Dear Friends: Welcome to the new and improved, bigger and better North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, which not only has grown to 10 days but this year will be entirely scaffolding free! A year ago, when we made the decision to expand the festival to 10 days, we knew that doing so would require more than just additional film screenings. It was our intent to begin to reach beyond the walls of the Carolina Theatre and to incorporate NCGLFF into Downtown Durham in a variety of ways. We’re starting small, but I’m proud of our efforts. We’ve partnered with the Durham Performing Arts Center to bring comedian Kathy Griffin to kick off the festival on August 10. We’re hosting a karaoke night at Pinhook, and offering an intimate concert with singer/songwriter Matt Alber at the Casbah. These are first steps, and I can assure you that the NCGLFF will continue to grow throughout downtown to make the most of Durham’s wonderful renaissance. The most important area of growth for the festival comes in the films. That’s ultimately why we come together each year, isn’t it? The festival represents the broadest range of LGBT cinema, in dramas and comedies, features and shorts, narratives and documentaries. The lineup this year includes a record 124 titles, up from 83 last year. Films from 18 countries – including Israel and Iran – are represented. Among those I’m personally looking forward to seeing are Cloudburst, the new lesbian feature from Olympia Dukakis, and Yossi, the 10-years-later follow-up to the groundbreaking Israeli film Yossi and Jagger. All of the films in this year’s festival are worthy participants, and I truly hope you’ll enjoy as many as possible throughout the 10-day festival. I wish to take this opportunity to thank Jim Carl, Senior Director of the Carolina Theatre, whose efforts in programming the festival and managing the needs of dozens of filmmakers, are Herculean. I am also extremely grateful to those that serve on committees to program and promote the festival, and to the many volunteers who will give their time during the festival to help provide our guests with a first-class experience. All of us at the Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc. owe a particular debt of gratitude to all of you, who have supported the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival for so many years in so many ways. We’ve deepened our commitment to the festival because of your ongoing support, and we hope that the new format provides you with an enjoyable time, for 10 days or however long you can spend with us. Regards,

Jim Carl

SENI OR DIRE CTOR

When Can’t Stop The Music premiered on HBO, my mother forbid me to watch it. She offered not a single explanation, except it would be a real bad sin to cross her. It wasn’t until years later I realized why my mother didn’t want me watching Can’t Stop The Music. It was because she’d found out that The Village People were queer. In the early 1980s, I knew of only a single gay person living in Sweetwater, Texas (population: 11,500). He was Mexican, wore shoulder-length hair, and possessed a rock star’s don’t-give-a-damn attitude that intimidated me. My friends called him Sweetwater’s Only Gay Dude. My mother noticed him one afternoon as we were driving to Dillards and stunned the pretty fool out of me by admitting she’d gone to high school with him. I never actually used the word, “gay” but made it clear I’d heard certain delicious rumors about him. My mother stopped at the next red light and explained that Sweetwater’s Only Gay Dude was a decorated Vietnam vet, as if that settled the issue. “His privates were blown off during the war,” she said. “He has no other choice.” My mother relocated to Los Angeles in 1982. For years, I visited her and grew to know her circle of friends; those people unlike herself whom she would have never met if she’d stayed in Sweetwater. They were a curious bunch. One of her best friends was a hilarious dark-haired librarian in his mid-20s named Dan. Together, he and my mother could laugh for hours. One day, Dan awoke to a dull pain in his left knee. He went to the emergency room for a check-up and was immediately placed in intensive care. My mother went to visit him, laying under a plastic tent, and was barely allowed to speak with him, much less allowed to laugh with him. She told me this story a few days after he died. This was Los Angeles, 1982. Dan was one of the early victims of AIDS. So little was known about the disease in those days that the news both shocked my mother and changed her. I noticed that she became less judgmental of people, especially people unlike herself. I also noticed she became far more cautious about criticizing those around her, as if she was afraid her comments might be taken the wrong way. I’ve been the head programmer of the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival since 1995 but it was only a few years ago that I told my mother about the festival’s existence at all. “A gay and lesbian film festival?” she repeated on the phone, as if tasting every word. I could mentally picture her reaction. All at once, we were driving to Dillards again. “What fun!” she finally laughed. I could hear the excitement in her voice, something I would have never anticipated. I saw her this last Christmas. We met in San Antonio and as we drove to the Riverwalk, my mother put a CD into the car’s player. It was The Village People’s “YMCA.”

ADVENTURES BEYOND THE SEA

Men’s International Drama Shorts (Various Countries, 2012, 92 min) In post-Katrina New Orleans, street hustler Red sells carnations to support himself and his disabled lover, Sal in The Price of Flowers. Julian’s first time will be a day to remember in Julian. When juvenile inmate Malcolm is offered a chance at parole in The Wilding, he is torn between his chance for freedom and protecting the one he loves. In Pink and Green, Mario is a passionate Brazilian man living with his American partner Adam in L.A. When Mario’s work visa is not renewed the only way he can legally remain in the country is to marry a woman. The Last Waltz tells the story of Anny Salerni, the charismatic owner of Melbourne’s only gay and lesbian ballroom dancing studio, who has devoted the last 14 years of her life to creating her own fabulous world of same-sex dance sports.

BEAUTY

(South Africa, 2012, 98 min) “It’s important to know yourself,” states Francois, the troubled and controversial protagonist of the provocative South African feature Beauty. Yet so extreme is this middle-aged married man’s selfdenial that he is tragically unable to heed his own words of wisdom. Successful businessman Francois (Deon Lotz), an Afrikaner minority in his rapidly changing country, is introduced as a devoted husband and proud papa presiding over his daughter’s nuptials, yet he’s focused more on wedding guest Christian (studly model Charlie Keegan), the college-grad son of an old friend. As his obsession with the cocksure young man intensifies—spying on Christian sunbathing and drunk-dialing him while on a bender at a hellish gay bar, all leading up to a shocking act of violence.

CALLING MR. RIGHT

Men’s International Comedy Shorts (Various Countries, 2012, 82 min) Breaking up is hard to do, but I’m in the Mood for Love reminds us that still sharing that favorite restaurant with an ex can be harder. After winning the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant on her home planet, Valmay the Visitor of Beep Beep Beep Bleetlebox 967 is awarded the glory of being sent to Earth as an ambassador. Two men meet up at lunchtime for some fast backseat action in Fuckbuddies. Just the Tip is an off-beat story about all the horrible things friends do to each other. White Paper is a charming short from Iran about six different-colored kids who are driven from their families for being many-hued in a gray world. A sex therapist is determined to help her son with his relationship issues in The Empty Nest. Two gay sperms were never meant to meet In The Beginning, but what if Life decides otherwise? MEN

CLOUDBURST

(Canada, 2012, 93 min) As if watching Academy Award-winning Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) hysterically wield a vibrator isn’t enough reason to see this film, Cloudburst is one of the funniest, romantic and moving films around. Dot (Brenda Fricker) and Stella (Olympia Dukakis) are like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, if they’d made it to their golden years, retired on the Maine coastline and both happened to be Bonnie. But 31 years of living together blissfully, despite Stella’s brashness and Dottie’s increasing fatigue, gets tossed into jeopardy when Dot’s granddaughter—who seems daftly blind to the idea that grandma’s roommate might also be her lover—has her committed to an institution. Stella busts her out, and they make a break for Canada to get married, picking up a young male hitchhiker (Ryan Doucette) who tags along for the ride.

CODEPENDENT LESBIAN SPACE ALIEN SEEKS SAME

(US, 2011, 76 min) Danger! The ozone layer of planet Zots is disappearing due to an overabundance of emotion! What can a lesbian space alien do to save her world? Well, board a flying saucer of course, and take a trip to New York City where hearts will be broken and “big feelings” will be overcome. Codependent Barr, promiscuous Zylar, and sweet Zoinx are three shiny-headed space aliens on a mission of heartbreak. Soup up your cardboard spaceship, put on your tinfoil hat, and find the nearest wormhole to claim your seats for the hilarious Sundance hit Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same.

DIFFICULT LOVE & GENERATIONS (Canada, 2012, 78 min) Difficult Love is an intimate, thought-provoking portrait of internationally celebrated South African lesbian photographer, Zanele Muholi, and her highly personal take on the challenges facing black lesbians in South Africa today. The film features interviews with Muholi as well as with her friends, colleagues and peers, and provides a compelling overview of the artist, her life and her work. This poignant documentary takes us behind the façade of art making and shares with us the highly political environment Muholi must navigate in order to bring her lush photographs to light. Preceded by: Celebrating Barbara Hammer’s spontaneous shooting style and dense editing montage with young filmmaker Gina Carducci’s studied cinematography, the two filmmakers, Generations apart in age, shoot the last days of Astroland in Coney Island, New York. DON’T CRY OUT LOUD

Women’s Drama Shorts (Various Countries, 2012, 87 min) Emmy kisses a girl on the playground and is left feeling isolated and alone in The Maiden and The Princess. When gunshots ring out at school, library geek Alex hides with popular girl Ruby. Will Alex find the courage to reveal her true desire amid overwhelming fear while Under Pressure? For Kerstin and Petra in Fresh Air Therapy 2 their relationship is not their only problem, as they spend a night in a hotel, with curious consequences. For a group of women in the German wilderness, a sexy and dangerous operation might have unexpected results in Deep Down Ballet. And two Brazilian girls discover their desires while composing a song in What Could It Be?

ELLIOT LOVES (US, 2012, 92 min)

Finding love in the big city is never easy. But it’s always entertaining in this bouncy romantic comedy from first time feature director Terracino. Elliot is an earnest twenty-one year-old Dominican American looking for love in all the wrong places. Bubbling with wistful enthusiasm, Elliot attacks each day in search of Mr. Right, despite consistently frustrating results. Amidst a chaotic upbringing, including a colorful assortment of talkative relatives, young Elliot exhibits wisdom beyond his years. The juxtaposition of Elliot’s past and present paints a sweet, complex character study of a young gay man trying to find love and meaning in the big city.

FIND THE PHOENIX FOR THE FLAME

Men’s US Drama Shorts (US, 2012, 85 min) Strip is about Brent, a recently divorced businessman in Las Vegas who visits a straight nightclub, and gets more than he gambled for when he meets blonde siren Brandi. Absolutely Positive is a dramatic short film that follows four characters, all from different walks of life, as they get tested for HIV. Shot during and around the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, The Durham Free Hugs Campaign is a fantastic short film about the transformative power of a hug! Fallen Comrade is a story about the bond between two soldiers and the impact after one is lost in combat. When Gabe and Jonathan fall in love in the 1940s, they decide to spend their life together in secret in The Apple Tree. MEN

GAYBY (US, 2012, 83 min) What happens when a straight girl and her best gay male friend’s biological clocks both kick into overdrive, but there’s no romantic partner on the horizon for either of them? Jenn and her gay BFF Matt find themselves in their thirties, single and dealing with a frustrating dating scene in New York City. Remembering a pact they made in college, they decide to jumpstart adulthood by having a child together. Distrustful of doctors and fertility treatments, they agree to approach things “the old fashioned way.” Matt’s desperate attempts to get over his ex-boyfriend, Jenn’s herbally enhanced sex drive, and their own awkward attempts to conceive lead to some of the most hilarious sex scenes since Bridesmaids.

THE GIRLS KNOW THEIR STUFF

Women’s Comedy Shorts (US, 2012, 74 min) In the anti-romantic comedy Coffee & Pie a couple must come to term with the fact that theirs is a love that could never be. Flyers asks what happens when everyone else sees the sign before you do? A woman sees the girl of her dreams on the train home from work. Will she dare take the plunge in The Bus Pass? The Not So Subtle Subtext is a video piece that explores the sub-textual nature of Xena: Warrior Princess. Kim just got engaged in Always Again, but when a friend congratulates her. Kim is told off for being too out by a gay friend. A woman commits a tryst on the eve of her wedding night and in desperation, turns to a lesbian charlatan for hymen help in the over-the-top period musical comedy Ketheron’s Bucket-Mending and Hymen Emporium. Sometimes People... is the story of two women who meet, fall for each other, and then explode violently upon touching. Office Sweater is camp with a horror bent. In Cherry Bomb, Jessie has a crush on Katie and the rest could be pop music history. Pro Homo is a little ditty about stereotypes.

GREASE SING-A-LONG

(US, PG-13, 1978, 110 min) If your chills are multiplying, it’s probably because Grease is coming to the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Paramount Pictures is re-releasing the 1978 musical hit, this time in a singalong version with animated subtitles. Viewers can decide all over again whether or not Rizzo (Stockard Channing), one of the more world-weary teens on film, could do anything worse than go with a boy or two. Teens Like Phil focuses on two gay teens struggling to come to terms with their repressed sexuality, resulting in tragic consequences. On the morning of his annual gay pride party, Stephen is forced to take in his homophobic father who disowned him over 20 years ago in Pride. The Men’s Room is an emotionally charged short film dealing with explicit themes of male sexuality, intimacy, and the concept of public decency. Musician and artist Nhojj delivers an amazing rendition of Amazing Grace in his music video extolling marriage equality.

I LOVE YOU TO DEATH

Men’s Dark Shorts (Various Countries, 2012, 88 min) When two couples, one gay and one straight, go on The Hike in the wilderness, things don’t go as planned. I STAND CORRECTED (US, 2012, 83 min)

Over the course of more than two decades, Jennifer Leitham, then John, built a successful career as a jazz musician; a virtuoso on the upright bass who played in the Tonight Show Band and toured with both Doc Severinsen and with Mel Tormé for years. Though successful professionally, Leitham had been living a fractured life: as John out in the world and as Jennifer at home. In 2005, that all changed, when Leitham underwent sexual reassignment surgery and fully embraced life as Jennifer. Step on stage with this talented and self-confident woman as she shares her challenging and courageous journey, revealing all of the self-doubts and fears, risks and rewards and joys and disappointments that her transition entailed. I WANT YOUR LOVE (US, 2012, 112 min) Mature audiences only

I Want Your Love tells the story of Jesse, a scruffy, thirty-ish performance artist living in San Francisco. After a decade surviving hand-to-mouth in the gay mecca, he is forced to move back to bland but affordable Ohio. Faced with fears of an uncertain future and career, Jesse shows ambivalence about the going-away party being thrown by his BFF/roommate. If you took the raw, unsimulated sex of Shortbus and the naked, unflinching honesty of Weekend, then tailored it to the Butt generation, you’d have something akin to the charmingly low-key yet in-your-face I Want Your Love. Yes, a lot is on camera, but there’s an emotional maturity to the story and naturalistic performances that subverts and transcends your run-of-the-mill adult film flick. Preceded by: Alex is ready to lose his virginity to Daniel but Daniel’s trying to save up something big for his cam fans in 10 Days (Load). And if you’ve got a taste for the naked male form, wait ‘til you see these gay couples as they awake for the day in Mates.

JOE + BELLE (Israel, 2012, 80 min)

Joe and Belle meet when Belle decides to commit suicide in Joe’s bathtub, in this quirky black comedy from Israeli triple threat writer/ director/star Veronica Kedar. Set in Tel Aviv during the shelling of the town of Sderot, this film takes an after-school special’s worth of serious subject matter and playfully turns it upside down. At first, sexy, cynical Joe, a drug dealer with ex-boyfriend troubles, doesn’t have the time or patience for the depressive Belle. However, the unlikely pair is forced together by a series of mishaps. Holed up with Belle in a fleabag hotel, Joe begins to reconsider her initial reaction to lesbian sex (“yuck!”) and soon is trying it on for size. In the end, Joe + Belle is more screwball comedy than Thelma and Louise; just under the movie’s bad-girl vibe is a sweet rom-com waiting to come out. In Hebrew with English subtitles

JOSHUA TREE, 1951: A PORTRAIT OF JAMES DEAN

(US, 2012, 94 min) Grab your Wayfarers and hop in a fifties vintage car for a road trip to Joshua Tree, 1951 in this sumptuously filmed, neo-noir portrait of James Dean just before he finds fame. James Preston, cast as Dean, bears a stunning and strikingly handsome resemblance to the outsider icon. The film seeks to redefine Dean for a new generation, by examining his complicated sexuality and his formative relationships. Dean’s roommate and fellow struggling actor (Dan Glenn) is along for the ride from their Santa Monica apartment to the desert. The roommate is a quiet source of refuge as well as a passport to a world of cultural refinement. Accompanying them is femme fatale, Violet (Dalilah Rain), a would-be starlet who struggles to survive within the postwar Hollywood machine.

KINGS AND QUEENS (US, 2012, 84 min) In 2011, Kings and Queens screened as a short for the NCGLFF, presenting the Channel family and answering the question “who’s your momma?” With dressing room hilarity, Kings and Queens reveals what is a drag mom and kid. This year’s feature continues the immersion into local families and those who operate outside of them. LaWanda Jackson (reigning MS Gay US of A) opens her heart and joins the soulful stories of drag, evolution, and love. This feature comes with a warning label: These drag queen buddhas are real. You think it is about drag but find out about you! Preceded by: In Love and Other Red Spot Specials, there is a small Australian town with 9,684 residents, one supermarket, six sets of traffic lights, and one shoplifting transvestite on an extravagant quest for love. Like the title character on Ugly Betty, Randall O’Brien knows the difficulties of following your heart and pursuing one’s dreams in Freak.

KISS ME (Sweden, 2012, 107 min) Mia is anxious about going to her father’s birthday/engagement party for numerous reasons. Once in the presence of her father, and in observing how different he is with his fiancée, Elisabeth, Mia finds herself resentful …especially when her father leaves her stranded on an island with her new “family.” Mia is forced to spend time with Frida, Elisabeth’s daughter. Light and easygoing, Frida can’t help but tease Mia to get her out of her shell. This very quickly ends up also getting Mia out of her clothes after a chemistry-filled moment in the forest and a magical midnight swim. As the two women begin a heavy and passionate love affair, they must both figure out how this surprising turn of events will fit into their current lives and their new family dynamic. In Swedish with English subtitles

LOVE FREE OR DIE (US, 2012, 83 min)

Director Macky Alston (Family Name) and producer Sandra Itkoff (The Killer Within) bring to life the riveting story of Gene Robinson and the Episcopal Church at a crossroads. As the first openly gay and partnered Episcopal bishop, Robinson leads the fight for LGBT justice as the Church threatens to split over the controversy. Shall they bless same-sex unions and consecrate more partnered LGBT bishops? Or hew closer to scripture and welcome only LGBT celibates? Will love triumph over fear to spur this hallowed institution to grow with the times?

MAPLE SYRUP PIE

Men’s Canadian Shorts (Canada, 2012, 88 min) Jamie is an African-American teenager grappling with his sexual identity. When one of his gang initiates the bullying of an openly gay classmate, Jamie uses his wits to try and prevent it, but he is forced to face his fears head on in Change. Steam is Steam is set in Montreal 1952, as teenager Samuel brings his friend Julien to the neighborhood steam bath for his weekly routine with Dad. Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona is the story of two young lovers separated by their rival fraternities. Jack escapes his reality of straight A’s and student council by delving into the world of online hook-ups in Student Body. House for Sale is not a film about real estate or a sales transaction. It’s about the meaning of home.

MARGARITA (Canada, 2012, 91 min) Margarita (Nicola Correia-Damude) is plagued with problems: she can’t stop loving her girlfriend Jane, who is reluctant to commit to their relationship; she can’t get Carlos to stop loving her, though she continually declares that she’s a lesbian, and she can’t get the pesky immigration officers off her case...well, she is living illegally in Canada, but still, those officers are really pesky! Margarita works as a live-in nanny for affluent power-couple Gail and Ben, caring for their teenage daughter Mali. Though the couple are both medical professionals, they’ve been unable to stave off the effects of a struggling economy. As they scrutinize their expenses in search of any cost-cutting measure, it becomes obvious that their greatest financial extravagance is Margarita. But dismissing the nanny is easier said than done. They love her like family; her lesbian handiness has saved them countless expense, and she has single-handedly raised the acidtongued, angst-ridden teen, Mali. Margarita is not just part of their family, she is the heart that enables them to function. THE MEN NEXT DOOR (US, 2012, 95 min) From Guest House Films and the prolific team of writer/director Rob Williams and producer Rodney Johnson (Role/Play, Make The Yuletide Gay, 3-Day Weekend) comes a romantic comedy about finding love a little too close to home. As he reluctantly celebrates his 40th birthday, gay Pilates instructor Doug (Eric Dean) finds himself falling for two very different but equally lovable men: Jacob, a secure 50-year-old (Michael Nicklin) who came out later in life, and Colton, an adventurous 30-year-old (Benjamin Lutz) who literally is the boy next door. What he doesn’t know is that the two men are, in fact, father and son. How long can Doug juggle both relationships before everyone finds out the truth? The Men Next Door features Mark Cirillo (The Seminarian), Ronnie Kroell (Eating Out: Drama Camp), Christopher Schram (Requited), David Alanson (Bite Marks) and Heidi Rhodes.

Colorful balloon dresses, long party nights in Berlin’s trendy clubs with drag queen Nina Queer and erotic evenings on the dining table – this is the chaotic relationship of the unequal couple of Ernst and Tobias. Though opposites attract, respectable banker Ernst is often unsure, whether bubbly and always cheerful Tobias takes their relationship as seriously as he does. Soon they rise to a challenge of every relationship: everyday living together and mutual trust. The sudden appearance of Uta, Ernst’s eccentric school friend, fundamentally changes their relationship. Uta forges out a scheming plan, which Ernst completely falls for. Together with his friends, Tobias spares no efforts to checkmate the unwelcome guest as soon as possible – and sets events in motion that increasingly get out of control. In German with English subtitles.

M.I. A DIFFERENT KIND OF GIRL (US, 2012, 71 min) Long a beloved character, the Drag Queen or male impersonator of feminine gender identity, has shone on stage and in screen. Many films have brought drag queens to mainstream America. Rarely, however, do we encounter drag ‘kings’ or female performers of masculine gender identity in film and on stage despite the ever-presence of women that bend the boundaries of female gender identity in the African-American and LGBT communities. This film is about a titlewinning male impersonator who struggles to find acceptance from her family, her community and the male-dominated drag culture. Preceded by: A lighthearted tale of a landlocked pirate determined to find her crew, A Pirate in Alphabet City raises questions about identity, belonging and tolerance in the LGBT community.

With Dean’s support, Morgan decides to reenter the same race where he lost the use of his legs. His obsessive training causes Morgan to ignore responsibilities and commitment to family, friends and finding a job. After Morgan collapses from the physical strain, Dean pleads for Morgan to drop from the race, to no avail. Alone once more, Morgan takes a final risk.

When Mari moves in across the street from Yolanda, their friendship grows. Lost in their private world of unspoken affection, lingering gazes, and heart-felt confessions of uncertain futures, Yolanda’s grades begin to slip while Mari’s focus drifts away from her duties at a new job, and they are forced to choose between their obligations to others and staying true to themselves. NATE AND MARGARET

(US, 2012, 78 min) Smart, poignant and well written film about Nate (Tyler Ross), a 19 year old film student, and Margaret (Natalie West), a 52 year old spinster, who are best friends in an odd, quirky, totally working kind of way... until Nate’s audacious classmate Darla (Gaby Hoffman) sets him up on a date with James (Conor McCahill). Nate’s new life shakes apart his friendship with Margaret, who goes off on her own to start a career as a stand-up comedian.

NORTH SEA TEXAS (Denmark, 2012, 96 min)

In this charming, sexy coming-of-age story set along the Belgian coastline in the early 1970s, Pim is a boy unafraid of his predilection for dressing up in women’s clothes, putting on makeup or pining for the handsome, older boy who lives next door. His mom Yvette is a blowsy woman who spends more time in the pub than she does with her son, so she is somewhat oblivious to his burgeoning sexuality. Pim gets more attention from the neighbors where single mom Marcella feeds him, daughter Sabrina fawns over him, and son Gino isn’t averse to being fondled by him. Adolescence is never easy; however, and Pim’s clandestine relationship is complicated by Gino’s new girlfriend and the arrival of a sexy boarder named Zoltan to Yvette’s household. Effortlessly mingling these supporting characters and their stories with the trajectory of Pim’s journey toward self-acceptance, North Sea Texas delights with its presentation of a bold central character pursuing his desires headlong. Dutch with English subtitles.

Filled to the brink with aching desire, the sexual chemistry is off the charts between ’90s TV icon Barbara Niven as the beautiful blond client and out lesbian actress Jessica Clark as the smokin’ hot hooker who truly does have a heart of gold. UNFIT: WARD VS. WARD

(US, 2012, 74 min) Who’s the better parent: a convicted murderer or a lesbian? A question that seems absurd to most of us was grist for a contentious and nightmarish custody battle that played out in Florida state courts in the mid-1990s. UNFIT: Ward vs. Ward tells the heartbreaking and astonishing story of devoted mother and out lesbian Mary Ward, who found herself fighting John Ward, her convicted murderer exhusband, for custody of their 11-year-old daughter, Cassey. The story of Mary’s struggle to prevent deadbeat dad John—who served eight years for murdering his first wife and had shown little or no interest in his daughter before Mary petitioned for an increase in child support payments—from gaining custody of Cassey is told through interviews with family, friends and attorneys.”

THE WISE KIDS (US, 2012, 95 min)

Messages are quiet and deep in Stephen Cone’s brilliantly sweet coming-of-age drama about being gay and Southern Baptist in middle-class Charleston, South Carolina. Best friends Brea, Tim and Laura are getting ready for college—Tim has plans for film school at NYU; and Brea, the preacher’s daughter, wonders where school will take her as she grapples with serious questions of her faith. Laura, the most enthusiastically Christian of the group, wants to attend a Christ-centered college, and this starts to drive a wedge between the friends. They might know their life is cloistered and that there’s more out there in the world than Easter pageants and Sunday services. But this is a gorgeously realized, complex story where the safeties of home and hearth are not so stifling that they rebel—these kids are quietly grateful for their lives and their parents. As Tim grapples with his homosexuality and coming out, his close friends and relatives react in different ways.

WISH ME AWAY (US, 2012, 96 min)

Country singer Chely Wright knew she was a lesbian at a young age, but she instinctively knew that her orientation was in direct conflict with her aspirations to one day perform at the Grand Ole Opry. Wish Me Away chronicles the days leading up to Wright’s coming out announcement on national television in 2010, and it provides both an intimate look at the fear and torment behind her high-risk decision and a revealing glimpse into the multi-media P.R. campaign that attended her brave act of self-exposure. Wish Me Away shows both the devastation of her own internalized homophobia, which led to Chely putting a gun in her mouth, and the transformational power of living an authentic life.

YOSSI (Israel, 2012, 83 min)

Ten years ago, Eytan Fox’s Yossi and Jagger became a major event movie in Israel because of its ostensibly taboo subject matter: a pair of male Israeli soldiers in love. In the ensuing years, Fox has emerged as one of Israel’s most prominent filmmakers, an increasingly confident director able to use Western genres to explore modern Israeli society with a deeply human touch. Yossi and Jagger showed the potential for a complex exploration of gay identity in modern Israel that the director has now fully realized with a sequel of sorts, Yossi, possibly his most accomplished work to date. At the end of Yossi and Jagger, the energetic Lior Amichai “Jagger” (Yehuda Levi) tragically died on the battlefield before he and Yossi managed to resolve their differences. Having carried on a clandestine affair for two years, the couple had yet to come out to their families, and while Jagger insisted they do so upon returning from military duty, the paranoid Yossi (Ohad Knoller) preferred to stay in the closet. As its title implies, Yossi catches up with the character 10 years later and finds him still a solitary figure, haunted by Jagger’s death and more closeted than ever. In Hebrew with English subtitles
