One of my joys as the president of Carmel Catholic is the opportunity to attend morning Mass in our Brandsma Chapel. It is a way for me to center myself and to see the larger picture of Carmel Catholic’s mission and who we are as a school community. We are grateful to Fr. John Kartje and Fr. Brian Welter for their leadership and support by celebrating our morning Masses at Carmel Catholic.

Greetings and blessings to you this new year!
The celebration of morning Mass is available for everyone, including students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni, on Mondays and Fridays. We begin the celebration at 7:15 a.m., which is early for many, but especially for high school students who are so busy with schoolwork and extracurricular activities. At each morning Mass, we consistently have many students plus faculty, staff and parents who attend, regardless of the time of school year or what the weather brings. It is heartening to see each student arrive with full book bags, place their bags in the lobby outside the Brandsma Chapel and come in for a joyous moment of celebration as a community to praise our Lord.
All of these positive happenings would not be possible without people who support our mission. It is the fundamental belief that the Lord is at the center of all that we do. God is our strength and the source of our conviction. We teach our students a valuable life-lesson; you will have hardship, but your faith in God will carry you forward. Luke 1:37 “For with God, nothing shall be impossible.” As we move forward in our strategic plan, we shall always be a Christ-centered school, and we will always have the love and support of many for our mission at Carmel Catholic. In just a very short time, Carmel Catholic High School has embarked on so many new endeavors and programs. It is almost staggering to think of the amount that we have accomplished in these few short years. These new accomplishments include a new engineering program, a Business Incubator program, a comprehensive academic support center, the launching of a four-year retreat program, a Robotics program placing 13th in the world, our new Mary of Mount Carmel Garden, campus and environmental grounds improvements, and great successes in our boys’ and girls’ athletic programs, including multiple state championships. We have accomplished these things and so much more.

New Place for Carmel Community to Pray
Mary of Mount Carmel Garden adds sacred, symbolic meaning to campus There is a new place on campus for students, faculty, staff, alumni and all within the Carmel Catholic community to pray and reflect. Completed in August, the garden is located in the area across from our main entrance and features new landscaping, a water element, walking paths, and most notably a statue of Mary created by internationally acclaimed sculptor Timothy P. Schmalz. Nearly every aspect of the garden holds a symbolic value. As part of the statue, Mary is wearing the traditional Carmelite scapular, a long cloth that drapes in front, and is holding smaller scapulars in her hands. The way her veil is depicted is noteworthy, as well. Many say the ruffles resemble the head covering that Mary Frances Clarke, the foundress of the BVM order, commonly wore. Found within the garden are the Lenten rose; lilies, a symbol of Mary; marigolds, which mean Mary’s gold; limestone from Dubuque, Iowa, the

home of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and water symbolizing the stream of Elijah at the original Mount Carmel, and the Mississippi River where the BVM motherhouse is located on their Mount Carmel bluff. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich and Bishop George J. Rassas blessed the garden during a special ceremony on August 30 for students, faculty and staff, board members, and donors. That day also happened to be near the feast day of St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners.

Carmel Catholic is continuing to enhance its Catholic identity across campus. In spring 2018, a one-of-akind statue of Jesus, also created by Timothy P. Schmalz, will welcome visitors as they enter the north end of campus.

Joanne Bader, Physics Teacher This past summer, Joanne Bader was accepted into the Teacher Research Associates (TRAC) program at Fermilab, a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, specializing in high-energy particle physics.
Joanne expressed an interest in particle physics research in her application for the program, and upon being accepted, was assigned to Anne Schukraft, an associate scientist in the neutrino division, who served as her mentor and supervisor. Her research team consisted of a postdoctoral scientist and a graduate student, whom Joanne assisted in their work. The team worked on the ICARUS project, a large

Summer Programs Provide Science Teachers With Unique Learning Experience

Marcella Linahan, Astronomy Teacher Marcella Linahan participated in two astronomy-based research opportunities this summer. She first spent a week at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia. Green Bank Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation and is home to many radio telescopes, the most famous being the Green Bank Telescope, which is the size of a football field. The observatory is in the National Radio Quiet Zone, an area of approximately 13,000 square miles near the state border between Virginia and West Virginia. There are no electromagnetic radiation sources here—no radio stations, microwaves, Wi-Fi devices (fit bit, apple watch, wireless mouse, etc.), cell phones, digital cameras, or gasoline cars (diesel only). Marcella spent a week observing and researching pulsars, which are spinning neutron stars. She even crossed paths with Carmel Catholic alumna Brandi Ropinski ’17, who was conducting her own research on scintillating pulsars.
Marcella Linahan at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia this summer Following her time at Green Bank, Marcella headed to the California Institute of Technology for one week of research and collaboration for the Astronomy Research Class she teaches at Carmel Catholic. Marcella worked under the direction of Research Scientist Dr. Luisa Rebull, and collaborated with fellow teachers at Breck School in Minnesota and Glencoe High in Oregon. Together, they researched eight star clusters that will be further investigated by students in the Astronomy Research Class.
“By engaging in authentic science research, I can bring this hands-on knowledge and excitement back to the classroom,” said Marcella. “I can make these opportunities available to the students by modifying and enhancing the research.” Currently, Carmel Catholic offers two authentic research opportunities for students: Pulsar Search Collaboratory and the Honors Astronomy Research Class. According to Marcella, these authentic experiences enable students to make valuable contributions to the science of Astronomy.
Rebecca Zurek ’21 Selected to Study at National Radio Observatory Rebecca Zurek ’21 had the opportunity to study at the National Radio Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia this past summer, where she was immersed in research activities. She was selected as one of 20 students nationwide through Physics Inspiring the Next Generation (PING). 6

An all-school Mass was held, followed by the blessing of our Mary of Mount Carmel Garden. Our guests also got to mingle with our students during a special lunch.
We are proud to welcome our class of 2021, which comes to us from 52 different middle schools. This year’s freshmen were the first to experience a new overnight retreat, which took place at Carmel Catholic from September 30 through October 1. Mike Fitzgibbons, Campus Minister, coordinated the retreat, which was led by 81 seniors. The goal was to welcome the freshmen and assist them with acquiring a sense of fitting in and getting to know the world of Carmel Catholic better. Various activities included time to pray together and reflect alone. Kambra French, Campus Minister, led a special prayer at the end of the evening in the Mary of Mount Carmel Garden. The retreat culminated with Liturgy for freshman families, which was celebrated by Fr. Glenn Snow, O.Carm.

Carmel Catholic Named CRS Global High School, Two Students Receive Global Advocate Award
Catholic Relief Services honored Carmel Catholic for valuable partnership and participation in the CRS Global High School Program as a Silver Level School for the 2016-17 academic year. The CRS Global High School Program strengthens Catholic high schools in the United States, encourages students into active global citizenship and engages the entire school community in the mission of Catholic social teaching. To become a Silver Level School, a school must meet certain criteria. Carmel Catholic’s service includes participating in the CRS Rice Bowl campaign, holding a rosary for world peace and having an active Catholic Social Justice Club. Additionally, two members of the class of 2017, Grace May and Brendan Mason, were named Global Advocates for their outstanding commitment to the poor and vulnerable overseas having served as an example to the school community of missionary discipleship, servant leadership and passion for global solidarity.
New Academic Resource Center Promotes Student Success
The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is the new hub for academic help and tutoring! Located in the upper level of the Information Commons, the ARC promotes student success by assisting students in specific course material, integrating study and learning strategies to promote independent learning. This support can include: one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in specific subject areas, and assisting students in acquiring knowledge of study skills and strategies. Both peer tutoring and adult tutoring are available. Since opening in September, there have been more than 100 students who have come in for tutoring in a variety of subjects, including ACT prep. Peer tutoring has been very successful as well. The ARC currently has 195 student tutors from Mu Alpha Theta math national honor society, and 165 National Honor Society student tutors. In addition to peer tutors, many faculty members have been tutoring before and after school. Assistant principal, Mrs. Burkhalter, has even come in to help students with their English papers!
Faculty Member Wins Heart of the School Award Mrs. Sharon Smogor, recently retired Social Studies faculty, was selected to receive the Archdiocese of Chicago’s 2017 Heart of Connection, Heart of the School Award. Recipients of this award recognize that their school is part of a greater community, and actively seek to build connections with the community and the school. 8
Mark Plaiss, CCHS Religious Studies Faculty, Authors Fourth Book Deacon Mark Plaiss, Carmel Catholic Religious Studies faculty member, has authored his fourth book, No End to The Search: Experiencing Monastic Life. According to Abbot Vincent Bataille of Marmion Abbey, “Mark Plaiss describes in detail the daily routine of a monastic’s life. He explains, as well, how the monastic values and routine have influenced his own life, a married layman in the teaching profession.”

In November, three Introduction to Engineering classes implemented their knowledge of the manufacturing process to create an assembly line of sandwiches. They chose to donate the fruits of their production lines to two local homeless shelters. Initially estimating that they would create 100 sandwiches to be donated, driven by the cause for which they were working, the classes ended up with more than 800 sandwiches to split between two shelters. According to their teacher, Mrs. Erin Major, the students enthusiastically augmented not only their understanding of a productive manufacturing process, but also how the mission of Carmel Catholic can extend beyond their religion classes.

The following seniors have been named Semifinalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program: Sarah Nelson, Madison Sasman, Theresa Thiel and Coral Wang. These academically talented students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered this spring. Additionally, eight seniors have been named Commended Students in the National Merit Program: Mary Brinkman, Jake Cerwin, Celia DeKeyser, Julia Elert, Scott Haseman, Rierson Johnson, Madeline Motzel and Calla Schultz.
Engineering Students Use Principles Learned in Class to Feed Homeless
Natalie Koenig ’18 Selected as an Illinois STEM Scholar Senior Natalie Koenig was selected to the Illinois 14th Congressional District STEM Scholars for the Class of 2018. Given her strong interest, achievements and recommendations, Natalie has demonstrated herself as a qualified candidate to advise U.S. Representative Randy Hultgren (IL-14) on the struggles students face in developing STEM knowledge and skills. Natalie’s leadership proves her commitment to discovering the solutions needed to not only improve educational outcomes for students in her community, but dramatically improve lives with the STEM solutions that are on the horizon.

Pro Football Championship Party
Join us on January 21, as the Carmel Catholic Athletic Club throws the annual Pro Football Championship Party. Open to anyone age 21 or older, partygoers watch the NFL Conference championship games on four huge screens in the Salvi Arena. This event is the CCAC’s biggest fundraiser. Grandparents’ Celebration
On October 21, Carmel Catholic hosted its premier event, Celebrate Carmel, with 300 attendees enjoying an unforgettable evening of cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, music, and auctions benefitting school programming and scholarships. The event was held on campus and showcased our students’ talents and accomplishments. The event was a huge success, with our students and faculty putting together dozens of gift baskets in addition to donated auction items making a huge difference in the funds that were raised.

One of Carmel Catholic’s wonderful traditions is our annual celebration of grandparents, which was held this year on September 10. Grandparents’ Celebration includes a special Sunday Mass at Carmel Catholic followed by a luncheon. Our students host their grandparents for the morning, and can take their grandparents on informal tours of the school after lunch.
Join us for Carmel Catholic’s largest annual fundraiser, featuring more than 50 bands, a casino, improv, theater, food and drinks. Each year in February, hundreds of Carmel Catholic volunteers transform the school into a spectacular fun-filled venue. Through the generous efforts of our students, their parents, Carmel alumni, and friends, Street Scenes contributes more than $350,000 each year to support the academic programs at Carmel Catholic. In August 2017, with bipartisan support, the House and Senate passed a comprehensive education funding bill that was signed into law by the governor. This law, the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program, will help low income students receive a quality Catholic education. The law includes a provision for tax credit scholarships, which provide strong incentives for donors to support non-public school scholarships for low-income students in the state. Illinois students from low-income families may use these new scholarships to attend a non-public school of their choice. These scholarships are funded by donors – individuals and corporations – who receive a credit on their Illinois state income tax as a result of their donation. More than 80 alumni and friends from Carmel Catholic, St. Viator, and Marian Catholic gathered at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville for a friendly competition of packing boxes of food on July 22. Ninety-seven boxes were packed, which is more than 58,000 healthy meals for children in need.

Helen Mitternight has ventured into a new Charleston-based podcast called “Keep It Juicy,” which offers lifestyle advice for people over the age of 50. The podcast can be found on iTunes.

Audrey Denecke has been a Leader Coach and Sr. Organizational Consultant with Right Management since 2004, a Board Member for Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge (bi-state, urban refuge) since 2012, and part of the Friends of Hackmatack Steering Committee since 2009.

Denise Hogstrom is now full time CEO of her own company, DH & Partners, L.L.C., in Libertyville.

Dennis Lambert has published his first novel, The Table, a work of inspirational fiction. Dennis and his wife Debbie (Retzke ’79) have lived in Phoenix since 2000. Dennis retired from a near thirtyyear career in the pharmaceutical industry in order to give more time for works of the Church and writing. Dennis was ordained a Deacon in the Diocese of Phoenix in 2014. Learn more about Dennis’ book at dennislambert-writes.com.
Joseph V. Salvi has been appointed a Circuit Court Judge for the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit, Lake County, Fifth Subcircuit. Judge Salvi’s appointment will take effect on January 2, 2018 and he will be seeking election for Circuit Court Judge in the November 2018 general election.

Sharon Bethke and her husband opened Special Strengths Fitness, a fitness center that provides personal training to children and adults with autism or related disorders.

Ted Bond Jr., real estate lawyer, returned to Carmel to speak to students about his career this school year.
Cardinal Cupich blessed our new Mary of Mount Carmel Garden near the main entrance on August 30. Michelle (Maginot) Adamski, Ed Conarchy, Julie Goodman attended the dedication ceremony.

Jackie Senger was presented a volunteer recognition award at a luncheon hosted by Women in Development North at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie.
Patrick A. Salvi II won a recordbreaking $148 million verdict on behalf of a young woman who was paralyzed when the pedestrian shelter she was standing next to outside of O’Hare International Airport collapsed onto her in 2015. The verdict represents a new Cook County personal injury record jury verdict.
Erik Liederbach returned to Carmel Catholic to speak to students on November 20. Erik is currently in medical school and returned to speak to Mrs. Gina Carmody’s science classes.

Dr. Natalie Strobach joined Johns Hopkins University in 2017 as their Director of Undergraduate Research.

Beth Herdmann has been elected president of Dayton Law’s Student Bar Association and was featured in an article for the University of Dayton School of Law.

Katie Herdmann graduated summa cum laude with her second Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from Marquette University.
2008 Eileen Looby Weber, horticulturist, returned to Carmel Catholic to speak to students about her career this school year.
Molly Fitzgibbons Sponseller, science teacher at Stevenson High School, received the Early Career Educator Award from the Illinois State Board of Education’s 43rd annual “Those Who Excel” Awards program.

Erica Massarelli has been honored with the Archdiocesan Heart of the Future award, which recognizes employees who have worked in education for three years or less and demonstrate outstanding excellence, leadership and service. She is a fourth-grade teacher at St. Mary’s School in Buffalo Grove. Christina Puzzolo has won the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, an initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that provides grants for research, study and teaching opportunities in more than 140 countries around the world. Puzzolo, MA International Affairs, will travel to the coastal Philippines to study seaweed farming, which is promoted as an “alternative livelihood strategy” that is economically secure and environmentally sustainable.

Nathan Lowe was awarded the prestigious Neil A. Armstrong Scholarship by the Department of the Air Force. Nathan is a Cadet in the Air Force ROTC studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University.
Milestones
Anthony Dinkel returned to Carmel to talk with AP Chemistry students about his research experiences during college. This past summer he had the opportunity to participate in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at UC San Diego. Anthony is interested in pursuing an MD/PhD after college. Anthony presented his findings to Carmel Catholic students and shared some advice on how to get involved in research.

Kelli Smith made the top female university choir at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The group is comprised of 70 undergraduate and graduate students, of which only three freshmen were accepted.
