Green Tips Greener Pest Control Fall is a time when bugs and pests try to move indoors. Minimize your need for pesticides by removing sources of food, water and shelter: keep food in sealed containers, fix leaky faucets and seal off openings or cracks where pests could enter.

Take Part in Walk to School Day Celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 6 and team up with other students, teachers and parents to walk to school. The day aims to promote the environmental and health benefits of walking to school.

Switch to Low-VOC Paints If you’re planning on decorating this fall, consider switching to low-VOC paints. Low-VOC paints have less odor than regular paints and are less toxic, which can help with conditions such as asthma or allergies inside your home.

I wanted to help out with the Skate Park because I like being involved! I also really didn’t like the way the Skate Park was set up so I figured I could try to help out with that when I was asked. As time went on I wanted to get a competition going so I helped with that and I just wanted to get the Skate Park changed for the better and right now it’s really good. Overall, I helped because I just really like being involved! - Alec Cannata

Alec, a Sophomore at Bartlett High School, started skateboarding when he was twelve years old. Skateboarding is one of his true passions and he has regularly ttended the Lake Owen Skateboarding Camp in Cable, Wisconsin.

For the past three years, Alec has been the leader of our skate park focus group. Alec submitted reconfiguration drawings for the set-up of the Hampe park skate park and he helped choose the new pieces of equipment for the skate park. He has assisted with the annual Throw Down Show Down Skateboard Competition and this year he took 3rd place at the Advanced Level. Alec has been a true asset to the skate park focus group and our park district. We enjoy working with him and truly appreciate all of the effort he continues to put forth for us. WDSRA

The Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA), in cooperation with the Carol Stream Park District, offers a variety of fun and educational programs and services for individuals with special needs. With caring, dedicated and trained staff, WDSRA provides more than 1,500 programs, trips and special events year round to children and adults with disabilities. If you would like more information about WDSRA services and programs visit our website at wdsra.com or call (630) 681-0962.

Carol Stream Park District & the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. The park district will make reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable participation by an individual with a disability that meets essential eligibility requirements for that leisure program and facilities. If you have questions or believe you have been unfairly discriminated against by the park district, please call (630) 784-6100. Those who use the Telecommunications Device for the Deaf may reach the park district by calling (800) 526-0844.

Inclusion Services WDSRA also offers inclusion services for those wishing to participate in regular park district programs but may need assistance. Inclusion is designed to provide the least restrictive environment while providing the maximum opportunity to participate in a program. There is no charge for WDSRA’s support. If you would like assistance, please indicate that special accommodations are needed on the park district registration form. If you have questions, contact WDSRA at (630)-681-0962. Twoweek advance notice is requested for inclusion support.

Special Recreation The benefits of recreation extend far beyond the soccer field or the dance floor. The skills that are learned and practiced in leisure provide a tremendous foundation for life. For an individual with a disability, recreational activities can improve self-confidence, provide socialization opportunities, and reinforce a sense of teamwork and tolerance. They can establish friendships and gain social independence. The benefits are endless!

Volunteers/Part Time Staff We are looking for caring people with a desire to give a little. Volunteers are needed to assist in a variety of programs from sports to crafts to special events. Our programs are fun and exciting. Sign up by yourself or with a friend. Hours are flexible, training is provided, and the benefits are many. For an application visit our website at wdsra.com.
