Each issue showcases the work of 30 talented photographers from all over the world, either personally selected by our editorial team or received through our online open submissions. In addition to showcasing the work of established professional photographers, Carnival Magazine is dedicated to exposing the creative work of up and coming talents to the industry. We seek to provide a platform for photographers to show their work to the world, in an inspirational creative resource.

EDITORS LETTER / ISSUE 01

Editor’s Letter Welcome to Carnival Magazine Issue 01! Within this very first edition, we showcase the eclectic photographic talents of 30 creatives from around the globe. Over the last few months of curation, we have had the pleasure of working with an amazing archive of photography that will not disappoint! I’d personally like to thank each and every one of our contributors for their participation with Carnival Magazine. I hope that this issue brings you the exposure that your talents deserve. Issue 01s cover photograph belongs to the series ‘Mia Waldern’ by the extremely talented New York City photographer, MARK ELZEY JR. Being one of the first photographers on board with this issue, Mark has been a huge inspiration to the vibrancy of the magazine, featuring within our pre-launch website and being the initial face of our social network artworks. You can find a full feature of his work in Chapter 24 (Ø266). This issue also features an exclusive interview with the wonderful DOMINO., ‘The Shaper’, founder and editor of UmnO Magazine International (Ø150). The interview talks explicitly about his career as an art director and mix media artist, as well as discussing the independent innovation and launch of his ‘Bible of Fashion’ and pop culture magazine. Carnival Magazine is dedicated to exposing up and coming talents into the industry, as well as showcasing established photographers. In the creation of this issue, we have had the pleasure of collaborating with the creative students of Loughborough University, UK (Ø168). We’ve also collaborated with TOMMY NAPOLITANO, who’s work features in Chapter 16 (Ø176), on a Carnival inspired editorial, due to feature in Issue 02. “Originally from Vietnam, New York City based designer Long Tran is on the brink of something new, fresh, and innovative with amazing concepts and top-notch craftsmanship. Whilst designing on his own for nearly 7 years since high school, Long Tran studied at Columbia College in Chicago for Fashion and Design, thereafter moving to NYC and attending Wood Tobe Coburn College as a Fashion Merchandise major. Not being satisfied fully, Long quickly enrolled to FIT for Accessories Design, whilst part-time interning for Maria Cornejo and Zero to get his foot in the door. After that Long said to himself, “It’s time to branch out” and do everything on his own - create his fashion house and bring it to life! Fashion is not dead just yet.”

London-based Russian photographer Aleksandra Kingo is a London College of Fashion graduate. She works on fashion editorials, advertisement campaigns, beauty shoots, lookbooks as well as moving image. Aleksandra’s work is between reality and romanticism. She believes that photography should be personal and loves the possibility of creating any kind of world through her medium. Most of her work is based around human beings and she gains a lot inspiration for themes and concepts from everyday life stories. Aleksandra’s personal style and skills help show a certain presence in her work, which enables room for expression, depth and great imagery. “I like playing with the film in the camera, doing multiple exposures, masking etc. Mostly I use a Pentax ME Super that was my dad’s mums, in fact he nearly threw it out and I stopped him! I was really inspired seeing an exhibition about Miroslav Tichý in New York. I love how he made his own cameras, something I’ve tried to do a couple of times, also I love how he drew his own frames around the images he really liked. It’s nice to see how much of the work of his hands goes into the photos - not just pressing the shutter. Being also a designer I find it interesting creating a story about clothing and what it means to wear it, the identity and belonging that comes from the ways we dress ourselves.”

“I first discovered photography in high school. My high school offered photography classes as an elective. At this time, digital photography was in it’s infancy (it was about 1994), so I learned to photograph on film. In particular, black and white film. I also learned to process and develop my own film in the darkroom. I quickly fell in love with the process and proceeded to take every available photography class my high school offered. I still have my first camera. It’s a Canon AE-1 which is a fully manual SLR film camera.”

“After high school I dabbled in photography here and there, but it wasn’t until 2008 that I attempted to photograph people properly. In 2011, I got my first digital SLR and began shooting as often as I possibly could. These days, I still work a typical, boring job during the week. I do, however, try to shoot as much as possible on weekends.”

“Currently I am a student of Photography in Prague, but in the last year I’ve done a lot, like assist for one of Czech Republic’s best photographers - Bara Prasilova, who also features within this issue of Carnival Magazine. I have also cooperated with magazines and modeling agencies, in addition to working on projects with Academy of Arts Architecture & Design in Prague. “These days I am a student of the Photography Department at Secondary Graphic School in Prague, Czech Republic. If I am honest, I don’t remember much of my early beginnings into the photographic field. I simply remember my fascination for cropping images. I look through my camera, and work to let the real subject of the photo out of the image with the use of negative space in a minimal composition. Then, from this obsession with space, came out let’s say the sophisticated method to post-crop images. This way I am playing with the viewers imagination and adding an intriguing and sense of mystery to the photography I showcase.”

“Two of the leading sets featured within this issue are the Complex Set and the fashion editorial for Antonin Simon (fashion designer). Complex Set is inspired by the place in Prague - it is an extraordinary complex of buildings for diplomats, built in early 90’s. However, it has never been used for this purpose, on top of that facing demolition these days. The purity and curtness in the pictures describes my feelings about the place.”

“The editorial for Antonin Simon (a fashion design student of Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague) is the Collection Tradition. The concept derived from a very old Czech historical act, within which a boy traditionally dressed in a women’s folk costume becomes a man through the celebratory parade. I have sought to capture this sense of transformation in the collections photography, expressed through the transformation process contained in Antonin’s clothing. In certain time and sense, I am letting the boy come out or in, using predominantly the proportion and positioning of the featured clothing, to present the insecurity of decision to become a man.”

“Coming from a background of graphic and fashion design in Spain, I have always been fascinated with still images. While working for professional photographers as a studio assistant and DigiTech in London, and having always been inspired by visual motifs of German expressionist and 80’s horror films, my knowledge of lighting and composition has transformed into a more informed personal aesthetic that I aim to represent in my own work. The idea behind the featured shoot was to represent the beauty of ceremonial body paint in tribalist cultures. This is juxtaposed with a high fashion photo shoot at Iris Studios in London, an amazing and highly recommended studio with the help of one of my good friends and also great photographer, Jack Buster.”

“I love to build my own scene. Of course, I love to find an existing one, but to be honest it’s really hard in my country. I love to work with bulb and lamps around. Sometimes I use LED lamps, combined with daylight to create color effects. With each shoot, I consider the colour combination of whole story before I begin. I am using Nikon D700/800 , 50mm f+.č, 85mm f 1.8, 35mm f +.4. Artists of inspiration include Troy Brooks , Eugenio Recuenco, Mert and Marcus, Steven Klein, Sigur Ros, Parov Stelar and many many more”

Clara is a Peruvian photographer who lives in London. She moved to England in 2002 when she was awarded with the Media and Creative Industries Scholarship by the University of Westminster. This was due to her career as a photographer, beginning aged 18, alongside her outstanding achievements while studying two degrees in the University of Lima. Clara has developed a career as an independent photographer since 2006, working in different areas of commercial photography in the UK. Her first job in fashion came in 2008 when she was hired to shoot a campaign for a British fashion brand. Since then, Clara has built a career as an international photographer shooting for magazines and clients based in Europe, USA and the Middle East.

Tina Picard is a fashion photographer based in Toronto, Canada. She started in the fashion industry in 2009 and since then has been travelling and working internationally. “I’ve been a photographer for coming up to 2 years now, making it my full time profession just under a year ago. Life before was working in finance in the city, advising people and leading teams at Victoria’s Secret, presenting radio shows for the BBC, spoken word shows around the country, amatuer footballing missions, basically doing everything to work out what I actually want in life that uses all my skills.”

“My focus is being the best photographer I can be. There is a bigger picture and hidden agenda, but that will surface naturally in time. “People. The story is people. That one shoot that has a larger luxe feel to it was a shoot for Poster Magazine in Melbourne that never got published. It was based around my one fear of throwing a party and no one showing up, and what I would do if ever placed in the situation. Fret and wait for people, and never one to put a party to waste, party on! I shoot because it is the one thing I can do, that would make me not care what people have to say about it. I love that I can visualise an image in my head and make it happen right in front of me. It is a picture of the inside of my mind. I shoot mostly fashion because there is so much I can do with it. And this being rather superficial, with all the tragedy around the world being captured already on camera, a little materialism and flamboyancy never hurt any one.”

“My very first time with a camera was in Portugal at Festival in 2008. I was so inspired and it really helped me to make the decision to study photography in Poland. I have been a portrait and fashion photographer since 2010, after graduating from the School of Photography in Cracow, Poland. After school I started to work for model agencies. I now work as a full time photographer for the fashion company ‘Answear.Com’, managing their Studio Department. I shoot because I love to create! I know that a photographer can make another reality with camera. I use different cameras - digital, analogue and instant too. When I go for holidays I take only analogue compact camera with bag full of negatives. I’m so inspired with Camila Akrans and Guy Bordin. I love their colours and forms. “My photography is extremely varied. I shoot fashion editorials using digital cameras as well as analogue. I am a big analogue fan and I specialise in old photographic techniques, which I teach. My favourite fashion photographer is Nick Dorey, whose work inspired the lighting for this shoot in Carnival Magazine. Currently, I am also developing a very long-term project called “Borderlands: The Edges of Europe”. Within which, I photograph the borders between European Union countries and non-EU countries. It involves a lot of travelling to remote areas. I photograph everything on a Hasselblad, shooting with film. My father is a successful architectural photographer. However, I went into photography very late. I travelled after high school and moved to London.”

“After my BA I did an MA in photography at Goldsmiths College. Ever since then, I have been working freelance as well as doing my own projects. I also teach photography in few universities, in addition to running photography workshops at the Victoria & Albert Museum every summer! The shoot selected to feature in Carnival Magazine was done at Espero Studio, a Brick Lane studio that specialises in vintage props. I worked on the idea with stylist Joanne Mulcare, selecting a mixture of vintage and new designers to achieve a feminine and intriguing shoot.”

Where are you based? What do you do? Paris is my Nazi base. It is where I operate and shoot. Nobody dies in the process though (kinda). However, visiting NYC every year is compulsory. I like to work on my own photography projects, mostly editorial and artwork. For other photographers I art direct and consult, and always take care of the casting. For UmnO Magazine I have to organize all the logistics apart from the creative side. It’s the most ambitious project that always goes with me. You initially studied Advertising & PRs, where was this? How has this shaped and influenced your career path? In Spain, don’t go and do that. Well, it taught me not to rush important calls definitely. My choice was 100% wrong. Such a boring major, but I finished it despite its lack of relevance. So I guess I learned that - to always persevere. What initially made you turn to the creative industry? When did you realise that this was the journey you wanted to take? What was the Eureka moment? The Eureka moment was to watch, for first time, the original J’adore commercial with Carmen Kass. I wanted to live in that imaginary world. As you grow up, all magic vaporizes way too fast and the world gets smaller. Fashion and cinema are two of the few industries where you can truly create dreamlike dimensions. The human being needs this. Would you say your work captures a sense of escapism and ‘dreams’? How do you channel your dreams into your photography and art direction? I’m simply allergic to reality. I daydream a lot. I spend as much time alone as possible. Listening to music, dancing, singing, talking to myself as I watch movies. I need to listen and look at myself to check whether an idea is worth translating into work or not.

FOR ME, A GREAT PIECE OF ART LOSES ALL ITS PURPOSE IF THE MESSAGE IS UNINTELLIGIBLE

Concepts are crucial to you and your work. How do you ensure to put your initial ideas into action? When I have an idea, I normally dissect it into 3 or 4 concepts that can be used and understood separately. For me, a great piece of art loses all its purpose if the message is unintelligible. All that: “it has many interpretations”, just means it’s empty of any significance. It means that the piece is just cool-looking bullshit. I hate that. You have a beautiful photography portfolio, a collection of which is featuring in Carnival Magazine. Tell us about this work. What is your favourite series and why? Thanks! A mix of Art Direction, Photography and Artwork can be found in this short selection. Whether they come from different photographers or publications, I like to keep a signature look in all projects. This signature is always “The Idea”. I want viewers to be able to spot my concepts. Some artists try to do so using a filter. But they don’t understand there is only one Camilla Åkrans... You are extremely passionate about your work. How has your outlook on life changed from the beginning of your career to now? What have you learnt along the way? You learn a lot about how an industry works. A major breakthrough is realising that you should only release work once it’s (under your eyes) finished. I’ve not yet learned when to stop pushing, though I hope not to do so to be honest. You haven’t learned when to stop pushing, for success? For people. I keep pushing for artist and model agents mostly, to get their time and support for the projects I believe in. It can be annoying for some, but at the end they all bail and collaborate. It’s worth it! Which photographers or creatives inspire you most? At the beginning I was all about Steven Klein and Patrick Demarchelier. Those impossible productions! As I moved along I obsessed over Inez & Vinoodh and David Sims. It’s all about attitude! But, I’m devoted to “The Idea”, so I can’t get Txema Yeste and Steven Meisel out of my mind...

FORGETTING BOUNDARIES AND TREATING THE MAGAZINE LIKE A PERSON WERE THE BEST TOOLS TO DEVELOP A STRONG IDENTITY

You are the founder of UmnO International; tell us how this came about. When did you first decide to launch, create and produce the magazine? I had all these ideas about different style guides that I’d like to see in magazines. So I created a publication for them. These sections were supposed to be quite revolutionary so the name of the magazine had to be very arrogant. “U My Number One” Magazine. It was decided! We love UmnO Magazine’s honest, brutal and arrogant attitude and we’re sure its readers do too. How did you work to develop the magazine’s powerful personality? It was very organic. No business strategy behind it really. Forgetting boundaries and treating the magazine like a person were the best tools to develop a strong identity. When you began UmnO Magazine, what was your vision for the publication? What did you want to achieve? I wanted to create “The REAL Bible of Fashion”. Not because I wanted it to be better than Vogue, but because it was going to be REAL, useful, practical. Yes, UmnO is crazy, but you still can make use of the ideas and trends we showcase. What makes UmnO Magazine different? We go where the rest of the magazines don’t dare to. How’s that for a field trip? Tell us more about the ‘ironic and honest way’ in which you bring your readers ‘original and handy’ content. First of all, the popular magazines have a very hypocrite way of making business out of fashion. 50% of the advertising is not even on the campaign pages or advertorials. People do not know this fact. Advertisers control a lot of what goes into the content of a fashion publication. In UmnO there is NO advertising. There will be in the future. But in no way will we let that get in the way of our editorial voice. Secondly, the ideas and trends we showcase may look crazy in our pages, but our reader can see how to apply this to real life.

Who do you find is your main audience? It was initially conceived for a massive and young audience. The kids that listen to Rihanna and shop at H&M basically. When the fashion professionals started to pay attention to it we reshaped the format but maintained the content. Today, our readers are a mix of fashion industry members and young creatives in different fields. UmnO Magazine prides itself on ‘being the real bible of fashion’. Tell us about the ‘Commandments’. If you look at the most remarkable fashion houses, they represent almost a cult. Take Rick Owens as an example. In 2014, we took that a step further enunciating 10 imposed rules to our way of doing fashion. That makes ‘the cult’ easier to get and follow! Do you have a large team on board at UmnO? Do you art direct and photograph the UmnO shoots yourself? The art direction is always under my wing. A fashion editor needs to be present on every step of the editorial process. Otherwise, the concept gets diluted. I try to stay away from photographing for my own title. That narrows the vision of it. I rather work with different teams, so we take the initial idea where I had never imagined. Last issue counted with the support and collaboration of a team above 200 people. Next one will be sure bigger and keep growing. I’m the one centralizing all productions and content. Wow! How does it feel knowing such a big team of people are working to turn your visions into a reality? It doesn’t feel that big day-to-day, as you work in small teams. When the issue is finished and it’s time to put the credits together you are like, “the hell..?” It is when you reach to more ambitious projects when it gets very exciting. A few weeks ago we finished a film with 37 models in one day.

Here you can find Fashion films, Pop Culture parodies, and our very own Reality: the UmnO Diary. London and NY will always be our main focus. For next issue I’m looking into LA too. I’m very selective with the newsstands, it’s only sold at the cutting edge stockists of both cities. What is the long-term dream, for both you as a creative and for the future of UmnO? For UmnO to be monthly and much more immediate. For both myself and UmnO Magazine, I’ll tell you I have a list of artists I want to collaborate with. But that’s never the last dream of course... Each issue, we feature the work of up and coming photographers, stylists, make up artists and hair stylists, providing an exhibion platform for their creativity by introducing their work to the industry.

We visited Loughborough University to work alongside a team of photographers, stylists and make up artists on an editorial feature for Issue 01. The shoot, ‘Candy’, took place at the Loughborough University Photography Studio Facility and its goal was to showcase a collaboration of creatives from the institution. Carnival Magazine’s editor, Natalie Kaye Goldsmith, curated a team of talented students from the university and also directed the shoot. The series was photographed by both Natalie and Carolyn Brown, an extremely talented Fine Art student and creator of Glitter Box Fine Art Photography. The pair were assisted by Susie Clark and Billie Bryant, who also documented the shoot for Carnival’s blog footage. The ‘Candy’ series screams Spring with its pastel tones and fresh, youthful vibe. The collaborated creatives worked to ensure that the photographs truly captured the fun and energetic attributes of the creatives. The clothing, sourced and collated by stylists Emma Hughes and Katie Brown, was chosen to accent the seasonal feel of the shoot. The featured clothing was kindly donated by New Look, Loughborough. The shoots make up artists and hair stylists worked to a colourful yet pastel palette, experimenting with both glitter and hair chalk to complement the fashion styling.

“For most of the model’s make-up I experimented with pastel colours which created a subtle colourful look which I enhanced at one point by colouring the model’s eyebrows a bright pastel colour. Whilst researching for the shoot, I came across an image of a model whose eyes were accentuated with the abundant use of glitter and thought this would be a fun and suitable idea. The glitter was tricky to work with, but who doesn’t love a bit of glitter to create an impact?!” LAUREN LEFTLEY, MUA.

“I was one of the stylists on the pastel shoot, ‘Candy’, for Issue 01 and it turned out to be the perfect shoot. After an initial meeting with the team about the shoots theme, I was sent out to find all things girly and sweet. Drawing upon the theme directed by Carnival Magazine, I selected a range of outfits from casual day wear to more formal evening wear but tried to maintain a youthful vibe to it all throughout. We were also extremely lucky to receive the support of New Look, who supplied us with a beautiful collection for the shoot.”

On a trip to London, we met with Tommy and his assistant Riccardo Freggia. This extremely vibrant, colourful and bold shoot works with model Clara Botte, elaborately fashion styled by the wonderful Petra Blurr and Serena Mannini. The shoot features the makeup artistry of Michelle Court, founder of Court on Camera Creatives agency. Keep your eyes peeled for the amazing results, coming to Carnival Magazine later this year.

“My first foray into photography was, as far I could recall, when I was a little kid and got my hands on my first camera, one of the disposable Kodak film cameras. The rest is history! I am currently studying a Photography degree in Singapore. ‘Monochrome Infatuation’ plays on subtle homo-eroticism and revolves around the idea of these two seemingly awkward girls having a crush on each other but are too shy to outright express their feelings. Working with two models simultaneously on set was definitely a challenge for me as I had to direct their two poses at once. The shoot was at an abandoned multi-storey car park which had textures that I was looking for - white washed walls with paint peeling off, metal scraps and just an overall greyish and dull vibe.”

“I only started photography a few years ago. I am an artist at heart, a performer and I toured the world with some amazing artists in my life. I also studied interior design. Photography came up on my radar. From my previous backgrounds, I already had the love of images, fashion, design and art. It was love at first site and I dove into it with all my heart. “People cannot fathom that a photographer can shoot more than one thing. So I would say I shoot people - from fashion, to portraits and beyond. Unless the client needs something very specific, I tend to explore a few options to give a wide range of photographs to choose from. It is one of my skills to make anything work if I possibly can. “For me, the ‘Carnival’ (first) story, is the epitome of a perfect day. The sun is shining, a day out at the carnival, flirting and having fun. It was an awesome cooperation and one of my most beautiful shoots so far. The ‘Innocent Rebel’ (previous) and ‘The Second Face’ (current) shows women with two sides. One seems to be very tough and strong because of her tattoos alongside the urban and cold environment, but her posing and the soft light makes her seem sensual and fragile. It is the total opposite with “The Second Face”. The model has a sad face and is in a romantic setting suddenly seems strong and confident because of her mask. I love to play with these kind of stylistic devices.”

“The story featured in Carnival Magazine is about remembering childhood. It’s about two friends who like to dress up, make believe, but who also have a rebellious side as it’s more fun to take dolls apart than to play with them. It was photographed in the city where I grew up, Vilnius, in Lithuania. I was inspired by 90’s style and nostalgia of simpler times. Photography is magic to me, because that’s how you can freeze magic and create other, better realities. My favourite thing is to photograph people, so I focus mainly on portraiture and fashion shoots. For most of my photo shoots I use Canon 5D Mark II, and occasionally my film cameras. Right now it’s Canon AE-1, Fujifilm Instax.”

“Violet is about the portrayal of strong, modern woman in the city. The London model represents the warrior. A little abstract, cold - as the modern life. I took these in Milan, with my concept and styling and the help of agency Flash Model Management and team of creative young people. There is always a union of the moment with experience, with mood, with plans - all together - to get the new results every time. Why? “I love planning the sessions, making a story and making a session look consistent. I love fashion photography. I started with the humble Nikon D3000 but now I shoot with the Canon 5D Mark III. But remember that it’s not the camera that does the photography! It’s you! At the moment my biggest inspiration is Lara Jade. I adore her and her work.”

“The Sejour À Paris editorial, (featured above) was more than chaotic from the beginning to the end. I decided to shoot in Paris over the Christmas period whilst visiting family. However, all attempts to organise a team at this time of year, proved extremely problematic. Thankfully, I managed to arrange a make-up artist, despite being very last minute, only two days before the shoot. I bought the clothes on the day of the shoot, styling the editorial myself. We (the model, make-up artist and I) managed to shoot in five different locations in just under three hours. It really was a rush, but the good disposition of the team helped a lot and the end result was very good after all.”

Mark was born as an artist. His impulse to make art began at age five when he started to draw. He regards math as an important component to art and that is why he began to have an affinity towards it. Both math and art require a great amount of focus and control. Growing up he had always received an enormous amount of encouragement from his family to pursue art, and to that he was very lucky. Art is his connection to people. Through the love of art Mark has the ability to bond and identify with others. Love is a very strong word and it holds a lot of weight when discussing art. “The shoots selected for Carnival Magazine Issue 01 are images I think best represent the style of what I’m known for. Bold colour, high contrast, fashion - and above all a bit expressive. One of the stories were involved around people at Carnivals being very fashionable. I photographed these images in San Francisco, CA where I attended Academy of Art University. I also just really love to work with colour. Colour has always been a huge part of my life. I believe that in contains a true psychology and language in the universe we live in. It can tell you a lot about someone unconsciously.”

“I’m mostly inspired by my memories. I think that’s what helps me grow. I’m a photographer because I feel it is the best way to express my soul and view of this world. I think as a photographer you have to expose yourself to your soul in order really define who you are and let your work tell that story. I love photography because it allows me to be “free” to put any idea into form and be visualized. My favourite photographers now are Craig McDean, Romina Ressia, Billy Kidd, Mert & Marcus and Steven Klein. My dream shoot would be to work with Cara Delevingne or Kate Moss.”

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I began photographing in 2009. I started with just a wild interesting in trying it. I was already a graphic artist at the time of trying it. So when I picked up the camera, it became a connection. I finally felt with destiny and what life had in store for me as an artist. At the moment I currently work part-time as a photographer doing freelance. I come from a background where Art was everything I ever knew to survive to where I am now. I started at five years old where my mom had enrolled me into talented art classes. There I got to paint, draw, share ideas, build things etc. From there I attended many Art competitions in state fairs in Louisiana. I won first prize a few times, and second place once. As I grew older things started to go more digital so I got into commercial art.â&#x20AC;?

“When I was younger, I truly loved drawing and painting. Even though this was only a hobby I had a passion for art, so I decided to explore it during my BA. I found myself looking at photography for inspiration and just fell in love with it. Looking at what other photographers did motivated me to want to learn how they did it. And so, this led me to do my Masters in Photography – within which my interests were concentrated in fashion. Currently, I’m a full-time photographer who is constantly looking for exciting projects to be a part of. “The ‘Ice’ story, was inspired by winter and the cold weather. It was done in a studio using garments made by designer Zara Oxborough. We had a vision for this project that we successfully followed through and achieved. You cannot look at this project without perceiving the frosty look we were going for. The winter designs inspired me to add cool colours such as the different shades of blue throughout the work, and for an even colder look, some are black and white.

Fashion director Ekta Rajani styles the local beauty in a mix of clothes from Indian wedding designers and labels such as Diesel, Kenneth Cole and Dior. Preeti stuns in traditional bridal looks like ghagas and more rebellious elements including jackets, pants and the colour black.” The shoot incorporates location in an extremely intimate manner, the model engaging with both the culture and locals of the featured Eastern environment.

Victoria Bolkina is a young Ukrainian fashion photographer. She’s one of the founders of “ViYaiSey” production group, one that offers a broad variety of photographic services. Victoria has worked with designers Olena Dats’, POSH, Kamenskayakononova and Jewelry retailer “Amaro”. She is a Harper’s Bazaar Fashion Forward 2012 Project finalist and winner of the “Imago” 2012 fashion illustration contest (from Ukrainian Fashion Week). Victoria is also the winner of Mercedes-Benz Kiev Fashion Days “STYLE.IT”, entitling her to join a shooting session with the leading stylist of Vogue Italia, Alessadro Buzzi. Bara Prasilova studied The Institute of Creative Photography at Silesian University. She lives and works in Prague. A key role in her work plays her memory, a mixture of real and fictional, as well as her sense of absurdity. Her visual world consists of imaginary memories, exploring what never happened and explorations of what could have happened if we dropped the habit of drawing our own limits. Her photographs have a slightly sombre characteristic and a magical atmosphere and humour. Her objects are mediators of the story, the role models. In 2009, she was selected as a Quiksilver ambassadors and awarded a Photographer of the Year title by the Academy of Design of the Czech Republic, Czech Grand Design. She went on to win this again in 2011.

Bara enjoys complicating her job with insisting on real props and objects, sometimes made by her, which could in other cases be easily replaced by Photoshop. She frequently distorts figures of her models. Specifically with their feet positioning she is referring to her childhood ballet era. With all that said, Bara enjoys a satisfying carrier of a fashion and portrait photographer with a recognizable style. No matter if she’s working for a client or doing her own projects, she is always following her signature style. Erasing the borderline between a commission photography and fine art, Bara is creating a category of her own. Bara has also been elected one of the Hasselblad Masters this year and is currently working on her project for Hasselblad Masters’ Book.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started to photograph when I was 18, just after I graduated from a business oriented high school. The single idea of myself becoming an office worker was so repelling to me that I decided to become a photographer instead - despite the lack of ANY previous experience. At my 24 years of age, studying creative photography at university, I chose fashion photography because I was tired of pretending to be an artist. Apart from that I am fascinated by conspiracy theories.â&#x20AC;?

“The ‘Czech Fashion Project’ series was created to primarily promote Czech fashion abroad. I personally call one of these photographs “pervert”, having taken it approximately two months before a psychopath kidnapped and killed a little girl in front of that very building. ‘Air Force’ is a series of fashion photographs for fashion designer Hana Zarubova. It takes place in my childhood neighbourhood. I like the feeling of insecurity about it. We don’t know if the models are about to fall or fly. That is exactly how I spent my childhood, balancing. “Work In Progress” is a fashion shoot for Hana Zarubova also. There is an intense feeling to them, maybe way too much for me, capturing my memories and emotions of the last summer. It has been photographed in the streets just around the corner from where I live now.”
