Awards Ceremony 2010 Tonight we are celebrating the achievements and success of Carnegie students from across the College. They will be presented with awards acknowledging their commitment and endeavour during the past year.
Our prize winners have all been nominated for awards by Carnegie College staff. Students have been recognised for many reasons, including those who have shown great determination to succeed, those who have overcome health or other problems, some for the support they have shown to other learners and others for the high standard of their work and excellence in learning. We share these celebrations with students who have undertaken degree studies, students who have achieved excellence in craft apprenticeships, students who have returned to study, those who are preparing for employment and those looking to undertake further study and qualifications. All are to be congratulated on their success and take with them our very best wishes for the future.

A message from the Principal It is a genuine pleasure to share the success of Carnegie College award winners with friends and sponsors of the College. The Awards Ceremony is always a very special event in the College year and I would like to sincerely thank the many representatives of business, industry and the community who support the work of Carnegie by sponsoring the awards. ‘Success’ comes in many and varied forms and I am delighted that we can recognise the achievements of our students this evening. For some it is success in excelling academically, for others it may be overcoming adversity or giving exceptional service to the community. To all our award winners, my heartfelt congratulations. Tonight’s speakers Graham Bowstead Chairman Carnegie College Board of Management Graham has served on the College Board of Management since 2000. He was elected Chairman in June 2006. Prior to this he was Chairman of Young Enterprise Scotland in the Lothians. Born in Farnborough in 1955, Graham left school aged 16 to start an apprenticeship as a compositor in the printing industry, attending West Surrey College of Art and Design in Guildford. Apart from one year teaching English in Spain he has spent his whole working life in the printing industry, progressing through production and sales to general management. He is currently Managing Director of Perivan Scotland. Graham lives in Kinross and is married to Maite from Bilbao, Spain. He has two daughters and one grandson.
Bob Garmory President, Fife Chamber of Commerce Business Development Manager, Purvis Group Bob was recently appointed President of Fife Chamber of Commerce – a two year tenure. He works as Business Development Manager for the Purvis Group, a large construction services company based in Lochgelly that employs 400 people. Currently he is heavily involved in the launch of Purvis Renewables, an installation and maintenance company for renewable technology to be used in commercial industrial and retail facilities throughout Scotland. A member of the College’s Board of Management since 2008, Bob is involved in several committees, including the Managers’ Forum, Student and Staff Affairs Committee and Estates Committee. He is part owner of Tayside Aviation who own Fife Airport and employ 35 people training the next generation of pilots at their facility at Dundee. Bob has been a tutor with the Leadership Trust, an internationally renowned provider of Leadership Training, for the last 15 years. He is married to Anne and they have one son Steven who is an Infantry Major in the British Army. They have one grandson Henry, who is 30 months old, and already puts Bob to shame with his capability to speak both English and German, his mum Katherina’s native language. Bob’s hobbies are supporting Dunfermline Athletic and to cheer himself up he enjoys gardening and DIY. He has been an active member of the Bowhill Peoples Burns Club for 35 years.

Professor McIntosh spent his childhood in Dunfermline’s Abbeyview, and left school aged 16 to take up employment at Rosyth Royal Dockyard, but realising the benefits of education returned to study at Dunfermline High School and was awarded the Gifford Memorial Prize for Excellence in 6th year. He then went on to study at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, achieving a BA Economics (1st Class Hons) in 1974; a Certificate of Education at Jordanhill College, Glasgow in 1978; and became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management in 1989.
Janet McCauslin has lived in West Fife throughout her life, attending Queen Anne High School, teaching at Inzievar Primary School and joining the College 21 years ago as a part-time lecturer.
Professor McIntosh has held lecturing posts at the University of Strathclyde, Bell College and Napier Polytechnic. He moved on to become Head of Business Studies at Napier, then Dean of Professional Studies at Napier. In 1988 he moved to The Robert Gordon University as Assistant Principal/Dean and became Vice Principal/Dean of Aberdeen Business School in 2001. In 2004 he became Vice Principal, Academic Development. Professor McIntosh was appointed Principal of the then Lauder College in September 2005. In March 2007 he was elected Vice Chairman of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce. He is a Director of Royal Dunfermline, Arts and Theatre Trust Fife and is a Board member of Fife Economic Partnership. In his spare time he loves to travel. He also enjoys football (a Director with Dunfermline Athletic), golf and current affairs, and walking his athletic dalmations, Cleopatra and Nubi.
Born and raised in High Valleyfield, thereafter living in Inverkeithing and Dunfermline, Janet knows our community well and is committed to helping local people succeed. She has held numerous roles in the College over the past two decades and is a key player in progressing our external relations and our partnerships with schools, communities and universities such as Edinburgh Napier. Janet holds a number of local and national roles and is an active partner in the Fife Community Planning Partnership, an Elder in Inverkeithing Parish Church, and a Trustee with the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust. In January 2008 she was awarded the MBE for her services to education in Fife.
Craig Walker President, Carnegie College Student Representative Council Before his election as President of the Student Representative Council, Craig was a part-time HNC Acting and Performance student at Carnegie. He is now nearing the end of his two year term as President and in September will again become a student, continuing his education at Edinburgh Napier University as an undergraduate, studying BA English and Film. 05

Each of the many prizes which are presented this evening represent a special link between Carnegie College and an individual, a group or an industry. The Awards can be divided into four categories – those sponsored by businesses, by professional organisations, by the College and those presented in memory of former College students and staff.

We are always pleased when employers acknowledge the working partnership between their business and the College by offering to sponsor an award. We are extremely grateful to SRJ Windows of Oakley for their continued sponsorship of our Student of the Year Award. SRJ is a true family run business in every sense of the term and has an enviable local reputation that has been growing at a pace since it was first created twelve years ago. The company was founded jointly by father and son team, Keith and Stephen Macintosh with a strong quality ethos and ambitious goals for the future. From Keith’s original concept, together with Stephen’s drive and professionalism, the company is now turning over in excess of £4.5 million per year of purely retail window business.
