L o c a l duck a c t i v i s t , M a r j o r i e M a l l a r d d i e d on December 2 5 t h when s h e became a C h r i s t m a s d i n n e r f o r a hungry Pigeon P a r k wino. F r i e n d s of M s . M a l l a r d a r e c a c k l i n g t h a t t h e dead d u c k ' s demise w a s a r e s u l t o f Fowl ( s i c ) P l a y . M a r j o r i e M a l l a r d was b o r n and r a i s e d a t P h e a s a n t Pond, Oregon t o a f a m i l y o f s a l t y q u a c k e r s . I n 1986, h e r b o y f r i e n d , T e r e n c e McTeal became a c a s u a l t y o f t h a t community's on-going f e u d between t h e M a l l a r d s and McTeals, a f t e r which s h e f l e d t h e Pond, n e v e r t o s p e a k t o h e r f a m i l y a g a i n . M a r j o r i e f l e w n o r t h , coming t o Vancouver, and had been a r e s i d e n t o f t h e Downtown E a s t s i d e e v e r s i n c e . Soon a f t e r a r r i v i n g h e r e , M s . M a l l a r d formed t h e Downtown E a s t s i d e B i r d A l l i a n c e (DEBA) t o promote b e t t e r l i v i n g c o n d i t i o n s f o r t h e a r e a ' s f e a t h e r e d r e s i d e n t s . One o f t h e many t h i n g s t h a t M a r j o r i e and h e r DEBA members d i d was t o s t a g e a wing-ding Fly-In a t H a s t i n g s and Main i n t h e i r u n s u c c e s s f u l a t t e m p t t o h a v e p i g e o n r o o s t s i n s t a l l e d i n s i d e C a r n e g i e C e n t r e . The c e n t r e ' s d i r e c t o r Nancy J e n n i n g s t o l d DEBA t h a t " C o n t r a r y t o t h e o p i n i o n s o f a few, C a r n e g i e i s not f o r t h e b i r d s " . One mourner, S e b a s t i a n S e a g u l l , was h e a r d t o remark t o a f e l l o w mourner t h a t " F i r s t i t was c h i c k e n s and t u r k e y s b e i n g r o a s t e d . Now i t ' s d u c k s . W h a t ' s n e x t ? Are we a l l t o become open t a r g e t s f o r P o t - s h o t s from Quack-pots?".

What i s e a s i l y s e e n by n o n - r e s i d e n t s as a "hopeless" t a s k - o f j u s t keeping t h e area c l e a n and ' p r e s e n t a b l e 1 i s an outlook n o t s h a r e d by a t l e a s t ane longtime r e s i d e n t : TONY GORDON WILSON. He p r o c e e d e d t o p e r f o r m a one-man t o r n a d o a c t on t h e junk i n t h e a l l e y . (The pads and h a t were t o a v o i d i n j u r y from f a l l i n g j u n k o n c e a TV went o u t i n t h e w i l d b l u e yonder.) Tony h a s s a i d t h a t h e does t h i s s e r v i c e throughout t h e a r e a i f h e s e e s t h e n e e d and t h a t p e o p l e , s e e i n g him working, o f t e n s t o p t h e i r bad h a b i t o f chucking s t u f f when t h e a r e a o f d e p o s i t i s c l e a n e d u? by a l o c a l . Impressions of

f o r t h a t ' s what i t was: a n i m p r e s s i o n i s t i c evening of s w i r l i n g masks, g l i t t e r y costumes, res o u n d i n g drums, t i m i d t i t t e r s , and g u t f e l t guffaws. 'Animal Q u a k e r s ' ..the sign over t h e stage i n the Theatre mistakenly proclaimed. Though I a m s u r e t h a t t h e Quakers would b e proud t o c l a i m t h i s p e a c e f u l and p a c i f i c - i s t e v e n t , I' Animal Quackers" i s t h e real a n d * r i g h t f u l a p p e l l a t i o n o f t h e eveni n g ' s montage. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , I missed t h e a p p e a r a n c e o f M r . Big (Vander Scam) on t h e v a r i o u s C a r n e g i e s t a i r w e l l s . But I am s u r e t h a t I can r e a d h i s p r e s s r e l e a s e s i n t h a t a c c u r a t e and v e n e r a b l e newswine, t h e P r o v i n c e . Happily, I d i d n ' t m i s s Agnus Mudd (Gretchen P e r k ) b l u s t e r i n g s c o t t i s h l y , a t 8:37 p r e c i s e l y , l a d d i e s and l a s s i e s . 'Tippy' and " t h e s o c i e t y o f humane drums, b e t t e r known as t h e humane drum s o c i e t y " , w e r e i n t r o duced by t h e s a u v e and g a l l a n t M.C. (Glen W a t t s ) . The drummers p e r formed a Nootka drum c h a n t , w h i l e a l l o f t h e c r a z i l y - c l a d crew i n v i t e d a u d i e n c e members t o j o i n i n and dance. The v i b e s were d e f i n i t e l y catchy!

A f t e r w a r d s , t h e e e e v i l impish G i b r e t s i m (Archer Mayling) (Get i t ? G i b r e t s i m i s M i s t e r B i g backwards; oh I know; you knew a l l a l o n g , r i g h t ) conned u s i n t o p l a y i n g s h u t - e y e , w h i l e h e kidnapped a l l t h e c u t e l i t t l e s i t t i n g ducks ( c h i l d r e n o f t h e Ray-Cam Latchkey Program). Poor, b u t NOT u n d e r f e d Madama Mama Beezebo (Nancy Lee Warneck) was i n a tailspin. The g l o b e on h e r head bobbled p r e c a r i o u s l y . Her humongous ducky body quaked w i t h g r i e f a s s h e quacked o u t t h e crowd e l i v e r e d message: G i b r e t s i m had h e r c h i l d r e n ducked away, and a w a i t i n g t h e f i n a l plunge i n t o a b o i l i n g c a u l d r o n ! Egad, what t h e Duck can s h e do? A s f a t e would have i t , Downtown Duck ( a r e s o u n d i n g n o t e o f a p p l a u s e ) f l e w t o t h e r e s c u e and ducksuckered e e e e v i l G i b r e t s i m i n t o cooking i n h i s own duck soup. The l i t t l e s i t t i n g d u c k l i n g s f l o c k e d m e r r i l y home t o Madama Mama, who c l u c k e d w i t h delight. To c e l e b r a t e t h i s happy e n d i n g , t h e drummers b e a t t h e i r s k i n s and t h e crowd j o i n e d i n on some h i p q u a c k i n g movements. Meanwhile, M r . B i g Baby, bedecked i n b a r e l y a b i k i n i and a Bermuda b r o n z e t a n , w a s wheeled away i n a baby c a r r i a g e , s q u a l l i n g and g r i m a c i n g j u s t l i k e h e does on TV...sound c o n f u s i n g ? W e l l , a t t i m e s i t was, b u t t h e s p i r i t o f t h e e v e n i n g and t h e beaut i f u l o u t r a g e o u s n e s s o f t h e masks and costumery, b r o u g h t some b a d l y needed s o l a r e n e r g y i n t o t h e s h o r t e s t A feather i n the day o f t h e y e a r . c a p of t h e c a s t and crew! And t o t h o s e who missed i t , w e l l , s i t on y o u r a x i s and s p i n ! P-j

H i s e y e s a r e red-rimmed, b u r n t e a r t h o f a l l h i s hopes, f a i l e d f i e l d s y i e l d i n g n o t h i n g b u t a n e x h a u s t e d answer. S a t i s f i e d , i t s o r t s o u t crumbs, n o t s e e i n g t h e p i g e o n s have n o t even paused. Some f o l k s n e v e r f i t . Not n o t i c i n g , t h e y f e t e t h e wrong c e r e m o n i e s , f i g h t i n wrong c o r n e r s , go j a u n t i l y i n t o n i g h t , b e l i e v i n g i t day.
