Our 2018-2019 season features exciting story ballets, live music, colorful costumes, thrilling choreography and Carolina Ballet premieres. We hope you will embark on this spectacular journey with us this season!
NEW WORKS INSPIRATION
We open the season with an evening of Russian ballet featuring a world premiere by Zalman Raffael set to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. And in February, just in time for Valentine’s Day, Robert Weiss will present a new ballet based on a series of paintings by Czech artist, Alfonse Mucha - The Times of the Day
This season is influenced by a number of great artists, including artwork by Monet, Mucha, and local sculptor, Guy Solie along with the iconic music of Debussy, Holst, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. In addition, the season features the music of Raleigh's own J. Mark Scearce.

Our 2018-2019 Season opens with the classic Russian fairy tale, Firebird. This spellbinding ballet combines all the elements of a great storya handsome prince, a beautiful princess, and an evil sorcerer. Firebird is set to a powerful score by Igor Stravinsky. Tchaikovsky was an inspiration to Stravinsky and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto is considered one of his greatest. Zalman Raffael, will take on this monumental work to open the season. Aram Khatucturian’s Spartacus has become a staple of Russian ballet. Robert Weiss’ pas de deux evokes the Russian spirit of the music with bravura, lifts, turns and jumps.

Back by popular demand! In the spirit of all things spooky, Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Dracula returns to the stage after four years just in time for Halloween. This program also includes Robert Weiss’ scary evocation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. Featuring J. Mark Scearce’s (Macbeth) original scores for both ballets, played LIVE by an intimate chamber ensemble! Robert Weiss presents a new ballet based on paintings by Czech artist, Alfonse Mucha. Weiss came across the series of paintings while visiting an art gallery in Prague and was inspired to bring them to life through ballet. Working with a specially commissioned score by J. Mark Scearce, composed expressly for renowned pianist, William Wolfram, this is a ballet for lovers just in time for Valentine’s Day. The program will also feature Time Gallery, Weiss’ collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning New York based composer, Paul Moravec.

Join us for an evening of dance inspired by the famous paintings of Claude Monet featuring Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Picnic on the Grass and Robert Weiss’
The Gardens of Giverny. This beautiful homage to the great French painter features the evocative music of his compatriots Chausson, Debussy, and Poulenc. Originally commissioned in 2007 by the North Carolina Museum of Art this two-part ballet has everything a dance lover could wish for: a story ballet based on Monet’s life to open and a sweeping impressionistic second act based on his famous garden paintings.

We close out our 21st Season with one of the most popular story ballets of all time. Swan Lake is an enchanting fairy tale that tells the story of a beautiful swan princess cursed to live as a swan until she can find true love. Set to one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest scores, Robert Weiss’ version is truly spectacular! Music for this performance will be played live by The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle.
