What is the annual meeting? It’s your chance to participate in the business of your co-op . . . (remember, this is a member-owned business!) We value your participation and input as we go about the business of bringing you safe, reliable electricity at the lowest possible cost. Please join us at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College in Supply for a morning filled with fellowship, food and so much more. In addition to the official business meeting, you can meet your co-op directors and the employees that work to keep your lights on. Plus lots of activities and opportunities to meet your fellow members. Some people describe it as a big family reunion!

Energy Efficiency is still the simplest way to manage your electricity budget . . . and BEMC has tools to help you! At BEMC, our focus every day is on doing all we can to keep your electric power safe, reliable and affordable. We use technology, smart purchasing practices and well-trained employees to make that happen. But there’s a lot that you can do to manage your electric bill and we have many tools to help you. First, our Customer Service Representatives are available for your questions and can help you analyze your bill. With the information provided by our Automated Meter Information (AMI) system, we can provide you with daily and even hourly consumption information.
Page 22
Brunswick-0613.indd 2
This will show your usage patterns and perhaps identify some places where you might cut back. We can also correlate this to the weather conditions at the time. If this detailed usage information doesn’t resolve your questions, a BEMC walk-through energy audit may be an appropriate next step. PowerStat, our prepaid electricity program is another powerful tool
for taking control of your energy budget. The ability to purchase power as your budget allows can be a great convenience. PowerStat users can access eight Bill Payment Terminals around our service area, some available 24/7, as well as purchase by telephone with a credit card during business hours. The In-Home Display (IHD) provides updates on your usage and remaining balance at your fingertips. We also offer information resources like Carolina Country
magazine, our websites, bemc.org and TogetherWeSave.com and information is available in all offices on energy efficiency practices. When you’re ready to do an energy efficiency upgrade at your home, our Weatherization Loan Program is ready to help. BEMC members who own their homes and have a good credit history with the co-op can borrow up to $6,000 (businesses up to $10,000) for a variety of projects. The most popular use is for a new energy efficient heat pump. With summer weather here, it may be time to consider an upgrade! I invite you to contact us about any of these tools. We are here to serve you.

Is your heat pump ready for hot summer weather? Celebrating Local High School Seniors Congratulations to all of the graduates at our local high schools! BEMC is pleased to announce the winners of our $5,000 College Scholarships for 2013. For this year’s essays, applicants interviewed someone who experienced the advent of electricity coming to our area. The student essays showed a new awareness of what electricity meant to our forefathers and an appreciation for what it means today. Lindsey Galloway from West Brunswick High plans to attend UNCW to study Elementary Education and International Studies. She is the daughter of Cindy & Gary Galloway of Supply.

Lindsey Galloway
Lindsey interviewed a neighbor from Varnamtown and noted in her essay that “Mr. Ennis admitted that it was very hard to see by the small kerosene lamp because it emitted miniscule amounts of light, and often times it would be so dark that he would go to bed and wake up early in order to finish his homework by the sunlight.”
If it’s tuned up and still not working efficiently, it may be time to replace it with a high efficiency unit. To finance the purchase, you may qualify for a low-interest Weatherization Loan from BEMC. We provide loans up to $6,000 to replace an old heat pump or for other energy efficiency projects – doors and windows, duct repair/replacement, insulation, mobile home roofovers and more. The payment is simply added to your monthly electric bill, amortized over 5 years. The savings on your energy bill is often enough to cover the payment! Visit bemc.org, Member Services tab or call us at 800-842-5871 for details.
Kayla Buck attends South Columbus High School and will study Biology at Campbell University in the fall. She is the daughter of Beverly & John Buck of Nakina.
Kayla Buck
Interviewing her granddaddy, Kayla learned a lot about the early days of electricity. One observation by her granddaddy: “I bought our first television when I was a teenager. It was an old, used, black and white unit, but back then owning a television was a big deal.”
Middle School Students Heading to Touchstone Energy Basketball Camps this Summer
D’kwanshe & LaChella Stanley
D’kwanshe Stanley of Shallotte Middle School will experience his dream of attending the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at UNC-Chapel Hill this June. Encouraged by parents Joseph and LaChella Stanley, (a BEMC customer service representative), D’kwanshe showed his persistence by applying for the second time. Clara Tyson of Leland Middle School is the winner of the girl’s scholarship to the Touchstone Energy Basketball Camp at NC State. The camps give the young players exposure to college life, high-level coaching and the opportunity to learn both basketball and life skills.
