IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN Every o r g a n i s a t i o n needs t o t a k e time out t o s e e whpre it has been 6 where i t ' s going. Even so unique an o r g a n i s a t i o n a s t h e Carnegie Conlmunity Centre Association has t o do t h i s every year. On Sunday, June 20, we w i l l b e holding our Annual General Meeting. This i s t h e occasion when t h e Board e x p l a i n s what i t h a s been doing f o r t h e p a s t year, & t h e members d i s c u s s i s s u e s a f f e c t i n g t h e f u t u r e of t h e Association. .What kind of year h a s it been? A s usual, I it has been very busy f o r t h e Association. The b i g g e s t s i n g l e event was t h e renovations i n Carnegie. F i n a l l y 1 We now have more room i n t h e b u i l d i n g a brand-new I l a n e l e v e l , with a b e a u t i f u l s e n i o r qs 1 lounge & poo) room. Plus, t h e k i t c h e n h a s 1 been completely modernized I the" a i r condi t i o n i n g througRout t h e b u i l d i n g has been overhauled. bers while t h e renovations were going on, & t h e d e d i c a t i o n of a l l t h e v o l u n t e e r s & s t a f f who contributed t h e i r i d e a s & energy But i t ' s not over y e t . I n t h e coming year, we w i l l s t a r t on planning t h e improvement of t h e l i b r a r y 6 t h e Learning Centre. The Association was involved i n s o many acti:yylties, i t ' s hard t o know where t o begin. Here a r e a few examples:
* We bought new equipment f o r s e v e r a l programs i n t h e b u i l d i n g , i n c l u d i n g a keyboard f o r t h e music program & a b i g new t e n t f o r Oppenheimer Park f o r outdoor eve n t s . We a l s o bought equipment f o r t h e weight room, which had been o u t of commiss i o n dur$6g t h e renovations. * We helped s t e e r Oppenheimer Park i n t o a s a f e r environment. Park s t a f f t e l l us. t h e incidence o f drug d e a l i n g 6 v i o l e n c e i s going down. * We p a i d h a l f t h e c o s t o f v o l u n t e e r o u t t r i p s F, bought c h i l i d i n n e r s f o r volunt e e r s i n five-week months. * We helped fund & p l a n a l l bhe s p e c i a l e v e n t s , l i k e Christmas, New Year's, t h e Anniversary c e l e b r a t i o n E t h e r e n o v a t i o n s 1 open house, * We a r e sponsoring two new programs i n II t h e c o y u n i t y t o g i v e pre-employment t r a i n i n g f o r new immigrants 6 r e f u g e e s . * Through our t o w j h a l l forums 6 o t h e r a c t i v i t i e s , we took p a r t i n a l l s o r t s of community i s s u e s l i k e housing, i n c r e a s ed weJfare r a t e s , t r a f f i c c o n t r o l s , t h e review of a l c o h o l ij drug programs, CityPlan F, t h e End L e g i s l a t e d Poverty workshop * We p u b l i s h t h e o u t s t a n d i n g j o u r n a l of news tj views i n t h e Downtown E a s t s i d e , t h e Carnegie Newsletter. We have a s t r o n g system o f committee%:; where t h e most vigorous d i s c u s s i o n & r e s e a r c h goes on, w i t h recommendations f o r warded t o t h e Board. Every member i s welcome t o come & t a k e p a r t . The committees a r e Community R e l a t i o n s , Program, Finance, Education, L i b r a r y . . They meet once a month b e f o r e t h e Board meeting. Notices o f d a t e s & t i m e s a r e posted i n t h e b u i l d i n g . A t t h e AGM, we w i l l be e l e c t i n g a new 15-member Board. Our Board members t h i s p a s t y e a r have been a hard-working group & d e s e r v e a l o t o f c r e d i t . Anyone can r u n f o r t h e Board, provided you have been a i member 60 days immediately p r i b r t o t h e meeting. That i s , A p r i l 2 1 o r b e f o r e . I t ' s been a d i f f i c u l t l a b o u r r e l a t i o n s y e a r f o r them, b u t t h e y have k e p t up t h e i r h i g h s t a n d a r d s of p r o f e s s i o n a l i s m E d e d i c a t i o n t o t h e community. So I am not going t o p l e a s e t h e c o r p o r a t e masters by picking a f i g h t with S t e v e ' s thought-prbvoking article. Instead, I would l i k e t o commend Steve on r a i s i n g t h e i s s u e of t h e r i g h t t o educa t i o n , e s p e c i a l l y f o r those who have been denied r e l e v a n t education i n t h e p a s t . I would however, l i k e t o p o i n t o u t some f a c t s which observors t o t h e s i t u a t i o n might not be aware o f . A s members of t h i s community, t h e l e a r n ing c e n t r e s t a f f were unanimous t h a t t h e volunteer programs should continue during t h e s t r i k e . In f a c t , some new ESL s t u d e n t s came i n E we gave them union s t r i k e b u l l e t i n s which they read E picked up new vocabulary. Students i n my Welfare Advocacy c l a s s met with me on t h e p i c k e t l i n e s e v e r a l times 6 we discussed t h e l a r g e r i s s u e s of why t h e s t r i k e was taking place E how t h a t would a f f e c t t h e progress of t h e c l a s s . Many more o f our s t u d e n t s came up G d i s cussed s t r i k e i s s u e s with us. We explained why we were supporting t h e t e a c h e r s i n their strike f o r t h e most p a r t patrons E s t u d e n t s supported us. They had many concerns about t h e a c t i o n s of t h e school board i n not maintaining a minimum l e v e l of s e r v i c e s i n t h e i r c h i l d r e n ' s classrooms Much v i t r i o l was lodged a g a f n s t t h e provi n c i a l gov't f o r not a c t i n g sooner than it did, Pt seemed t o me t h a t t h e Learning Centre was not r e a l l y c l o s e d down f o r 3 weeks because educational a c t i v i t y was going on. Paulo Freire's most famous book Pedagogy of t h e Oppressed det a i l s t h e t h e o r i e s h e developed through work with t h e r u r a l poor of B r a z i l , work which l e d t h e government t o e x i l e him from B r a z i l . Education & l i t e r a c y work must enable t h e l e a r n e r s t o "name t h e i r world" t o ide n t i f y t h e r e a l f o r c e s of oppression t h a t a r e masked by t h e s t r u c t u r e s i n our capit a l i s t s o c i e t i e s . F r e i r e c r i t i c i z e s much of l i t e r a c y work today f o r adhering t o a "banking concept of education" where s t u dents a r e t r e a t e d a s people who a r e educ a t i o n a l l y d e f i c i e n t , t h u s i n need of "more" knowledge. The banking concept ignores t h e r e a l l i f e experiences people b r i n g t o educational s e t t i n g s & masks t h e f o r c e s of oppression & i n j u s t i c e which a r e a t work.
