welcome to carnaby by Navaz Batliwalla @disneyrollergirl
Let’s face it, London’s hardly short of exciting shopping destinations. If its vast department stores, luxury megabrands or fast, furious fashion you’re after, they’re readily available. But a unique mix of the classic with the cutting edge and the casual with the conventional. In one compact, character-filled hub? That you’ll only find in the quarter-mile micro-city we call Carnaby. The area – which encompasses 13 streets – has evolved from its core music and fashion heritage to an ever-changing locale of independent shopping and socialising hangouts. Of course, the music nostalgia is important. We’re all familiar with the footage of Swinging London mods and the iconic music magazines that were produced from these very streets, but modern Carnaby has even more to offer. Youth culture still remains at the core of Carnaby style and its rebel spirit continues to thrive in the flagships and concept stores of some of our best-loved brands. In these
flagships you’re promised a unique experience, from bespoke services to custom made jeans… ask and you’ll probably get! All fashion tastes are catered for in Carnaby’s broad offer. Many an upscale label got its start in the indie boutiques of Newburgh Street, while beauty addicts flock to the niche make-up emporiums in droves. Carnaby is a magnet for discerning shoppers who can indulge their passion for quality and craftsmanship, with everything from handmade jewellery to selvedge jeans. Carnaby.co.uk

welcome to carnaby
Guide to Carnaby London 2014
Throw in an artisanal coffee shop or three, plus historic pubs selling real ale and you have a legitimate reason to linger all day. The local watering holes and neighbourly restaurants aren’t just popular with day trippers and style seekers. They also serve as idea factories for the fashion media and music industry regulars who congregate from nearby offices. Many a brainstorm takes place over a Fairtrade flat white, while the pedestrianised streets outside are stalked by DSLR-wielding style scouts for the pages of Elle, Esquire and Grazia.
“Youth culture still remains at the core of Carnaby style and its rebel spirit continues to thrive in the flagships and concept stores of some of our best-loved brands.” Carnaby.co.uk
And don’t for a second believe the myth that fashion types don’t eat. Food and fashion are perfect companions in these quarters, with Kingly Court, Ganton Street, Kingly Street and the adjacent streets home to some of London’s most innovative dining concepts. From organic burger joints to cult cafés offering exotic sharing plates, Carnaby’s varied eateries have kickstarted many a global foodie trend. Key to the Carnaby experience is the specialist knowledge and services that come from its independent heritage. A far cry from your average high street, Carnaby celebrates the offbeat, creative and experiential. Fancy taking part in an analogue photography workshop? Or organising a pre-girls night out pamper party? Carnaby is the place to make it happen. Impromptu gigs, popup exhibitions, social shopping events (the more unpredictable, the better), they’re all part of the Carnaby offer. And that’s a combination you won’t find anywhere else. Guide to Carnaby London 2014
Summer 2014 Fashion Trends Here’s Grazia magazine’s round-up of the hottest trends for Summer 2014. Learn the trends and where to find the coolest pieces in Carnaby.
Fighting Florals Forget floral prints akin to an English country garden, this season flower power returns to our wardrobe with an aggressive twist. Take a trip to Liberty where this trend will definitely be taking root.
Sporty Spice High kick your summer style by pulling your look out of the sports locker. Keep hold of those varsity jackets and team them with basketball tees and sporty stripes. The savvy way to work this trend is to combine sportswear staples from stores like Puma with cool, sporty inspired separates from Monki. Conventional sportswear is no longer just restricted to the gym.

Accessories This season is all about matchy-matchy when it comes to accessories! Make sure you opt for the same colour or print when it comes to coordinating your outfit and skip down to Brandy Melville and Cheap Monday for the latest styles. With the trainer even being teamed with evening wear, it’s the perfect opportunity to opt for Superga or give your look the masculine edge with F Troupe brogues. If you thought you knew the style rules think again as everything is turned on its head this season. Just one second… before you step out the door don’t forget to opt for jewellery which has a modern update on old ideas, in-between finger rings are a must and you can tap into this trend at The Great Frog.
Brandy Melville
Painterly Prints Brush your wardrobe with art inspired prints this season. For those of you who are less Tate Modern, take a bold shirt and team it with streamlined pieces. Find edgy printed separates at Bolongaro Trevor and Scotch & Soda.
Dress Up Denim Denim no longer has to reside exclusively in daytime. Give your evening ensembles a denim diffusion this season with a sequin tee. Shop yours from ELEVENPARIS, whose current muse is Kate Moss. Hop on down to Levi’s, Diesel and Pepe Jeans.

Lash attack
Luscious Laquer
Nothing adds a bit of face flattering retro glamour to your make-up more than full, mascara heavy lashes from Lash Perfect. A little smudged along the lower lashes? Not a problem. Compliment with a flawless, freshly foundationed face for a lived-in vibe. Nail the trend with a visit to Benefit make-up where you can get free tutorials of the must-try make up trends, and pick up their best-selling They’re Real mascara.
For every nude lip we saw this season, there was a perfectly painted power pout to compete with. It’s the ultimate in high maintenance (and slightly impractical) but it’s also the most gorgeous. For lasting depth of colour, line lips and fill in with a long-wear lip liner in a similar shade to your lipstick or gloss. Our favourites are Pixi or the high pigment shades at the Illamasqua flagship – one walk around the store and you’ll be a complete colour convert.

Pore-fect complexion Skin blurring and pore minimising products are the top-choice skincare buy at the moment. A blend of silicones and skin-loving ingredients, they glide across the skin to blur focus and imperfections. If you’ve been looking for a secret skin partner to minimise the appearance of pores, try the UK’s bestselling primer, Benefit’s Porefessional. Finish with a sweeping of the Make Up Stores legendary make-up artist fave foundation.
Well oiled Body and skin oils are in the throes of resurgence right now, from anti-ageing benefits to sebum balancing oils. Don’t forget how glowing your skin will look either. We’re hooked. Take a trip to Cowshed for luxurious body oils and spa treatments. Lash Perfect
I’m with the band Once reminiscent of school PE lessons, the humble headband is the accessory of the moment. Ensure hair is sleek, healthy looking and shiny too, for the ultimate in understated grooming. Sport this look with a trip to Monki and American Apparel for cool ‘90s accessories. Cowshed

Red Wing Shoes
Vintage Americana The SS14 catwalks were awash with vintage American inspired designs and denim was no exception. Think Marlon Brando in The Wild Ones. Carnaby is awash with cool denim brands, from Japanese jeans at Evisu, vintage styles at Levi’s Vintage and classics at Replay.
Keep It Grey Sticking to a grey-scale palette, tailoring played it safe this season. So whether it’s a double-breasted suit or a single button blazer keep it classic and make it grey. Splash out on a well-cut bespoke suit at Mark Powell, or go for a more alternative look at Peckham Rye.
Flower Power Seen on shirts, shorts, tailoring and luggage, floral is undoubtedly this season’s key print. Turn to the master of print to nail this trend at Paul Smith Soho, or head to Pretty Green for printed polos, granddad tees and embroidered pockets.
Levi’s Vintage
Perfect Pink Think pink this summer, from subtle accents on ties to full pink jackets, if you’re going to channel a colour then make it pink. For a hint of pink shop Lyle & Scott, or visit El Ganso for your pick of pink shirts.
Colourful Kicks Footwear is all about bold colour this season. If it ain’t bright then it ain’t right. Shop the huge range of trainers in Size? or for smarter shoes head to F-Troupe and for a classic boot try Red Wing.
Strap Up From drawstring to single straps, canvas to leather - when it comes to the manbag the rucksack is still reigning supreme. For classic yet durable bags, seek out authentic American brand Filson – find special edition luggage at the Newburgh Quarter store.
Rainbow Frames Round, mirrored-lens sunglasses were the name of the game last summer but Spring/Summer 14 is all about the translucent coloured frame. Nail the trend now with American Apparel where they have a frame for every face. Carnaby.co.uk

Whyte + Brown We love free range chicken and we love craft beer. Put them together, and you get a perfect combination. We focus on just a few hero ingredients – mainly chicken, eggs and craft beer. From this we have created a wide range of delicious dishes, many matched with wellchosen craft beers - like Bangkok Scotch Egg & Cool Fusion Lager and Pulled Chicken Bap & Stokey Brown ale. But if beer isn’t your thing, fear not. Our wines and cocktails are also the talk of Carnaby. The Whyte Wine Spritz is a firm favourite. It’s best enjoyed in the cool surroundings of our courtyard in Kingly Court, but if you fancy making it at home – here’s how.

things you may not have known, but definitely
should, about kua ‘aina . We are totally true to the original Kua ‘Aina on the famous North Shore of Hawaii using Da Secret recipes with which we’ve been keeping locals and holidaymakers happy since 1975! The surfboards on our wall are even real Dick Brewer boards, glassed by Jack Reeves on Sunset Beach, Oahu. Management’s favourite meal? The grilled Mahi Mahi fillet with Monterey Jack on a bun. In case you didn’t know Mahi Mahi is a firm white fish and is one of the most sustainable available - it grows fast, matures early and is categorised as ‘of least concern’ among fish. Want to order something ‘off menu’? Ask for the ‘Big Island Breakfast’ from 8am-11am. Fancy something different to drink? We are one of the very few places in the UK where you can get the rotating seasonal craft brews from Kona Brewing Co. all the way from Hawaii: either Koko Brown, Wailua Wheat or Pipeline Porter. Guide to Carnaby London 2014
history
No shopping street in the world can boast such a real connection with music and popular culture quite like Carnaby Street. Music and fashion have walked hand in hand ever since the young entrepreneur John Stephen opened his first boutique here in 1958. It became a mecca for the new mods into their sharp threads. John Lennon, The Who, The Kinks, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix were all regular visitors - now that’s rock ‘n’ roll, and we like it.
alongside other music focused brands Dr Martens, Fred Perry, Puma and The Great Frog, who make jewellery for the likes of Iron Maiden, Lady Gaga and The Artic Monkeys.
Carnaby was not only a place where the musicians came to shop, they came to hang out and play in clubs like The Roaring Twenties in the 1950s (now Ben Sherman) and The Bag O’ Nails (where Paul McCartney met Linda Eastman). In the 1980s, Carnaby saw legendary club nights Mud Club and batcave alongside the HQs of iconic music magazines NME and Smash hits, with Boy George working in a shop in the Newburgh Quarter.
The innovative walking tour app brings stories, sounds and performances vividly back to life for audiences as they activate the content whilst walking around Carnaby. Carnaby has unveiled hidden layers of music heritage via a series of plaques on key buildings in a commission by artist Lucy Harrison. Carnaby Echoes includes a free walking tour app, which uses GPS to explain the history of each building.
No wonder Liam Gallagher chose Carnaby Street as the flagship location for his Pretty Green brand,
