Where 6 h o u s e s had once stood,--now l a y a huge b l o b o f wood, p a r t s of w a l l s , some f u r n i t u r e t h a t w a s p r a c t i c a l l y d e s t r o y e d and t h e s t e p s of one house t h a t w a s no more. Only t h e g r a f i t t i on some o f t h e r e m a i n i n g p i e c e s of w a l l symbolized t h e p h i l o s o p h y o f some 36 homeless s q u a t t e r s : "Homelessness i s n o t a crimev"& "Homes f o r a l l and a l l f o r homes I ' I walked a b o u t t h e heap of t h e s e c r u s h e d homes, a d m i r i n g t h e s t a n d t h e s e s q u a t t e r s t o o k , Mostly young p e o p l e w i t h no money and nowhere t o go, t h e y r e f u s e d t o bow t o p r e s s u r e from t h e D e v e l o p e r , t h e c o u r t s and the police t o vacate a functioning neighbourhood..which h a s now been f l a t t e n e d and l e f t f o r who knows how long. They s e t up r o a d b l o c k s on F r i d a y , Nov.23, and a g a i n on Nov.27. The l a s t r o a d b l o c k l e t p o l i c e u s e t h e e x c u s e t h a t t h e r e were f i r e a r m s h i d d e n i n one o f t h e homes. That p r o m p ~ e d 80 armed s p e c i a l f o r c e s t r o o p s , t h e RCMP even a h e l i c o p t e r . I t took 20 m i n u t e s t o d e m o l i s h t h e homes and t h e l a s t s q u a t t e r s d i d n o t vacate " u n t i l the f l o o r s s t a r t e d s h a k i n g , " s a i d Denis J e a n , o n e o f t h e l a s t , d i e hard s q u a t t e r s . A l l were a r r e s t e d and c h a r g e d w i t h e i t h e r mischief, v i o l a t i n g c o u r t o r d e r s o r d e s t r u c t i o n of t h e p e a c e . Some were n o t charged a t a l l .
On Nom.29 t h e s q u a t t e r s and t h e i r s u p p o r t e r s h e l d a r a l l y . It w a s q u i t e c h i l l y and t h e r a i n s t a r t e d a b o u t 7. When w e a r r i v e d t h e r e w e r e q u i t e a few p e o p l e , maybe 100. I bumped i n t o J o n a t h a n , who t u t o r s a t t h e L e a r n i n g C e n t r e . He s a i d t h a t h e was b u s t e d w h i l e a masked o f f i c e r p o i n t e d a semi-automatic r i f l e a t h i s head. He was p a s s i n g t h r o u g h t h e a r e a on h i s " d e a d l y bike". Given no c h o i c e , h e w a s c h a r g e d w i t h " p o s s e s s i o n of a d a n g e r o u s weapon." They c o u l d n ' t f i n d any 11d a n g e r o u s weapons" s o h e was then charged w i t h o b s t r u c t i n g t h e peace. A f t e r a few s t a t e m e n t s were made everybody t o o k t o t h e s t r e e t s . We t o o k o v e r t h e l a n e s h e a d i n g n o r t h on Commercial and began o u r march. The C i t y of Vancouver d e s t r o y e d my home and now I f e e l t h a t I u n d e r s t a n d how t h e N a t i v e P e o p l e f e e l . ~ a r n e e i eC h a r a c t e r Po Born ~ i c h a r dP o o l e y on May 1 7 , 1938 i n Vancouver, T o r a ' s f a t h e r w a s a b o o k i e f r o n t i n g a s a t o b a c c o n i s t and h i s mother was a h o u s e w i f e . He was r a i s e d i n Dunbar and s t u d i e d a t Lord Uyge H.S. During h i g h s c h o o l he served i n t h e m i l i t i a with t h e I r i s h F u s i l i e r s , whose a r m o r i e s burned t o t h e ground y e a r s l a t e r . I n Grade 11 he dropped o u t of s c h o o l and l i v e d i n t h e Downtown E a s t s i d e , working a t t h e Balantyne P i e r i n t h e e a r l y 1950's. A f t e r f i n a l l y g r a d u a t i n g i n '52-'53, h e p u r s u e d a s h o r t - l i v e d engagement a s a g l o r i f i e d boy s c o u t i n O f f i c e r T r a i n i n g . When t h e b i g ' 6 0 ' s h i t , Tora had l o n g been o u t of t h e army, m a r r i e d 7 y e a r s and worked a s a commercial artist. I1 The 6 0 ' s f o r me was a t r a n s i t i o n from commercial a r t t o a l i f e s t y l e of h a l l u c i n o g e n i c h i p p y d e c a d e n c e . Dinah, a l o n g w i t h some o t h e r CEEDS members, a r e former s t r e e t p e o p l e of W i l l i a m s Lake ( n i c k named ' ~ r o o p e r s ' ) . About 1 3 y e a r s ago a bunch of u s w h i t e p e o p l e were hippi e s i n t h e h i l l s , s q u a t t i n g on a piec-e of l a n d , Borland Meadow, n e a r Wms.Lk. We w h i t e p e o p l e and t h e T r o o p e r s j o i n ed f o r c e s and began g a r d e n i n g and f a r ming t o g e t h e r , t h e o r g a n i c way. Our f i r s t and l a r g e s t community garden was on Sugar Cane I n d i a n Band l a n d i n 1977-78. A t t h e Sugar Cane Communi t y Garden we had p i g s , m i l k cows and The g a r d e n had a c a m p f i r e chickens. e v e r y n i g h t and t h e p e o p l e of Sugar Cane v i s i t e d o f t e n . From Sugar Cane, we moved t o Toosey I n d i a n Band i n t h e C h i l c o t i n N a t i o n where we c o n t i n u e d g a r d e n i n g and farmi n g . W e were a t Toosey f o r 2 y e a r s when t h e wind changed d i r e c t i o n and w e no l o n g e r f e l t welcome. We packed camp and moved o u t .
L i v i n g t o g e t h e r on I n d i a n Band l a n d , growing o r g a n i c g a r d e n s and f a r m i n g , i s a p o l i t i c a l s t a t e m e n t . We b e l i e v e and were d e m o n s t r a t i n g t h a t independence s t a r t s w i t h s e l f - s u f f i c i e n c y . The T r o o p e r s and t h e H i p p i e s , t h e soc a l l e d down-and-outers, were d o i n g t h e biggest co-operative venture t h a t ever h i t t h e Cariboo. Now, 10 y e a r s l a t e r , we a r e gardeni n g on 2 I n d i a n Band l a n d s . W h i s p e r i n g P i n e s I n d i a n Band n e a r Kamloops, and A l k a l i Lake I n d i a n Band n e a r W i l l i a m s Lake. Both a r e summer g a r d e n camps. The g a r d e n i n Kamloops i s managed by a t l e a s t 2 CEEDS members. The g a r d e n a t A l k a l i i s grown by Dinah B e l l e a u , who i s a band member. CEEDS l o o k s f o r w a r d t o t h e day when I n d i a n N a t i o n s c l a i m t h e i r independence by t a k i n g c o n t r o l of t h e i r own food p r o d u c t i o n . T h i s n e e d s t o be done t h e o r g a n i c way and c o - o p e r a t i v e l y . I n 1985 A l k a l i Lake r e c e i v e d a l a r g e government g r a n t f o r a g r i c u l t u r a l purposes. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , Department of A g r i c u l t u r e s p e c i f i c a t i o n s were f o l l o w e d . Band members were h i r e d ,
c h e m i c a l s and s p r a y s were a p p l i e d t o t h e v e g e t a b l e c r o p s , and a v i g b a r n was b u i l t l i k e a cement dungeon. The project failed. Dinah and many I n d i a n p e o p l e have t o l d u s s t o r i e s of t h e i r c h i l d h o o d , when t h e I n d i a n Bands had communal gardens.' The work was s h a r e d , a s was t h e food. The t r a d i t i o n a l g a r d e n s on S u g a r Cane were d e s t r o y e d when a r o d e o ground and b a l l p a r k were p u t i n i t s place. P e o p l e working t o g e t h e r f o r o u r b a s i c needs, looking a f t e r each o t h e r , l o o k i n g a f t e r t h e e a r t h and i t s inhabi t a n t s - t h i s is a centuries-old p h i l o s o p h y t h a t i s soon t o be r e v i t a l i z e d i n a b i g way. From old house to new The article, "Solving a Design Dilemma," by Ann Barling (New I I o m e s s e c t i o n , Nov. 2 ) , described a new duplex by architect James Fensom as a 6'modern design with historical links to the original house." It stated that the lot on Prior Street on which Mr. Fensom built the new house contained "a tumbledown old house that nevertheless had been given a heritage B classification." In fact, the old house would have been classified as an "A," except that its porch needed repair and it needed a coat of paint. It was, however,one ofthe most stylistically intact and historic cottages in the Strathcona area, and it would soon have had its 100th birthday, had it not been for Mr. Fensom.

Other builders were interested in restoring the cottage, and so reinforcing the historic character of Strathcona. But he beat them to the punch a ~ demolished ~ d it. The article went on to state that "the duplex is designed to fit in with the older, tall, skinny buildings in the area," but the photograph showed a building bearing a striking resemblance to an overturned flat-bottomed boat. The old house had a front porch with three sets of double columns, and a steeply pitched roof featuring a highly decorated bargeboard. The new house has an almost-blank stucco front facade with two strips of tall skinny windows.
