WHAT THEY'RF, SAYING ABOUT US By Muggs Sigurgeirson CCCA President Sometimes you can learn a lot about yourself by listening to what other people say about you. The city Social Planning department has issued a report card for Carnegie Centre and our Association that makes very interesting reading. It shows how far we have come in putting our house in order. Three years ago, Social Planning was very critical of the way Carnegie was running. But its new report
The Social Planning report concludes with the recommendation that Carnegie remain under the auspices of Social Planning, and not be transferred to the Parks Board. This is good news because we don't feel that the Parks Board, with its emphasis on recreation rather than social programs, is the right place for Carnegie

More good news is that Parks Board agreesj trio; and has voted sigriificant improvements at Carncgie unanimously that Carnegie should stay with Social Planning. -*Dear Editor; Here 'I go, into the fray - If you have a few minutes, 1'11 give you my two bits worth: abortion. Everyone has their own unique view on this as on every other issue. For the sake of simplicity we tend to see two camps: Anti-Abortion and Pro-choice. The most important thing to know about this division is that they are not opposite. The two camps represent a collision of world-views far more than a difference of basic values. Maureen McCullough, in her recent letter, failed to see the very important distinction here. Because as poor and working-class women we are very much at risk, much less supported and more controlled by the decisions of government, medical, and religious institutions, it's vital to know who is on our side. !%k%!!??~: The Anti-Abortion stance comes out of the long, misogynist history of the Roman Catholic Church (& its offshoots), which has been around and of influence longer than almost all, perhaps all, of the national governments in the world today. The old premise was that women were "the root of all evil" (as the Churchmen had it in Malleus Malefecarum, "Hammer of Witches'' 1500). The Church and the governments it supported worked together to decimate the old native cultures of Europe religious and otherwise. Sexism may be world-wide in some respects, but for mainstream Canadian culture its roots are this divide & conquer of the peoples of Europe, to install not only the disorder of the Christian belief system, but the underpinnings of capitalism and the whole "power-over" sickness obedience to faceless authorities. While removing the local governing systems of the communities, the Church focused its dominating force on women, and whipped up a fury of distrust between the sexes and within these yommunities, to forestall a united front against the decimation of the native cultures. If you have any European blood in you at all, it is not too late to be enraged by what happened and continues to happen worldwide: the destroying of native cultures, theft and destruction of the lands, and the installation of a reality which leads to despair, poverty, suicide, and endlcss interpersonal violence. Only the fringes will say today that women are ''the root of all evil". But they do say that in every instance women must be an open door for the potential of life to be made real: love of life, the right to life, is what they claim for every human being. Yet the whole world-view of the Christian and Christian-influenced is based on death; on distrust and dislike for this life and this body. With the hope that through stern obedience to a faceless and much-disputed authority, the next life will be better. The focus is not on the here and now, but some version of a patriarchal afterlife, The impulse to defend life doesn't extend nearly as loudly'into the anti-puclear, environmental, or anti-war/anti-imperialist movements, and yet these death-dealing forces are much more a threat to all present and future generations than is access to abortion. The impulse to promote life doesn't extend nearly as effectively to eliminating imprisonment; supporting the healing of those in pain mentally, spiritually, or even physically; supporting the majority (the poor) and controlling the minority (the rich, the owning-class); sharing food, water and space (land) globally; ending racism; fostering a truly peaceful co-existence at every level and worldwide. That isn't what the antiabortionists are about, so they cannot claim to be "pro-life''. They are simply against the extension to all women of that fundamental civil right: freedom to govern herself, her life. ?!?h-CUCICD: -------The antl-life attitudes that McCullqugh attributes to the feminists are indeed within the culture, but they are not at hte core of feminist belief. I'm also aware that within Christianity there are many who are truly "pro-life" on all levels (but let them speak for themselves). The hnlf-baked feminism displayed in feminist classics like The Female Eunuch (Germaine Greer) where a good deal of loathing is focused on the reality of woman's body, was and is the result of the internalized self-hate fostered in womeh through our lives in a woman-hating culture. Those of us who have grown up with hte feminist movement (I was b. 1960) continue to be exposed to and formed by soft & hard core misogyny. By "soft" I mean that "God", the politicians and the business controllers are all men, and the role models for women have historically been erased from the books, so that we have Joan of Arc and the last Chinese Empress Dowager as the kind of uninviting possibilities to focus or rather, to deflect - our aspirations to greatness. "Hard" misogyny is sexual esploitation, intimidation and control of women's bodies, minds and lives - I'm talking rape, murder, child-theft, pornography, as well as the low-grade brow-beating that many women are subjected to on a daily basis. Remember that this is our whble lives I'm talking about; these things don't start when we turn eighteen. We live and breathe this culture from birth, and through our mothers' bodies from conception. Feminism is, like all levels of life, a dynamic and changing thing. Class and race realities are very slowly, reluctantly, and through active struggle being incorporated into what was for a long time a middle class white woman's game. Feminist mothers are in general too frigging busy raising our kids, and making ends meet, to be loudly vocal and at the forefront of feminist theorizing. But there are millions of us. We do cherish life, as Maureen McCullough has passionately shared. (Whether or not she's a parent, the feeling's the same.)

LETTERS Recreating a world-view that truly demonstrates this cherishing means breaking through the indoctrination of self-loathing, rediscovering a spirituality that affirms and is deeply connected with this body, and this life. It means renovating all of our relationships so that we can be ourselves, whole, n11,I not wasting our time and strength in arguments over our rights, our perceptions and beliefs. At the same time that this inner strengthening takes place, and the strengthening of the connections between like-minded people at the community-level and worldwide, there is the other reality going on the intimidations and rapes, the destruction of cultures and lands, the institutionalized racism, sexism, ageism, class-hatred. Only at the individual level can it be decided: if I have a kid now, I'll beat her or him to the brink of death, like my mother/father/lover beat me; or, given the time and support for healing: if I have a kid now, I can raise him or her to be a freedom-fighter, to cherish this earth and her people, to start from the centre in a balanced way and promote life at every level. Children learn far more from observation than by direct communication: you have to be able to be free and life-affirming at home, even in your worst moments, if you want your kids to act that out on the streets, in future boardrooms (and bedrooms).

A pregnancy can be seen as a knock at the door, where the child might decide at any time not to come through after all (miscarriage, stillbirth, cribdeath). To be pro-choice means that a woman also has the right to choose: a few might lock the door forever (though hysterectomy is not under ~Lebatein the same way); many, many more will say, "I'm sorry, I just can't let you through right now. Things are very bad for me. If you come back in a few years, I think I'll be ready." Or even, ,,m. I lease. Ask somebodv eise." If words & words only changed the world, all would already be well. Saying that men, the world, "must" change is not, sadly enough, entirely effective. We can influence others, but we can only change ourselves, and even that can be a long, long process. The argument that hte fetus is "not human" is a legal argument, and it is the legal system itself which requires such twisti~igof the truth in order that a woman's right to choose can be entrenched in law. Pro-chioce balances the ideal and the real worlds. I wouldn't force anyone to have a kid. Nor would I forbid it. Havin~a child myself, at a point in my life where it is a safe and good choice for both of us, is one oZ the most cherished, dynamic, and "enriching" aspects of my life.

Pro-lifers should target arms costs We read and hear much about abortion these days and no doubt it is a very serious matter. But so is the manufacturing and selling of arms. If abortion is regarded as murder, then the making of weapons is lo be regarded as mass murder. Therefore, pro-lifers would do well to lobby the government to use the funds allotted for military purposes to create security for pregnant women. For isn't financial insecurity the main factor which often forces womerl to have an abortion? If women could have the assurance that they could raise a child without deprivation, there would be fewer abortions. So, pro-lifers, get to work and get to the root of the problem! THE DRUG JOKE: I guess it's only natural for someone who wants to start an antidrug centre (Carnegie?) to say "Mind & mood drugs always have negative ' consequences" it's just normal to & quite popula'r, , say that, I guess even. ..supported by your government ...y es, there's lots of grant money to be had by people who say such things & that's just normal, I I guess.. ? , My drug experience has been re, stricted to marijuana, hashish, mushrooms, mescaline, LSD, & cocaine, so / I guess I really don't know anything about these drugs that are guaranteed i to always produce negative effects... or, "have negative consequences", as they say. I know that Aldous ~uxley's record of his drug experience, in which he claimed the "doors of perception" were opened for him, is considered very old-fashioned today - & is even , banned in some places. I So, all the reporting & research done by artists & poets, who Joseph 1 Campbell calls "the shamans of today" 1 (& who am I to argue with J.C.?) is i gone, wiped out by the cops & robbers game fools always play with every-

So...this is definitely not the wisdom of a 20th century shaman..No,the elected & paid employees of nighttown do not compute such drug-crazed information. & when I say organic mind-altering substance that grow directly out of spores & seeds in the earth are good to experiment with, & traditionally involve spiritual insights that are necessary today, I am a criminal...not a useful member of the community. When I say all synethic mind-altering substances (lab drugs) should never have been produced in the first place well, that makes me very unpopular with the drug companies & military comanders who ordered such things to be done... But, I must stop raving now, & join my fellow "drug addicts" in opening a few illegal "doors of perception" in the back alley, under the viaduct, or in some small hotel room; nestled in darkness somewhere in the downtown eastside.. Yes, we are criminals only because they say we are, & we heve snmsthfz* 13 iz zc=cn...xe L ~ s z what kind of bullshit's coming down.
