SAFE PASSAGE // FALL 2018 // INSTRUCTORS: AMIT UPADHYE, CATHERINE SPELLMAN AND CLAUDIO VEKSTEIN // DESIGN EXCELLENCE NOMINATION TEAM MEMBERS: AISHWARYA UBHE AND MITCHELL MAXFIELD THE EDUCATION CAMPUS SITS QUIETLY IN THE HEART OF SOUTH PHOENIX, MARKED BY THE DIVERSITY WITHIN THE COMMUNITY. THE CAMPUS TRIES TO INTRODUCE AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT BY OFFERING RESOURCES THAT WILL EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS IN THEIR EDUCATION, REGARDLESS OF AGE, GENDER, RACE, ETC. THE FORMS OF THE BUILDINGS ARE REMINISCENT OF THE INNER STRUGGLES THAT EACH OF US FACES ON A DAILY BASIS. THE WALLS BOTH SURROUND AND ENCLOSE THE USER, LEADING THEM TO SEEK AN ESCAPE. THE CANOPY IN TURN FILTERS LIGHT TO ENCOURAGE THE USER TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD TO GRANDER SPACES. THE USE OF LIGHT IS THEN THE PRIMARY TOOL BY WHICH THIS PROJECT DRAWS PEOPLE IN, ACTIVATING THIS SITE, THE CANAL, AND THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. THUS CREATING A SAFE PASSAGE AWAY FROM THE CHALLENGES OF REALITY.

PIESTEWA PEAK, A POPULAR DESTINATION FOR HIKERS TO GET PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE CITY, WILL NOW BE A NEW BRANCH LOCATION FOR THE CITY OF PHOENIX. WHILE CAPTURING SPECTACULAR VIEWS FROM PIESTEWA AND THE VALLEY, USERS WILL EXPERIENCE SUBTLE SHIFTS THROUGHOUT THE LIBRARY WITHIN THE CIRCULATION AND PLACEMENT OF THE UNIQUELY SHAPED LIBRARY. INSPIRED BY THE GEOLOGICAL FACTORS THAT BROUGHT ABOUT THE FORMATION OF THE MOUNTAIN, CREATING AND ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL GIVE ONE THE IMPRESSION OF BEING APART OF THE MOUNTAIN, WHILE TRYING NOT TO DISTURBING THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT.

MONROE STREET ABBEY APARTMENTS // SPRING 2016 // INSTRUCTOR: MARTHE ROWEN
THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN PHOENIX LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF 3RD AVENUE AND MONROE STREET, ALTHOUGH REGISTERED AS A HISTORICAL PLACE HAS BEEN LEFT ABANDONED FOR MANY YEARS WITH ONLY ITS CORE STRUCTURE REMAINING AFTER A FIRE IS SET INSIDE THE CHURCH . THE APARTMENTS SERVE AS A REVITALIZATION OF THE BUILDING THROUGH ADAPTIVE REUSE. APARTMENT UNITS ARE INFILLED AND SUPPORTED BY THE CORE STRUCTURE OF THE CHURCH AND GRADUALLY MOVE AWAY FROM THE CHURCH INTO THE ADJACENT LOT. THE UNITS WITHIN THE CHURCH ARE PLACED WITHIN THE EXISTING EAST AND WEST WINGS AND ARE CONNECTED BY FLOOR PLATES THAT WRAP AROUND THE MOST INNER WALLS CREATING A LOCALIZED COURTYARD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CHURCH. THE ADJACENT LOT GROWS VERTICALLY WHILE GRADUALLY MOVING FATHER AWAY FROM THE CHURCH, RELATING BACK THE CHURCHES BELL TOWER, HOPING TO CREATE A NEW PROMINENT LANDMARK INTO DOWNTOWN PHOENIX WHILE OFFERING SPECTACULAR VIEWS INTO THE CHURCH’S COURTYARD AND THE CITY.

EMERGENT-PARAMETRIC LIBRARY DESIGN // FALL 2016 // INSTRUCTOR: KEEGAN QUICK CONCENTRATION: ARCHITECTURAL INSTALLATION TEAM: DESIGN (COLLABORATIVE STUDIO PROJECT - NOT INDIVIDUAL) CONTRIBUTION: WAY FINDING FOCUS DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER WE WERE INTRODUCED TO EMERGENT BASED DESIGN. THIS TYPE OF DESIGN ALLOWS US TO INFORM OUR DESIGN THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES, VERSUS THE CONVENTIONAL SET OF DESIGN APPROACHES. THESE STUDIES ALLOWED OUR CLASS TO PROPOSE THE REVITALIZATION OF ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY’S DOWNTOWN CAMPUS LIBRARY. MANY STUDENTS ARE UNAWARE THAT THERE IS A LIBRARY LOCATION WITHIN THE DOWNTOWN CAMPUS DUE TO IT BEING HIDDEN IN THE LOWER LEVEL OF ONE OF THE CAMPUS BUILDINGS. WE AS A COLLECTIVE STUDIO DESIGNED A WAY FINDING SCHEME TO AND THROUGHOUT THE LIBRARY ALONG WITH THREE ZONES: GROUP STUDY, SEMI PRIVATE AND SILENT.

THE RIDGE // SUMMER 2016 // CORGAN ARCHITECTS - FIRM WIDE EMPLOYEE SUMMER COMPETITION CONCENTRATION: REVITALIZE , ADAPTIVE REUSE OF PARKING STRUCTURE CONTRIBUTION: INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE/ DESIGN/ INTERIOR RENDERINGS TEAM MEMBERS: JAKE LECEA, THOMAS LUSK, AZAREL DE LA CRUZ AND LAYNA JUSTICE THE RIDGE SEEKS TO RE-PURPOSE AN EXISTING PARKING STRUCTURE ALONG WITH VACANT STOREFRONT REAL ESTATE BY EMBODY THE JOURNEY FROM CANYON VALLEY TO MOUNTAIN TOP THROUGH THE DIVERSE CLIMATES AND RAW, UNFILTERED BEAUTY FOUND IN THE STATE. AS WITH ANY STRUCTURE IN THE DESERT ESPECIALLY IN ARIZONA, SUSTAINABILITY IS PARAMOUNT. ON THE STREET LEVEL, THE EXISTING SHADING STRUCTURE IS RE-PURPOSED TO CREATE A SHADED PEDESTRIAN BYWAY THAT PROVIDES A SAFE SPACE FOR WALKERS AND BIKERS. PARAMETRIC FINS SELF SHADE AND SHIELD THE BUILDING FROM DIRECT SOLAR HEAT GAIN WHILE STILL ALLOWING INDIRECT DAYLIGHTING TO BOUNCE INTO THE GARAGE. ADDITIONALLY, EIGHT ADIABATIC COOLING TOWERS ON THE NORTH AND SOUTH SIDES OF THE BUILDING USE MISTERS TO PASSIVELY CIRCULATE COOL AIR TO STREET LEVEL. THESE TOWERS ARE ESTIMATED TO NATURALLY PROVIDE A 20 DEGREE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE WITHIN A TWENTY FOOT RADIUS OF THE STRUCTURE. LASTLY, THE BUILDING ALSO FEATURES ENERGY-EFFICIENT ROOFTOP BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTO-VOLTAIC PANELS WHICH PROVIDE SHADE FOR THE COMMUNITY GARDEN AND GREEN SPACE WHICH CAN BE RENTED OUT.

DOVE MOUNTAIN K-8 STEM SCHOOL // FALL 2017-2019 // CORGAN MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS PROJECT STARTED IN THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE AND GO THROUGH PORTIONS OF CONSTRUCTION ADMIN PHASE. I WAS ABLE TO CREATE A TOPOGRAPHY MODEL OF THE EXISTING SITE CONDITIONS WHICH WAS LATER USED IN COMMUNITY CHARRETTES THAT ALLOWED OUR TEAM TO OBTAIN INPUT OF WHAT THE COMMUNITY WAS LOOKING FOR WITHIN A NEW SCHOOL. I PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN DESIGNING THE EXTERIOR CMU FACADE, ALONG WITH VARIOUS INTERIOR COMPONENTS WITHIN THE CLASSROOMS AND MAKERSPACE AREAS. THE RENDERINGS ON THIS PAGE WERE PRESENTED DURING BOARD MEETINGS TO THE CLIENTS AND EVENTUALLY USED TO PROMOTE ENROLLMENT ON THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS WEBSITE. THE PROJECT WAS ORIGINALLY MODELED IN REVIT, WHICH THEN I APPLIED MATERIALS AND THEN EXPORTED MODEL INTO ENSCAPE. THESE RENDERINGS WERE ALSO A STARTING REFERENCE USED TO CREATE THE REALISTIC RENDERINGS ON THE PREVIOUS PAGE DONE BY OUR VISUALIZATION TEAM.
