Carmel Catholic High School Annual Report 2019-2020
Mission Centered in Jesus Christ, Carmel Catholic is a college preparatory high school, empowering students to be servant leaders filled with zeal for faith and scholarship. Rooted in the charisms of the Order of Carmelites and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our Catholic community embraces a tradition of dignity, diversity, and justice.
History Founded in 1962, Carmel Catholic is jointly sponsored by the Order of Carmelites (O.Carm.) and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM). In 1960, the Archdiocese of Chicago invited these two religious communities to build a co-institutional Catholic high school in Lake County. In September 1962, Carmel High School for Boys opened its doors to a freshmen class of 175 students. In September 1963, Carmel High School for Girls admitted students. In August 1988, the two schools merged and a separate corporation was established for the new co-educational school. For more than 50 years Carmel Catholic High School has been committed to providing a quality Catholic education and forming young men and women to make a positive impact in society.

Letter from Brad Bonham, President
Greetings and blessings to all of you, I want to begin this letter by providing a note of thanks to all of you. There are so many who have provided and sacrificed for the students at Carmel Catholic. It is hard to think of a time when so many have had to overcome adversity. COVID-19 has had crippling effects on so many physically and psychologically. Through these difficulties, I am amazed by how people have risen and helped those in need. It is genuinely humbling to see. Over the last several months, I have met with parents over Zoom calls to “check-in and see how they and their child(ren) are doing. Many have been very honest with the frustration and difficulties they are facing. As a father of two at Carmel Catholic, I have witnessed first-hand the hardships our students have endured. However, I have also seen and experienced the resolve and fortitude of so many in our community. Our students have been so mentally strong. They are fighting the good fight and have shown courage and resiliency. In a recent conversation I had with a family, we discussed the importance of hope. The belief in a better future helps lead us through the darkest of times because we know God is with us. Hope is synonymous with our faith and the mission of Carmel Catholic. Hope endures in the halls of Carmel Catholic because we believe, fervently, that we exist for the betterment of others in a faithfilled, Catholic environment. The purpose of this publication is to acknowledge and thank those who have sacrificed so our students can have a better education. The gifts of your time, talent, and treasure do not go unnoticed. Because of your contributions, our students walk the halls in a Christ-centered environment. Through your sacrifices, you have enabled us to bring faith and hope to our students. We are grateful and humbled by so many who have given so much. With my deepest gratitude, Brad Bonham, Ph.D. President of Carmel Catholic High School

Corsairs Return to Campus
With many COVID-19 precautions in place to begin the 2020-2021 school year – the thermal scanners, the hybrid educational plan, the television-style classroom cameras, the mobile app symptom check – Carmel students and teachers returned to campus in August. The return to in-person learning, buoyed by a spirit of cooperation, ingenuity, and gratitude for the opportunity, received high marks.
echoing in the classrooms struck Mr. Donner, reminding him of the gratitude he feels to be part of the Carmel community.
“In the darkness, we have seen Christ’s light shine in our community,” President Brad Bonham notes.
To live out this new educational call, teachers worked through a lengthy checklist to begin the year. They needed to address items such as verifying spacing in the classroom, testing the functionality of the virtual classroom, and ensuring the best possible experience for those students choosing online learning for the full semester.
For senior Owen Hodges, the return to school has been reassuring in many ways. When he notices Principal Jason Huther or Chaplain Fr. Christian Shiu scrubbing desks, he feels safe. Hodges could not be more impressed at how teachers and staff seek to pro-actively guard students’ well-being, from mask enforcement to constant sanitizing. Carmel staff worked through the summer to set this tone, leaving students to now enjoy, and benefit from teaching, in a way not possible via eLearning. The social interaction with classmates, though limited, also provides a lift. “Being able to see my classmates in person has made discussion more genuine,” Hodges says. “Our eagerness to participate stems from this physical, in-person connection we are privileged to receive at Carmel.” Theology instructor Phil Donner knows no amount of technology replaces personal interaction. He sees student growth occur when they can simply talk with one another. Hearing conversations and laughter
“It’s a testament to this community that we’ve been able to maintain the in-person option so far. It takes everyone to make this a reality – and Carmel has been living it out,” he says.
“For all of the different realities that we’re navigating this year, it also gives us a chance to try different approaches and create new traditions,” Mr. Donner adds. “While the experience may be a bit different than we were expecting a year ago – it doesn’t mean that we miss out – it gives us a chance to create anew. That’s the challenge for Carmel as a community of hope.” Returning to school has left Hodges deeply appreciative of Carmel’s efforts. “The work and effort of the Carmel administration shows how dedicated they are to their students’ education and safety,” he says. “I am proud to be a Corsair, and I am so very glad that my parents made the sacrifices they needed to make to get me involved in such a tight-knit, caring Catholic community.”

Alumni and Staff Spotlights Carmel Catholic’s alumni and staff continue to shine and make their mark on the world around us. Our values are the foundation that allow our students to become servant leaders enriching the lives of individuals, building better organizations and ultimately creating a more just and caring world. Here are a few of our alumni and staff sharing how Carmel shaped them and their post high school experiences. Read more on pages 32 and 33.
Kairos Retreat he took at the end of his junior year. He was greatly moved and realized that he was (and still is) part of the strong, supportive Carmel community.
Jay Sharp ’91 Among the many Carmel alumni on the front lines of the pandemic is Dr. Jay Sharp ’91. He is currently an Emergency Room physician at Amita Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago. In the spring, Jay found himself confronted by a significant jump in COVID cases coming into the emergency room. “I was amazed at how sick the patients were,” he commented. Jay found this time to be challenging and a test of his skills and training. “The pandemic has changed the way we cared for patients in the ED. We had to rethink how to keep the staff and patients protected from the virus.” He also had to take extensive precautions to prevent himself from contracting the disease as well as protecting his wife, Anna, and his three grade school children from introducing the virus to them at home. “There was concern that we may not have enough protective equipment to keep the staff protected, but my hospital did a great job procuring all the necessary PPE to keep us going.” Jay fondly remembers the great experiences he had as a student at Carmel. He recalls one of the most important times for him was the
He felt that Carmel prepared him well for his next destination as a student at The University of Notre Dame. “Carmel really laid the groundwork for the success I had academically in college and medical school.” He fondly remembers faculty members Bob Watson, Jerome Donahue, and his French teacher, Tony Recchia. One of his most memorable experiences as a student was a trip to Europe with Mr. Recchia and other students during spring break. “Mr. Recchia really trusted us to navigate a foreign city and return safely at the end of the day. I felt like I really grew up on that trip.” Jay annually donates to Carmel because he feels he still belongs to the Carmel community. He appreciates the education he received and the enduring friendships made. “Carmel helped me get to where I am today. Giving to Carmel is a simple way to say thank you for all that Carmel did for me.” Jay will also contribute to students as a guest speaker for health sciences classes in the near future.
“Carmel really laid the groundwork for the success I had academically in college and medical school.” 6
In the 96-year history of WGN Radio, there has never been a female in the top job...until now. Mary Sandberg Boyle ’94 is VP and general manager of WGN Radio. But let’s go back a few years. Eightyear old Mary used to “play radio” in her family home and introduce songs as she played cassette tapes on her made-up radio station, KMS (which stood for Katy (her sister), Mary, Sandberg). KMS had an audience of two...her parents. At Carmel, she wasn’t really thinking about what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She stresses that it is ok at that age. “You can not know what you are going to do and it’ll still work out. You can still have a really valuable experience, not having all the answers.” Boyle hopes Carmel students learn to put less pressure on themselves to figure out who everyone else wants them to be, and to just follow the opportunities. That’s exactly what Boyle has done in her career. While attending UIC, she took a chance on an internship with Kevin Matthews at WLS-FM, which led to career success as executive producer and a key personality on-air. Highlights include the Steve Dahl Show, The Morning Show (WBBM), and The Opening Bell on WGN. Since 2015, she has had several roles in climbing the ladder at WGN, including making the unusual and difficult transition from the programming side to management.
Mary Sandberg Boyle ’94 Early challenges in her top position included new ownership, and making some difficult programming changes on a radio station with very engaged listeners. Her success is evidenced by a year-to-year increase in ratings of 31% with adults 25-54. She also had to create a plan to keep 130 employees safe during the pandemic and downtown civil unrest while continuing to produce 24/7 content. But Boyle says everyone has done an amazing job. “I can’t believe I get to do this here,” says Boyle. “To have the opportunity to lead the greatest radio station in Chicago surpasses any dream I’ve ever had.” Mary is married to Pat Boyle, a local sportscaster on NBC Sports Chicago, and ESPN Radio.
“Once you’re a part of it, you’re never not a part of it. I’m so proud I went to Carmel!” She thinks many Corsairs don’t realize what a special place it is until after they leave. “I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Carmel, but you don’t necessarily know that when you’re there.” She says her parents made financial sacrifices for her to attend Carmel.

Carmel Catholic High School 2019-2020 Fundraising Highlights
Golf Classic Celebrate Carmel On June 18, 2020, friends and family gathered safely in their homes to attend Carmel Catholic’s first-ever virtual Gala called “Bourbon, Boots and Bling.” Guests attending the event enjoyed being entertained by Stu the Piano Guy, a blessing from Bishop Rassas, and a heartwarming speech from Luzolo Matundu ’20 while supporting our goal of having Carmel Catholic High School accessible to all families who value Catholic education. Despite having to pivot to a virtual platform, we were still able to raise over $60,000! Thank you to the many volunteers and supporters who were able to make this night a success! Volunteers are the key and heart of this mission. Please contact Michelle Ptasienski at mptasienski@carmelhs.org or Denise Spokas at dspokas@carmelhs.org to join this fun and dynamic team to make Celebrate Carmel 2021 another huge success!

The Carmel Catholic Golf Classic has always been a community-wide event that draws over 100 alumni, current parents, past parents, and friends of Carmel Catholic. This well-attended annual event directly supports students through tuition assistance programs. In 2019-20, Carmel Catholic High School was able to award over $1.5 million in tuition assistance funds. Unfortunately, due to uncertainties surrounding COVID-19, the 2020 Carmel Catholic Golf Classic was canceled, but stay tuned for the 2021 Carmel Golf Classic. We’ll be back, and will continue to raise much-needed funds for tuition assistance!
Walkathon
Street Scenes Street Scenes, Carmel Catholic’s largest annual fundraiser, featured more than 50 bands, a casino, improv, theater, food, and drinks. Thanks to hundreds of Carmel Catholic volunteers and our Chair Couple, Chris and Mark Perrelle, Street Scenes “Goes Undercover” raised more than $285,000 to support Carmel Catholic’s academic programs. The school was transformed into a spectacular fun-filled venue, and through the generous efforts of our students, their parents, Carmel alumni, and friends, Street Scenes was once again a huge success. Stay tuned for more details about our next Street Scenes in 2021! If you would like to volunteer for this lively and exciting event, please contact Michelle Ptasienski at mptasienski@carmelhs.org.
Volunteers Carmel Catholic volunteers are the backbone of each and every project and event! Countless goals have been achieved thanks to our generous volunteers, and we are forever thankful for their gifts of time or talent. Please consider volunteering your time or talent to help make our school an excellent place for our students and families. Please contact Michelle Ptasienski at mptasienski@carmelhs.org to find out more about school community opportunities, fundraising opportunities, fine arts, athletics, and clubs.
Every May for the past 40 years, Carmel Catholic students have walked as a community for our annual Walkathon. In May of 2020, we continued this community event as a virtual walk and instead of raising funds for a campus improvement project, we raised much-needed emergency relief funds for Carmel Catholic families impacted by COVID-19. With support from our students and sponsors, we were able to raise over $95,000.
“During the COVID-19 crisis, it is critical we provide every resource available to assist our students in meeting their educational needs.” -Dr. Brad Bonham, Ph.D., President In past years, students’ efforts have contributed to more than $100,000 per year to campus improvement projects such as the following: • 2019: Auditorium improvements and renovations • 2018: Design features throughout the school to ensure student safety • 2017: Two new school minibuses, a Mac lab in the Information Commons, support the Business INCubator curriculum • 2016: Mary of Mount Carmel Prayer Garden • 2015: Athletic Field Improvements Fund (turf, track, and tennis courts refurbishment) • 2012-2014: Carmel at The Threshold Campaign (Fine and Performing Arts Center and Information Commons construction) We are grateful to the Carmel Catholic student body who continue this tradition of giving to the school for the improvement of the campus for current and future Corsairs, and their family and friends who support their fundraising efforts.

Kathy A. Nemmers Welcome Center On Wednesday, September 9, President Brad Bonham, Ph.D., welcomed an intimate gathering of family and friends to the Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Kathy A. Nemmers Welcome Center. Sr. Mary Frances McLaughlin, BVM gave a reflection followed by readings by Sam Nemmers ’01 and Mike Nemmers ’03. Kathy’s favorite song, The Isle of Issisfree, was sung by Jane Lambiris ’75. Fr. Robert Carroll, O.Carm, Ph.D., blessed the Welcome Center, followed by a ribbon cutting by grandson, Leo Nemmers. “Today’s dedication is a celebration of three things: Life, Light, and Love. Life, because the old lobby and chapel have been given new life as the Kathy A. Nemmers Welcome Center. Light, because light is synonymous with “Welcome.” Love, Carmel Catholic was founded on the teaching and example of Jesus Christ, who was only about love.” ~ Joe Nemmers ’73 Kathy served on the Board of Directors at Carmel Catholic High School, and she and Joe have four sons, Sam ’01, Mike ’03, Max ’06, and Tom ’10 Nemmers. Kathy was a member of the Carmel community for a long time, and this Welcome Center will ensure that her presence will remain vibrant.

in the mid-80s to the Illinois State Tournament Sweet Sixteen. Although Mike was living in Tampa, he kept track of Frank’s teams and their success. “I could feel the influence he had on his players and students.” Sadly, Frank passed away in April of 2016. In 2017, Carmel started its annual alumni basketball game in Frank’s honor, and former players from all eras have returned annually since. Later that year, Mike attended his 40-year reunion in Mundelein. “I was so happy to re-connect. I had been connected with some through Facebook, but to attend and have conversations was great.
Mike Belmont ’77 Although Mike Belmont ’77 has lived in Florida for 37 years, his connection to Carmel Catholic remains strong. “My parents sacrificed a great deal to allow all of us to go to Catholic schools,” said Belmont. The five children of Frank Sr. and Mildred all attended Immaculate Conception in Waukegan before he and his brothers (Frank Jr. ’71 and John ’84) came to Carmel and two sisters attended Holy Child High School in Waukegan. Mike then attended Marquette, studying Journalism and Political Science, worked in municipal and real estate finance for several years after graduation, and has now spent decades in the Florida home building industry. Since 2008 he has served as President of Minto Communities and is currently responsible for the management and oversight of its U.S. operations. Minto has been developing master planned communities and building homes in Florida for over four decades and builds more than 1,200 homes a year. These 55 and over adult communities have recently expanded to Daytona, Hilton Head and Panama Beach City. Mike’s brother, Frank, was a staple in Carmel history as a teacher, head boys basketball coach and Athletic Director. He led his teams

That’s when Mike decided he wanted to do more. Motivated by the sacrifice his parents had made decades ago, Mike wanted to help make it easier on other families. He made a very generous donation and started the Frank Belmont Memorial Scholarship in honor of his brother. The scholarship is awarded annually and alumni players are invited to donate toward the scholarship.
“I’m fortunate to be able to celebrate Frank’s memory by supporting Carmel and Catholic education.” Mike hopes that Carmel will continue its academic priorities and is happy to help students maintain a high level of education. When asked what advice he would have for Carmel students, he said through a chuckle, “Study harder than I did!”
Paulette Stith Carmel faculty have a reputation for teaching at Carmel for many years. Some careers like Paulette Stith’s spanned generations of Corsairs. What started as a parttime position in 1981 teaching religion at Carmel for Girls, expanded into a full-time faculty position for nearly 40 years until Paulette’s retirement in 2017. “Carmel was a great experience,” she said. “I miss teaching at Carmel. I loved teaching at Carmel. I loved knowing the families. I enjoyed the camaraderie with the faculty.”
“The relationships with students are so fundamental.” Paulette’s main focus was teaching religion, but her involvement grew into so much more than a job. She viewed herself as being at
the start of her students’ lifelong journey. She learned to read the moods of her students individually, whether happy or sad. “I would be going through a class. I would see that this kid needs to see a counselor. This kid needs time to collect themself,” she said. “The relationships with students are so fundamental.” Paulette’s time at Carmel spans the transition from the girls’ and boys’ side to a single co-ed school, along with teaching style and technology changes. She said she adjusted her teaching style to accommodate the single-sex and co-ed classes. Teachers have an added challenge to balance the advantages and disadvantages of technology. A significant style change is that teachers can no longer lecture to students. They now need to create more interactive classes to create a better learning experience.
Paulette is very excited to have two of her children, her son-in-law and a granddaughter as the next generation at Carmel – Brian ’01, Executive Director of Marketing and Admissions; Julie Donner ’99, Social Studies; Philip Donner, Theology; and, Lilyan, class of 2023. Paulette and Ed Stith have four children – three graduated from Carmel and their youngest Kevin has Down Syndrome. While Kevin did not attend Carmel, he was always embraced as a part of the Carmel community. Their oldest son, Andrew ’97, is the founding President of Cristo Rey High School in Milwaukee. All of her children have embraced Carmel’s culture, mission, and charisms of Carmel’s founding orders – the BVMs and Carmelites. “Carmel was a place where I wanted them to be. I was excited to have them as students and now two of them as employees at Carmel. Carmel’s values are our values.”

Corsairs for Corsairs Fund As the world moved into a time of uncertainty this past spring, Carmel Catholic quickly switched to e-learning and made plans for the months ahead. At the same time, Corsairs from around the country were asked to help us through this unprecedented time by contributing to the new campaign, “Corsairs for Corsairs.” The fund allowed Carmel Catholic to quickly address unexpected challenges: the growing need for scholarship funding, providing a home and ongoing support to 24 international students, supporting our incredible faculty as class instruction was adapted to e-learning, and providing critical operation budget funding due to the fluctuation in the economy. The response was tremendous. Through the end of the fiscal year, Corsairs dug deep for their fellow Corsairs to the tune of $46,000. We thank these donors for their consideration and donations during the initial critical part of the crisis. Thank you, Corsairs!

Class of 1967 Legacy Scholarship Three years ago, the Class of 1967 50-year reunion committee started a campaign (as part of their reunion celebration) to establish a scholarship in the class’ name. If they reached their goal, it would be the first scholarship in the name of a Carmel graduating class. The lofty goal of $25,000 was reached this spring! Congratulations to all who were a part of this campaign. Special recognition and thanks to the hard-working members of the 1967 scholarship committee: Margie Foley-Matthews, Mike Gavigan, Margaret Steffenhagen-Janiszewski, and Eileen Welsh. The Class of 1967 Legacy Scholarship will now begin the process of becoming an annually awarded scholarship, hopefully to begin in the 2021-2022 school year. Continued donations will only help in increasing the impact that this scholarship will make. Learn more at carmelhs.org/1967/.

Kelly Circle Donors who have made Carmel Catholic High School a beneficiary in their estate plans become members of the Kelly Circle in recognition of their commitment to the continuation of Carmel Catholic’s mission. Sr. Mary Cecil Kelly, BVM was the first principal of Carmel High School for Girls.
