mountain with Beaver Creek Village and Bachelor Gulch, creating access to 1,625 skiable acres at the second largest ski mountain in the country. MARKET REPORT

BY THE NUMBERS

A Healthy New Year New inventory keeps coming to market, but is quickly bought

T

New Year is always exciting and welcome — out with the old, in with the new. Starting fresh, with optimism and resolve. This year is going to be different. Well, that sounds about right actually with regard to 2015. The year 2014 proved, for the most part, to gain strength slowly and steadily throughout the year. Despite a continued lack of inventory, the market behaved much the way it should with growing vigor — setting us up nicely for the year to come. In fact, we are rolling into 2015 with quite a healthy real estate market here in the Vail Valley. he energy of a

58

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

The numbers have been steady, the interest rate has held ground with virtually no inflation and construction is back in full swing. How long will the interest rates hold? That’s a tough one to predict, but we have other indicators of a strong economy in Colorado including our ever-decreasing unemployment rate with high quality jobs that support housing demand. All in all, we have a very positive outlook for the New Year that strengthens our resolve to maintain and improve the exceptional lifestyle offered to those who choose to live here.

This time last year For this article we are reviewing the numbers from November. And suffice it to say, the numbers were up across the board over November of 2013. New listings, pending sales and closed sales were all in the positive for both the Townhouse-Condo and Single Family/Duplex markets. Other exciting numbers include a significant drop in days on the market. This explains why there seems to be no inventory! For example, let’s take a closer look at Townhouse-Condo activity. The numbers show a 20.8 percent increase in new listings over last

November’s numbers. While the days on the market show a decrease of 26.8 percent over the same time last year. Combine those statistics with a 27.6 percent rise in pending sales and a 7.1 percent increase in closings and you have a healthy market. Appropriately priced properties are coming on and going off quickly. The Single Family/Duplex market shows similar activity over last November. A 15 percent increase in listings, a 2.8 percent increase in pending sales and a five percent increase in closings. Add in a 30.9 percent drop in days on the market and again vigorous activity.

The best is yet to come. According to Corey Lamothe, Vail Board of REALTORS® board member, “Traditionally we see an increase in our inventory from the first to the second quarter and I expect this year to be the same. With that increase in inventory and the exciting new improvements in our different communities, the Vail Valley lifestyle is thriving. Historically tourism fueled the market, but more and more families are coming to the valley to live full time and take advantage of this active community. “Recently, new clients have come to me asking, ‘When is the best time to sell?’ In the past my answer may have been different, but in today’s healthy market, anytime is good. If you are ready to make a change, have analyzed the comparable sales in your neighborhood and have a trusted REALTOR® representing you, then it’s a good time to sell. Buyers start their search online and are looking year-round, we are no longer limited by the seasonal fluctuation of the valley,” says Lamothe. “My focus is on the future, the statistics and a sound market. All these things add up to the overall wellness in our community and I couldn’t be more excited going into 2015.” Build it and they will come Although we saw a rise in inventory for both market segments, you can ask any REALTOR® around and they will say inventory is low. Even though November was up, in general, it is lower than previous years. Buyers are ready to make their move in the Vail Valley yet

inventory is frustrating to say the least. When this happens, there’s another breed that seizes this opportunity to benefit all—real estate developers. Construction permits are up particularly in towns farther west of the resorts. Scott Marino, Vail Board of REALTORS® board member works within the markets of Eagle and Gypsum and he doesn’t necessarily agree with the numbers as they relate to his market. Inventory is extremely low particularly in the Townhouse-Condo market. In turn, construction is up. According to Marino, “While the Single Family market has a decent amount of inventory, the condo, townhome, duplex units are moving quickly. Almost all of the townhomes on the market in Eagle right now are new construction. They are selling as fast as they can be built. In fact, all of the current active listings are under construction. Additionally, in Gypsum, there is a new development of duplexes going up called ‘Hawks Nest’. Of the four completed, two are already under contract.” In a nutshell, the Vail Valley real estate market is looking really good going into 2015 and we couldn’t be more thankful here at the Vail Board of REALTORS®. We are excited about the future, the opportunities for growth and the health of our mountain communities. If you are looking to buy or sell here in the Vail Valley, as always, we recommend enlisting the expertise of a professional REALTOR® in this dynamic and unique resort market.

on his phone to close up his office in Edwards for the night. With a press of a button, he has armed the alarm system, turned off every TV and every speaker,

put the lights in “away” mode, lowered the shades and shut off the fireplace. Raife pulls into his driveway, reaches for his phone and opens the app again. With another act of touchscreen magic, he can see the lights illuminate from inside his home. Music turns on as well, which he’ll soon hear when he enters. He can activate temperature control or switch to a television show from the palm of his hand, all before he has unloaded the groceries. Well, maybe there’s an app for that too.

Raife is a founder and principle at VIA International. The company is the largest home technology integration firm in the Untied States, and their locations in the Vail Valley and beyond have introduced the idea of bringing a “digital concierge” into homes. “What’s trending in home designs in anything tech,” shares Erik Sale, a Vail-based technology advisor for VIA. “Whether it’s streaming music out by the barbecue, motorized shades for energy efficiency or 4k [resolution] video distributed throughout a home and private theater, people are using technology in fun, simple ways like never before.” Sale says the “timing is perfect”

to invest in tech advances for the home. It’s essential, he explains, for new homes and spec homes to have at least some technology that enhances how people live in them. “In Vail, or anywhere for that matter, technology integrated in the home is where the market is going with velocity,” he says. VIA turns the puzzle pieces of modern technological capabilities into an efficient platform to harness all things electronic — a home’s lights, temperature, security, audio and more. “We are a service-based company, with everything from design services for an architect to project management services for a builder,” Raife explains. “But we are all about client service — basically desktop support for your home.”

Electronic integration projects are divided into their tiers at VIA, each representing a price range and system dynamic. The first tier is an appbased approach, which focuses on simplicity. Apps on your smart phone or tablet are connected to home technology controls, including music selections, temperature control, lighting adjustments, TV channel changes and more. “It’s a pretty simple approach and very cost effective,” Raife says, “and it’s still really fun and easy to use.” This style of project generally starts at around $10,000 (depending on the size of the home and integrated system), and Raife explains how the higher end of this tier can be an investment of up to $250,000. The next level, known simply as an integrated system, uses a main control system and the Savant application in docks embedded throughout the home, or portable tablets like iPads. Once the systems are integrated to control a home’s climate, lighting, entertainment and security systems, for example, there are scenes that users can set to be revisited. Set a “post-work winter” scene to turn on soft lighting, fireplaces and piano serenades through an entire home or just in the living room. Then, you can save the scene, and name it too. “You can do all of this remotely or on site,” explains Raife. “So if you leave your house and you think you left a light on somewhere, you can go to the app and see the status.” This second-level system level generally costs between $75,000 to $500,000. Those who want to can take it another step up, which means the same integrated, one-app approach, but with more high-performance hardware. For $500,000 up to a seven figures, a home with the best of the best will have systems like 72

VAIL VALLEY HOME | JANUARY 2015

Steinway audio and a completely custom private home cinema, for example. This approach will still use a one-app control system, but just like taking out the stock parts of a car to replace them with higher-end parts, clients can outfit their home with the top tier of electronic products, and then control it all with the touch of a screen. “The guys on our staff bring every last bit of the system together,” he says. “They help clients figure out how the apps work to get the system to perform the way they want, and they help to set the programming for automated scenes, and help to set up movie and music libraries.” Since anything electronic seems to come with a level of error (or confusion), VIA’s “white glove service” is available 24 hours a day, so clients aren’t left in the dark. Raife calls VIA the “Ritz-Carlton of technology,” meant for new construction models and existing homes to find a little more luxury in their technology.

Control your home from afar via integrated apps for smartphones and tablets.

YOU CAN DO ALL OF THIS REMOTELY OR ON SITE. SO IF YOU LEAVE YOUR HOUSE AND YOU THINK YOU LEFT A LIGHT ON SOMEWHERE, YOU CAN GO TO THE APP AND SEE THE STATUS.”

Vibrant Hues The best ways to bring color into the home B Y K I M B E R LY N I C O L E T T I

T

HE REDS, GREENS, golds and glitter of the holidays are over, and you’re left with a steady diet of evergreen, blue sky and white to feast your eyes upon this winter. Granted, it’s beautiful outside, but sometimes, the senses just long for a bit more color to brighten short, cold days. “We spend so many months without color around us — seeing just whites and browns, no fresh, vibrant greens or yellows — that

we need to bring color inside,” says Elizabeth Basso, owner of Basso Interiors, Inc. in Eagle.

TEXTURE I T

Color brings a sense of warmth and coziness to the winter months, especially when it’s paired with texture. Though chenille has fallen out of fashion, mohair, wool, faux fur and velvet provide a nice depth and feel, and crushed velvet enhances reflected light, says Nancy Sanford, owner

of Nancy Sanford Interiors in Vail and Denver. Adding a throw rug under a coffee table or behind a sofa — even if it’s placed on top of a main carpet — can add a fun splash of color. Larger, shaggy runs are back in style again, too, and provide a colorful base under neutral furniture. Modern wallpaper offers a sense of texture, and some patterns come in “fun, shocking colors or look like a piece of artwork,” says Yvonne Jacobs, president

of Slifer Designs in Edwards. Of course, artwork is “huge for bringing color into a room,” Sanford says.

S I M P L E TO U CH ES

Window treatments also warm up a room with color and are easy to change out seasonally, if preferred. Other “easy fixes” come in the form of stylish lamps, drum chandeliers, classic ceramic accents, dining room placemats and napkins, coffee table books,

trays, picture frames, new bedding, plants and fresh flowers. “Fresh flowers just add a touch of the outside and fresh color,” Basso says. “They’re a wow factor that make a room pop.” Throw pillows are another popular option homeowners employ seasonally; pillows are low risk, easy, and a relatively inexpensive way to follow color trends.

Pantone’s color for 2015 is marsala, a rich, earthy red wine hue, meant to “enrich our minds, bodies and souls,” according to Pantone, a worldrenowned authority on color. Other trendy colors, besides the neutral greys which designers believe will hold on for years because they pair nicely with just about any color, include Room by Nancy Sanford Studio

oranges, reds, purples, aqua, and combinations like mushroom brown fused with coral or hot pink, says Dana Hugo, owner of j&o design studio in Avon. Green is on its way back in, too, especially in the form of a bright, fresh aspen green, replacing some of the blues, which “took over” for the past years. Still, jeweltone blue, with a tint of green, is now often paired with gold and brass (yes, brass is making a comeback), Jacobs says. Fortunately, home color trends enjoy a longer shelf life than in the fashion world, where they change seasonally. And, many mountain homeowners simply ignore the trends anyway, opting to surround themselves with their favorite color, whatever that may be. Still, mountain residents are straying from cool colors. “The whole palette is a lot

warmer now,” Jacobs says, explaining that there’s a “resurgence of entertaining at home, and you want colors to reflect the warmth you want to feel versus the show home (look).” In fact, when Jacobs asks clients what they desire in a home, the typical response is “warm and cozy,” she says. “They want to cocoon.”

C OLORI NG T EC H NI Q U E S

There are two main approaches to infuse color into a home: flooding a room with accent colors and painted walls, or adding subtle touches of color with perhaps pillows and a

Hugo says the safest way to play with color is: “Don’t overdo it. Use your color with things that can be replaced when you get tired of it or bored — not five big chairs or sofas in five shades of your favorite color.” That said, designers encourage homeowners to paint walls, because it can be a do-it-yourself project, and you can always paint over it in a year or so. Many homeowners choose to paint an accent wall or even a stripe or multiple stripes on a wall. In fact, some stripes only rise two-thirds of the way, to draw the eye upward. Ceilings are also a common element to paint in accent colors, which range from reds to teal blues.

BE A LITTLE BRAVER. IT’S PAINT; IT’S JUST COLOR. IT’S NOT GOING TO KILL YOU.” YVONNE JACOBS, SLIFER DESIGNS Tibetan rug, the latter of which Sanford loves, because they bring in natural, earthly colors through vegetable dyes, as opposed to “plastic colors,” she says. “They’re good for winter, because it’s subtle,” she says. “In winter, (bold) color can look cheap or funny because there’s not a lot of that type of energy. Winter is more slowed down, more grounded and earthy versus the longer days and excitement of summer.” She believes a subtle approach is the best way to incorporate color into mountain homes because “through subtleness, you actually get punch.” On the other hand, “bright, intense color can give you a burst of energy for the dull, gray winters,” says Vicki Glotzer, design director for Worth Home in Vail.

“Be a little braver,” Jacobs encourages homeowners. “It’s paint; it’s just color. It’s not going to kill you.” But since choosing the exact hue you want to live with can be tricky, she offers a couple tips. People can find the exact color they want on the wall in anything from a sweater to an advertisement, and then take it into a paint store to create the custom color. She then suggests buying a mini quart and painting a large piece of cardboard, which you can move around the house and view in different angles of light. Just as the holidays can bolster the spirit through joyful décor, infusing color into your home in the middle of winter can do wonders to lift spirits and complement nature’s snow-covered canvas.

aturally, the glade that sits on the east side of Game Creek Bowl has snow that’s either crunchy or soft, but we picked a good day to carve some smooth turns. The Ouzo slope was powder-

perfect on this crisp afternoon in February — our skis slicing right through the fallen flurries with rhythmic precision. Perfection, however, is to know that at the end of this slope are some of my favorite things: terrycloth slippers and an oversized robe; hot tub time surrounded by mountains and their alpine glow.

A TRIP TO THE TYROLEAN It was more than three decades after Vail opened when Pete Siebert, one of the ski area’s founders, envisioned bringing more European hospitality to the mountain, and in 1996 the Game Creek Chalet was built. The alpine cabin sits on the side of Game Creek Bowl at 10,300 feet, nestled in the trees and overlooking snowcapped peaks and sun-drenched landscape. “The Chalet is ideal for anybody who is looking to get all this scenery and to be further away from town,” says Logan Johnson, concierge for the Chalet. “It’s where people can actually feel like they are in the mountains the whole time they are in Vail.” Although the Chalet stands next to Game Creek’s wellknown on-mountain dining establishment, staying in to eat is what can truly create a cozy home away from home. A private chef is available for those looking to keep their dining 80

experience effortless and refined. “The sky is the limit when it comes to the menu,” Johnson says. “The chef allows you to really get a customized experience.” On this mid-February evening, chef Tyler Doyle prepares five courses as the afternoon hours fall into a vibrant sunset and quiet twilight, while we sink into the plush throw pillows and acoustic melodies in the Chalet’s high-beamed sitting room. Chalet-Style Dining King-sized beds are calling, but hors’ d’oeuvres of braised short ribs and polenta, chorizo-stuffed dates with prosciutto, fennel goat cheese tartlets and lobster guacamole tacos seem to speak a little louder than even the most tantalizing feather-down duvet. “Cooking up here really gives me time to go over the top on everything,” Doyle says amidst simultaneous course preparations of a winter salad, ahi sashimi appetizer, crab-crusted Dover Sole and fillet of beef

with truffle mashed potatoes. The pastry course finale offers its proper sweet ending as a chocolate hazelnut tartufi, served with toasted meringue and

caramelized bananas. Sugar plums danced in my head well before it hits the pillow, but everything melts into the sweetly serene as our night comes to a close.

An evening’s feast: filet of beef with truffle mashed potatoes, parsnips and brussel sprouts.

GAME CREEK RESTAURANT This on-mountain lodge, right next to the Game Creek Chalet, offers a nightly three-, four- or five-course prix-fix dinner menu. The cozy space overlooks the Game Creek bowl, and is accessed by ascending Vail Mountain on the Eagle Bahn Gondola, followed by a snowcat ride. THE 10TH RESTAURANT The 10th is a luxury mid-mountain stop for lunch or dinner, resting at the base of the Look Ma run at MidVail. Lunch guests can access the restaurant on foot or on skis from the top of Gondola One. For dinner, foot passenger traffic is free; for lunch, a scenic ride ticket is required. TRAPPER’S CABIN Trapper’s is Beaver Creek’s onmountain hideaway, surrounded by aspen and spruce trees at an elevation of 9,500 feet. The ski-in, skiout destination sleeps 10, featuring beautiful vistas, a cozy fireplace and hot tub. Guests can customize activities, service and cuisine with their personal Cabin Keeper. ZACH’S CABIN AND BEANO’S CABIN Beaver Creek Resort has some of the area’s most coveted dining cabins. Zach’s and Beano’s are both worth a separate visit, so if you only have a chance to go to one this season, check out the other one next year. Both are accessed by snowcat-drawn sleighs. Zach’s executive chef Tim McCaw’s cuisine embraces a Pacific flavor paired with local inspiration, while Beano’s executive chef Bill Greenwood creates modern flavors with quintessential Colorado cuisine.

MORNING ON THE MOUNTAINS Although daylight usually awakens dreams, like silver white winters that melt into spring — I find myself still streaming through heightened senses in the morning as I wake beneath plush covers, immediately beckoned by thoughts of first tracks just steps away from this break in my slumber. Upstairs from the bedrooms, light streams into the kitchen, illuminating a plate of fresh fruit, croissants and coffee cake, all accompanied by the sounds and smell of fresh coffee brewing — a welcomed preparation for the pre-ski dip in the steaming balcony tub. For just a moment when I step on to the deck, there’s fresh snow between my bare toes — it’s a powder daydream.
