AM was not created to intimidate and discourage the upcoming Grade 11 learners, but it aims to show what dedication, effort, sacrifice and delayed gratification can make. This learner’s digest features some of the many Enabling Task outputs by batch 2017-2018 Grade 11 learners of Ateneo de Davao Senior High School. It will serve as a guide on what outputs that the next batch of Grade 11 learners might be making during the 1st Semester from Prelims up to PreFinals. ETs are grouped according to their term and have their respective description. Slacking off is not an option, and here in Ateneo, excellence is key. Learners, who strive for excellence have gone way beyond their sleeping time just to make these outputs, have developed their sense of creativity and critical thinking skills, thus with the title 1 AM, it symbolizes the learners’ blood, sweat, and tears throughout the making of each output; an obstacle course that every learner must go through. Magis is what completes the DNA of an Atenean, ETs are the epitome of tasks that an Atenean must do as they progress exponentially. Our hearts bleed blue that shouts our full effort into every challenge we encounter and overcome.

ENABLING TASK 1 InstaMag The content of the Enabling Task #1 consists of the learner’s inspirations and motivation to take the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand. They had a variety of reasons, ranging from their father to even the film “Iron Man. They are also motivated by the idea of a challenge, among other things.
s a child I wanted to be many things, but an engineer was not one of them. Whenever an adult asked me what I wanted to be, I always had answered something different evert time: a singer, a dancer, at one point even a lawyer. Yet Engineering still had not crossed my mind, at least not until I realized that I had to sort out my life priorities. I was probably in sixth grade when I took one good look at my father and had an epiphany that would decide my path.
My dad is a licensed mechanical engineer from UM, and he is just one of the many engineers in my family. Dad was the one who got me into watching documentaries. It was only then that I decided to be just like my dad and even more: to be the first engineer in my generation, as well as the first female one in my line.

e all know that everyone’s inspiration would be their family or loved ones, even me too, but one thing that got me taking STEM is because of chemistry. Some would say that chemistry is difficult but, it is beautiful. It may be difficult and can be nervewracking but learning is practice. Chemistry was really hard for me way back in junior high school. I studied with my friends everytime before proceeding to a quiz. It was really difficult, but I wanted to be challenged. Taking up engineering is my greatest dream, specifically civil engineering, but I have come to like chemistry even more. Now that I am here, I want to pursue everything and do what it takes to be an engineer.

he film “Iron Man” got my 8 year-old mind to wonder about the world of machines. As a child, I was gullible to the world of fiction. One of the more memorable parts of the film was when Tony starts building his suit. Thaw was when I really got interested in machines. Growing up, now with the protagonist’s influence, I would build all kinds of small gadgets, or I would take things apart to see how they work and put it back together again. I would also spend a lot of time playing with my Grandfather’s stereo system back home, fidgeting with the wires. I still do that sometimes, but when I got into my later years of high school, I got busy with other things. By choosing STEM Pre-Engineering, I can continue my love for fidgeting and tinkering when I got older. So just like Tony Stark, I aim to be a builder, and a tinkerer of sorts.

his is a photo of my house. It was taken last 2014. It has an area of 226 m2, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, a dining room and 2 kitchens, one of which is a dirty kitchen. My house itself was one of the reasons why I took STEM as my strand. Every time we visit, I got even more excited. Seeing the house progressing was a wonderful thing to watch and I thought to myself that I wanted to do the same thing. To be able to construct a building with a good structure, strong foundation and a wonderful faรงade, I would call it an accomplishment.
ENABLING ENABLING TASK TASK 2 1 Word Power InstaMag Learners are given a task to compare and contrast two different words. They are divided into groups. The teacher assigned them a topic which they would compare and contrast. The learners accomplished this task by brainstorming and researching on the similarities and differences of the assigned words. The objective of this Enabling Task is for learners to effectively differentiate two different words or topics. -Luke Matthew Umusig

oth psychologists and psychiatrists study the human mind, emotions and thoughts. However, there are differences in between the two professions. The primary difference would be the educational requirements. A psychologist starts as an undergraduate major in psychology and after graduating needs a master’s degree and a doctorate of philosophy in psychology. A psychiatrist after graduating, must go through a medical school and has different training that involves medicinal cures. Another difference would be the application of studies. Psychologists focus on behavioral status and the link between human emotion and mental state. A psychiatrist focuses more on the neurochemistry and the biology that is involved when it comes to human behavior. Regarding professional limitations and capabilities, they also have difference. A psychiatrist is allowed to prescribe medicinal cures for mental and emotional sicknesses. A psychologist on the other hand, can only study and determine human problems that concern mental & emotional state. Both have different roles and approaches, but at the end of the day, they both work together in order to achieve the wellness of the state of the human mind. 8

n the field of Genetics DNA and RNA are closely related. However, one is often confused for the other if the terms are discussed with those not working in the field. Prior to discussing their differences though, it must be pointed out that both are found in the nucleus. This in turn explains how both are acids made by nucleotides.
DNA, also known as Deoxyribonucleic Acid, is the genetic information of all living organisms. Its main purpose is to transfer genetic information from generation to generation. First identified and isolated by Friedrich Miescher. Its structure was discovered by James Watson and Francis Crick. It is also double standard and spirally twisted to produce regular helix. DNA’s base present on it are Adenine, Guanine, Thynine and Cytosine. In contrast, RNA or Ribonucleic Acid, is a polymer with a ribose and Phosphate. It also has four nitrogenous bases, Adenin, Guanine, and Cytosine but it has uracil and doesn’t have thymine. RNA’s function is to direct synthesis of protein in the body. However, RNA cannot replicate itself unlike the DNA. RNA translated and transcribes messages for forming polypeptides. Despite the numerous differences between the two, it can be said that both are absolutely critical to the foundation of living things. Both may seem to be physically insignificant. Yet in fact it is quite the opposite. Without the both of them, life as we know it, would probably be very different.

here are many types of rocks that can be found in outer space. Two of these are identified as meteors and asteroids. They are composed of the same materials which are minerals, dust, rock and metal, and in addition, they are not large enough to be deemed planets. Meteors are transient fiery streaks in the sky produced by a meteoroid entering to Earth’s atmosphere. They may seem big but are actually the size of pebbles. It is mostly known as shooting stars because they fall to the Earth from space beyond the moon, burning up from atmospheric fiction and creating a brilliant but usually very brief trail of light in the atmosphere. Asteroids are usually found between Mars and Jupiter, which is scientifically called Asteroid Belt. It is a large rocky or icy debris flying space. It was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi who discovered the asteroids.

ENABLING TASK 3
Letter of Concern A letter of concern is a type of informal composition wherein you can write your personal matters on an issue to be addressed to a certain person or authority. You are to put forth or expound your complains, interest or firm plainly and in an apothegmatical manner. Also, it includes information and offers a solution, stressing your objectives to look for a conclusion and not to accumulate the situation. In this Enabling Task, learners were tasked to identify an issue present in the senior high school department. After which, they were to write a letter to the authority in concern about it and offer a solution for the identified issue. - Amir Andrei Cayago

Mr. Ricardo P. Enriquez Director Ateneo de Davao University – Senior High School
Dear Mr. Enriquez: Dear Mr. Enriquez: We would like to voice out our concern over the long lines in the main cafeteria, especially in the 12:10-12:40 shift. Knowing that the learner population is more than anticipated, there are overlapping schedules between the College and Senior High School, causing crowding in the stalls. This results in less time for the learners to eat their meal, some learners are going to class without lunch, and tardiness to the next class. This is an issue for the learners who choose to eat in the main cafeteria. We would like to propose a solution to alter the schedules of the College and Senior High learners so that the given lunch times would not overlap and contribute to the congestion, since both departments’ lunch schedules are mixes as of now. We are looking forward to your positive response regarding this matter. Sincerely,
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam! We would like to raise out concern about the overpricing of products in the satellite canteens. We see this as a problem because the prices are not student-friendly due to the fact that not all students have enough allowance to afford the product. Also, there are students who stay in dorms who have budgets and because of the overpricing, their budgets are cut short. Moreover, the prices of the goods can consume a student’s daily allowance. One meal consumes almost half of a student’s allowance. We suggest that the prices in the satellite canteens should be studentfriendly. Making the prices student-friendly will help many students to save especially those who stay in dorms and have monthly budgets. Also, doing the latter will increase the number of sales and profit compared with what the institution gets with their current pricing with the products. Looking forward to your positive response regarding this matter.

MIDTERM
Dear Mr. Enriquez: Greetings! The Ateneo de Davao Senior High School has approximately 8,000 learners. In fact, some of them are scholars and indigenous people. It is evident that most learners need to budget their daily expenses. To point out, we have the trouble of buying food in the cafeteria and all of the food stalls since we consider them as expensive in general. In addition, we observed that the prices of the food are beyond the suggested retail price. We would like to address this issue about the prices of the food in the cafeteria and food stalls. Thus, we humbly suggest to lower the prices of the food to make it budget-friendly for all learners. By that, we propose a solution of lessening the monthly rental rate of all food and drink stalls inside the university of at least 10%. By this, the percentage of the food prices that is dependent on the rental rate will be lessened. The learners’ daily expenses will be decreased and this also makes the university more learner-friendly. We look forward to your favorable response and thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

ENABLING TASK 4
Advertisement C ritique Ads... Ads everywhere. Advertisements are of great importance for the business world. Most means of communication to the potent customers around the world is on paper or a digital screen and the product and services that are promoted there must be attractive enough to grasp the attention of a reader. In this enabling task the learners will analyze the advertisement’s content and identify the claims and assertions used. - Thea Angelika Chavez

T
he purpose of the advertorial is to let people know about their product. Since a lot are physically active, especially the athletes, the products will be able to meet their needs in various activities. Like most of the advertisements, they make use of modal verbs such as “must” and “should,” as well as sophisticated hyperbolical statements. Being a bit exaggerating with your product is an effective way to draw some people in. They help convince people to but their products, it would seem that it is really worth buying for as they are customers think that it matches with the words they use to describe it. Claims of fact and value, as well as basic assertion were presented in the advertorial. These were then supported with testimonies of well-known sports personalities and characteristics of the products that served as support or evidence. The use of claims and assertions was very important in convincing your target customers in buying the product. There are no suspicious arguments in the advertisement. It was explained well and deeply, they cited each benefits, it has specific details which can only be found in their product, and their statements were more objective and factual that would probably attract the buyers. When advertising, it makes customers aware of the product or service. At the same time, it starts to create an image of the company, which means that convincing customers to buy the product will give the company a good image of itself. Advertising requires good persuasive approaches, and that involves a combination of claims, assertions, evidences. Just like an argument, these are needed to draw their attention and make them believe in it more.

he advertisement promotes Tokyo Bubble Tea, the restaurant or café which prides itself in its milk tea and bubble sinkers. It primarily targets adolescents, though it may also apply to children and their families. It can be seen that they use attractive and flowery words to appeal to the audience’s senses, particularly their sense of taste. There are numerous claims made in the advertisement, most of which can maybe sorted into either claims of fact or value. The claims of fact are mostly information concerning their business and history. The claims of value are mostly the style by which they present themselves, particularly when they say that their bubble milk tea is the best around. For assertions, it can also be pointed out that the claims of value referenced above may be considered as basic assertions. This serves the purpose of promoting their product and convincing the audience to visit and try the place out. There aren’t any suspicious arguments, however, there are contentious and objectionable ones mainly due to being an advertisement about a restaurant.
Rapid Loss
Art Raymund N. Ampoloquio
The purpose of the advertorial is to inform and convince people to but this weight loss product called Rapid Loss. Its target audience are consumers who want to lose weight. This can be observed in the persuasive language used in the advertorial that directly attract customers who want to experience rapid weight loss. The advertorial used persuasive techniques such as rhetorical questions and plain folks. Rhetorical question was used in the advertisement because it asks the readers something in a way that makes him/her feel positive about the product. It also used plain folks because it used images of people who are the “target” of the advertisement. The advertisement also presented claims, specifically, claims of fact and claims of value. They claim that the product has inulin, a molecule that increases a person’s level of satiety, and sodium alginate, a claim which can be verified by Science. Furthermore, claim of value was also present when it stated, “It’s refreshing, delicious drink.” Assertions elevated the purpose of the advertisement which is to convince consumers to purchase the product because the assertions made it more persuading. However, one thing that is questionable in the ad were statements which contradicts scientific studies. One was, “The secret to weight loss is eating less.” This statement is contradictory to an experiment conducted in the University of Geneva which proved that eating less is not the answer to weight loss, the right way towards losing weight is eating properly and exercising. Lastly, the language and the images used in the advertorial is effective and wise. The target audience of the product will be convinced to try it because of the effective use 19 of persuasive language, claims, and assertions in the advertorial.

Choose Your Own Adventure
Video Games are one of the forms of entertainment in our generation. A famous genre of video games is “Choose Your Own Adventure”. In this Enabling Task, learners have created a version of the game using Microsoft PowerPoint. The “Choose Your Own Adventure” storyline goes as you, the player, choose from a group of situations to continue the story. Your decision makes the story unique in a way that is specific to your choices. By using Hypertexts and Hyperlinks in Microsoft PowerPoint, the learners can make different scenarios leading to different endings, hence, choosing your own adventure. - Miguel Augusto Lacson

It is a written document with the purpose of convincing the audience that a certain opinion is valid and defensible. On the Pre-Finals, the learners were tasked to make a position paper of an article written by P Gardiner titled "A virtue ethics approach to moral dilemmas in medicine," a moral case is presented along with the author's personal stand, challenging the learner's viewpoint on the issue. The main objective of this task is to showcase the learners' standpoint on a relevant and timely topic such as P Gardiner's article. - Jerimoth Perez

In a paper written by P Gardiner entitled “A virtue ethics approach to moral dilemmas in medicine” last 2003, a moral case was presented which challenges a doctor’s stand. It is a standard Jehovah’s Witness case on which a patient refused a blood transfusion that would ensure his survival but instead asked for a riskier treatment. He made a thorough analysis of the situation and the background involved in it and arrived with the decision of respecting the patient’s wishes. The article was well written and is on point. He was able to establish a strong argument, due to the fact that he achieved to give relevant and essential information about the controversial issue. We therefore support his position of respecting the patient’s decision. In the field of medicine, there are medical codes that one needs to follow which includes respect for autonomy or the patient’s right to refuse or choose a treatment. Respecting the patient’s wishes also characterizes virtues like compassion, trustworthiness and discernment. This course of action is also supported by the 8th Commandment because actions such as acting against the patient’s wish or without his consent is a form of lying. It is acting against our neighbors and breaking our promise to our patient and to the code followed by doctors. In addition, acting against the patient’s wish would disobey the 7th Commandment in a way that the doctor does blood transfusion wherein the blood that was taken from another patient is a form of stealing. In his patient’s belief, blood represents life, therefore it is sacred to God and transferring it would mean crossing the line because the doctor is not authorized to use one’s blood to save another patient’s life. As the doctor grabs the opportunity to take one’s blood to transfer it to another person, it also shows that the doctor is taking the patient’s chance to prove and strengthen his faith which should be respected. Others may argue that doctors should be concerned with preserving life and improving the wellbeing of patients therefore he or she should do whatever he or she thinks is best for him or her which is for that situation, to give the patient a blood transfusion. Although that is sensible, it would miss the point that ‘well-being’ doesn’t just concern the physical aspect but also the mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects which the doctor should all consider. The guilt and dismay the patient would experience after stepping on his or her belief should be also taken into account. What about the guilt the doctor would experience if the patient would die because of not giving him a blood transfusion? That moral burden may be tremendous but they are trained on how to tolerate such risks and uncertainty. After a careful discernment, he or she will soon realize that what he or she did was the right thing to do and will soon not worry. We believe that respecting the patient’s decision is the best course of action that a doctor should take. But before he or she goes on with the alternative treatment, he or she should make an effort to fully inform, advise, and guide the patient in order for him or her to make the right decision. The doctor should not be the one to make the decision. P Gardiner managed to explain this further in his paper. We would recommend others to read it for them to have a deeper understanding of the example 33 situation.
