12 | Carnarvon & Coral Bay Destination Guide

History The Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum celebrates the little known history of the role Carnarvon played in the manned space program and in the Australian satellite communications industry. In 1966, the Casshorn antenna locally known as the ‘Sugar Scoop’ was used for the first television broadcast from Australia to the BBC in London. The program was called “Down Under Comes Up Live”. On 21 July 1969, the day of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Casshorn antenna which stands beside the OTC Dish relayed Neil Armstrong’s first steps on the Moon from NASA’s Honey Suckle Creek Tracking Station to Perth’s TV audience via Moree earth station - the first live telecast into Western Australia. Later in 1969, the larger 29.6 metre wide steerable antenna was built to facilitate better communication between the NASA Tracking Station and the USA. The Carnarvon Tracking Station (no longer standing) was located 10 kilometres south from Carnarvon. The station was built to support NASA’s Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs. It was commissioned in 1964 and operated for 11 years. It was the last station to communicate with the space capsules leaving the earth’s orbit, and the last to make contact before splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. At the height of the operation it had a staff of 220 people. The OTC Satellite Earth Station is now the site for the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, located approximately 6km from the town centre. The OTC Satellite Earth Station was opened in1966, initially the 12.8 metre wide Casshorn antenna known as the ‘sugar scoop’ was part of the global satellite communications system. The museum focuses on two parts, the Carnarvon Tracking Station and the OTC Satellite Earth Station, for which each station played separate roles in the early space industry.

Phase One of the museum was officially opened by retired NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin in 2012, Phase Two by Australian born astronaut Andy Thomas in 2014 and Phase Three in 2016 by “The Last Man on the Moon” astronaut Gene Cernan. In 2018 a new display was built to honour the first American in space Alan Shepard. The full size 25 metre tall mock up of a Mercury Redstone sits proudly sits at the entry of the museum. The museum is operated by a small dedicated group of volunteers and is mainly self funded.

Interactive Displays In the “Phase Three” building there are several interactive displays for kids of all ages. Try and land the Space Shuttle, learn about solar power and lots more!

Space Theatre Take a step back in time, relive the touching moments and watch the short documentaries of the space communications.

Apollo Experience Jump inside the full-size Apollo capsule to experience a near to real life experience of the Saturn V launch. The capsule shakes and rattles while you take off!

Planetarium Every half hour enjoy the wonderful movies in the 6 meter diameter inflatable planetarium. It’s a full on visual experience discovering space.

Museum Displays On display throughout the museum is the full size Gemini and Apollo Capsules, original Mercury, Gemini and Apollo consoles, official piece of Skylab and OTC and NASA memorabilia.

Space Shop You could find a wide range of unique gift ideas at the Space shop including memorabilia items of the Space and Technology Museum. For the Gold Coin collectors, you can find your very own Space Coin to add to your collection. IG @ Adrian Makarov

HISTORY OF THE JETTY As the pastoral industry developed in Carnarvon in the late 1800s the local population pressured the government of the day to develop a port for the town. By 1897 the jetty had been built and wool and livestock produced in the region began to be exported to Fremantle and essential goods for the town were imported using state shipping. In 1904 the head of the jetty was added and in 1912 the jetty head was widened because of increasing traffic, including passengers – some whom were Aboriginals transported to Bernier and Dorre Islands. Carnarvon was the first port in Western Australia which loaded livestock on board ships for transport to markets. The One Mile Jetty once boasted an animal race the length of the jetty along which the sheep and cattle were driven from holding yards where the Interpretive Centre is today.

IG @ Laura Barth

@ The Wanderfully Lost

The jetty transport system and diesel locos on the tramway ceased in 1966 when state ships stopped calling. Road train transport commenced, and the jetty began to fall into disrepair until 1998 when the community banded together to save what is the longest jetty in the north of the state. Although the jetty is currently closed, you can walk along the boardwalk through the mangroves and down to Dwyer’s Leap.

FOR FOOD LOVERS When it comes to food, the Sunsets Café is definitely a place to eat! New on the foodie scene of Carnarvon, Sunsets Café offers Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Tapas is always a hit. While enjoying the delicious food, Sunsets offers magnificent views of the One Mile Jetty and the mouth of the Gascoyne River.

Old Tramway Walk Trail

This museum houses the Kimberley Steam Train, which was brought down from Broome in the 1950s. It was the last steam train to operate in the North West.

This 2.5km walk trail runs the length of the tramway from the Town Bridge (Fascine Town Beach) to the Heritage Precinct. Trains once travelled from the One Mile Jetty to the goods yard in town, where the Civic Centre Woolshed stands today.

You can’t walk but you can fly! Coral Coast Helicopter Services are always up for a breathtaking flight over this extraordinary piece of history, also taking in the Carnarvon town site. The Heli-pad is located at the Sunsets Café, so take-off is right over the mangroves and right along the One Mile Jetty. Thrill seekers will have the opportunity of flying with no doors on the helicopter. Flights are available daily, though pre-bookings are recommended. More information and bookings contact the Visitor Centre.

Shearing Hall of Fame The Heritage Group in collaboration with The Gascoyne Pastoral and Shearing Museum Inc have opened Western Australia’s first Shearing Hall of Fame. Read about gun shearers and big sheds. Learn about the golden days of the Gascoyne shearing industry in the 1950s.

Light House Keepers Cottage This museum is a cottage which was built around the 1900s to house the lighthouse keeper and his family and used until the 1970s. The building has now been restored and houses memorabilia from bygone days.

Nature Based Walk Trail For a shorter walk is the 400m trail from the Precinct to the Gascoyne River Mouth with views of the river and the jetty. The Mangrove Boardwalk as its name suggests, meanders out into the mangroves where one can be at peace with nature and take in another aspect of the One Mile Jetty. This boardwalk has been constructed by students using recycled plastic materials and is an ongoing project.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHY BUFFS The jetty is the perfect base for sunrise and sunset images, with Carnarvon producing some of the most magnificent sunrises and sunsets in Western Australia. We suggest you pack a picnic and sit on the beach near the One Mile Jetty and capture all the magical moments.

One Mile Jetty Interpretive Centre The Interpretive Centre is home to the HMAS Sydney II/ HSK Kormoran Display. This famous Australian battle off the Gascoyne Coast in 1941 is remembered and told in the Centre. You can also view one of the lifeboats in which 46 German survivors came ashore north of Carnarvon. A refit of the Interpretive Centre is due to be completed in July/ August 2018.

Carnarvon’s lush horticultural region is where the abundance of tropical fruits, succulent seafood and array of fruits and vegetables is grown. Produce availability in Carnarvon is defined by the seasons. Between May and October, the region produces an abundant array of fresh fruits and vegetables, and outside of these months a small variety of produce is grown. Seafood is available from March to November. Annual weather aberrations such as cyclones, floods, heavy rain to drought may also have a slight effect on exact dates of specific produce availability.

IG @ Uriah Makings

Did you know you cannot bring fruit into Carnarvon? Carnarvon is a very important horticultural area for Western Australia and visitors play an important role in the management and eradication of fruit fly. You are welcome, but please don’t bring your fruit!

Seafood

Growers Markets

Most of the state’s seafood comes from the waters off Carnarvon with a thriving prawn, scallop, crab and fish industry operating from Carnarvon. Seafood can be purchased from Pickles Point Seafood at the Small Boat Harbour and is available between the months of March and November. Outside these months the hours vary.

Every Saturday from the end of May to early October the Gascoyne Growers Markets operates from out the front of the Visitor Centre from 8am to 11.30am. You will find tropical fruits, homemade ice-creams, and a wide variety of vegies, herbs, honey, cakes, jams and relishes. Enjoy some serious bean coffee and delicious breakfast options. Browse through the Courtyard Craft Markets to find yourself a homemade souvenir. The markets are plastic bag free, so be sure to bring along your bags.

The ‘Fruit Loop’ Totally different from Kellogg’s Froot Loops Cereal, but just as colourful in season. During the months of May to October you can take a drive around South and North River Road which lines the banks of the Gascoyne River. Honesty stalls on the side of the road will have a wide range of produce available to purchase. EFTPOS doesn’t exist, so take plenty of coins. Products can be second grade produce but this doesn’t make a difference to its taste.

Carnarvon Bananas Famous for

IG @ Yvonne Morawska

@ Carnarvon Sweeter Banana

Did you know? Carnarvon was the first place in Australia where Bananas were grown. Now Carnarvon is recognised as the place where the tastiest and sweetest bananas are grown. Sweeter Banana is the brand developed so that consumers could identify and purchase their bananas of choice. At a later date, the ‘Original Lunchbox Banana’ brand was developed to help differentiate Carnarvon’s bananas from Tropical North Queensland Bananas.

Our formula to Sweeter Bananas Sweeter Banana growers would like to say that we are very clever and have created the ultimate formula to grow the best bananas, but we have to be honest and say it is just because of our unique climate and growing conditions which is the formula to producing the Sweeter Banana. Our Bananas grow very close together. This is because our arid desert climate, and it also protects the bananas from the summer heat and sea breeze. Our desert climate also protects us from lots of nasty bugs and pests that plague bananas everywhere else they are grown. This means we don’t have to treat our bananas for pesticides, making them chemical free. A trip to Carnarvon isn’t complete without eating bananas for breakfast, lunch and dinner! You can find the Sweeter Bananas in IGA Supermarket and Woolworths.

Sweeter Banana Bread Our climate in Carnarvon has strong sea breezes in summer which isn’t something the bananas like! Growers do their best to keep the heat, cold and keep the humidity in by growing them close together. Unfortunately, this also means that they grow with marks, the marks are just superficial, they don’t impact the taste, but it just doesn’t look pretty. In this day and age, everyone wants pretty looking things; supermarkets reject products with marks. The Sweeter Banana growers decided to start producing Sweeter Banana Bread with second grade bananas. The product contains all WA farmers’ products and up to 30% of ripe bananas. The bread is great toasted or warmed in the microwave with butter or ricotta cheese. Don’t forget to pick up your loaf from the Visitor Centre or IGA Supermarket when in Carnarvon.

18 | Carnarvon & Coral Bay Destination Guide

Meet our Sweeter Banana Growers Michael and his wife Catriona came from wheat, cattle and sheep farming in New Norcia, to Carnarvon to grow bananas in 2007. “I am continually amazed at the response that I get when people try our bananas” said Michael, “it is really inspiring to be able to live in this fantastic place and grow such a great product that people love”.

LOCAL BEACHES

DAY TRIPS

FISHING SPOTS

Fascine Town Beach – Located on the Fascine, this is a safe beach for kids and adults alike. You can also swim to the pontoon in the Fascine. Fishing can be done anywhere in the Fascine. A good spot is on the footbridge.

Rocky Pool – Located 55km east of Carnarvon you will find the magical location of Rocky Pool. After driving along Carnarvon Mullewa Road you will turn to the left (north) along a 4km unsealed road. It is a beautiful picnic spot with a fresh water pool in one of few places along the Gascoyne River which holds water long after the river ceases to flow. It has gum trees surrounding it and there are kangaroos and birdlife to see. No facilities are available, and camping is not permitted.

Miaboolya Beach – It is known as the nursery for tailor. You can also catch mangrove jack, western yellowfin bream, mulloway, dart and goldenline – as well as crustaceans such as shrimps and crabs.

Pelican Point – Located at the end of Pelican Point Road. It is a popular beach for kite surfers. There are friendly little crabs that will crawl on your hand.

SURROUNDING BEACHES Miaboolya Beach – Located 22km north of Carnarvon. It’s a popular swimming, crabbing and fishing spot. Miaboolya’s main creek is cut off from the ocean by a sand bar for months at a time, creating a coastal lagoon. Miaboolya Beach is the only beach in the Coral Coast Region where clothes are optional. New Beach/Bush Bay – Located 35km south of Carnarvon. Partly unsealed. Camping is permitted. A great fishing spot.

SNORKELLING The ‘Aquarium’ at Point Quobba – Located 75km north of Carnarvon and 1km south of the Blowholes is Point Quobba, a calm coral filled lagoon with fish and shells in abundance. With a white sandy beach this area is ideal for snorkelling, safe swimming, sun bathing and a great family picnic spot much favoured by locals.

Blowholes – Located 75km north of Carnarvon, along a sealed road. Pack a picnic and snorkelling gear and head to this natural phenomenon, an awe-inspiring sight to see and must do when visiting Carnarvon. Powerful ocean swells force water through sea caves and up out of narrow holes in the rocks, jets of water erupt into the air, sometimes to a height of 20 metres, creating a spectacular sight. Mother Nature is simply amazing, but it is important to check the surging tide, wind and swell, which gives that large blow! Although the coast is serene it can be deadly, with a dangerous swell that can turn into king waves, capable of crashing over the top of the rock ledge. This coastline needs to be treated with caution and care - lives have been lost by unsuspecting souls here.

Teggs Channel – Built in 1991 to serve as a fishing spot for local and visiting anglers, access via Massey Bay road. Prawning Jetty – Originally built in the 1950s for whale chasers when the Nor-West Whaling station was open. The end section spans over a deep channel and it is often here that the big ones are caught. Mulloway and big Tailor are caught all year round. Pink Snapper on the second day of windy weather, Bream in Winter, Blue Manna Crabs from May to August and Mackerel and Tuna mid-summer.

BIRD WATCHING Carnarvon is known as a popular Bird Watching spot for nature lovers. Some of the birds found in the area include the Whistling Kite, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Little Eagle and Brown Falcon. Flocks of Cockatiel, Budgerigar and Galah may be sighted. Honeyeaters wander over the region in search of flowering shrubs such as Eremophila species. Locations around Carnarvon such as Chinaman’s Pool, Miabooyla Beach and New Beach Bush Bay are great spots for bird watching. BEACH & GAME FISHING

Carnarvon to: • Blowholes – 75km • Quobba Station – 85km • Red Bluff – 135km • Gnaraloo – 145km

Whistling Rock is located 8kms north of the Quobba Homestead, it is 20ft above sea level and is one of Quobba’s most consistent spots on the coastline for catching Spanish Mackerel, Tuna and Sail Fish during the winter months.

GATEWAY TO THE SOUTHERN NINGALOO REEF

Beach Fishing is available from several beaches along the coastline. You can catch mulloway, taylor, dart, trevally, snapper and squid. We recommend checking in with the Quobba Homestead before fishing off beaches to ensure you are not within sanctuary zones.

Carnarvon is known as the gateway to the Southern Ningaloo Reef, travelling north towards Coral Bay and Exmouth you will find the road to the Blowholes and Quobba. North of the King Waves Kill sign at the Blowholes you can travel on unsealed road towards the start of the World Heritage Ningaloo Marine Park, you can only travel as far as the wilderness destination of Gnaraloo. The rugged cliffs along the way make it an exciting adventure to experiencing some of the best surfing, fishing, swimming, snorkelling and camping spots.

TURTLES The Gnaraloo Turtle Conservation Program is available to anyone staying at Gnaraloo. Gnaraloo initiated its scientific turtle program in 2005 to identify and protect significant breeding areas of endangered sea turtles and species. Field research for the program is undertaken from the beginning of November to end of February each year.

Gnaraloo is a paradise for people who love to fish. Whether you choose to use live bait or lures, rods or balloons, you’re sure to catch a variety of great fish. Be aware of the sanctuary zones along the Quobba Coastline.

BOATING Get in your boat off the coast of Gnaraloo and you won’t be disappointed. Outside the sanctuary zones are great catches of spangles, rock cod, coronation trout, ranking, pearl perch, yellow-fin tuna and pink snapper - to name a few. You don’t need a motorboat to get out for a good catch; a kayak will do just as well. There is a safe area for beach launching at Gnaraloo Bay. Check the tides before you go and be especially cautious on the beach at low tide.

Tombstones Gnaraloo - IG @Tranquil.Lane

SURFING Red Bluff is the southern tip of the Ningaloo Reef. Red Bluff is where the red dirt meets the rugged coastline. It’s a world-renowned surfing spot for waves ranging from 1ft to 8ft and monster left hand reef breaks. Gnaraloo is another world-renowned surfing spot with international visitors and keen surfers flocking the coast for the surf season. Tombstones is only for the experienced but if you’re up for the challenge, give it a go! The best breaks are between mid-April and late October. The major spots to check out are: Tombstones, Centres, Midgies, Turtles, Fenceline and Gnaraloo Bay. There are countless other spots to be discovered - just talk to the locals and the people at 3Mile about where to find them. Tombstones – This is the wave of Gnaraloo. It is a left hand, full on barrel from start to finish, depending on the tide and swell. Ideal conditions are at mid to high tide when the winds blow south southeast. It can break for up to 300500m. Be aware that at low tide, the reef is exposed; the Tombies are famous for dredging and ugly steps in the last wave. Gnaraloo Bay – If you’re looking for a more chilled out wave, this is your best spot. Though it’s mellow, it’s still not a break for beginners - this solid left barrel wraps around a shallow reef. Go when there is a

large swell from the Southwest, and great winds from the Southeast. It’s a 7km drive from Gnaraloo Homestead.

KITE SURFING Tombstones is the main wave and enjoyed by surfers and windsurfers as well. This wave is for experienced riders as the wave can be massive, it’s important to note that the reef is shallow and sharp. Gnaraloo Bay is a great spot for flat water, however the typical south wind can make it a bit offshore and really only works safely with a lot of west in it.

HUMPBACK WHALES Humpbacks migrate on the Quobba coastline from July to November. The Blowholes and the Quobba cliffs are perfect viewing platforms to watch these amazing ocean creatures. You are bound to witness these amazing creatures in all their glory dominating the deep blue. The whales come within metres of the coastline and can be seen rising majestically from the sea frolicking and playing in a display of remarkable strength and size as they tail flap, breach and torso slap, sometimes lifting their entire body from the water. Heli-Humpback Whale watching is available, it’s one of the first tours of its kind in Western Australia. Tailor your heli-adventure to include a stopover at the Golden Cliffs.

Blowholes - IG @ The Wanderfully Lost

SWIMMING & SNORKELLING If you love snorkelling, we highly recommend you add Point Quobba ‘the Aquarium’, 3Mile Lagoon and Gnaraloo Bay when visiting the Quobba Coastline. Over 170 species have been spotted along the reef, so you’ll be sure to witness some underwater magic. Point Quobba ‘The Aquarium’ – Is a safe protected lagoon located 1km south of the rugged Blowholes. 3Mile Lagoon – The best time to snorkel in the lagoon is when the swell is big or the tides are low. As long as the conditions are clear, you can snorkel any time of day; however, fish are the most active right before sunset. When the tide is high, and the swell is flat, experienced swimmers (using fins) can attempt to swim through a ‘keyhole’ in the reef at the back of the Lagoon. This keyhole can be found opposite to where the boats launch over the sand dune. This is also the best spot for a night snorkel, as the lagoon is protected by the reef. Don’t forget your waterproof torch! Gnaraloo Bay – Once you see the turquoise waters here, you’ll be excited to jump right in. If you walk south on the beach for 200m, past the point, you can catch the current for a drift ride over the reef. It’s important to note the current can be strong the closer you get to the point. To be safe, ensure you make your way to the shore well before reaching the point. www.Carnarvon.org.au | 21

Alternatively you can take advantage of one of the professional tour companies who offer combined coral viewing and snorkelling, manta interactions, sailing, kayaking, scenic flights, fishing charters and diving tours to various hotspots just within the outer reef which is home to an abundance of coral, turtles and manta Rays. Snorkelling equipment is also available for purchase or hire through various operators in Coral Bay. For the adventurous land lovers, there are quad bike tours available, allowing visitors to explore some of the more remote beaches, bush tracks and dunes that surround Coral Bay throughout the day. In Coral Bay everything is just a short walk from your accommodation, such as tour IG @ AlexKyddPhoto

booking offices, clothing stores, day spa, newsagency, and supermarket and food outlets. Services such as petrol station, ATM and internet access are also available.

Coral Bay - The Heart of the Ningaloo Reef The Ningaloo Marine Park encompasses Australia’s largest and most accessible fringing coral reef system. Many creatures are found in the Marine Park, including whale sharks (the world’s largest fish), turtles, dugongs, dolphins, manta rays and humpback whales. The marine park has been divided into zones to protect the biodiversity of the natural environment, while allowing for recreational and commercial use. The fringing coral reef is what makes the Coral Bay area so special. Living coral is delicate, with only a thin veneer of living tissue covering the hard coral skeleton. Once damaged, coral often takes many years to grow back.

Turtles The loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles are the three varieties of turtles that can be seen in Coral Bay. Turtles are common marine life that can also be found on snorkelling and diving tours. Don’t forget your turtle #selfie!

Swimming with the Whalesharks Ningaloo Reef Dive & Snorkel and Coral Bay Eco Tours both offer tours swimming with the biggest fish in the world, the whale sharks from March to July. This is an incredible encounter you will always remember with experienced and professional guides. They use spotter planes to guide the vessels to the whale shark to maximise their success rate. It is a full day tour which includes lunch and refreshments, as well as all equipment and government charges. You may also see dolphins, turtles, dugongs and manta rays on this tour.

Coastal Adventure Tours run self-drive Quad Trek adventures which are unique and exciting.
