Judy Wells DELORAINE TIMES & STAR deltimes@mts.net

Artist Scott Smith is taking a year off from his studies at the University of Manitoba, and plans on returning for his inal year of his undergraduate Honours Degree in ine arts. His academic goal is to eventually receive his Master’s degree in ine arts. Smith was born in Portage la Prairie but lived in Alberta most of his life, returning to Manitoba In 2012. At this time he enrolled at Brandon University, and completed one year before moving to Winnipeg, and studying at the U of M for the last four years. Charcoal drawing was always Smith’s favoured form of art until the Fall of 2015 when he registered for an oil painting class. “I always had (painting) in the back of my mind — there is more tradition in painting and I ind it more interesting to both create and contemplate a painting than a drawing.” Smith is using his year off to create a body of work (collection) to be ready for exhibition. He is also a photographer and works (paints) mostly from photographs. Smith’s favourite art movements are 19th century Romanticism and 20th century Surrealism, which he says “has been innovative through art history, especially during

the Renaissance. He is particularly inspired by early 20th century Belgian Surrealist painter, Rene Magritte, of which he says, “the Flemish have always been the best painters, and exceptionally innovative, especially during the Renaissance; Magritte was one of the best to come out of Belgium.” Smith’s favourite Contemporary artist is another Belgian Michael Borremans. Other inluences include Manet, Degas, and 17th century Spanish portraitist, Diego Velazquez. Every year the Art Mur Gallery in Montreal sends a letter to art professors at Universities across Canada, asking them to nominate their six best students working in painting/sculpture. From this list, roughly 40 artists are selected nationwide to shoe work from their oeuvre that is chosen by the gallery at their annual exhibition, Fresh Paint/New Construction. The two paintings selected from Smith’s collection were “Becoming” and “The Investigation”, both conceptually inluenced by the uncanny as it is described by Freudian psychoanalysis, one of the themes of the exhibition. With his paintings shipped off to Montreal, Smith is concentrating on his new studio digs in Deloraine. As it happened, the second-story space at the Prairie Skills building

was available for use. “I fell in love with the lighting from the large Gothic windows and the melancholic atmosphere which suits my style of artwork well. The Prairie Skills board was a huge help to me and they went out of their way to aid with whatever was needed. I can really tell that they are art enthusiasts, they seemed as excited as I am that the place was going to be used as an art studio. I would really love to see the space completely renovated so it can be appreciated, and made full use of again. When I’m ready, I hope to be able to have an exhibition in the building to show my work, and shed some light on the space’s potential.” “The building has been used for so many things over the course of its history, and it is exciting than an art studio can now be added to the list.” Smith’s goal is to be a professional artist. To this end, he hopes to catch the eye of art collectors and museums worldwide. “Fifty years ago painting was not cool —photography had taken its place, but unfortunately, now any medium is fair game, ” said Smith. Check out Scott’s face page at – facebook.com/ ScottSmithArtist Note: Scott’s connection to Deloraine is through his grandparents Peg and Jim Sanders.

Restaurant where a little ‘birdie’ told me they were having lunch). The four devoted bird watchers spent two and a half weeks in Manitoba starting in Churchill where they enjoyed the beluga whales. Other highlights were the shorebirds at Delta Marsh (Portage la Prairie) and redheaded woodpecker in the Alonsa area. They also made stops in Langruth, Winnipeg, Riding Mountain National Park and McCreary before settling into The Deloraine Wilderness Inn for a few nights. Following lunch, they were headed to the Lyleton area in hopes of a Burrowing Owl, Chestnut Collard Sparrow or Baird’s Sparrow sighting. As well, a visit to Whitewater Lake was a must as it is known as an Important Bird Area,

even though access is a challenge. Other wildlife they saw in their travels in Manitoba included a lynx, black bear, brown bear, Chestnut Longspur. I sure hope they found those elusive burrowing owls and other rare species they were looking for in our fair part of the country. The group is now back home in Sweden and they wish for me to relay this message: “We have traveled in many European countries throughout the years as well as in the U.S. birdwatching. We have never ever met such nice, friendly, hospitable people as in Manitoba! We have again never ever, seen a country so nice and clean without any litter. I don’t think we saw a single paper lying on the ground – ever. Fantastic!”

Birders are ardent about their hobby and travel great distances to see certain species. Four such enthusiasts from Karlstad, Sweden spent time in and around Deloraine last week. They say Karlstad’s claim to fame is that it is the home of hockey star Joel Ericson who lights up the scoreboard for the Minnesota Wild in the NHL. As well the city is home to Jonas Brodin who plays with The Wild and Oskar Klefbom who suits up with the Oilers. They refer to Karlstad as “a hockey-crazy place”. It is also home to these four: Berne Martinsson, Stefan Asker, Mats Strömberg and Göran Ekström. (Note: I caught up to them at The Rendezvous

The Bulls Are Back: Manor Fun Daze PBR Coming July 22 Lynne Bell CARLYLE OBSERVER observer@sasktel.net

The bulls are back! And so is an entire day of fun and excitement as the Village of Manor hosts its annual Manor Fun Daze PBR on Saturday, July 22. The celebration centres around the Professional Bull Riders (PBR)sanctioned competition which takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the community’s fairground. “All points the bull riders earn during this event count towards the Canadian Professional Bull Riders Finals in Las Vegas this fall,” says one of the event’s organizers, Andy Robertson. “Our event falls under the category of Canadian Touring Pro,” adds Robertson. “Competitors come to Manor from Canada and the U.S. and last year, we even had a rider from Guatemala. And we often get riders from Australia and sometimes, New Zealand.” “Last year we had 30 riders,” he says. “We’ve got young riders showing up on the scene as well as veterans,” he says. “It’s all totally unpredictable and you never know what’s going to happen next.” Robertson says that the accessibility of Manor’s PBR competition is an added attraction. “You’re right on top of it as a spectator,” he says. “You can really see it and

Archive photo that makes it different from a big fair event. And earler in the day, we’ve also got (junior) Ladies Barrel Racing for our fans to enjoy.” “We also have a new high-definition replay screen this year,” he says. “That hi-def screen is run by Feature Productions from Lethbridge. They do a lot of rodeo and after they do Manor, they’re off to do a rodeo in Swan River, Manitoba.” “It’s a day where there’s something for everyone,” says Robertson. Event treasurer Wendy

Zandee agrees, saying, “We’ve got a full day and evening, starting with a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall to start things off from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m.” “At noon, our parade runs down Main Street and this year, we’re trying to get some older vehicles in the parade, but really, anyone is welcome to participate. Anyone can join in, even if it’s on the morning of the parade.” “Last year, we had the firefighters from different communities in our

area show up and take part in the parade and it was great,” adds Zandee. “And this year - like every year - there’ll be lots of candy for the kids watching the parade.” “There’s also a slopitch tournament,” says Zandee. “And anyone who would like to enter a team can get in touch with Laurie Hughes at (306)- 577-9451.” Most of the day’s events take place at the Manor Fairgrounds, which are accessible via the village’s Main Street.

At the fairgrounds at 2 p.m., the Ladies Barrel Racing vent begins and the beer gardens open. Suppertime starts at 4 p.m., with barbequed beef and pork on the menu, prepared by popular local caterer, Rylan Weir. Bull riding begins at 6:30 and at 9 p.m., Saskatchewan country star Chris Henderson takes to the stage as the day closes out with a cabaret. Zandee says that through its 38 year-history, Manor Fun Dayz PBR is first and foremost,

RCMP Historical Case Unit remembers Dean Coulter Brandi Pollock MELITA NEW ERA cpocket@mts.net

The RCMP Historical Case Unit is in search of answers to the murder of a family man, Dean Coulter, which occurred on June 30, 2008. The RCMP want to ensure that Coulter is not forgotten and that answers are found, so they are asking for help in solving this cold case. “It is the ninth anniversary of Dean’s death. The RCMP investigators have

never stopped working to find justice for Dean, and the anniversary of his death provided an opportunity to remind the

public that we are still looking for answers,” said RCMP Media Relations Officer, Tara Seel. “Don’t assume we know what you know! If anyone has any information at all regarding what happened to Dean, we really want to hear from them.” The 44-year-old man was a horse trainer in the Reston-area and he was shot and killed, nine years ago. “Not a day goes by that we do not think of the son and brother we lost so tragically nine years ago.

We keep asking ourselves why he was murdered. If anyone knows anything, please come forward and help us get justice for Dean,” said Elizabeth Hayward, Dean’s mother, in a press release. Although specifics on the ground being made in the homicide investigation can’t be discussed, Seel explained the broad picture. “We can say that the RCMP Historical Case Unit has investigators who are very skilled at working on older investigations. When an investi-

gation transfers from the primary unit to the Historical Case Unit, the investigation gets a whole new set of eyes and the specialized skills of these investigators,” added Seel. The Police investigated all paths, all the evidence and have spoken to many, but yet, Coulter’s murderer has not yet been arrested. “This investigation will stay open until we find out what happened to Dean,” Seel continued. “Dean’s death will never

be forgotten. We are actively investigating his murder and hope that anyone who may know something gets in touch with us so we can get justice for Dean.” Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP at 204-984-6447 or call Manitoba Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com or text “TIPMAN” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).

table that your children will eventually become somewhat acquisitive. Obviously, it’s important to teach them that they can’t have everything – and they certainly can’t have everything right now. So, once they are old enough to receive an allowance or to earn money in some fashion, encourage them to set a goal for something they want, such as a toy or video game, and to put money aside every week for that goal. It’s also an excellent idea to model this behaviour yourself. So if you are considering making a major purchase in the not-toodistant future, such as a car, show your children how you are setting aside money regularly for this purpose, rather

than borrowing as much as you can or putting the entire purchase on a credit card. • Establish a budget. It can be challenging to create a household budget and just as difficult to stick to it – but for most people, it’s worth the effort. You’ll be doing your children a favour by showing them how you have a certain amount of income and where it goes – mortgage, utilities, groceries, retirement accounts, etc. – each month. Explain to your kids that by staying within your budget, you can help avoid problems such as debt and extra fees tacked onto bills for late payments. You might also want to point out that, as your income rises, you can

gain greater flexibility in budgeting. Here’s the key point: Living within your means pays off in the long run. • Have fun with investing. It might surprise you but even young children enjoy learning about the investment process, especially if you explain to them that they can be an owner of a company that makes a product or service they like. You might want to pick such a company and, along with your child, chart its course over time. You could give your child a pretend $100 bill to “invest” in this company and then see how its value changes, explaining along the way that various factors – such as the popularity of the company’s products, the

skill of its managers, and so on – will affect the stock’s price. At some point, you may even wish to purchase real stocks for your child and place them within a custodial account. And you might also want to show your child how your own stocks and other investments are performing. The investment world can be fascinating, and by sharing your enthusiasm for it with your children, you can encourage them to invest throughout their lives. Knowledge is power. And the more knowledge about finances and investing that you can impart to your children now, the more empowered they will be to make smart financial moves in the future.

Teach Your Children Well... About Finances and Investing is almost certainly financial illiteracy. Too many of us just never developed the money management skills necessary to cope with our complicated – and expensive – world. But if you have young children, you can teach them some money-smart lessons – and who knows? You could use the opportunity to give yourself a few valuable reminders, too. Here are some suggestions for a financial “curriculum”: • Save for a goal. In our highly commercialized culture, it’s almost inevi-

Melita’s Two New Canada 150 Murals

Melita residents are celebrating the completion of the two Canada 150 murals in commemoration of the sesquicentennial celebration this year. One mural, completed last June 7th is located on the south side of the Melita Library right along Front Street. The second mural, completed last June 19th is located on the north side of Super Thrifty Pharmacy along Souris Street. Both designs illustrate different landmarks and cultural representations that showcase Canada. The project deadline was

set for June 27, the kickoff celebration for the community’s Canada 150 events. Mayor Bill Holden spearheaded the project as part of the Town’s Canada 150 Celebrations. He said, “Both murals are excellent works of art. Congratulations to everyone who worked on it. We are very lucky to have talented people volunteer and pursue what just started out as an idea months ago. The murals really spruce up the town. I think these definitely add to the appeal of our community.”

Iris Vercaigne, Economic Development Officer said, “We are quite fortunate to have so many volunteers that are willing to help in making our Canada 150 Celebration special. At first, we had planned for just one mural since this will be the first one in Town. No one had previous experience with a similar project. After meeting with the art club and other volunteers, we identified the potential locations. The initial meeting ended with the group aiming higher and set-out to do two murals. We had to do

some research and called a few people from other communities with murals to ask how they did theirs.” Vercaigne estimates that the collective effort of all the volunteers working on the project was about 72 hours over a period of 20 days/ weeknights. To start, the Melita and Area Fire Department helped hose down both walls. The

Melita Library wall had unpainted cinder blocks. The group started working on this first because the priming and painting were more straightforward. The Super Thrifty wall was an older building and needed more prep work before any fresh coat of paint could be put on. Peter and Paul Kovac touched-up and sanded spots on the Su-

per Thrifty wall for a few days before the group got to apply the first coat of primer. Melita School’s Grade 12 student, Steward Pulinney was tapped to create the design that would go on the Super Thrifty wall. Together with other volunteers, the art club passionately worked on painting the designs until they got the project done last June 19. Continued on page 10

Other community volunteers/organizations that helped in this project were: Peter and Paul Kovac, Alex and Rochelle Oliver, Steward and Russell Pulinney, Dale Vercaigne, Aleeya and Marcus Laureola, Ally Beauchamp, Cyrell Gayumba, Morgan Murray, Jacquie Loucks, Antler River Recreation Dis-

trict, Melita & Area Fire Department, and NXTGen SouthWest. This was made possible by: Southwestern Manitoba Regional Library, Super Thrifty Pharmacy, Enns Brothers, and Sunrise Credit Union. This project was funded [in part] by the Government of Canada. The Canada 150 Celebration is being organized and funded [in part] by the Town of Melita. Background Town of Melita started

planning for the Canada 150 Celebrations since November of last year. It was in April when plans started taking shape. A couple of walls were identified around town to commemorate the sesquicentennial celebration. The design was projected onto the wall and traced prior to painting on the colors. Aside from drawing, Steward Pulinney is also a talented musician. He will be playing with his group, Pennyback on

June 27 and July 1 during the Canada 150 celebrations in Town. He was

the recipient of the 2016 Melita & District Chamber of Commerce Citizen

of the Year (Youth Category) Award. He is graduating on June 23, 2017.

Movie making in Elkhorn

Featuring Manitoba Antique Auto Museum Ed James Submitted

Two well known Westman film producers out of Brandon were onsite at the Elkhorn Auto Museum for a full day of shooting. The project is part of an ongoing series on life in Manitoba, covering a wide variety of topics. The film will be about 10 minutes in length, shown on pay per view TV, and is part of a project sponsored by Bell/ MTS communications. The Elkhorn Auto Museum is a Westman secret that many area people have missed; it features a very unique, valuable and historic collection of antique automobiles collected, and for the most part, restored by the late Ike Clarkson of Elkhorn. There are over 100 vehicles in the collection with several more in storage or under restoration.

Anne Davison VIRDEN EMPIRE-ADVANCE reporter1@empireadvance.ca

The Elkhorn Auto Museum documentary is part of It’s Our Town, a series of four documentaries being produced this summer, featuring museums of western Manitoba. This is all part of the Stories from Home pro-

However, the museum also has a large collections of non-auto items that show the life and times of the area for the last hundred or so years. The film crew was given a detailed tour of the museum with Restoration Club Chairman Allen Greig and club Secretary/Treasure Lil Jackson answering questions from producer Shaun Cameron. Graham Street was the cameraman. At a break in the filming Cameron explained, “The film will not only show the museum’s cars and other collections, but we hope to tie into the collective past of this and area communities so the next generation will not lose touch with the efforts of those who came before them in the community.” During another break, they said that they were amazed by the diversity

of the collection and the efforts of the people in the area to save the local history for future generations. “The museum,” remarked Street, “has a rich variety of artifacts that shows a strong connection to the community.” The daylong event had them tour all aspects of the museum, which they enjoyed very much, however the frosting on the cake, said Street was the opportunity to drive around the village in one of the museums many running cars. The vehicle was a classic piece of Detroit steel, a 1954 Mercury, fourdoor Monarch Lucerne, burgundy in color. The movie is expected to be released in the fall on the Bell/MTS network where, after all their hard work, it will show the importance of preserving local history and to let people know about this

diamond in the rough museum in Elkhorn. Jackson said the next day that they were good to work with and showed

a great interested in all aspects of the museum, including photos of the many early pioneers of the area. She hopes this

film production will be a shot in the arm to increase the number of visitors to Elkhorn’s museum complex.

Banana Days Brandi Pollock MELITA NEW ERA

Melita Banana Days is just over a month away and back in high demand after being nominated for the 14th Annual Tribute to Tourism Award in May. This year’s Banana Days are being held August 11-13, with full days of family entertainment and fun including Christine, the Crazy Hooper, who has been all over the world and performed on the Ellen Degeneres show. There will be lots of new events this year for all ages to try out and enjoy. “Saturday’s new spin on beach volleyball, beer gardens, bouncers and

more! The entertainment this year will blow your minds,” Melita Banana Days president, Camiel Serruys said. “The kids will come out ready to be entertained, the parents and grandparents will see so many smiling kids faces that they will join in on the fun and will have so many great memories to cherish forever.” It just wouldn’t be Banana Days without the ever so popular banana splits, children bouncers, reptiles, beer gardens, family petting zoo, car show, and the Museum old-fashioned tea. “Team Banana will be hosting this year’s Saturday night dinner and

so much more,” added Serruys. “Team Banana has created an almost free weekend for families to enjoy and make memories. They have created the official “home” weekend for everyone who has left lots to come back for the weekend. It’s also the perfect weekend to host a family reunion and school reunion or even that special anniversary.” If you haven’t been able to attend Banana Days in the past or even if you have been, this year you won’t want to miss out on with all the new events that have been incorporated. “We will not disappoint. Vendors throughout the weekend will keep

you fed and watered and give you a chance to shop around.... also the business and service group support we receive is tremendous

allowing us to put on one heck of a show. An amazing weekend for our little town. Hundreds of people, who am I kidding thou-

sands of people, fill our Town and we host one of Manitoba’s funniest family festivals,” concluded Serruys.
