Embromation

With the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was challenged to rethink much of my initial plans concerning face-to-face sessions and other collaborators’ involvement. I had to adapt and create new formats to run Escola Aqui online.

After some attempts, and considering this discouraging time, I created a light and candid activity for participants to play and have fun. I took the word “embromation” as a motif to get together with people in a collaborative digital writing platform. From “embromar” (to trick), this Brazilian slang means “the act of improvising the use of another language.”5

Gathering a Brazilian group, I asked them to answer, “How can you explain what ‘embromation’ is to an English speaker?” With another group of non-Brazilians (apart from myself, who didn’t play), after giving a short definition, I invited them to respond, “How can you explain what ‘embromation’ is from an outsider’s point of view?”

From these meetings, I created Embromation (2020-2021), a two-channel time-lapse video showing the texts being written digitally in different colors as the participants’ voices are heard reading them.
