a The map we inherited isn't any good. The old roads mislead and the landscape keeps changing. People are confused and drift from place to place, clothes scorched by fire eyes red with smoke. The old map tells us to look for gold in the City, so we go to the City and find the garbage dump. We need a new map with new roads and a new destination. Some people fear a new map, and they cling to the old one like flies to fly paper. But the old map leads to pepper spray tear gas gulags death camps, and the end of the world. 1don't have a new map, so I write stories. The stories draw lines dig holes and above all, remember. "Let people know who we are; tell them what happened to us," an old Mayan woman in Guatemala said. (1)

"And in this harsh world draw your breath in pain to tell my story," Hamlet said to Horatio. "I seem not to speak the official language," the poet Adrianne Rich said, so she created an unofficial language, the language of the heart. Drawing a new map is like singing. Voicehandler asked Loon why she talked so much and Loon replied, "Well, Sir, i'm not just talking to my own ears. The spirit-beings tell me that they have no place to live. That's the reason I keep talking." (2) Loon sings the sacred into the world ' and creates a new map. Sing your song, friend. Tell your story. The map we inherited isn't any good. The old roads mislead. We need a new map. Sandy Cameron ( I) (2)

Council of Canadians water campaigner Emma Lui at the Fraser River in British Columbia. The Trudeau government-approved Kinder Morgan pipeline would cross the lower portions of the Fraser River, North America's primary salmon-producingjish habitat. ernment to dramatically strengthen environmental reviews and water protection measures in its recently tabled Bill C-69 that would govern the reviews of proposed tar sands pipelines, mines, hydroelectric dams and transmission lines. The Globe & Mail reports, "Scientists and advocates worry there is no clear guidance under which projects would be turned down because of environmental impacts. Instead, the minister of environment or, in some cases, the federal cabinet, will have discretion to declare a project to be in the national interest & approve it, regardless of the findings of the impact assessment" The article adds that the Liberals have been criticized for approving the 890,000 barrel per day Kinder Morgan pipeline ~d that "measures announced to date by federal and provincial governments are not sufficient to meet Ottawa's commitment to reduce emissions by 30 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030, and Ottawa has committed under the United Nations Paris accord to adopt an even tougher target." The article notes that Justina Ray of the Wildlife Conservation Society Canada says "there is no requirement for Ottawa to conduct regional or strategic assessment, and no clear indication how such studies, when completed, would guide project proposals." Megan Leslie of the World Wildlife Fund Canada says "the factors to be weighed by the minister all just seem to be factors, I don't see anything in here that indicates a 'no go,' that a project won't happen because
i.f
these are environmental considerations beyond the pale. In this campaign blog, Council of Canadians water campaigner Emma Lui highlights, "The amendments to the Canadian Navigable Waters Act fall short of what Indigenous nations, environmental groups, residents and other organizations called for during the Standing Committee review which included restoring protections on all lakes and rivers and obtaining free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous nations. A closer look at the bill shows pipelines and power lines are still exempt from the act and raises questions about whether the act protects all waterways from dam projects." She also notes Bill C-69: 1- does not provide the modern safeguard of protecting water beyond human use. 2- maintains a schedule of navigable waters, that it's unclear which waterways are on that schedule, & that waterways can even be removed from that schedule. 3- gives the minister the power to approve an activity (including an unauthorized dam to be used for fracking) after it has begun. 4- puts the onus on the individual to protect a waterway not listed in the schedule in the dispute resolution process. 5- mentionsa public registry without specifying what information would be required for it thus undermining public participation in the process. 6- does not include modern safeguards as promised by the Liberals during the October 2015 federal election. The Council of Canadians calls on the Trudeau government to: 1- correct the concerns Lui raises (by respecting free, prior and informed consent; protecting all waterways; strengthening the public participation process & more) 2- table new water protection legislation that enshrines the United Nations recognized 'obligation to protect' drinking water from being polluted. 3- protect the Fraser River and 1,300 waterways by rejecting the Kinder Morgan pipeline. 4- protect the oceans and the endangered right whale by banning offshore oil and gas drilling. 5- rather than legislating a 2-year review deadline for oil and gas project approvals, commit to the deadline of a 100 per cent clean energy economy by 2050. 6- appoint a water minister who would have the key role of advocating for the protection of water in cabinet decision-making on major resource projects.
John Volken Academy: Therapeutic Community for Drug and Alcohol Addiction In 2014, John Volken, founder of the John Volken Academy, was awarded the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award in recognition of his outstanding work creating 3 therapeutic communities for drug & alcohol addiction recovery. He has constructed academies in Surrey, BC, Canada, in Seattle, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona with his own wealth. Each academy has conjoined work environments for the participants to have on-the-job training. Recently, Steve and I had the honour of touring the premises in Surrey, BC, and also the 60,000-square-foot store that is connected, called PricePro, with groceries, household goods, and furniture. We were really impressed with .. the incredible dedication and care that has gone into this academy for ones who are struggling with issues of addiction. The welcoming words on the John Volken Academy home page encourages those who are ready for change that it's possible: "Walk alongside others in this holistic, long-term recovery program. Change your lifestyle. Earn an education and career training Learn more about the Therapeutic Community model and how you can overcome addiction. "
**** John Volken's History Born in December 1941 in Potsdam, a city that became part of communist East Germany, John was only 3 years old, when his father, a medical doctor, died during the Second World War. Due to extremely limited finances John's mother put him and his two brothers in an orphanage for a short-time where he experienced the camaraderie of"30 brothers". In 1960, at the age of 18, John immigrated to Canada with $100 in his pocket. He did odd jobs while learning English, and then sought a career in sales. In 1981, he opened a small retail operation selling used furniture and other used goods which he named United Buy & Sell Service. Soon he began selling only new furniture, and after opening a few more outlets, he changed the name of his stores to United Furniture Warehouse. Over the next 20 years, United Furniture Warehouse expanded to more than 150 stores with annual sales of$200 million.
**** In 1998 he began researching social issues, wondering what he could do to make a difference, and discovered there was a need for long-term, residential treatment and life-skills training for those struggling with alcohol and drug addictions. John visited and studied numerous facilities in the United States and Europe that provided such services. In 2004, John sold United Furniture Warehouse and began devoting himself full-time to his foundation's charitable endeavour of creating therapeutic communities for those suffering from extreme addiction. A 2-year treatment program is offered to those between the ages of 19 and 34 (there can be some flexibility with age) and other than a small one-time admittance fee (this can be waived), the entire cost, as well as all members' basic living expenses, are paid for by John's Foundation. Focusing on 7 Key Development Areas that create full recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, participants come to balance mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually gaining the ability to comfortably integrate back into family and community without their former addiction issues. John is often asked about his charitable work. "Helping others has brought me tremendous joy and satisfaction. I believe that once we have provided for our families, we should then work for the good of all. .. You believe that there is one God, thou doest well the devils also believe and tremble. These words speak of the faith of devils. They too believe that God exists and have to exercise the element of faith to do so. This being because they cannot see him. This tells us that we can extrapolate the existence of at least 3 planes of existence. The one in the which man has his being, and another in the which angels operate, and now we have another in which the Father himself moves. Apart from these three we can only speculate on the existence of other operative realms. Perhaps they are infinite, in any event who is to stop God from recognizing as many realms as He wishes. This faith exercised by angels is a curious phenomenon that I dare not tread upon and entrust the matter to the Father Himself which thing I believe is right. Let the Lord deal with these things which are beyond the grasp of lowly, yet boastful mankind. Another concern of mine is the simple formula infinity-no Men have long looked upon creation as being adding to infinity, in that we have 1+ 1= 2,1+2=3, 1+3=4 etc. one being the infinite. But as infinity cannot be added to as it is complete, then how do we explain being? Has a man been added to infinity or has he been extrapolated out of infinity? Infinity -a measure agreed upon = being. Here I say a measure agreed upon as being let's say 5'10". and again 100 kilos and a in intelligence factor of Q. The height is measured within the infinite and yet outside of it. Weight must be measured out-tof infinity and set at the 100 kilo level and intelligence measured out of omniscience as Q. All these variables can be adjusted as to create beings of so much of this and so much of that. But they exist within infinity and not out of it and yet measured apart from it. These variables are placed within infinity as points of being. As every place within the infinite is exactly the middle of infinity, each point becomes a personality to which can now be invested with a name, Adam. So we are all points of being within the infinite with variables which express our being and we are invested with names to identify ourselves. Hello who are you? Randy Mclvor
'What to do, what to do, what to do ... Do you get jaded? Does it seem pointless to go to one more meeting, have another rally, demonstrate, protest, see progress only in terms of not losing more? For the last month or more it has been a time of waiting ... and reading of meetings, rallies, demonstrations, protests, and sensing the seeming futility of it. But that may just be brain-washing!? The demonstrations against "free" trade (TPP) and internet control and neoliberalism and pipelines - and you have the power of the richest, most powerful people on the planet meeting inside steel fences and an army of police & tear gas & water cannons and complete repression of civil society's response. It's presented as a sideshow by media, all reports focused on the seeming mindlessness of crowds just trying to force their way past a "protective" barrier. Remember when the World Trade Organisation was stymied by tens of thousands of people protesting the exclusion of the majority by the elite minority. The presentation has the civilized trade delegates being accosted by unruly, incoherent and often dangerous radicals. The whole idea is to generate disdain for the protestors. The issues and reasons for so many people voicing outrage are impossible to convey in 3-5 second sound bytes or even in the space of a newspaper story. Thatthese very reports & stories are biased and edited to convey the same kind of impression of the dissidents being kind of whacko is so pervasive that the point is too obvious to state or even rail against. And the impression is that it was pointless, that nothing came of it all but a few people getting gassed. The non-reported and unrelated outcome is the education
gotten by those involved, experience with the status quo power and the real lengths that are being taken to fundamentally change the way of things (climate change, corporatism v democracy) There is no magic wand. Every issue - the cost of housing and the labour movement and management playing a shell game with accountability and the obvious pain & suffering of the poor, seniors, disabled, working people and a hundred thousand other reasons to settle it at once fall on unmoved ears of those who are intent on another agenda of big companies, oil, breaking a union, of seeing a different result that isn't in the best interests of anyone but the already well-off. - cl earcut logging & the stupidity of denuding all old growth and allowing the biggest companies to be as brutal as profit-maximization warrants, while smaller scale and more labour intensive selective logging is laughed at as uneconomical - by the owners of the same biggest companies. -homelessness and the need for low-cost, decent housing and governments' refusals to make it a priority or even address the real need. Rallies and declarations of "not taking it anymore" seem almost futile again, but it's listening to each other and trying to find a way to get what's needed. What gets to be hum is hearing people ranting the good rant and of course nothing changes. And here's the rub: the perception is that nothing changes because the instant gratification we've been getting programming to expect has the picture not changing much from yesterday or last week to today or this week. Struggle is the essence of life. We join together to first learn what th~ present situation is - forming a vision of a better future can be just so much wishful thinking without a practical way of achieving it or even taking steps towards it. Just protesting that everything in the present is wrong can leave you bitter and very much disappointed at the futility of rants and rallies, but that's outlook too. The actions over the cost of housing have gotten no immediate resolution, but they have been in no way useless On a note equally close to home, the perception is that nothing done so far about the drug problem in this neighbourhood has changed anything - that it just gets worse. "We have to take a stand. We have to decide on what has to happen and keep at it." What this usually translates as is not wanting to see the evidence
7
of drug use, nor having to walk through the street scene of drug use, dealing, rootlessness, poverty, and 'why aren't they being arrested' and 'why aren't (whoever) doing their job' and so on. Maybe before blaming everybody, ask yourself "What solution do you suggest? What are workable and practical steps to take? Who or what will you be up against if you follow that course?" The creativity and talent of residents is boundless, yet we have to be careful not to turn on each other. In the coming months there are going to be so many changes brought in by the government that a whole new era of citizen response will begin. Whenever a government cuts education, cuts welfare, guts scores -of social programs .. all the negatives rise dramatically - poverty, homelessness, suicide, evictions, slave labour, drug testing to get assistance, literacy tests to ge work, and so on being met with demonstrations that are brutally put down by armed police. You and I and all of us have to respond but keep making plans for a better time. Advice can be ajoke, but don't give up. By PAULR TAYLOR

Fire Writers' Book Launch
From the LibrarY With Black History month in full swing 1 seems timely to share out some new books regarding social movements, history and even popular culture led by the black community.
The Fire Writers meet every Wednesday from 11 :30 12:30 in the learning Centre on the 3rd floor. They have just published a collection of their work from 2017 called "Fire Writers & Friends". containing the work of 11 individuals, and are having a BOOK LAUNCH on Tuesday February 20 from 3:00 - 5:00. They will be giving the 3rd floor gallery space a cafe atmosphere (tablecloths and candles!) with entertainment, live music and readings.
Aphro-ism: essays on pop culture, feminism, and black veganism from two sisters (2017) by Ko Aph. Considered
a ground-breaking
work, this collection of
essays explores social theories of pop culture from a youthful black perspective. It is anti-racist & pro animal rights with the intention of dismantiing oppression. The Blood of Emmett Till (2017) by Timothy B. Tyson. While this book is catalogued as True Crime, Tyson re-examines the event that launched the civil rights movement, being the lynching of 14 year-old Emmett Till in 1955 with integrity. Through recovered court transcripts and a contemporary lens, the reader has a better understanding of both the past and our current times.
Defining Moments in Black History: reading between the lies (2017) by Gregory Dick. Considering that Gregory is a comedian, activist and conspiracy theorist this title is a candid recounting of key moments in black history, in particular Civil Rights - often tragic, but very inspiring! The Origin oJ Others (2017) by Toni Morrison. Morrison is a literary force, and in her most recent title she targets race, notions of racial purity, fear, borders, the mass movement of peoples, and the desire for belonging, and she looks to literature for guidance.
The Original Black Elite: Daniel Murray and the story of aforgotten era (2017) by Elizabeth Dowling Taylor. According to the NY Times, this book is "an emotional story of how race and class have long played a role in determining who succeeds and who fails." This book reveals and condemns the anti-black legislation in America and highlights the story of Daniel Murray - born free in 1851. Your librarian,
Natalie

Success! Can we do it again? On Saturday, December 16,2017, the volunteers of the Carnegie Association Board held a DTES Survival Skills Resources Fair in the theatre. Anyone who lives here knows surviving in the Downtown Eastside is an art. Finding what you need can be frustrating and challenging. So we figured some pointers to start you in the right direction might be useful: r: where to (try to) obtain housing , resolving tenant's rights issues , find good. cheap food , get legal advice , dealing with Welfare roadblocks, etc. We invited people from many organizations to staff a table and dispense information and advice including: , dealing with bedbugs & other unwelcome critters , Tenants' Union , Carnegie Community Action Project r: Wheel in' Mobility , Raise the Rates , SRO Collaborative , avoiding scams , welfare advice ,... how to fill out government forms Âť: and more' Thanks to Vancity. the Carnegie Community Centre Association, I.C.B.C. and the helpful staff at Army & Navy. the volunteers who organized the Survival Skills Resource Fair were able to distribute goodie bags -- filled with useful & practical stuff -- to the people who joined th~m in the theatre. Hot coffee and muffins were served. along with fresh fruit and hard-boiled eggs. There were also resource guides and Iiterature that people could pick up and take home for future reading. We were pleased to see a good turnout and people said that they came away having learned stuff that would be immediately helpful. so we plan to host another Survival Skills Resource Fair in 2018. But we need to do a little fine tuning and. unfortunately, less than a dozen people filled in a feedback survey form before leaving the December Resource Fair. So. we have a favour to ask you .....
Please take a few minutes to answer these three questions and, when you're done, please give the answers to someone at Carnegie's Front Desk. If you have some ideas that would make the next DTE Survival Skills Resource Fair better than the next one, we'd like to hear from you! -- Lisa David
THREE QUESTIONS about the
DTES Survival Skills Resource Fair What things from the December 16th Resource Fair would you like to be part of the next Resource Fair?
Do you have any suggestions on how to improve something that.was part of the December 16th Resource Fair?
What would you like to see at the next Resource Fai that was not part of the last one?
Please give your answers to a staff member at Carnegie's Front Desk and ask them to pass it on to the Carnegie Association Board. Thank you!
