Should ll you enro irt’ or ‘redsh g your risin r? rtne kinderga BY DR. KRISTEN WYNNS

A

cross North Carolina, many parents must make what seems like a life-changing decision for their rising kindergartners: Enroll or redshirt? The option to enroll a child who is not quite 5 years old — or who may have just turned 5 — often complicates parents’ decision-making process. The redshirt option allows parents to wait a year before enrolling their child in kindergarten.

2

EDUCATION GUIDE 2015-16

|

Too Much Too Soon? If your child turns 5 on or before Aug. 31, he will be able to bounce into a kindergarten class that year. If your child turns 5 on Sept. 1 or later, and you would like to enroll him in kindergarten, you must go through an intense application process that involves submitting work samples and letters of recommendation, as well as IQ and achievement testing, to determine if he is eligible for early entry. Some parents say the school system and others discouraged them from considering the early entry process. “Everyone I told that I was considering having my son, Connor, tested for early entry kindergarten did nothing but tell me that he would never pass the test because they never knew of anyone to pass that test,” says Melissa S., a mother of three in Apex who wishes to remain anonymous. “They continued, saying it’s a waste of money and that I shouldn’t push my child to test because he’s a boy and they

carolinaparent.com

are too immature.” Melissa proceeded with the early-entry testing and found it was the right path for her family to take. “I knew my son was more than ready emotionally, physically, socially and academically,” she says. “Connor is 8 years old now and going into the fourth grade. He is the youngest, but top in his class since kindergarten. This coming school year, he’s even enrolled in AIG classes. He is thriving!” Potential advantages of early enrollment include:  Providing a challenging and enriching curriculum for a child who is ready and excited about school. 

Sending a child to kindergarten with preschool peers and buddies. Less financial obligations, since parents no longer have to pay daycare or preschool tuition. (Keep in mind, however, there is a cost for earlyenrollment testing and some working parents

academically, socially and athletically.

may still need to pay for after-school care.) 

A child will be cared for during the day, which allows parents more time to work or focus on other siblings.

Potential disadvantages of early entry include:  If a child is emotionally, socially or behaviorally immature, you may be setting him up for academic and emotional struggles. 

If a child is not academically ready, she may experience a very frustrating year and develop a negative attitude toward school.

Too Late or Just Right? Redshirting is a concept taken from college sports, through which athletes practice with their team for the first year, but sit out during competitions to become stronger and more competitive for the next year. When it comes to kindergarten, redshirting involves holding a child back from starting kindergarten at age 5 to give that child an extra year to develop emotionally, academically and physically. Charlotte mom Michelle Vigor says redshirting her son was a very difficult and personal decision for her and her husband. “We both agreed that he followed directions well and was a good listener,” she says, but decided “to give time for more development of gross and fine motor skills, as well as emotional growth.” Vigor says she has no regrets because her son “had a fantastic year, and I would make the same decision again in a heartbeat.” Retired Wake County teacher Patti Neptun, who taught kindergarten for 15 of her 37 years as a teacher, says the parents she knows who redshirted their kindergartners never experienced regret over this decision. “I’ve had many parents who allowed their child to start as early as possible, and many ended up regretting it,” Neptun says. “But of all the parents who waited to let their kindergartener to start as an older 5- or 6-year-old, not one ever regretted that decision.” Potential advantages of redshirting include:  Giving a child an advantage to succeed

Giving a child who may be socially or emotionally immature a chance to “ripen” before encountering the demands of kindergarten.

Potential disadvantages of redshirting include:  Facing negative reactions from critics who believe redshirting sets up an imbalanced and unfair playing field for other kids who are age-appropriate for their grade. 

Missing the chance to make that leap to kindergarten with preschool or daycare peers.

TAKING A Transitional Approach Transitional kindergarten can bridge the gap between redshirting and repeating another year of preschool. Many parents and teachers view transitional kindergarten as how kindergarten was “back in the day.” Classrooms take a more developmental approach that emphasizes children’s social and emotional needs, versus taking a fast-paced academic approach. OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE:  Children learn how to wait their turn, share and

play with other children.  Most learning is done through hands-on activities.

Making the Call When the time comes to make the decision about whether to enroll or redshirt your child, try to be realistic about her social, emotional and academic skills. Focus more on academic and social readiness, versus chronological age or size. Signs of readiness include:  Knows ABCs or sight words, and can count from 1 to 10. 

 

Has demonstrated an ability to sit for periods of time in a structured setting and attend to a lesson. Can handle separation from mom and dad well. Is able to play well with peers and demonstrates respect for adult authority figures. Can handle transitions during the day from one activity to the next.

Still aren’t sure? Get a second opinion. Ask your child’s preschool teacher, pediatrician or coach about whether they think your child might be ready for kindergarten. Many child psychologists offer a brief “screening” to more thoroughly assess your child’s emotional, social, behavioral and academic skills. Consider what else your child will be doing if she does not start kindergarten. Will she repeat a preschool program with much younger children or enroll in a transitional kindergarten class? Assess your child’s learning “window.”

 Teachers strive to make learning fun to set a

positive tone and help develop a child’s love of school.  There is typically less retention of transitional

kindergarten students once they enter a standard kindergarten program.

NEGATIVES TO CONSIDER:  Transitional kindergarten adds a year of schooling

and can lead to boredom if a child is academically ready for the higher demands of a regular kindergarten classroom.  Although many parents and teachers believe

holding a student back will result in higher achievement scores, most research suggests those advantages typically disappear by third grade.

Is he excited about starting kindergarten and bored with preschool lessons? No matter when your child starts kindergarten, it’s a new beginning for him — and you. Project a positive and calm manner when discussing kindergarten with or around your child so that when you do send him off to kindergarten, your family will be able to cherish the memory of that special day. Public or Private? Weigh the Options for Special Education Students BY C.C. MALLOY

F

or parents of children who learn differently, school choice can be a very personal decision. Since there are varying degrees of disabilities, there are also varying degrees of special education. Not all schools, public or private, are equipped to accommodate all levels of disabilities. Some students might need fewer resources while others require intense interventions. How do you know what your child needs?

Public Programs Programs that serve at-risk behavioral, intellectual or physically disabled students are located in various public schools throughout the Triangle. Many of these schools offer selfcontained classrooms that focus on a diverse population with varying academic levels, but are not available in every public school and typically have few students with similar physical and intellectual challenges. Educators focus on life skills and fundamental academic abilities. “For regional programs, there are a variety of resources to meet the students’ needs,” says Sandy Chambers, principal of Brier Creek Elementary in Raleigh.

EDUCATION GUIDE 2015-16

|

carolinaparent.com

Students identified with an individual education plan gain access to these programs based on eligibility and program availability. Regarding placement, parents should speak with their child’s case manager. The inclusion model facilitates a variety of instructional techniques for special education students who are mainstreamed into a regular education classroom. These might include, but are not limited to, small group instruction, modified assignments, structured objectives, assistive technology and a designated resource teacher. From a socialization standpoint, students are also able to participate with their grade-level peers during electives and events such as field trips and assemblies. “Public schools do a great job of serving all students with special needs,” Chambers says. She recommends parents check out the programs to be sure they are a good fit for a particular type of student or learning disability.

Private Programs First, parents should know there are many private schools — each with their own mission and philosophy. Equally important, parents should understand that private schools are not required to teach the same lessons as public schools. “Each nonpublic school determines their own curriculum,” says Chris Mears, public information officer at the North Carolina Department of Administration. If a parent is interested in a private school, they can check the grade-level curriculum and standardized testing requirements at that particular facility. Because the classrooms typically have fewer students, private school teachers can focus on individual student needs and incorporate a variety of teaching methods to reach all children. “The lessons are a good fit for academic ability, as well as social and emotional levels,” says Tiffany Gregory, dean of admissions at The Fletcher Academy. “They are tailored to the child and are student-centered.” The Hill Center in Durham offers the best of both worlds. Mornings are dedicated to the students’ academic challenges. In the afternoon, students transfer back to their regular school (public or private) for additional afternoon instruction. The school also provides access to assistive technology. “We serve as an intervention arm and the organization of the class is built to address the learning differences,” says Bryan Brander, head of the school. Since the classes have just a few students, the goals and accommodations are personalized to each student’s specific needs. “Private schools have some of the same accommodations

as public schools,” says Augusta C. of Raleigh, who has had children in both public and private schools. “But they might be administered differently because of the smaller classroom size.” Fewer students in a class enables teachers to address challenges throughout the school day. “We educate our students using one-on-one and small group direct instruction teaching, as well as addressing skill acquisition in the natural teaching environment,” says Jill Lerner, director of Learn with the Best School in Cary.

Feasibility While private schools do offer much lower student-to-teacher ratios, there is a price to pay for that benefit. Tuition and transportation may be a concern for many families. Some schools charge upwards of $20,000 per student per year, although many do offer payment plans, financial aid, disability grant funding and scholarships. Working parents concerned about transportation should check with the school before determining this to be a limiting factor. Private schools may or may not have multidisciplinary teams available, but many understand the need for interventions and incorporate these disciplines into the regular school day. For students who qualify, public schools provide related services and therapies for exceptional children to maximize growth during the learning process. Parents of exceptional students should consider visiting both public and private schools in their area to learn about the resources available to them. The Fletcher Academy invites parents to observe classes in session to get an understanding of classroom expectations. Learn with the Best School offers a “trial” day for students who might be interested in attending. Parents can also meet with administrators first to see if the school is the right fit. After all, parents know their child better than anyone and should trust their instincts, since the goal should be to find the school that best meets their student’s educational needs. “Having a kid with a learning disability is really scary,” Augusta C. says. “Concentrate on the school that can help your child Visit these websites for more now.”

TO

Achieve

Changes to mandated program result in progress BY ANNE WOOTEN GREEN

After a rough first year, the North Carolina-mandated Read to Achieve program is showing progress by increasing the number of third-graders reading at grade level. Implementation, however, still has its problems, including full funding for the program and key program details that remain in flux.

What is Read to Achieve? The Read to Achieve law, enacted in July 2012 as part of the Excellent Public Schools Act, was designed to ensure that North Carolina students are reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. The law took effect for the 2013-14 school year. In the original legislation, if a student failed to achieve the set benchmark, that student was held back from advancing to fourth grade. Now, however, no third-grade student is retained based solely on Read to Achieve results, and there are many ways a thirdgrader can demonstrate reading proficiency, according to the law, including: • Score proficient on the Beginning of Grade test, which is taken at the start of third grade. • Score proficient on the End of Grade test, taken at the end of third grade. • Successfully complete a portfolio of reading assessments. • Retake the EOG test once, if he or she fails it the first time. • Successfully pass an authorized alternative test.

Challenges and Costs Whitney Oakley, executive director of Guilford County School’s K-5 curriculum, believes helping kids to be better readers is a good thing, but she is critical of Read to Achieve’s implementation and timing. Oakley believes third grade is too late to start a reading intervention. “Research shows that we should be intervening long before third grade, and retention doesn’t help anybody,” she says. “We should step in between kindergarten and first grade. We know that an early foundation in reading prepares students better for the rest of their education.” Chuck Nusinov, executive director for learning and teaching in CharlotteMecklenburg Schools, says he thinks the intent of the law “was spot-on,” but that there is a “disconnect” between Read to

Achieve’s intent and implementation. Oakley agrees. It is akin to an “unfunded mandate,” she says. “The size of the challenge is larger than the legislation. It is a state initiative that has presented some challenges with funding and with what we know research says about helping kids become better readers, and all of that has not been worked out in the best interests of kids.”

How the Law Helps Students A major part of the law included creation of summer reading camps to provide additional instruction in third-grade reading. In the summer of 2014, last-minute changes to the first camp caused confusion, when mandatory attendance was changed to voluntary, and a six-week program was cut to a minimum of three weeks. “The law allowed a system to offer a minimum of three weeks up to six weeks,” Nusinov says. CMS kept the six-week option for its reading camps. “We wanted to offer the most sustained program to allow students to engage in learning.” To make the camp student-friendly, CMS camps include field trips and incorporate music, dance, physical education and science. “We didn’t want students to feel like they were being punished,” Nusinov says. “It was all built around reading.” Oakley says in summer 2014, the Guilford County school system was able to serve both rising third- and fourth-grade students because of a personal donation. But because of budget constraints, only rising fourth-graders were served in summer 2015. Like other school districts in the state, Wake County also struggles with the changes to and cost of the program. The county is unique because it offers both traditional and year-round student calendars. Sherri Miller, director of the K-12 literacy academics department in WCPSS, says traditional calendar students who don’t pass the reading EOG are invited to attend a three-week reading camp during summer break. Year-round calendar students, however, are evaluated throughout the year.

“For our students on the year-round calendar, we had to start the reading camps before they had even taken the End of Grade test,” she says. “So we had a camp as early as March.”

Next-Step Support If students remain below grade level after the camps, and cannot advance through a different assessment or an exemption, they are either retained or put in a “threequarters” transitional classroom, where they receive enhanced instruction in reading while remaining at a fourth-grade level in other subjects. If the students can pass an assessment in late October or early November, the reading retention label is removed from their file. After attending a summer camp and being retested, CMS students who need more help can go into a transitional fourthgrade class, Nusinov says. “We follow an intensified reading model. We pull those children out of the transitional class for additional reading help. We can do this for an entire school year.” In Wake County, the reading classes in 2014 showed that more than 60 percent of students made gains, Miller says. Most of the students were placed in transitional classes, but students were not pulled out of those classes for reading. “Each student has 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction by a fourth-grade teacher,” she says. “The program has the public much more aware of reading performance at the third-grade level,” Oakley says. “Third grade now feels more like a gateway grade.” Despite the challenges of Read to Achieve, Nusinov sees the bright spots. “We had a girl who came into the reading camp who was reading at only a kindergarten level,” he says. “When she was tested at the end of the camp, she was reading at a second-grade, eight-month level. That makes it all worthwhile.” Anne Wooten Green is a freelance writer and editor based in Winston-Salem.

Virtual Charter Schools T WO NEW OPTIONS FOR NC STUDENTS BY LYNDA VAN KUREN

Going to school full-time without leaving home may seem like a fantasy, but it’s a fantasy that has come true for students attending two virtual charter schools available to North Carolina students: North Carolina Virtual Academy and North Carolina Connections Academy. Virtual charter schools allow students in kindergarten through high school to attend an accredited online school that follows the state curriculum. “A virtual charter school is a real school, but it uses a different method of delivery,” says Joel Medley, principal of North Carolina Virtual Academy. “The kids take statewide assessments, they take quizzes and tests, they have curriculum to work through. It’s a real school, and that needs to be understood.” North Carolina Virtual Academy was established in 2000 and has schools in 32 states and Washington, D.C. North Carolina Connections Academy was established in 2001 and has schools in 26 states. The schools are expected to reach a total enrollment of 5,000 within the next four years, according to Deanna Townsend-Smith, lead educational consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. These virtual charter schools are here thanks to parent requests and lobbying efforts targeting the North Carolina General Assembly and State Board of Education. Approximately 17,000 people expressed interest in having this option for students, says Dee Stewart, executive director of the North Carolina chapter of PublicSchoolOptions.org. Interested parents also conducted a media campaign to garner support. The General Assembly heeded their call and enacted legislation last year to create a four-year pilot for virtual charter schools in the state. When the State Board

of Education sought applications, North Carolina Virtual Academy and North Carolina Connections Academy applied and were approved.

Going to Cyber School Full-Time Virtual charter schools work for a variety of students, such as those who are self-motivated, exhibit severe behavior challenges, have been bullied or learn at an uneven pace. Students who need flexibility due to illness, travel-sports teams or other activities also benefit from virtual charter schools. A child attending a virtual charter school must work with a learning coach, usually the parent, who assumes responsibility for the child’s education, monitors attendance, maintains a schedule, oversees the student’s work and consults with the teacher(s). Students who attend a virtual charter school spend 28-29 hours a week doing schoolwork — about the same as students in brick-and-mortar schools. They have regularly scheduled live lessons with teachers and classmates, and complete remaining work any time during the week. This flexibility allows Jennifer Ratcliff’s 6-year-old daughter Sarah* to take frequent breaks, which help her concentrate and prevent fatigue. Sarah’s day starts with a live lesson, after which she plays for an hour. Then Sarah starts on her assignments. However, instead of working five hours straight, Sarah does her schoolwork in pieces, stopping to walk the dog or engage in other energy-burning activities. “If Sarah has ants in her pants, she can do a math problem, go run around the house and then do another math problem,” Ratcliff says. The Ratcliffs, who recently moved to Winston-Salem, just started their second year with North Carolina Connections Academy.

carolinaparent.com

Sarah has also participated in a reading enrichment class, one of many options for students who are ahead of their classmates. Likewise, students who struggle may receive additional live lessons or other assistance to get them on track. “We watch data live to see whether students are progressing or not,” says Nathan Currie, principal of North Carolina Connections Academy. “If a student is having difficulty, we put interventions in place.” Despite working in cyber world, teachers — all of whom are North Carolina-certified — maintain strong relationships with students. In addition to live lessons, Ratcliff says Sarah’s previous teacher was available online and by phone for one-on-one instruction. Teachers call students and parents regularly to check on how things are going. Though parents are responsible for socialization, the schools provide occasional opportunities for outside activities such as field trips and student get-togethers. To learn more about North Carolina Virtual Academy and North Carolina Connections Academy, visit ncva.k12.com and connectionsacademy.com. Lynda Van Kuren is a freelance writer based in Wilmington. She has written extensively on education issues. *This name has been changed to protect the child’s identity.

GETTING STARTED If you’re interested in a virtual charter school for your child, contact the school and talk with a counselor. If you decide it’s a good fit, you’ll need to supply the school with the required documentation: the child’s vaccination records, proof of residency, birth certificate and academic records. If necessary, the school will assess your child to determine the appropriate grade for him or her. Then the school will develop an Individualized Learning Plan for your child and send your child’s textbooks to him or her. If your child is eligible for free or reduced lunch, the school will provide a computer and assistance with Internet connection expenses.

Cursive Handwriting Should it stay or go? BY DEVYANI BORADE

“D

id you get the pasta?” I ask my husband as soon as he arrives home after work. “What pasta?” he responds, dumping the grocery bag on the floor. I roll my eyes and whip out the shopping list I’d written for him. “Pasta. Look. It says right here. P-A-S-T-A. You didn’t get it then?” “That’s supposed to be pasta?” he responds incredulously, rereading my cursive handwriting. “I thought it was paste. I got that new brand of toothpaste, two for the price of one!” So we’re going to have leftovers for dinner tonight, but very clean teeth. Can I really blame him? I remember filling out reams of pages practicing my cursive writing in school. Thirty years later, the only thing I handwrite is my weekly shopping list. So what was the point of all those hours I spent with my wrist turned just right and my fingers placed just so? Is it worth teaching our children to do the same?

Waning Popularity

The Ayes

Today everything is typed — from reminders and thank-you notes

Sponsors of the Back to Basics bill say connecting letters improves brain development and motor skills. Other supporters contend that cursive writing is more aesthetically pleasing, can be written faster and reflects a mark of sophistication. “Handwriting is an ancient and beautiful art that has the advantage of also being supremely useful,” argues Kitty Burns Florey, author of “Script and Scribble: The Rise and Fall of Handwriting.” Aside from the purely practical need for a legible script when an electronic device is not handy or runs out of juice, or you need to write something personal, writing on a piece of paper with a pen or pencil serves another function: It slows down our brains, gives us a little peace and allows us to engage with the moment and really think. Children are purported to remember shapes of whole words better in cursive than printed form. They are less likely to write backwards or to confuse letters like “b” and “d,” and cursive encourages neatness. It also comes in handy when signing a

to class assignments and office reports. Written communication has become pixelated. It appears and disappears at the press of a button, repeats effortlessly without limit and eases online searches for elusive phrases. Quick, clear and clean. Because handwriting is a dying art form (thanks to digital advancement), cursive writing has been dropped from many public school systems’ curricula across the country. Implementation of the Common Core State Standards in North Carolina public schools in 2012-13 initially excluded cursive writing from the state’s curriculum. But less than a year later, in June 2013, Gov. Pat McCrory signed the Back to Basics bill into law, which states: “The standard course of study shall include the requirement that the public schools provide instruction in cursive writing, so students create readable documents through legible cursive handwriting by the end of fifth grade.”

check, a grown-up responsibility all children will someday face. I am certainly not alone in seeing the value of cursive writing. There seems to be a movement growing that encourages slow and quiet activities as an antidote to the frenzy of many people’s busy lives.

The Nays Remember that left-handed child in kindergarten who was torturously taught to write with his “correct” hand? Have you been a victim of a medical prescription written in a spidery crawl so unintelligible it led to undesirable consequences? In an electronic world, why teach children to write cursive letters when they may never need to scribble anything more than their signatures in the future? Isn’t it more important we prepare them for gaining proficiency in skills that will be in demand tomorrow? Like typing?

The Compromise Then again, why not gain fluency in both? “I’ve been publishing books since 1979 and have written all but my first three on the computer,” Florey writes. “However, I take extensive notes by hand and often work out problems on paper: the classic clichéd and rather romantic retro idea of ‘curling up with a notebook, the cat and a cup of tea’ works very well for me!” Devyani Borade writes about the humor and pathos of everyday life. School 10 ways education has changed since our day BY LARA KRUPICKA

T

hese days we marvel at the technological

innovations being used in the classroom. With so many new devices available, our kids’ experience of school is beginning to look quite own. But beyond

technology, there are other differences. Here are 10 ways experience may be different from your child’s.

1. Overhead projectors and filmstrips. Remember those? Most of us jumped at the chance to be the student chosen to manually move the strip forward at the sound of the tone. We all wished we could be the one writing with squeaky markers on the overhead sheets. Plus, who among us didn’t try at least once to sneak in a quick nap when the classroom darkened? Now computers have taken the place of these audiovisual devices. PowerPoint presentations, digital projectors and videos do the job in our kids’ classrooms. 2. Peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches. With the prevalence of nut allergies and severity of risks, many schools now ban any peanut or tree nut products within their walls. This means no more peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches in school lunches, although alternatives, such as sunflowerseed spread, are beginning to fill the gap.

School

your school

Then and Now

3. Chalkboards. Some classrooms still have one, but most are no longer used for writing. Instead, dry erase boards and computerized SMART boards (interactive white boards) take that role. No more staying after school to help clap erasers. 4. Playing tag during recess. You read that right. Some schools have placed restrictions on any contact games during

the school day, except in gym, due to the risk of injury. 5. Open front doors. Gone are the days when you could walk right into an elementary school. Because of the potential for violence, many schools have installed security systems that require visitors to be buzzed into the building. Along with these measures have come “lock-down drills,” during which students and teachers practice what to do in the event of a school security breach. 6. Mimeographed papers. Remember that smell? The days of duplicating via mimeograph machine are a thing of the past. Now teachers use photocopiers and printers for making multiple copies of papers for students. 7. Birthday treats. No more bringing in smiley-face cookies to celebrate a student’s special day. In an effort to do their part in the battle against childhood obesity, schools have begun forbidding treats, with the exception of requesting foods and/or drinks for sanctioned school celebrations. This means no more homemade cupcakes. Also, some schools no longer allow teachers to use sweets and food as a behavior incentive. 8. Typewriters. Since middle and high school students no longer use typewriters, they’re being taught “keyboarding” (formerly known as “typing”)

at younger and younger ages. Now that there are computer labs in the majority of schools, teachers typically set time aside each week for students to practice their keyboarding skills and learn how to use common computer programs. 9. Fluoride rinse. Some states still conduct regular fluoride rinse programs in schools. Others have ceased these programs. These days, many municipalities already add fluoride to their water supply, so there is less of a need for fluoride rinse programs. 10. Lunch money. Thanks to the advent of scanners, many schools are phasing in the use of swipe cards to pay for school lunches. Parents send a check or go online to load the cards, then students use the cards to buy lunch. This is one change that any parent who ever had their lunch money stolen by the school bully can appreciate. It also means no more stolen or lost coins on the way to school. No matter how much changes about the education system, one thing remains constant: a child’s need for support and encouragement. Parents thankfully have been and will continue to be there to provide that. Lara Krupicka, a freelance writer, is surprised at how much has changed since her eldest started elementary school 11 years ago. She has three girls — ages 16, 14 and 11.

Home Schooling 5 REASONS TO TAKE THE PLUNGE BY URSULA VOGT

6 7, 8 0 4

That’s the number North Carolina parents are buzzing about this fall. According to the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education, there were an estimated 67,804 of homeschool students in North Carolina in 2014-15. Nationally, that number is 2.2 million. Why does home-school draw so many traditional school families? We asked parents across North Carolina, including married couples, single parents, blended families, stay-at-home parents and working parents: “What made you take the plunge?” Customized Learning Gina Grothoff of Charlotte has a background in education. One of her top reasons for home schooling her two children was to enable them to learn “in their own timeline and their own style of learning. … You can change your methods along the way and modify as you go along to what works best for you and your family,” she says. “It also doesn’t have to look the same for every child, because each child has his own strengths, weaknesses and learning style.” For example, the parent of a child with dyslexia could modify his lesson by using manipulatives to teach math, rather than a workbook. “There are so many choices out there that it is mind boggling!” says Veronica Wright of Lexington, North Carolina. Wright, who also has a background in education, says she chose home-school because the traditional education setting required hours of homework

every night, which cut into family time. “Home schooling really is a journey and it has touched every aspect of my life in one way or another,” she says. “It has brought new friendships to our lives, leadership roles, job opportunities and lifetime family memories that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Flexibility Home-schoolers don’t have to follow a weekly, day-to-day bell schedule but, according to the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education, they must still operate school “on a regular schedule, excluding reasonable holidays and vacations, during at least nine calendar months of the year.” The division also recommends that home-schools maintain at least five clock hours of instruction each school day. Many families take it a step further and home-school their children year-around, choosing vacation destinations that

double as learning experiences and extended field trips. In addition to enabling a flexible schedule, home schooling also removes limits on where classes can be held.

Values Brian D. Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute, has been studying the home-school movement for the past 30 years. He observes that by adulthood, home-school students are likely to internalize their parents’ values and beliefs at a high rate. Charlotte residents Richard and Gail Hawkins, who immigrated to the U.S. from Africa, want to pass their values and heritage to their children. They echo one of the primary reasons parents all over the country opt to home-school. “Choosing to educate our own children has helped us to define what really matters to us in all areas — faith, academics, career, relationships and more,” the couple wrote together in an email statement.

Real-life Experiences Families who choose to homeschool their children say it isn’t just an educational choice, it’s a lifestyle choice that includes the

entire family working together and sharing experiences, like volunteering or taking classes together. It’s also not a coincidence that many families who choose to take the plunge start their own businesses and have their kids work alongside them, like the Hawkins, who own nJoyScience, a home-school program offering science curricula for ages 6 and older.

Quality Time “The main reason I chose to home-school is because I missed my boys,” Wright says. “For me, there was so much I wanted to share with and teach my kids, but there just wasn’t enough time.” The unifying thread in all of the reasons these parents took the plunge is that they don’t want to miss out. At the end of a long day with hours of homework ahead, these parents are asking for more. More time, more connection and more experiences with their children. Ursula Vogt is a freelance writer who began home schooling in 2001. She and her husband, Mark, have four kids. They chose home-school when their son was diagnosed with autism.

The New

SAT Test

A breakdown of the changes, and how parents view them

A

May 2015 Kaplan Test Prep survey found that 85 percent of parents of college-bound students are still unaware that the SAT is changing, even two years since the change was announced and just a few months before the new SAT launches in March 2016.* When provided more details about the proposed changes to the SAT, the surveyed parents’ opinions about the new format were divided.

• 30 percent say they viewed the changes as something negative or think the exam will be harder.

• 30 percent view the changes as something positive.

However, views on specific changes reveal that a majority of parents believe the new SAT will be harder.

MATH The current SAT math section focuses on computational skills and allows students to use a calculator during all sections. The new SAT will focus on advanced algebra, data analysis and real-world problem solving. Calculators will only be permitted for one of two math sections. Fifty-six percent of parents say these changes will make the math portion of the new SAT harder, 18 percent say it will become easier and 26 percent say it will make no difference.

• 20 percent are indifferent.

READING

• 15 percent still don’t know

The current SAT reading section includes three 20-25

enough to form an opinion.

minute units of sentence completions, and longand short-passage reading questions. The new SAT reading section will last 65 minutes and be made up of long passages followed by reading comprehension questions. It will also test understanding of passages from U.S. and world literature, history/social science and science. Fifty-three percent of parents say the redesigned SAT reading section will be harder than the current one, 12 percent say it will become easier and 36 percent say it will make no difference.

WRITING AND LANGUAGE/ GRAMMAR The current SAT tests grammar in the form of individual sentence correction. The new SAT will test grammar in the form of passages and will also include questions about structure and reading comprehension. Fifty-three percent of parents say the writing and language/ grammar portion of the new SAT will become harder, 13 percent say it will become easier and 34 percent say it will make no difference.

ESSAY The current SAT essay is required and asks students to develop a persuasive essay about an issue. Facts and grammar have little bearing on the overall score. The new SAT essay is optional and asks students to read a 650-750 word passage, then prepare

a facts-based essay analyzing how the author builds his or her argument. Sixty percent of parents say the SAT essay will become harder, 15 percent say the essay will become easier and 25 percent say it will make no difference.

NO WRONG ANSWER PENALTY The current SAT includes a ¼-point penalty for wrong answers. The new SAT eliminates the wrong answer point penalty. Fifty-six percent of parents say this change will make the new SAT easier; 22 percent say the change will make it harder and 23 percent say it will make no difference. “It’s not surprising that most parents are still unaware of the upcoming SAT changes, as most are understandably focused on other aspects of the college admissions process like tuition, but the time to get all the facts about the test changes is now, as test day is quickly approaching,” says Lee Weiss, vice president of Kaplan Test Prep. “Our survey found that the more parents learn about the new SAT, the more they understand how challenging the content will be for their kids. There is no doubt that the new SAT is more rigorous than the current one.” Fore more information about the upcoming SAT changes, visit satchange.com. For a series of short videos about the new SAT, visit youtube.com/kaplansatact.
