I can still remember the day I got my senior high school yearbook, just a few weeks before graduation. I opened it nervously, knowing that there were at least a few moments during the past year when I’d probably acted with a little less discretion than I would have liked (at least it seemed that way upon further reflection) and I didn’t have nearly enough money to pay off the whole yearbook editorial staff. For better or worse, yearbooks represent the selected memories of a few about a period of history that was shaped by many. But from the first page they generate a flood of memories by everyone involved in creating that history. Yearbooks also provide one of the first tangible signs that one “era” is about to end and another, daunting in its uncertainty and inevitability, is about to begin. Of all the books and notes and other “important stuff” that you’ll take from your Heinz School experience, it is likely that this book will continue to elevate in importance over time and perhaps, along with your hard-earned diploma, end up as your sole remaining keepsake of this time in your life. Laugh and cry (with joy, I hope) at the pictures. Get everyone to sign it with a line or two of good luck thrown in (and don’t forget to give your favourite faculty and staff a chance to get in a word or two). Savour the memories and accomplishments that everything in this yearbook represents. Thanks to all of you who have helped to create a lifetime of memories for those of us who have been part of your Heinz School experience this year. Tim Zak Executive Director

CASEY Gilbert (United States of America) Casey Gilbert was born in the small city of Laconia, New Hampshire in 1979. Four generations of her family have resided in Laconia; a family of entrepreneurs on both sides. She grew up understanding the importance of hard work and giving back to her community. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Community Development and Applied Economics from the University of Vermont in 2002, she returned to Laconia to put her skills to work in her community. In addition to her role in her families’ real estate company, Casey also volunteered with a local economic redevelopment organization, the Laconia Main Street Program, and a local non-profit social service agency, Community Health and Hospice. While working full-time and volunteering is certainly enough to keep anyone busy, Casey decided that in order to be more effective, her skill set would have to increase. After careful research on Masters programs in the U.S, Ms. Gilbert found only one program that perfectly fit her desire to gain invaluable knowledge and skills at a prestigious school: the MSPPM at CMU. When the chance arose to fulfil her degree requirements in Adelaide, it seemed like a once-ina-lifetime opportunity! In her professional life, she enjoys helping others and being as effective as possible. When the time comes for play; golf and the beach are on the top of her list! The things about CMU Heinz Australia that she will most miss are her fellow students from across the globe and the wide variety of clients that she worked with over her 11 months in Adelaide. Some of her fondest memories from travelling in Australia were holding a baby roo at a kangaroo rescue centre in Alice Springs, the night sky in the desert near Uluru, and a special birthday trip to Sydney. She wishes all of her fellow graduates the best of luck in their future endeavours and offers a huge ‘Thank You’ to her friends and family who have supported and encouraged her along the way~ cheers!! ELIJAH Liech (KENYA) Having graduated as one of the top students with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems and Technology at the United States International University, Elijah Liech joined the mainstream IT team at the Government of Kenya Information Technology Services. The ICT industry in Kenya is a fast growing industry and requires one to be abreast with what is going on not only in Kenya but in the whole world, one simply has to be among the best to do well in the Kenyan IT industry. Heading the ICT unit at the Office of the President, with a programming, networking and database administration background, the icing on the cake is what Elijah has just achieved - an MSIT degree from one of the most reputable universities in the world, CMU. This has not only enhanced Elijah’s technical skills tenfold but has also given him the much needed managerial skills to cope with an increasingly dynamic ICT industry. Elijah is also taking with him a wealth of experiences from having called Adelaide “home” for close to a year. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”; and “It always seems impossible until its done.” — Nelson Mandela

DAVID Phiri ( Zambia) David’s Philosophy is that IT capabilities are supposed to be developed to support and be aligned with the objectives and operations of Businesses and not to change the way a Business operates or deviate from strategic goals of Business Organizations. With his one year experience at Carnegie Mellon , David looks forward to contributing in the development of IT in his country by providing strategic direction, leadership and training. David has been working as a Software Engineer in the IT Department of a Power Utility Company in Zambia for 3 years. He worked on several software development projects, participating in all the stages of systems development life cycle. His experience at Carnegie has enhanced his skills in sound technical practices, management and how to optimise the value of IT investments in regards to leveraging business objectives.
DANICIA Phiri (Swaziland) Danicia’s likes for consideration: Never receive counsel from unproductive people. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how to. Not everyone has a right to speak into your life. It is better to be alone that to be in the company of the wrong. Don’t follow anyone who’s not going anywhere. With some people you spend time: with others you invest it. You are better off consulting from the life’s Designer else your life will be a bug. Wise is the person who fortifies his life with right friendships. OH WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS! The Lord’s golden rule ‘Do to others as you would like it done to you’.
FREDERICK Zoreta (Philippines) Frederick, more commonly known as Eric, has been in the IT Industry since 1999. The majority of his industry experience is on the management and planning aspects of IT. His interests in the information sciences lie mostly on databases and networking. Prior to arriving at Carnegie Mellon Australia, Eric was working as a technical trainer at an American Call center, with accounts focussing on Dell Computers and Linksys. It had to be cut short because such a tremendous and honourable opportunity to be educated at one of the world’s top Universities only happens once in a hundred lifetimes. Fast-forwarding to his future, Eric wants to contribute to his native land, the Philippines by being involved in several IT education programs that would further boost the excellent IT talent and infrastructure of the Philippines. His main aim is not just on the technical aspects of IT, but also on technology management and IT Project Management. One matter that became close to his heart while at CMU is Strategic Planning, in which he plans to further dabble once he is back in the workforce.
