Alderman P u i l was r i g h t when he s a i d t h a t t h e s e people had made s e r i o u s d e p a r t u r e from t h e necessa r y methods of handling p u b l i c money. So you would t h i n k t h a t w i t h $66,000 , t h e Carnegie Community Centre would put i n a couple of benches on t h e Hastings S t . s i d e of t h e b u i l d i n g on Carnegie p r o p e r t y . With benches, t h e Carnegie could a s k people n o t t o s i t on t h e c e n t r e ' s t e p s b l o c k i n g e n t r a n c e s . This h a s b e e n ~ l ad a i l y problem. People may o c c a s i o n a l l y d r i n k on t h o s e benches, b u t people d r i n k anywhere anyway. We a r e concerned about t h e d e t e r i o r a t i n g s t a t e of o u r ecology t h a t may soon l e a d t o i r r e p a r a b l e damage t o p l a n t and animal l i f e and even t o t h e whole of mankind. We a l s o r e a l i z e t h a t t h e d e s t r u c t i o n of t h e b a l a n c e i n n a t u r e b r i n g s p r o f i t t o a few and u n t o l d misery t o many. Through t h e p r o c e s s e s of community e d u c a t i o n we b e l i e v e t h a t t h i s can b e changed and even r e v e r s e d . We a r e concerned about t h e r i s i n g m i l i t a r i s m i n t h e world. !Je d e p l o r e t h e c o n t i n u i n g i n c r e a s e i n arms spending w h i l e many p e o p l e i n t h e world d i e i n hunger and d i s e a s e . We d e p l o r e t h e p r o l i f e r a t i o n of n u c l e a r weapons i n c o u n t r i e s and by governments who t h i n k t h a t they can t a k e o u r d e s t i n y i n t o t h e i r hands. We condemn t h e use of m i l i t a r y might t o s u p p r e s s t h e l e g i t i m a t e demands of p e o p l e and c a l l f o r an immediate end t o t h i s , s i n c e i t i s an o b s t a c l e t o genuine and l a s t i n g peace. We a r e concerned a b o u t t h e slow p r o c e s s e s by which t h e r i g h t s of women and c h i l d r e n , e t h n i c m i n o r i t i e s , and t h e d i s a b l e d a r e recognized and promoted. Perhaps you a r e one of t h e many l o c a l people who d o n ' t g e t t o t h e new 7 a c r e w a t e r f r o n t p a r k a t t h e f o o t of Main. The F e d e r a l P o r t of Vancouver Crown Corporation made t h e e n t r a n c e t o t h e overpass too s t e e p . The grade of s t e e p n e s s r e a c h e s 20% i n s t e a d of t h e promised 8-10%. The c i t y l e g a l department should be f i n d i n g o u t where t h e $600,000 P o r t extra-fund f o r c o r r e c t i n g b u i l d i n g e r r o r s t o t h i s overpass i s . T h a t ' s a l o t of s p a r e change t o l o s e . The P o r t , a f t e r promising t o make a t l e a s t a few minor changes t o t h e Main o v e r p a s s , have now r e f u s e d t o do s o . Now they s a y they w i l l w a i t u n t i l t h e Canadian Human R i g h t s Commission d e c i s i o n i s made. Joan M e i s t e r , a woman i n a wheelc h a i r from S t r a t h c o n a , h a s charged the Port with violating her r i g h t s t o e q u a l a c c e s s t o t h e CRAB Park. This i n v e s t i g a t i o n by t h e Commiss i o n t a k e s 4 - 9 months. So t h e P o r t of Vancouver P o l i c e decided t o i n v e s t i g a t e M s . M e i s t e r and asked many p e r s o n a l q u e s t i o n s about h e r . On November 1 9 t h , a t c i t y h a l l ' s T r a n s p o r t a t i o n and S t r a t e g i c Planning Committee, t h e r e was a 2-1 v o t e a g a i n s t a t o u r i s t - p e d e s t r i a n overpass t o t h e p a r k from C a r r a l l S t . A C a r r a l l St. overpass i s too f a r t o t h e w e s t . t o b e used by many downtown e a s t s i d e f o l k . The i n t e r section t o a C a r r a l l St. overpass f o r pedestrians only is c a l l e d a 11 suicide'' i n t e r s e c t i o n . S t u d i e s have shown, s a y t h e BCCD's Crab P a r k Access Committee r e p o r t , t h a t North Americans would n o t u s e

I have known DON BATEMAN s i n c e he f i r s t came t o t h e Carnegie Centre. F i r s t he w a s a v o l u n t e e r and then he became a s t a f f person. He has been on s t a f f , f o r 4 y e a r s , mostly worki n g on t h e second f l o o r . He has always worked hard, running back and f o r t h t h e way you do, working on t h e second f l o o r . He h a s been t h e f a v o u r i t e s t a f f person i n Carnegie. Many v o l u n t e e r s know him p e r s o n a l l y , on and o f f t h e job. He h a s a joke f o r everyone and I always s e e him i n a good mood. Of c o u r s e , sometimes t h e r e a r e f r u s t r a t i o n s , due t o t h e n a t u r e of t h e job. Don h a s done a l o t of o t h e r jobs around t h e Carnegie, such a s c l e a n i n g out t h e lost-and-found and re-organi z i n g cupboards. He i s m o b a b l y t h e o n l y person who knows where t o f i n d everything. He has organized a number of campi n g t r i p s , and t h e Canada Day P i c n i c . I w a s v e r y s u r p r i s e d t o h e a r t h a t Don was " l e t go" and n o t knowing any det a i l s , I wanted t o w r i t e t h i s l e t t e r of s u p p o r t f o r Don.
