‘Nailed it’:

Katie Vinge-Riddell’s legacy lives on at Forget fundraiser By Lynne Bell Katie’s Kitchen was open again, as family, friends and fans gathered at Forget’s Happy Nun Cafe, Saturday, Aug. 12 for an evening of food, friendship and fond memories to beneit the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship at Edmonton’s NAIT Culinary Arts School, in honour of the award-winning young chef and owner of Forget’s The Happy Nun Cafe. The evening was, unsurprisingly, sold-out. Guests dined on a four-course meal created by Chef Tim Davies of Regina’s Willows on Wascana restaurant, who volunteered his expertise for the evening in order to pay tribute to his one-time apprentice. “I was privileged to be invited to do this; we worked closely together,” said Davies, whose wife Sheeli Davies, assisted him in the kitchen. Katie’s sister, sommelier Jillian Vinge, oversaw wine pairing for each course, while the young chef’s husband, Riley Riddell tended bar. “Our family and the Vinge family have had so much support during this dificult time,” said Riddell. “It’s good to be back at The Happy Nun with all of our friends and family.” Jillian agreed, adding: “We’re happy to bring life into The Happy Nun again.” Katie’s friend, Roxann Waelchili was one of the young chef’s many friends and staff members who volunteered their time and talents to make the evening a success, along with musicians Wool Tree Grove. “We’re all friends of Katie’s here tonight and we all came together,” said Waelchli. “It’s hard, because we miss her so much, but tonight is just a lot of love for a special girl.” Prior to the fundraiser, Katie’s mother, Connie Vinge said, “The scholarship is entitled the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship, because that was her favourite saying when her food turned out perfectly - which really, was 100 percent of the time.”

PUZZLE SOLUTIONS

The name of the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship was inspired by one of the young chef’s favourite sayings. “The scholarship is entitled the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship, because that was her favourite saying when her food turned out perfectly – which really, was 100 percent of the time,” says Katie’s mother, Connie Vinge. Katie’s father, Tim Vinge (pictured) gave a moving address before the evening commenced and speaking on behalf of the Vinge-Riddell familIes, said: “The gratitude that we have for what you have done is beyond words.”

Katie’s Kitchen is open again, as the legacy of renowned Saskatchewan chef and owner of Forget’s Happy Nun Cafe - Katie Vinge-Riddell - will live on with the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will benefit young chefs studying at Edmonton’s NAIT culinary school. A benefit evening at The Happy Nun Cafe on Saturday, Aug. 12 to honour Katie’s life and legacy via the scholaship fund was, unsurprisingly, a sell-out, as family, friends and fans gathered to honour her, with an evening of food, friendship and fond memories.

“What we, as her family, want to do with this scholarship is to create opportunities for young chefs to follow their dreams and further their education like Katie did,” says her mother, Connie Vinge. “The requirements for the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship) are for a student who displays passion, creativity, teamwork and consideration for others - these are all characteristics she exhibited.” Katie’s sister, Jillian Vinge (pictured) said of the evening: “We’re happy to bring life into The Happy Nun again.”

Staff photos by Lynne Bell Katie Vinge-Riddell’s husband, Riley Riddell (pictured, right) with friend and Forget resident, Leon Gilbertson (left) manned the bar during the Katie-Vinge Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship” evening. Riddell says: “Our family and the Vinge family have had so much support during this difficult time. It’s good to be back at The Happy Nun with all of our friends and family.”

Katie Vinge-Riddell’s legacy lives on at Forget fundraiser “What we, as her family, want to do with this scholarship is to create opportunities for young chefs to follow their dreams and further their education like Katie did. The requirements for the scholarship are for a secondyear Culinary Arts student at NAIT who displays passion, creativity, teamwork and consideration for others - all characteristics she exhibited.” Katie’s father, Tim Vinge, graciously addressed the crowd, starting with numerous thank yous, and briely referring to the book, ‘When Bad Things Happen to Good People’ by Rabbi Harold Kushner. “When bad things happened to our Katie, the folks from Saskatchewan were there to help us, as well as our good friends. This is the way people from Saskatchewan are, and the gratitude that we have for what you have done is beyond words.” Tim addressed his daughter’s considerable professional and personal attributes, which included The Happy Nun’s numerous awards and accolades - the result of Katie’s talent and hard work. Since 2015, the restaurant was showcased by television’s ‘The Prarie Diner’, CTV’s Small-Town Saskatchewan Summer Tour, The Saskatchewanderer, and the Saskscapes podcast with Saskatoon radio personality, Kevin Power. Katie also addressed the Community Futures and Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan as their keynote speaker. The Happy Nun was also awarded The Saskatchewan Tourism Award of Excellence and earned a ive-star rating from TripAdvisor for Top Canadian Cuisine and Live Entertainment, as well as ive stars for Top Family-Friendly Dining. Most recently, the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) spent three days with Katie at The Happy Nun for a BBC Online feature, an event which Tim remembered with a smile. “When she told me The Happy Nun was being featured by the BBC, I thought it was bed and breakfast something,” said Tim. “I advised her not to take culinary arts - but she was interviewed by the BBC - not me!” “It shows you parents don’t always know best,” he added. Her father compared Katie’s career in culinary arts to his experience learning the violin. “Katie had a passion and a vision about culinary arts,” he said. “She got her cooking ability from both of her grandmothers and she found her place and passion at NAIT’s Culinary Arts program in Edmonton.” “Katie had to learn the language of food,” he added. “She apprenticed under Chef Tim Davies at the Willow on Wascana in Regina and she worked hard to be the best.” “She practiced and practiced. Her instructors at NAIT made sure all of her strings were in tune and they gave her their gift of passion.” “Eventually, through much perseverence and hard work, Katie was able to make sweet music in the kitchen of The Happy Nun.” “She was always focused on making sure that the food she prepared was good for the soul.” “Now is the time to look toward the future,” continued Tim. “Now is the time for us to help others learn to fulill their dreams and their passions.” “The Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship will help others play their own sweet music, so to speak and to fulill their dreams.” Katie’s passion will live on through this scholarship.” Connie Vinge said that the scholarship also addresses Katie’s considerable philanthropic contributions, which included animal rescue and numerous beneits for both organizations and individuals. “We want to continue the charitable work that Katie was so passionate about,” said Connie. Tim said of his daughter: “Katie left all of us a little better than when she got us.”

“The scholarship at NAIT will ensure that we can help the profession of culinary arts and leave it a bit better for future students in this program.” “We want to create new opportunities to support young chefs and their passion and vision,” said Tim. “This is what Katie would want and this is what Katie will get.” Tim ended his address with a poem by Dorothy Holmes: “What a delicious lunch

I munched on your words Nourishing my tired heart Enjoyed the sweet parfait of your smile. Drank deeply the essence of your laughter.” “Bon Appetit, Katie. Bon Appetit, all.” Contributions to the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship can be made online at: alumni.nait.ca/ katievinge 12.

Staff photos by Lynne Bell Katie Vinge-Riddell’s accomplishments and her reputation for compassionate community service extended far beyond southeast Saskatchewan. Her reputation for innovation soon garnered numerous awards and accolades for The Happy Nun Cafe, and most recently, the restaurant was featured on the U.K.’s BBC Online. Many also remember Katie’s many kindnesses and philanthropic acts, and her mother Connie Vinge says: “We want to continue the charitable work that Katie was so passionate about.” Contributions to the Katie Vinge-Riddell “Nailed It” Memorial Scholarship can be made online at: alumni.nait.ca/katievinge 12.

Archive photo Katie Vinge-Riddell’s father said of his daughter: “Katie left all of us a little better when she got us. And the scholarship in her name at NAIT will ensure that we can help the profession of culinary arts and leave it a bit better for future students in this program.”

Chef Tim Davies (foreground), his wife, Sheeli Davies (middle) and Katie’s friend, Roxann Waelchli - along with many others - volunteered their talents and time to make the scholarship fundraiser a success. Davies - head chef at Regina’s Willows on Wascana restaurant said of his former apprentice: “I was privileged to be invited to do this; we worked closely together.”

Rules of Golf

White Bear Lake Golf & the season’s second half

Although summer will soon end, White Bear Lake Golf Course offers golfers the chance to enjoy the course until mid-October. “Our last day is usually Thanksgiving Monday,” says resident pro, Gord Petker. “There’s still lots of time to golf and this year, the course is in great condition.” One of the inal tournaments of the 2017 season - The White Bear Admin Golf Tournament - takes place on Saturday, Sept. 2. “It’s a four-person scramble, with a mens division and a mixed division,” says Petker. “The irst tee time is at 10 a.m. and anyone who wants more information or to register, should call Jason Lamb at (306)-575-9876.” Whether enjoying a round of golf, taking part in a tournament, taking a lesson or hitting the driving range, White Bear offers one of Saskatchewan’s inest 18hole courses, surrounded by natural beauty. As a part of White Bear Lake Resort, the course features more than 6,700 yards of natural tree-lined fairways with aspen, ash and white birch trees. Hills, lakes and ponds are also part of the course’s natural beauty. And White Bear also boasts the only white silica sand bunkers in southern Saskatchewan. The course offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with no dress code, allowing golfers to enjoy the lake experience to the fullest. Golfers of all ages and skill levels are welcome and the course offers amenities that include: a driving range, individual, semi-private or group lessons, cart rental and storage and an array of goling essentials in the pro shop. Off the course, the fully-licensed restaurant caters to both golfers and non-golfers. “We always look forward to welcoming people to the course,” says Petker. “Whether they’re locals, returning visitors or visitors to the area, we can offer them great golf here at White Bear.”

Rule for Ball in Motion Stops on the Edge of the Cup after a Stroke By Golf Saskatchewan At the 2017 PGA Championship on Sunday Justin Thomas made a stroke on the 10th putting green and the ball came to a stop overhanging the hole. According to Rule 16-2 which states: “When any part of the ball overhangs the lip of the hole, the player is allowed enough time to reach the hole without unreasonable delay and an additional 10 seconds to determine whether the ball is at rest.” In Justin Thomas’ situation the ball fell into the hole approximately 12 seconds after it appeared to have stopped over the lip of the hole. Social media, some amateur rules oficials and many spectators questioned the situation Justin because the ball fell in after 10 seconds of the ball reaching the hole and therefore they claimed that the ball would have been at rest and that he should have assessed

His ball is overhanging the hole

His ball becomes part of PGA Championship folklore ... Where were you when the ball fell in? himself a 1-stroke penalty. They failed to take into account that Justin Thomas is allowed adequate time to assess the stroke he has just made and enough time to make his way to the hole before the 10-second count would begin. For this reason Justin Thomas did not

violate the rules and did not have to assess himself a 1-stroke penalty according to Rule 16-2 because his ball fell into the hole within the time that he is allowed to reach the hole after making his stroke. Happy goling and remember the Rules of Golf Matter

Carlyle Self Storage: Safe & Secure

Staff photo by Alison Dunning

Darren and Barb Swanson can help cure your clutter via their new business, Carlyle Self Storage, located on Hwy 9 South. The Swansons offer inside storage units of various sizes available to rent on a monthly basis, as well as outdoor storage spots suitable for campers, boats, trailers and other large units. By Lynne Bell Darren and Barb Swanson can help cure your clutter via their new business, Carlyle Self Storage, located on Hwy 9 South. The couple recently purchased the facility and they offer both long- and short-term secure storage, with inside units sized at 10’ x 10’, 8’ x 20’ and 8’ x 40’, as well as outdoor

storage spots suitable for campers, boats, trailers and other large units. “We bought an existing business,” says Darren. “It complemented our construction business, because if someone’s building a new home or doing a renovation, 90 percent of the time, they’ll need temporary storage.” “But it’s not only a situ-

ation like that,” he adds. “The way I look at things, I like my garage free so I can park in it and I want my yard clear, instead of having a boat or a trailer there. At the same time, I want things secure.” “We have one client who switches out their trailer and snowmobiles with their camper, depending on the season and that’s

why both convenience and security for our clients is so important.” The Swansons have recently made some changes to the facility with this in mind. “It’s completely fenced in, with a locked gate and other measures make it fully-secured,” says Darren. “Right now, we have

over 30 inside units of different sizes as well as lots of room for things like trailers, boats and other large units, and there’s lots of room to grow the business. We also offer containers that can be moved off-site so people can keep them on their property. And we are able to move those for our clients, too.”

“People have already expressed interest and we appreciate their support,” adds Darren. “We’ve retained clients from when the previous owner had the business and we also have a number of new clients already.” “We welcome anyone who is looking for safe and secure storage to give us a call at (306)-575-8001.”

Travelling to White City will soon be safer for area residents – motorists and pedestrians. Within the next day, the new White City overpass will open to trafic less than two years after construction started. A unique feature of the White City overpass is a pedestrian walkway that will connect the Trans Canada Trail on both sides of Highway 1. “The White City overpass, a vital link in the Regina Bypass project, puts us one step closer to completion of the project,” said Amarjeet Sohi, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “Our government’s infrastructure investments are achieving real and tangible results for all Canadians and this essential link will enhance safety for everyone travelling this busy stretch of road. I am proud to

be delivering on our government’s commitment to make historic investments in infrastructure, building strong, inclusive and sustainable communities across the country.” The White City overpass is a diamond interchange, with Highway 48 crossing overtop of Highway 1. With the construction of the overpass and the service road network well underway, people will be able to drive from Balgonie to Highway 33 without travelling on Highway 1. “For residents of White City and surrounding area, this overpass means safer access to and from their communities,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. ”The opening of the White City overpass is a sign that we’re another step closer to completing this phase

of the Regina Bypass.” By opening the White City overpass to trafic, the Regina Bypass Design Builders will be able to complete the remaining construction around the overpass. Once the overpass opens, the current intersection at Highways 1 and 48 will close. Work is also underway to establish the Trans Canada Trail system from Gregory Avenue, across the overpass and along the North Service Road. The walkways leading to the overpass are currently being designed. “The new overpass, and the White Butte Trans Canada Trail crossing, will enhance the quality of life for residents in the

region by making travel to and from the city safer, while providing a unique crossing of the TransCanada Highway by the Trans Canada Trail to be enjoyed for generations to come,” White City Mayor Bruce Evans said. “We hope the safety and trafic low improvements this project will bring to our municipality, and the White Butte Region, will allow our communities to continue to grow and leave a legacy of connectivity and safety for generations to come,” RM of Edenwold Reeve Mitchell Huber said. The irst phase of the Regina Bypass construction between Balgonie and Highway 33 will

be completed this fall, including overpasses at Balgonie, White City and Tower Road. The Pilot Butte overpass will be partially open to trafic in 2017 and fully operational in 2018. The remainder of the Regina Bypass will be completed in 2019. The Regina Bypass is the largest transportation infrastructure project in the province’s history. When complete, the Regina Bypass will enhance safety and

reduce trafic congestion in and around the City of Regina. For the latest trafic restrictions related to the Regina Bypass project, please follow Regina Bypass Partners on Twitter @reginabypass and regularly check the Highway Hotline at www. hotline.gov.sk.ca. For additional information or questions, visit www. reginabypasspartners. ca or call 1-844-6794828.
