“There are only patterns, patterns on top of patterns, patterns that affect other patterns. Patterns hidden by patterns. Patterns within patterns. If you watch close, history does nothing but repeat itself. What we call chaos is just patterns we haven’t recognized. What we call random is just patterns we can’t decipher. What we can’t understand we call nonsense. What we can’t read we call gibberish. There is no free will. There are no variables.” Chuck Palahniuk, Survivor

THE IDEA NIKITA Conceptual Photography

‘NIKITA’ is a photography project that was born with the idea of experimenting photo-illustration technique. I took the photography works from the Russian artist Oleg Dou as key inspiration for this project. His technique of digital edition and manipulation of portraits inspired me to begin my own experiments in this field. In this project I used a portrait to explore the airbrush technique in order to get stylised features on the model, and furthermore playing with the proportions of the body. I used this technique, primarily to obtain an artificial look or a somewhat doll like appearance. Something between reality and fiction. As part of the illustration exploration in the project I implemented digital doodling, emphasising a more photo illustration appearance, something that shows a combination of both techniques. For the drawings I used as an inspiration african face and geometrical design.

Edition Process The edition process was all made in photoshop and is devided in four (4) different phases. 1. Photoshoot in studio using fash, in order to have a very detalied and high quality photo.

ORIGINAL PICTURE / step 1

2. Skin whittening and airbrushing on face and body. In this step I smoothed the skin and reduced its saturation.

3. In order to get a stronger doll look I manipulated the proportions of body and face, reducing the shoulders size, making the face look bigger. The face was also alterated, getting more stylied features.

THE IDEA CHAOS A reseach over patterns The research began with an overview on ‘Chaos Theory’ with a special emphasis in its two principles: Fractals and Order/ Disorder. Studying the definition “Fractal is a never ending pattern“ I found myself really interested in the link between this concept and Patterns Design. In this way I started an exploration in the worlds of patterns. Along the process I looked for artists, designers and illustrators who were interested in representing CHAOS by his own vision and aesthetic proposal. Throughout this investigation, being inspired by the material discovered I started my own exploration, creating my own patterns. In the beginning I found my inspiration on elements from the nature and then I jumped into the textile universe of the Wayuu tribe an ethnic group from the north of Colombia. Their economy is based in the production of handmade textiles, which are rich in various pattern design. The designs are a beautiful combination of geometrical forms and bright colours.

24

I used their designs as a root of inspiration during the development stage of my project. In this way I realised that the creation of patterns inspired by my own background was a good way to show my culture and draw a deeper connection to the project. Therefore I drew my patterns on photo portraits of two born european models with a body painting effect, seeking to impregnate them into my culture or my culture into them. In the photographs I applied the same photo illustration technique as in ‘NIKITA’ project (see previous), in order to obtain a manikin look, a plain figure which can be used as a blank white canvas. By drawing patterns on the models body I am looking to evoke a representation of cultural diversity through illustrating something so richly ingrained and linked to the indigenous culture of my Colombian culture through to my present life in Belgium.

In the phase # 3 of my research I got inspired by the using of patterns of the Wayuu Tribe from colombia.

At the same time I was also exploring body painting art and photo illustration techniques in order to find a way to combine both concepts: patterns on the body mixing photography and illustration.

ORDER / DISORDER typeface

THE IDEA ORDER / DISORDER TYPEFACE Typeface inspired in CHAOS

ORDER / DISORDER is a font that is born from the inspiration of a mosaic pattern predominantly seen in floors, which I developed during my research process over chaos. I used the pattern as grid to create irregular shapes inspired by the traditional forms of a classic font. The development of the font is based on illustrating approach, stemming from the interest to create a playful and ornamental typeface.

THE BOOK TYPOGRAPHY SKECTH BOOK Conceptual development process

Use this book in order to begin a deeper exploration of O / D (phase 1). The creative process development preserves the illustration style, seeking to further develop the typeface throughout different phases of the same typographic font. The book includes the design process of each of the phases and the development of different versions of the font, including: bold, bold 3D, outlines and ornaments. In order to create a proposal for visualisation which showed the concept of duality between Order / Disorder, it is born the face # 6 of the font. In this phase by implementing embroided illustrations, I applied different decorative motifs in each font character, leading to create double-sided designs, which display the duality of the concept itself: an organised chaos / a chaotic order.

THE IDEA TYPE & MUSIC TYPEFACE Experimental typography

‘COU COU’ is a 42” stop motion animated piece which is born with the aim to create a conceptual approach of typography implementing an illustrative lettering style. The piece animates the first verse of a song with transitions of illustrated words and cutout paper pieces. The song is from a colombian music mixed genered Jazz/Cumbia band called Monsieur Periné.
