both s i d e s gets e n t i r e l y d i f f e r e n t answers every time. I wonder a t t i m e s what i s s o s e c r e t i v e i n t h i s Centre ... i t ' s w o r s e t h a n Ronnie Reagan and t h e I r a n i a n A r m s Deal. Both s i d e s a r e g u i l t y o f some o f t h e c h a r g e s a b o u t s i t uations they've created. The f i r s t i n c i d e n t happened on t h e s e c o n d f l o o r when I was w a l k i n g w i t h Tony S e a v e r s and we p a s s e d a c e r t a i n i n d i v i d u a l . For me, t h e s u n s i g n a l l e d t h e b e g i n n i n g o f t h e work d a y . The sun's rays reached the horses through t h e cracks i n t h e i r s t a l l doors. F o r them, t h e sun s i g n a l l e d feeding time. I c o u l d h e a r them r u s t l i n g and snorting i n expectation, but today I wouldn't feed a l l of them i m m e d i a t e l y . Today was r a c e day, and t h o s e a n i m a l s c h o s e n t o compete would n o t be fed u n t i l a f t e r t h e y ' d run. I swung t h e u p p e r h a l f o f t h e door open on t h e s t a l l s h o u s i n g t h e h o r s e s t h a t were t o be f e d . The r e m a i n i n g h o r s e s would w a i t i n s e m i d a r k n e s s u n t i l I t o o k them t o t h e showers f o r t h e i r p r e - r a c e
bath. The f e e d i n g d o n e , i t was t i m e f o r me t o c l e a n t h e manure f r o m t h e s t a l l s and add a l a y e r of f r e s h straw. I t would seem t h a t many people a t t h e Centre, i n c l u d i n g some Board members, h a v e f o r g o t t e n how d e m o c r a t i c r e p r e s e n t a t i o n works. They seem n o t t o be a b l e t o comprehend where a Board memberf s r e s p o n s i b i l i t y l i e s ; t h e y seem a b l e o n l y t o u n d e r s t a n d what t h e y or their representative faction desires. The t r u e f u n c t i o n o f t h e Board o f D i r e c t o r s i s t o do what i s b e s t f o r t h e m a j o r i t y o f C a r n e g i e members, n o t j u s t f o r t h o s e most v o c a l o r t h o s e who a p p e a r a t m e e t i n g s , a l s o t h a t t h e image o f C a r n e g i e should appear a s a respected r e p r e s e n t a t i o n o f t h e Downtown E a s t s i d e . Twyla had bowed l e g s and 'bact k n ~ e sa n d i t was n e c e s s a r y f o r me t o freeze her legs so t h a t she would n o t a p p e a r t o be c r i p p l e d p r i o r t o t h e r a c e . Her n o r m a l g a i t was s t i l t e d a n d choppy. A f t e r f r e e z i n g h e r l e g s , I b a n d a g e d them, b r a i d e d h e r t a i l and p u t o n h e r b r i d l e b l i n k e r s a n d r e i n s . When Twyla was r e a d y , I w a i t e d w i t h h e r i n t h e b a r n u n t i l t h e announce merit was made f o r t h e r a c e . The announcement was made on s c h e d u l e , a n d Twyla a n d I made o u r way t o t h e e n t r a n c e a t the track. Twyla was aware by t h i s t i m e t h a t i t was r a c e d a y . She c o u l d i d e n t i f y r a c e day a s e a s i l y a s s h e could feeding time. I t was j u s t a d i f f e r e n t s e t of s i g nals. I n r e s p o n s e , s h e foamed a t t h e mouth a n d p r a n c e d i n n e r v o u s e x c i t e m e n t and f e a r . The crowd t h a t day was t y p i c a l : l a r g e , n o i s y and e x c i t ed. Some r a c i n g e n t h u s i a s t watched our p r o g r e s s toward t h e p a d d o c k . He g r i n n e d a n d t r i e d t o p e t Twyla, b u t q u i c k l y w i t h d r e w when s h e jumped from h i s t o u c h . Twyla was n o t a stupid horse. She d i d n o t t r u s t people. Once i n t h e p a d d o c k , Twyla broke o u t i n a nervous sweat. She k i c k e d t h e w a l l s o f t h e s a d d l i n g s t a l l , and i t was
necessary f o r the t r a i n e r t o h u r t h e r i n an i n c o n s p i c i o u s manner s o t h e crowd o f s p e c t a t o r s would n o t n o t i c e . Once s h e was s u b d u e d , T w y l a ' s t o n g ue was q u i c k l y t i e d down s o s h e would n o t s w a l l o w i t d u r ing the race. Then s h e was s a d d l e d a n d mounted. and I l e d h e r toward t h e t r a c k The r a c e b e g a n t y p i c a l l y enough. Twyla r a n i n t h e midd l e o f t h e p a c k . She was n o t a good r a c e h o r s e , and s h e u s u a l l y f i n i s h e d around t h e middle o f t h e p a c k . The t r a i n e r s a i d t h a t her a t t i t u d e held h e r back. Twyla h a d a bad attitude. Now t h e p a c k was r u n n i n g hard. The h o r s e s were making t h e i r way down t h e b a c k s t r e t c h j u s t before the f i n a l turn. The t r a c k was he,avy and i t made r u n n i n g d i f f i c u l t . The pack headed i n t o t h e f i n a l c u r v e w i t h Twyla r u n n i n g a n honest t h i r d . She was n o t i c a b l y f l a g g i n g , however, and t h e p a c e was b e g i n n i n g t o p i c k up. T w y l a ' s j o c k e y was s t a r t i n g t o c r a c k t h e w h i p , coming down t h e home s t r e t c h . Then s u d d e n l y t h e crowd r o a r e d . Twyla h a d gone down. Her j o c k ey was p i t c h e d o f f , b u t r o l l e d t o h i s f e e t almost immediately. Twyla s t a g g e r e d t o h e r f e e t a s t h e remaining horses crossed the f i n i s h l i n e . I t o o k t h e b r i d l e o f f Twyla w h i l e s h e was d e a d w i t h h e r e y e s open. Some women were a b i t d i s s a p o i n t e d t h a t Bharb c o u l d n ' t do h e r o t h e r J o p l i n t u n e s , b u t you c a n o n l y do s o much w i t h two a c o u s t i c g u i t a r s a n d a b a s e a n d drums. Everyone l o v e d Stormy Monday and t h e o l d r o c k s - I e v e n got I n g r i d t o dance! I s a n g b a c k - u p f o r Kansas C i t y , House o f t h e R i s i n g Sun and S t a n d By Me. I was a l s o a s k e d by T e r r y t o do my C a r l Chessman s o n g and my Spectrum F i l m s P4W s o n g . L e s t e r sang two c o u n t r y t u n e s and was e x c e l l e n t a s always.
