The beginning of the school year is always a wonderful time for the Carmel Catholic community. The academic year starts with excitement, hope, and a renewed sense of purpose and faith. As the president of Carmel Catholic, I am often reminded of the great love that our students, parents, and alumni have for our school. This love is expressed through the briefest comments or the most generous outpouring of gifts and support to our students.

WELC O M E

“God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.” C.S. Lewis

Moreover, it is a foundation, which inspires continued growth for our future. C.S. Lewis said it best when he wrote that we could not be happy or at peace apart from God. This statement holds true on everything we do at Carmel Catholic. There are so many exciting and new initiatives within our school, such as new academic programs, the expansion of our retreat programs, and new options in academic and student support. None of this matters unless Christ is at the center of everything we do.

Thank you, as always, for your generosity, prayers, and commitment to Carmel Catholic High School. We are deeply grateful and look forward to another outstanding and enjoyable school year. Go Corsairs!

In Christ’s Love, Bradley K. Bonham, Ph.D. President of Carmel Catholic High School

COMPASS | Summer 2018

This fall, Carmel Catholic will install a new Christ statue, which will symbolize our love and willingness to serve Christ in all things as a school community. The Christ statue will be in a prominent area and well lit at night so all may see it as they drive through and by the school. The Christ statue will serve as a reminder that we can never know a life of peace and faith in our lives without the Lord. I always welcome you to visit our campus to experience the new and beautiful things happening.

Mission-Centered Mural is Newest Addition to Fine Arts

Four art students put in countless hours of work over the course of three months to complete a new Carmel-themed mural in the hallway of the Fine Arts wing. The mural, which was painted on a 40-foot curved wall and stands 8 feet tall, features the six values of our Carmel community: Community, Academics, Reverence, Mission, Enthusiasm, and Leadership. Carly Manshum ’18, Olivia Klein ’18, Haley Morozin ’18 and Allison Bryant ’19, worked together to brainstorm ideas for the mural and, after a couple of revisions, their design was approved. The girls transferred their design in early February and then, with the help of student volunteers, they added color to the wall. The mural was officially finished on May 15 after the artists signed the wall. “I am beyond proud of the artists. They did a phenomenal job!” said Alejandra Jaimes, Fine Arts teacher. “The amount of time and work that went into this project is something to admire. If you haven’t had a chance to see the mural, I highly encourage you to take a stroll through the Fine Arts wing.” 4

“The bricks on our mural represent the stacked bricks on the outside of the building. Also, there is a girl - which represents a Carmel student - who is holding the 2018 yearbook. The yearbook includes the names of the artists who painted the mural. The girl’s flowy hair extends the length of the wall, and it holds the Carmel values: Community, Academics, Reverence, Mission, Enthusiasm, Leadership.” - The artists

“We wanted to portray our community here at Carmel, more specifically the Fine Arts wing and the classes that are offered. All of the silhouettes depict the different areas of the Fine Arts department, such as photography, theatre, visual arts, dance, band, and choir.” - The artists

COMPASS | Summer 2018

“Faith is an important aspect of Carmel, and we used the cross, the Kairos necklace, and a scapular to represent this. Also, we included stained glass windows, which are the exact stained glass windows found in our Brandsma Chapel, to represent our faith further.” - The artists

Mr. Jason Huther Appointed Principal Carmel Catholic High School President Dr. Bradley Bonham, along with the Board of Directors, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Jason Huther as the next principal of Carmel Catholic High School, effective August 3, 2018. “Mr. Huther is an exceptionally thoughtful and effective leader who brings a wealth of experience in Catholic education and administration to our community,” said Dr. Bonham. “His expertise includes six years of principal experience in Catholic schools.” Mr. Huther’s most recent position was Headmaster at Covington Latin School in Covington, Kentucky. He has served as an instructor in higher education and as a high school Latin teacher. Mr. Huther has earned two Master’s degrees and is a graduate of the Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame. “The principal search committee sought a proven leader who is charismatic, has the ability to lead and affect change, connect well with people and build relationships,” said Dr. Bonham. “We believe Mr. Huther possesses all of these qualities and therefore, it was the committee’s unanimous decision to offer him the position.” “I felt an attraction to Carmel Catholic because of its strong sense of mission, and the availability of programs to fully develop young men and women into leaders guided by faith,” said Mr. Huther. “The culture seems contagiously enthusiastic and supportive, and I wanted to be a part of it. I remain nothing but excited to be a part of Carmel Catholic and cannot wait to get started.” Carmel Catholic High School looks forward to welcoming Mr. Huther, his wife, Katie, and their two children into the community.

“My first goal is simple – to meet the people of Carmel Catholic. It’s the people that sustain the mission, that devote their time and talents, and that fully demonstrate the lived values we promote. By getting to know the people, I will come to learn the culture and traditions of Carmel Catholic. I also intend to engage all stakeholders in the strategic plan. I will encourage everyone to take up a spirit of continuous review and improvement and to celebrate our successes. I will also work with the community to see how to best integrate the faith into everything that we do. If we promote a strong sense of faith in our students, we can best develop their unique gifts and create an effective learning environment.” - Mr. Huther

A relic of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was generously gifted to Carmel Catholic High School by the family of Jeff Ptacek, Religious Studies teacher, and was installed in the Brandsma Chapel on March 23. The relic is a small reliquary containing a clipping of hair with the Latin inscription identifying the relic as belonging to French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. The relic was a possession of Mr. Ptacek’s great-aunt, Sister John Martha Knybel, School Sisters of Notre Dame. Following Sr. John Martha’s passing, Mr. Ptacek and his family donated the relic to Carmel Catholic High School with the hope that this small remnant of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux may inspire a student who sees it. The relic is housed in the Blessed Titus Brandsma Chapel at Carmel Catholic High School, located in the side altar chapel with the window that bears Saint Thérèse’s symbols.

On May 7, three Carmel Catholic ceramics classes participated in an on-campus Raku workshop led by artist Carl Mankert of Chicago Kiln Services. Many vases and sculptures created by the ceramic students were glazed during the wonderful firing process of the Raku technique. Carl provided a variety of glazes for students to use and he fired the pottery in his kilns. Before this event, students spent two weeks planning and constructing their nature-inspired vases; thumbnail sketches were created to develop a design and then, using Raku clay and the slab hand-building method, the vases were constructed.

Golf Classic 2018

On a beautiful sunny Monday in June we held our annual Golf Classic at Hawthorn Woods Country Club. More than 100 alumni, current parents, past parents, and friends golfed and raised funds for tuition assistance programs. Last year Carmel Catholic awarded more than $1.5 million in tuition assistance funds. Our school community is strengthened because these students continue to share their gifts with all of us while experiencing the generosity of our donors.

Celebrate Carmel

On October 21, 2017, Carmel Catholic hosted its premier event, Celebrate Carmel, with 300 attendees enjoying an unforgettable evening of cocktails, heavy hors-d’oeuvres, music, and auctions benefitting school programming and scholarships. The event was held on campus and showcased our students’ talents and accomplishments. The event was a huge success, with our students and faculty putting together dozens of gift baskets in addition to donated auction items making a considerable difference in the funds that were raised. Please save-the-date: This year’s event will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

Marisa Schostok ’06 Receives Outstanding Volunteer Award On May 11 at the 42nd Annual Faces of Philanthropy Awards Luncheon, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Chicago honored eight of the most distinguished leaders in Chicago’s philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. AFP was proud to recognize Marisa Schostok ’06 and the Michael Matters Foundation with the Outstanding Volunteer Award for exceptional dedication to patients with brain tumors and their families. The Michael Matters Foundation exists to help families manage incidental costs while they are focused on treatment and care of brain tumors. The foundation was created in memory of Michael Schostok, a husband, father of three children and attorney, who friends say had a special way about him that could make anyone feel they were the most important person in the room. Michael was diagnosed with an inoperable Glioblastoma brain tumor in April 2011. He lost his battle on July 16, 2012. During those 15 months, Michael and his family came to understand how quickly the demands of treatment and financial pressures could challenge patients and their journey with the disease. Within a year of Michael’s passing, his family started The Michael Matters Foundation in hopes of assisting brain cancer patients and their families who need financial assistance during their difficult journey with brain cancer. Michael’s daughter, Marisa Schostok, an associate attorney at the law firm of Dudley & Lake, LLC, currently services has the president of the foundation and believes every cancer patient has the right to fight their disease with dignity and without financial worries. Together with her mom, Mary, and other family and friends, the Michael Matters Foundation launched a patient assistance grant for brain tumor patients at NorthShore University HealthSystem Kellogg Cancer Center. This support can help with pre-existing needs that the patient or family is suddenly challenged to meet due to their illness or to help offset many of the numerous costs that may arise (such as parking, travel, and meals) that can accompany the patient experience. The Foundation operates almost exclusively on a volunteer basis and relies on contributions from supporters and in-kind donations to support grant recipients. To date, more than 100 patients and their families have benefited from the Michael Matters Foundation’s support, and the program has expanded to include numerous healthcare organizations throughout the Chicago area.

Ben Allen came to visit Carmel recently and ran into Mrs. Julie Wilkins, who asked him to speak to her Freshman English classes about his experiences in the Navy. Ben enthusiastically said yes and stayed throughout the afternoon to share his stories with our students. A few of the students in the classes happen to have parents in or are retired from the Navy, so this was an extraordinary moment of connection with them. Ben did an excellent job of explaining how many opportunities are available via enlisting. It was an insightfully, educational day told from the perspective of a recent CCHS grad.
