CAROLINA LEGACY
Known By Our Fruit... MATTHEW 7:16-18
Living in these extraordinary times during the year of celebration has been quite challenging to say the least. Our world, our nation, has seen so much sadness, anxiety, and confusion amid a pandemic and certainly social unrest. I have been thinking about our 13 founders who sacrificed to establish this Branch of Zion and wondered what they would say to us in these troubled days that we find ourselves celebrating 80 years of being in existence. As I pondered this question, I was reminded of a story. There once was a farmer who hired a worker to dig a well on his farm. They agreed that the cost of the well would be determined by its depth. Nine feet down, he hit water. The well-digger told the farmer that the well would last for a good many years. The farmer then asked, “Will this well be deep enough to make it through the difficult dry seasons?” The well-digger replied, “No, this is just for normal rain. When the dry seasons come, it won’t be deep enough to bring you water. Keep on digging,” the farmer said. “I don’t care how much it cost; it needs to be deeper.” So, he kept digging until at thirty feet, he hit a well-spring. “Good” the farmer said. “You’ve gone farther in and deeper down. I’ll pay the price for a well that can handle dry seasons.” I believe the founders wanted to make sure that we had a well deep enough that could handle dry seasons like the year we are currently facing, and they were willing to pay the price. They admonished us through legacy, not to stay on the surface, or else we will be shallow our whole lives, and when the winds of adversity blow, we’ll be swept away. But if we kept digging like they demonstrated for us – digging into the Word of God – digging into our prayer lives – digging into blessing and impacting others – when the dry seasons come, we’ll have a wellspring of life and joy coming from a very deep well. “…we drink from wells we did not dig and vineyards and olive groves we did not plant…” Deuteronomy 6:11 (NIV) I pray that God, our ancestors and the founders are pleased and amazed at the quality of Fruit we’ve been able to produce given what they placed in our hands to work with and the times in which we have been called to minister in. Given the climate we’ve had to endure, the rain that has fallen in our lives collectively and individually, and the soil of our hearts receiving the word of God it is no surprise that our Faith has grown and we’ve become known by the fruit we bear. Whenever God did spectacular things, He always required the people He was working through to do something first. He told Moses to hold out his rod. He told Joshua to have the priest to step into the water. Jesus told those at the tomb of Lazarus to move the stone. He told the Disciples to bring what they had to feed the 5,000. Throughout scripture, God would tell a person or a group of people, to do something that would then activate the power of His Word. We celebrate you, the members and organizers of this Branch of Zion, for living by actions that demonstrated your Faith in God. There is a Latin term used to help us put our celebration in perspective. “Soli Deo Gloria” which means, “Glory to God Alone.” We give God all the Glory for His Hand of Favor for these past 80 years.

GROWING, TRANSFORMING, IMPACTING LIVES
Dear CMBC Partner/Supporter/Friend: In April of 1940, 13 South Carolinians came to Washington, DC and formed the Carolina Missionary Baptist Church. 80 years later, we have even more reason to give God praise. This year, as we celebrate 80 years, we are thankful for God’s protection, provision, and promotion. Since its inception, Carolina Missionary Baptist Church has sought to be a shining example of a people who are determined to follow God’s lead no matter what. During the past 80 years, CMBC has watched God move the ministry from worshipping in a home to its well-known location on Morton Street in Washington, DC to several schools in Prince George’s County, Maryland and finally to our current 18.34-acre campus. Our focus has been maturing people, building ministries, and ultimately building more facilities to serve our communities. Carolina has partnered with several other ministries over the years to collaboratively do the mission work of Jesus Christ. We are currently serving and sowing into the lives of young people through our partnership with schools. We are impacting the lives of those less fortunate through partnerships focused on homelessness, drug addiction and serving those who are incarcerated. We are a body of believers who are intent on making disciples, maturing believers and mastering our lives to live to our fullest potential in Christ. We value the many relationships we have developed over our 80 years of existence and would love to include as many of our ministry friends and partners as possible. Please share this experience with us. We are grateful for all that God has done these past 80 years and excited about what He is going to do. In Service to the King,
Pastor Sherman & Precious Nelson

GROWING, TRANSFORMING, IMPACTING LIVES
CMBC HISTORY
GROWING,TRANSFORMING, IMPACTING LIVES On April 26, 1940, thirteen Christians migrated from South Carolina. They believed in Jesus Christ and being spiritually inclined, established the Carolina Missionary Baptist Church, believing that, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.” In January 1952, while under the leadership of Reverend Sligh, the church moved to 777 Morton Street, NW. During a remodeling effort in 1966, Carolina Church worshipped at the Odd Fellows Hall until completion of the renovations in November 1966. Reverend Sligh continued to serve as pastor until 1969. Reverend Love James was installed as pastor in May 1970. He provided loyal leadership in creating avenues by which the church burned the mortgage utilizing the Women’s Ministry as the vehicle that brought this goal to reality. The Mortgage Burning Service was held on December 5, 1976. Reverend James faithfully until February 1977. In 1979 a Building Fund and Expansion Fundraising Committee was organized. Later that year, the church was able to purchase eight lots that were adjacent to the church for $127,000. By 1980, the church had grown immensely. This growth created the need for a full-time pastor and Reverend Gilbert was brought on full-time. Carolina Church continued to make great strides in their struggle, “Believing that all things are possible…” and made the final payments on the eight parcels of land in September 1981. Reverend Gilbert concluded his pastorate in October 1985. At a critical juncture in the life of the church, the official board began to focus on finding a new pastor. After hearing preachers from far and near, the church voted in March 1987 to accept Anthony E. Moore as pastor. The Carolina Missionary Baptist Church has consistently committed itself to the holistic GOSPEL and has been steadfast in missions ~ home and abroad. Pastor Moore has propelled us further into the worship and praise experience. Carolina Church has become a temple of praise and thanksgiving, with God-like spirits, whose people are and have been resolved to meet the challenges of its surrounding community. Pastor Moore developed the Sanctuary Without Walls and has led the church in the acquisition of 18.34 acres of land in Prince Georges County, Maryland in 1995. The mortgage on the land was paid in 1999. In 2004, the church began building on the site. On May 20, 2006, the church moved into its newly completed family life center at 9901 Allentown Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744. GROWING, TRANSFORMING, IMPACTING LIVES
