Spring/ Summer 2008
Welcome to the Table ! We’ve always thought of the table as more than just a place where we come to eat. It’s the center of every home. It’s where our brightest ideas are shared and where our best stories are told. It’s where we live our lives and where we gather together the things that matter most. In 2006, we set out to collaborate with a new generation of designers and some of the world’s finest master artisans to create thoughtfully designed objects for the table. Over the past two years, we’ve traveled to 14 different countries, visited countless studios and workshops, met new people, seen new places and learned a couple of things along the way. We’ve learned that the beauty of an object is a reflection of the thought and care of those who made it. And that knowing the story of the creative process and the people involved means appreciating what you hold in your hands even more. With our launch in Spring 2008, we’ve had a chance to step back and see Teroforma for what it has become. It’s not just about making tableware – it’s about bringing people together. It’s a place where old-world techniques are combined with contemporary ideals, where understated elegance is the result of intentional simplicity, and where uncommon quality can become a part of every day. Whether it’s designers and artisans from around the world or friends and family from around the corner, the simple act of gathering together makes great things possible. So, welcome to our table – we’ve set a place for you. Andrew & Anna Hellman Co-founders

Luxury For Everyday Use We believe that beauty is appropriate for any occasion and that real luxury is about the value of making your own statement with a sense of casual, effortless style. We believe that good design must be both usable and useful and that it’s our obligation to keep this in mind while we strive to make things beautiful. Our products reflect these beliefs and here’s what it means for you. Shapes in different materials. We have designed a simple and self-referencing assortment of tableware within several shape ranges – Avva, Ekke, Issi, Oyyo and Ullu. If you like a plate or bowl in one shape, chances are there are glasses that reference the same shape. Keeping it consistent or setting up a contrast is all down to your own taste and style. Consistent colors. We decided to keep colors tonally consistent. That means that when you see a blue or a pink or a green that you like in one material or pattern, it’ll work together with the same color in another material or pattern. Keeping a consistency, or layering for a gentle contrast: it’s up to you. You can’t go wrong. Pattern as decoration not domination. We believe that simple is best and that when basic shapes are offered in beautiful materials, there really isn’t much need for anything else. Our patterns apply our carefully selected and consistent colors in ways that highlight shape and material instead of trying to dominate them. It’s like jewelry: less is definitely more. Care. It’s in the way we think about things, in the way our designers approach their ideas and in the way our artisans treat their materials, techniques and traditions. So it’s only right that it should be in our minds when we think of the way that our customers will use our products. Most of Teroforma’s product range is dishwasher or washing machine safe. Some things prefer a quick rinse by hand and, in the case of our linens, a bit of extra effort to make them their best. There’s a certain zen in caring for things by hand and an enormous feeling of relief when you know you don’t have to.

Our Glass There are a couple of things that make our glasses special. First, they’re mouthblown and finished by hand. All of them. Every piece. From start to finish. By glassblowers who have trained for at least 12 years before earning the right to call themselves masters. To put that into perspective, it takes about the same amount of time to become a surgeon. Second, they’re made from non-lead crystal which is notable because it is a harder material to work with than the lead variety and therefore requires a greater degree of skill on the part of the glassblower. The absence of lead in the process (apart from residual trace amounts which are impossible to extract) also means that production has less of an impact on the environment. Third, tradition. Some of the glassblowers we work with in Slovenia and the Czech Republic, where all of our glass is made, will proudly tell you that they stand in front of the same furnace that their fathers stood in front of, and their fathers before them. The youngest glassworks we have partnered with has been in continuous operation since 1794. Yes, the youngest one. The oldest, since the 1660s. That kind of tradition shows up in the details. The cut rims, the single-pulled stems, the seamless joints, the gently fading color. Some things can be improved with machines and technology. Some things just don’t need to be.

We’ve always referred to them as the “Goodnight/Goodmorning” carafe & tumbler. Perfect for bedside or tableside.
Ekke Carafe & Tumbler NON-LEAD CRYSTAL
Designed by Roman Vrtiska (Czech Republic) Mouthblown at Kvetna Glassworks (Czech Republic) Living in Prague, a city where funky juice bars stand next to gothic cathedrals, designer Roman Vrtiska knows a thing or two about the combination of old and new. The Ekke Carafe & Tumbler is a modern reinterpretation of a classic design from the vaults at Kvetna Glassworks. Each of the two mouthblown, non-lead crystal pieces are designed to fit together: cap becomes cup becomes cap. Incidentally, we made sure to design the Ekke Small Tumbler (see p. 9) with the carafe in mind – it fits just as well as the one you see here. The carafes and tumblers prefer a quick rinse by hand.
Inspiration everywhere...Designer Roman Vrtiska finds inspiration in architecture, painting, sculpture and music. An entire wall in his studio is papered in his favorite album covers.

Avva Lens Tumblers & Pitcher NON-LEAD CRYSTAL Designed by Thea Mehl (Norway) Mouthblown at Kvetna Glassworks (Czech Republic)
The Avva Lens tumblers and pitcher use complementary shapes in mouthblown non-lead crystal to offer a complete expression. The small tumblers are perfect for neat whisky or cold sake, the medium tumblers for mixed drinks or table wine. The alternating closed and open rims are subtle enough to be playful, but pronounced enough to make a difference. The large tumbler is perfect for water or beer while the pitcher ties the whole series together. Made entirely by hand, each piece has a small lens cut into the bottom to reference the fact that they are polished using a special Japanese compound usually reserved for optical lenses. Remarkably durable, the tumblers and pitcher are dishwasher safe.
Master Glassblower Antonín Toman gamely demonstrates to Avva Lens designer Thea Mehl that being able to ‘think it’ and being able to ‘do it’ are two very different things. Kvetna Glassworks (Czech Republic), May 2007.

Single-pulled stems flow from the base of the “balloon” to the “foot” in one seamless piece of serious master craftsmanship.
Tihomir Tomic MASTER GLASSMAKER It’s not every day you meet someone whom others refer to, in all seriousness, as “the master.” It kind of brings to mind images of the Jedi Council or a Bruce Lee movie. The nonchalance dissipates almost as fast as the time zones when the journey to meet a master glassmaker involves flying from New York to Vienna to Zagreb, then driving through Croatia into Slovenia, past the vineyards and medieval churches until finally arriving in front of Rogaska Glassworks, where they’ve been making some of the world’s finest crystal for over 340 years. After all the globe-trotting, when you stand in front of Tihomir Tomic and he says, with a smile, “all I care about is the glass,” it all makes sense. Tomic (pronounced TOHM-eech) has been developing his craft for nearly 40 years, first as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and then as an apprentice to Raoul Goldoni, one of the 20th century’s finest glass masters and the former Art Director at Rogaska. In 1969, Goldoni selected Tomic as his protégé, and over the next two decades, they worked together on an array of projects, from those at Rogaska to collaborations with some of the world’s most renowned art glass studios in Murano, Italy. As the current Art Director at Rogaska, Tomic has succeeded his former master and explains that when he looks over his career he realizes that most of what he knows wasn’t taught. “The technical, you learn in school. However, you must use your technique to bring out what is inside you. It is sometimes unfair, because your technique may be perfect but either there’s something inside or there isn’t.” In the small studio behind his house, containing a furnace that he built himself out of spare parts and discarded machines, he experiments with new design ideas and new ways of working with glass. It isn’t fancy, but there he is surrounded by the things that matter most: the pictures of his family above his drafting desk, a few sails, booms and surfboards stretched out across rafters in the ceiling and, of course, his glass.
Tomic offers some insights into “hot glassing” during our visit to Slovenia in May 2007.

Martini Glass NON-LEAD CRYSTAL Pitcher & Stirrer NON-LEAD CRYSTAL
All designed by Tihomir Tomic (Croatia) Mouthblown at Rogaska Glassworks (Slovenia) If shaken, it’s a Bradford. If stirred, it’s a Martini. Whichever direction you choose to go, our singlepull, mouthblown, non-lead crystal is a perfect choice. Starting with the classic glass design, we extended a line here or there to give it a bit more volume because, well, why not? Reassuringly substantial, the pitcher is made from mouthblown, non-lead crystal. While the final test results are yet to come through, we are beginning to suspect that the stirrer is not actually a magic wand after all. Bummer. But so long as you keep trying every once in a while, so will we. All pieces are dishwasher safe.

Our Bone China Teroforma’s bone china is made exclusively by Asianera Ceramics Studio, a small company that specializes in handcrafted, hand-painted fine bone china that combines western designs with traditional eastern techniques. Located about 60 miles southeast of Beijing, Asianera was founded 12 years ago by Chinese-American Grace Liu together with Tangshan-based artist Jian Ping Li. And when the vast majority of their competitors rushed to embrace the low-quality, high-volume approach, Grace and JP decided to walk confidently 180 degrees in the other direction. We came to Asianera in February 2007 with two very specific designs concepts – several shape ideas and our Petal and Fern patterns. When we first spoke with Grace and JP, they were really excited about the new shapes and assured us that it was just the thing for them. When it came to the patterns, a hint of caution crept into Grace’s voice: “we’re not quite sure how to do this yet, but give us a few days and we’ll figure it out.” Two days later, Grace called us back to say that she and JP had brainstormed with some of the senior artists in their studio and devised a new technique especially for our patterns, involving rice paper stencils and a layered sponge painting method. Totally new as far as they were aware. They were excited to try. Our Fern and Petal patterns were imagined by Maria Lintott in England and brought to life by a room of people on the other side of the world who had the courage to see possibility in challenge. And for us, that is what it’s all about.

Thomas Allen
CERAMICS DESIGNER
When designer and Teroforma’s Head of Product Development, Thea Mehl, visited Thomas Allen at his studio in Stoke-on-Trent last year, she felt designer envy. Thomas is kind of a prodigy when it comes to shape. He talks about curves and transitional forms as if walking amongst them in a landscape, as if he was born understanding how they relate to each other and the space they occupy. His enthusiasm for his work could make anyone jealous, designer or not, because to be that passionate about something is truly enviable. The fact that his talent matches his passion is evident as you wander around his studio past a vast array of beautiful ceramic plates, cups, and tea pots. Molds for new explorations are on shelves and next to desks. Drawings and sketches are pinned to boards and cupboards and doors. Every available surface seems to speak about the work that goes on around it and the ideas that fill the air. But out of all the wonderful, chaotic possibility, it was a simple flowerpot, sitting on a windowsill, that became the starting point for the Oyyo range that Thomas would later create for us. The flower pot’s flowing shapes, a round base lifted into an oval top, became the inspiration for the range’s foundation piece: the Tea Pot. From this starting point, Thomas developed plates, bowls, jugs and mugs – all encompassing the lightness and fluidity of his original design. The result is the Oyyo range of bone china dinnerware - a forceful statement in restraint and in the subtle, elegant connections between shapes that look as if the designer was born knowing that they would turn out just as they have. 28

Oyyo White BONE CHINA Designed by Thomas Allen (England) Handcrafted at Asianera Studio (Northern China) The Oyyo bone china series is a study in balance and understatement. As the basis for the entire Oyyo range of products, we gave extra careful consideration to perfecting the minute details: the curve on each bowl, the slightly tapered rim of each plate, the perfect balance of body, spout and handle in the tea pot. In fact, we rendered 9 different variations of the mug handle until we were satisfied that we could do no better. Effortlessly elegant either in white or with complementary pieces from the Oyyo Petal range. Dishwasher safe.

Maria Lintott CERAMICS DESIGNER Creating the Petal & Fern Patterns
In search of inspiration for a pattern that would capture a sense of movement and growth, Royal College of Art graduate and proprietor of her own ceramics studio, English designer Maria Lintott headed to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew to have a closer look at what nature could provide. Using sketches and photographs, Maria experimented with layering color over color to create a dimensional effect for the resulting Petal & Fern patterns. Just like the leaves and flower petals Maria observed, the hand-painted patterns are harmonious while individually unique. Each figure in the pattern is individually hand-painted onto Thomas Allen’s Oyyo bone china range by the artists at Asianera before glaze firing. Jian Ping Li MASTER PAINTER Hand-painting at Asianera Jian Ping Li, Art Director of Asianera Studios, is a master painter and ceramicist. His passion for both the tradition of his craft and the ways that it can be applied to the future extend to his approach to the artists he employs. Under his nurturing direction, JP and his growing studio of artists employ a traditional Chinese brush stroke known as gong-bi. As his business partner Grace Liu puts it: “Technology can almost replicate a hand-painted look nowadays, but the true artistry of hand-decorated and hand-painted china can never be imitated because the human touch and spirit of the artist will always be present in each and every brushstroke and in each unique piece of work.” Each figure in the pattern is individually hand-painted onto JP’s Avva bone china range by the artists at Asianera before glaze firing. Avva Fern BONE CHINA
Shape by Jian Ping Li (Northern China) Pattern by Maria Lintott (England) Handcrafted at Asianera Studio (Northern China) Like the Oyyo Petal series, Maria Lintott’s Fern pattern began as a series of photos from an afternoon stroll through Kew Gardens outside London. Once back in her studio, Maria began layering elements and colors from the photos to create a pattern which is at once naturally derived and graphically innovative. Working together with shape designer Jian Ping Li, Maria plays with the role of the “rim” in the Avva shape design. Elements of the hand-painted Fern pattern meander across the rim or just graze its edge. Dishwasher safe.

Inspiration everywhere. Color and texture shot by Louisa Taylor in Cardiff, March 2007.
Our Stoneware We first met English ceramics designer Louisa Taylor through a mutual friend in 2007. When we approached her about collaborating on a series of simple, refined stoneware designs that would highlight the natural beauty of the material with just a hint of color, she was eager to have the chance and the time to work on something “simple.” A few weeks passed and we received a call from her saying that she thought she had an idea -inspired by a trip she had taken to Cardiff in Wales and the ambient combinations of color and texture she noticed during a walk along the bay. After searching high and low for a stoneware manufacturer who could combine efficient, conscientious production with the inclusion of handcrafted techniques, we struck gold when we met Chockchai Lertiendumrong. In his 2nd generation family-owned studio just outside Bangkok, he carries on the vision that his father had when he founded Eastern Chinaware decades ago. The company recently received the ISO 14001 distinction for environmentally sound production processes. The resulting Ullu Line series of stoneware that was designed by Louisa in London and brought to life by Chockchai in his father’s factory in Bangkok reflects the simple things clean, honest design; rich, clear colors; and a bit of a conscience to go along with your morning bowl of cereal. Not a bad way to start the day.

Louisa Taylor CERAMICS DESIGNER Louisa Taylor is one of the most promising young ceramics designers in the UK. Shortly after graduating from London’s Royal College of Art, Louisa started her own pottery business where she creates pieces for gallery shows around the city. Louisa uses her interest in the subtle contrasts between colors to create ceramics that “bring a sense of grace and presence to the tabletop.” A simple line around the rim of our stoneware items, the Line pattern was designed by Louisa during a trip to Cardiff Bay in Wales. She found in the vibrant port city a riot of colors and textures, old and new, grit and gloss. The result is a series of stoneware objects with a combination of matte and glazed finishes, natural colors and brilliant white. And to set it off, Louisa developed 4 different color accents for the Line pattern:

Linen
42
Flax Field, somewhere The in Europe in the timeflax where thebloom flowers would blossom, flowers of the plant only once a year. 2007
Our Linen Grown, harvested and woven into fabric by Europeans (mainly along the Northern Atlantic and Baltic coasts) since the beginning of re corded civilization, flax - from which linen derives - has been and is still used in a wide array of products and processes. Our co-founder, and the designer of our linen range, Anna Hellman, was drawn to the natural beauty of truly high quality, densely woven linen and what we could do with it in a range of carefully chosen, simple colors. We work with Linas Nordic in Panevezys, Lithuania, a member of the Masters of Linen guild and a recipient of certifications from both OEKO-Tex and ISO for ecologically-responsible production and socially-responsible management. When we visited in May 2007, it became immediately apparent that, in Panevezys, linen rules the day. We ate from linen tablecloths, dabbed our mouths with linen napkins, slept on linen sheets, “retired” for the evening in linen bathrobes, brushed aside linen curtains to open the window and see linen hanging from clotheslines across the town. I suppose you get the idea. There’s a reason for it. Linen is amazingly ab sorbent and will withstand and actually improve with use and cleaning while holding its shape. It also takes far less active cultivation than cotton, thus minimizing the amount of fertilizer required to return an adequate yield, and produces a number of useful by-products in the refining process - linseed oil and pulp (actually used in the making of US dollars) to name a few. Poetically, as if to call attention to its practical and metaphorical beauty, the flax plant blooms only one day a year. In case you missed it, we hope our linens do a good job of capturing the essence. 43
Linen LONG FIBER FLAX
Designed by Anna Hellman (Sweden) Made by Linas Nordic (Lithuania) Made solely of highest quality, European long fiber flax, our linen is densely woven to the standards of the European Masters of Linen guild by Linas Nordic in Lithuania. They have been recognized by both ISO and OEKO-Tex for their commitments to both human and environmental ecology. Our linens are mechanically conditioned, avoiding the unnecessary use of harmful chemicals. Available in 13 tonally harmonic colors and 5 finishing options as shown below. Our linen is washing-machine safe (line dry, iron damp) and, as with all linen, retains its strength while softening with regular use.

Anna Dabrowski in her studio (Germany), February 2008
Our Felt If it’s true that design is more about evolution than it is about revolution, nobody bothered to tell Anna Dabrowski. A Berlin-based photographer and designer, Anna has a super-interpretive mind and a palpable sense of adventure about her. Her energy level is off the charts and, when we heard that she counted among her favorite things sky-diving and table-dancing (the fun-filled, exuberant, fully-clothed kind, thank you very much) as well as her large and growing spoon collection, we knew she was for us. So we put her in a room with some felt -generally thought of as kind of a boring material -to see what would happen. Voila! Coasters & Trivets! Our felt products are made for us in Allentown, Pennsylvania by Aetna Felt to Anna’s designs using 100% merino wool felt. Felt is a dense fabric made by tufting and meshing natural wool fibers in a process oddly called...felting! A soft, rich material, felt is naturally stain and water resistant as a result of its density. Used for all sorts of industrial applications, it was for many years and still is used to make gentlemen’s hats. The expression “mad as a hatter”came from the practice of applying mercury to a felt hat to aid in its finishing for wear. Catch was, it was applied by hand. Not good. And not anymore (and certainly not in our designs!) While we would never go as far as to say that anybody involved in the making of our range of felt coasters and trivets is mad, if you are ever sky-diving and you see someone streak past you clutching a handful of spoons, we suggest you keep a respectful distance. 47

Maple, Elm & Oak Coasters & Trivets MERINO WOOL FELT Designed by Anna Dabrowski (Germany) Made by Aetna Felt (USA)
Made of 100% merino wool felt, our coasters come in two leaf shapes: Oak (6 point) and Elm (9 point). Combined with our Maple trivets, each design is available in green/blue, purple/pink or orange/red. While the natural density of felt makes it relatively durable, spills should be wiped away quickly and gently cleaned with mild soap and water.

Stone
50
Our Stone Stone is a beautiful material with as many different appearances as there are people to appreciate them. When we decided to include stone in our product range, we had some stipulations. The stone would have to be locallysourced and locally-finished. It would need to be simply processed. And we would do very little to alter its look or modify its naturallyoccurring variations in color and texture. We borrowed the concept of Whisky Stones from Scandinanvia where they have been produced in either soapstone or granite for hundreds of years. We can find nobody to attribute them to, so the design credit below is a bit of an inside joke. They’re rocks. Made out of stone. Into cubes. Not very conceptually innovative. But they work great. As you can read about below, they are perfect for putting a slight chill into the bones of small quantities of high-quality hooch – single malt whisky, cold sake, bourbon, rye. We used soapstone because of its relative softness (for all the scientists, it registers only a 1 on Mohs Scale). All our stone is sourced from quarries in Vermont and processed into Whisky Stones by the oldest continually operational soapstone company in the US.
Whisky Stones SOAPSTONE
Designed by Andrew Hellman (USA) Made by Vermont Soapstone (USA) If you’re like us, you appreciate the fact that some drinks need no diluting. Our Whisky Stones are made for us in Perkinsville, Vermont and, when properly chilled, are a perfect addition to your next single malt. They cool things down just a touch without daring to come between you and the dram of your dreams. Simply rinse after use and store in the freezer for next time. Steel
52
Our Stainless Steel While it seems that men and women buy dinnerware and glassware in equal numbers, studies show that women are disproportionately drawn to linens and decorative accents while men gravitate towards cutlery and flatware. Maybe it’s the fact that flatware, when it’s done right, kind of feels like a small cluster of precision tools: perfectly balanced, honed to an edge. So, for all those who live in Precision Tool Nerd-ville (and there are a few in our office), here are the stats: Stainless steel is an alloy known for its strength, durability and, not surprisingly, stain resistance. Developed over a century ago by German engineers, the quality of stainless steel is determined by the constituent proportions of chromium (for corrosion resistance and luster) and nickel (for scratch resistance). There are many types of stainless steel-13/0, 18/0, 18/8 and 18/10. 18/10 is considered the highest quality and best suited to everyday use and, as such, it is the only one we use in our range of flatware. Aren’t you glad you asked? Our flatware is sourced exclusively from highly regarded, long-standing Portuguese and Italian makers. While the use of machinery and a certain level of automation is common within the industry to facilitate consistent production and improve safety, it is their focus on the role of the artisan and the traditions of their expertise in forging and shaping steel – complemented but not replaced by the machines around them – that makes them right for Teroforma.

dirt and water naturally. Wipe off spills immediately. Stains can be removed with soap, water and a small brush.
Our Steel can be washed in a dish-
washer at 150-170oF. Wipe dry with a soft cloth for best results. Restore resin handles to original luster at any time by applying a daily-use household moisturizer.
Our Stone is made exclusively of rock...just rinse’em and dry’em.
To our friends and family for being supportive and having faith. To the people who take the notes, arrange the meetings, get things done and never complain. To the people who help get our products from where they’re made to where we are to where they’re going. To the cab driver who fell asleep with all of us in the car somewhere between Panevezys and Vilnius but managed not to hit anything. To the people who advised us, gave us their honest opinions and helped us realize our vision. To our designers and artisans for seeing what we see and having the patience and commitment to point out what we don’t. To the people reading this who understand that large things happen in small steps and that any company, no matter what it does, makes or sells, is nothing more than a group of people who are accountable like everyone else for the ideas they have, the company they keep and the decisions they make.
