Dear Friends: Welcome to the 19th North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, our annual cinematic exploration of the broad spectrum of lives and experiences that make up the LGBT community. As we approach the festival’s 20th Anniversary, we’re often driven to think about the role NCGLFF plays in a day when the world of gay cinema is available for streaming at home. When this festival began nearly two decades ago, that certainly wasn’t the case. NCGLFF gave filmgoers a chance to see titles that might never arrive in their local video store. Today, although the films may become readily available to anyone who wants to see them, the annual selections chosen by our Programming Committee represent so much more than just a collection of movies – they’re a snapshot in time of where our community stands at this particular time. The films in each year’s festival relate to each other in a variety of ways, and as a whole offer not only entertainment but an opportunity for contemplation through the presentation of serious themes of race, religion, and identity.

BOB NOCEK

P R E S I D E N T/ C E O

In Al Nisa, filmmaker Red Summer explores the efforts of five women who sought to establish a community for Black Muslim Lesbians in Atlanta. In Kidnapped for Christ, we learn about American teenagers ripped from their homes and sent to a Christian behavior modification program in the Dominican Republic. And Lady Valor presents the journey of former U.S. Navy SEAL Christopher Beck after his transition to Kristin Beck, who publicly revealed her story on national television, to the surprise of family, friends, and colleagues. Even To Be Takei, an affectionate look at icon and actor George Takei, delves into his childhood in Japanese-American internment camps. The festival isn’t all seriousness this year, particularly with the introduction of Retrofantastique, a four-night festival-within-a-festival of classic double features, concluding with the camp of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert paired with John Waters’ Polyester. I hope you enjoy the efforts of our Programming Committee in putting together this year’s lineup. I also want to thank all of our dedicated volunteers as well as the Carolina Theatre staff for their tireless hard work in keeping NCGLFF one of our greatest weeks of the year. Warmest regards,

WHAT IS RETROFANTASTIQUE?

JIM CARL

SENIOR DIRECTOR

Let’s be honest: We all know who the probable target audience is for Mommie Dearest and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. For many years I insisted, like so many other fans, that Retro was a film series for people who liked classic scary movies and the occasional scifi epic. The day is here to recognize that the audience has changed. If you’ve been coming to Retro for some time, you and I both know that the crowds are getting bigger and more diverse, and the fact is, it’s time to address that change. The days of only screening movies like The Exorcist, Halloween, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers are over. When Annie Hall outdraws The Howling by a large margin (as it did this past Spring 2014), you have to examine what’s happening and who’s sitting in the theatre. Retro always has been—and always will be—a series for the fans. I need to recognize that our fans in 2014 aren’t necessarily of the same make-up and orientation as the ones who first came to this series in 1998. In selecting these movies, I’ve worked hard to please fans of the original series as well as acknowledge those who just newly-arrived at our gates. For me, the sense of community we’ve created over the past 16 years is an inescapable part of what Retro is now about. Therefore, my goal these days is not just to program a range of great classic movies but to program a far-reaching series that appeals to all of our modern community. This is a good thing. And thus, I’m proud to announce the inclusion of Retrofantastique in 2014. Browsing through the titles, you might sense a gravitational alignment toward the campy, the esoteric, and the bemused. This is not unintentional. The overlying theme to this newest edition to the series is fun and light-heartedness, first and foremost. There are plenty of other movies screening during Retro which address the headier issues and have won awards. So, for four weekdays during the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in August 2014, I invite you to experience some of the wittiest, smartaleckiest motion pictures ever made with an audience who can probably quote them with pitch-perfect enunciation.

AL NISA: BLACK MUSLIM WOMEN IN ATLANTA’S GAY MECCA

(65 min, USA) Al Nisa: Muslim Women in Atlanta’s Gay Mecca is the story of how filmmaker Red Summer brought five women together who sought to establish a community, where there was none, for Black Muslim Lesbians in Atlanta. Atlanta is considered the Black Gay Mecca of the United States. This is a contradiction of terms for most. However, within the Gay community of Atlanta, there is an even smaller community of women who identify as both Lesbian and Muslim.

ALL OVER THE PLACE

Men’s International Shorts (Various Countries, 101 min) A couple review their time from first meeting to parting in Spain’s All the Sun in the World. Ireland’s Barry’s Bespoke Bakery is a lavish wonderland of refined cakes, owned by the fastidious pâtissier, Barry, where everything has its place, except for his talented employee Brian. The love of Célio and Sofia comes under the influence of Dario whose return to his former school ignites a torrent of emotions and lingering glances in Brazil’s Before Words. Caged is a short film made for educational purposes in the Netherlands. It’s about young people exploring their sexuality and how their friends cope with that. Ten San Francisco men over forty reflect on their identity and on open relationships in their city in Portugese’s Daddies. Indigo recalls her life from her birth till the event which led her to emancipate. But when she decides to get back Indigo, things get more complicated in Belgium’s Electric Indigo. At his grandfather’s wake, Neil struggles to stay in control when an offensive guest shows up in Australia’s Trunk. FREE! FAMILY DAY!

AN AMERICAN TAIL

(80 min, USA) Fievel Mousekewitz and his family of Russian-Jewish mice escape from their homeland in the late 1800s, boarding a boat headed toward America to evade the Czarist rule of the Russian cats. Fievel, however, is separated from his family upon his arrival in New York City, and he discovers to his horror that there are cats in America too (his father said there weren’t). Fievel meets his share of friendly and hostile mice, and he eventually befriends a cat as well. Former Disney animator Don Bluth co-produced and directed this often heartwarming yarn, the first animated feature presented by Steven Spielberg.

APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

(86 min, USA) Shirin is struggling to become an ideal Persian daughter, politically correct bisexual and hip young Brooklynite. But she’s not quite Persian enough, not quite gay enough, not quite anything enough. She fails miserably in her attempt at all identities, and being without a cliché to hold onto can be a lonely experience. After being dumped by her girlfriend Maxine, Shirin faces an unimaginable task: trading the idyllic lesbian haven of Park Slope for a shared artist’s loft in Bushwick. Unable to let go of the memories of their excruciating highs and lows, the endearingly superficial narcissist finds herself plotting to win back her ex.

BEDSIDE MANNERS

Men’s Drama Programs (USA, 79 min) Carl is the eldest of three brothers and is expected to be a role model for the family. However, youngest brother Adam’s unexpected hostility reveals the problems with Carl’s choices in Kimchi Fried Dumplings. After the death of his father, Jason is led to confronting the truth in Jason’s Dad. A closeted Latino barber quietly falls in love with a handsome stranger over the course of a haircut in a macho Brooklyn hood in Barrio Boy. After his father says playing with dolls is for girls, young Bobby is sent on a personal mission to find what he should be playing with in Barbie Boy. A young man comes to terms with his sexuality and his hidden love for his best friend in Ronny and I. A sexually-confused eighth-grader attempts to regain his dignity after being bullied by the cool kid whom he privately fantasizes about in Kissing Drew.

BORN TO FLY: ELIZABETH STREB VS. GRAVITY

(82 min, USA) Not just a choreographer, Elizabeth Streb is a wildly extreme action architect. Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity traces the evolution of Streb’s movement philosophy as she pushes herself and her dancers from the ground, to the wall, to the sky. Guided by Streb’s theory of movement—to walk on walls, dive through glass, move so fast you disappear and…fly; the film asks: Can adrenaline be a form of medicine? When does movement become art? Why be a part of it? How do race, gender, sexuality, and class appear on the dancers’ performances, on their bodies? Wrestling these questions, the film offers an exhilarating tale of the necessity of art, inspiring a broad audience, hungry for a more tactile and fierce existence in the world.

BOY MEETS GIRL

(95 min, USA) Eric Schaeffer’s new film, Boy Meets Girl is a poignant, sexy, romantic coming of age comedy about three twenty year-olds living in Kentucky: Robby and his best friend since childhood, Ricky, a gorgeous transgender girl, have never dated. Lamenting the lack of eligible bachelors, Ricky considers dating a girl. In walks Francesca, a beautiful young debutante waiting for her Marine fiancé to return from the war. Ricky and Francesca strike up a friendship, and maybe a little more, which forces Robby to face his true feelings for Ricky. This is a sex/human positive modern fable and identification with its story crosses all gender and sexual orientation lines.

BOYS (Jongens)

(78 min, Netherlands) In this beautiful and uplifting gay romance, two teen track stars discover first love. Chiseled Sieger, is a thoughtful 15-year-old who grapples mightily with his emerging gayness. His love interest is the equally handsome, free-spirited and outgoing Marc. The romance between them unfolds with a palpable sense of longing — and an aching sequence of heartache as Sieger tries to fight the inevitable. With its authentic and perfectly poignant tone Boys ranks as one of the most wholesomely romantic gay teen films ever. Dutch with English Subtitles

BROKEN GARDENIAS

(88 min, USA) Shy, unblossomed Jenni is about to attempt suicide when Sam, a mysterious stranger in the right place at the right time, unexpectedly rescues her. With her Justin Bieber smile, switchblade, and wry life philosophy, Sam persuades Jenni to ditch her despair and embark on an odyssey in search of her father, who disappeared when she was a kid. In a not-quite-borrowed car, they set out for Los Angeles with only a faded family photo and Sam’s gutsy street smarts to guide them. Through navigating encounters with a host of wacky characters, each spurring her closer to her father—and to Sam—Jenni gets lessons on everything from driving a van to driving a vulva, and her life begins to bloom. BRUNO AND EARLENE GO TO VEGAS

(97 min, UK) Headstrong Earlene makes a discovery that she is totally unprepared for. Acting on impulses, she leaves everything behind and heads to LA. The perfect distraction comes along in the shape of the mysterious Bruno, a wandering intersex teenager she meets at Venice Beach. The two loners become fast friends, but when Earlene becomes embroiled in one of Bruno’s home rental scams, whilst simultaneously discovering just what lengths he will go to score some cash, she takes the youth under her wing and drives off into the desert. Along the way they meet a sexually confused carjacker, a pair of Scottish ex-strippers, a tap-dancing drag queen and many more like-minded runaways – who are all looking for a way out in the world.

BUT I’M A GENDERQUEER

Transgender Shorts (Various Countries, 88 min) Dale Michaels is a transgender man with a more than just one obvious secret in Shirts Vs. Skins. In Deflated, a young boy is eager to get a new ball with his allowance. But ultimately he must make a choice: take home one of the bright pink balls or the deflated green ball? What’s What tips its hat to the tradition of cross-dressing and gender-bending entertainment in twentieth-century vaudeville. But I’m a Genderqueer is one person’s journey through the scary but also magical land of identity crisis. A grieving Chicana mother confronts an uninvited family member in You’re Dead to Me. The Heart’s Mouth is a lush, Edwardian fantasia that celebrates nature, poetry and queer-transgender desire. When his ex-girlfriend suddenly doesn’t recognize him anymore, Arnaud goes to a pub with a few friends to get the support he needs in Fais Pas Genre. A couple gets to know themselves by exchanging their eyes, genitalia and facial features with Potatohead toys in Beyond the Mirror’s Gaze. Transforming Family is a snapshot of current issues, struggles and strengths of transexual, transgender and gender fluid parents in North American society today.

CLOSET LAND

Men’s Drama Shorts (USA, 80 min) Grind is a short film musical that takes a sexy and artistic look at the ways we connect in today’s multi-screened hook up culture and asks, “Do you really know who you’re talking to?” Late at night, a New York businessman must travel through hurtful memories and hopeful fantasies in order to ultimately find his way home in Cologne. When Vince tries to reconnect with his ex-best friend, Jesse, his coming out as a vampire is difficult for Jesse to take seriously and accept in Wannabe. In Erased, a young couple’s relationship comes to an untimely end when a mysterious figure erases one of them from existence. Narcissist is the story of a kind soul (Evan) who attracts a dark knight (Rob) into his life. It’s almost as it’s meant to be until Rob goes from a charming man to a manipulative individual who suddenly pulls the carpet out from under Evan, smashing his heart into a million pieces.

CLUB KING (112 min, USA)

For the last 20 years, club kingpin hunky and hot Mario Diaz (promoter/ actor/ dancer) has been throwing the hottest, sexiest, and most fun parties in the LGBT nightlife scene from New York to LA. Club King dives deep, and goes behind the scenes to find out what makes him tick and how he does it. Watch him balance the personal and professional while remaining fabulous at all times. As Diaz himself says, it’s a dirty job but somebody’s gotta do it. Preceded by: I’M A STRIPPER TOO, which follows the lives of male strippers in some of the sexiest cities in America. Each guy has been selected to create a dynamic perspective on the reality of making a living in the buff. Is it about money? Is it a sexual turn-on? How did they get here? What do their families and friends think? Do they take their work home with them? How much do they make? Is it competitive on the floor trying to get private dances? What is life like away from the club? How do they size up a client? How do our straight boys feel about dancing for dudes? And the gay boys dancing for ladies?

CRAZY BITCHES

(98 min, USA) With its remote setting in the mountains, the Benton Estate is known for being the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway—as long as you don’t mind the possibility that it’s haunted by the souls of murdered teenage girls. When seven former sorority sisters rent the property and invite their best gay, BJ, to join them for a vacation, true-crime fanboy BJ tells them the vacation rental’s history of horror upfront. Undeterred, the women settle in, excited for wine, a little nookie with the locals, and gossip with old gal pals.

DATING SUCKS

Transgender Shorts (Various Countries, 79 min) On his first foray out onto London’s thriving gay scene, newly single Adam meets Rocky. As the pair grow closer, something has to give, and the truth about Rocky is explosively revealed and the men are left to face the truth about themselves in Brace. Although twenty-nine year old Zoeie may be looking for the love of her life, there is hardly anything romantic about being Happily Ever Spinster. According to Mecs Meufs, when it comes to seduction, men are the weaker sex. Working off the suggestion of her once arch rival turned best friend, Lizzy suggests a game of Truth or Dare, only to realize perhaps some deep waters may have been better left uncharted. THE FOXY MERKINS

(81 min, USA) The Foxy Merkins is reminiscent of the sexy but tragic films Midnight Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho—films that define the male hustler genre. Except without the males. Or any identifiably effective hustling skills. Really, this film imagines what it would be like if everyday lesbians were out in the mean streets of New York with only their women’s studies degrees to keep them warm at night, forced to hustle in front of department stores in hoodies, always waiting for the next closeted Republican congresswoman to slip them a hotel room key.

FREQUENCY (USA, 90 min)

In the sci-fi world of Frequency, individuals have the ability to tune in to a frequency gaining them different skills, i.e. Clairvoyance, Telepathy, Time-travel, Healing, and Mental Manipulation. Claire Du Maurier (Meredith Sause) is a woman with the gift of clairvoyance. Trouble is, Claire can’t always trust what she sees and her mysterious phone mocks and teases her. Her vigilante past has her seeking redemption in the present as she races to save innocents from mishaps and bad fortune. Among her visions is her future life and love, a mysterious brunette, Deanna Shelley (Lisa Gagnon). Deanna Shelley is a self-assured woman with two real problems; she has tapped into a frequency that inundates her with the thoughts of others and her friend Travis (Anthony Hughes) kills her just as she discovers he is a carefree time traveler. With the help of sidekick Jackie (Kat Froehlich), a Healer, Claire is able to save her future girlfriend. Claire and Deanna must unravel the mystery of Deanna’s true origin and mission as Claire strives for redemption all while trying to convince Deanna and herself of their future together. Can love survive when influenced by the forces of multiverses, frequency, fate and free will?

HAPPY ENDINGS

Men’s Comedy Shorts (USA, 72 min) After convincing his husband to retire their old futon, Nelson is forced to come out in a new way while shopping for a new bed in Spooners. As they prepare for their wedding, Scott and Johnny reflect on their long-term relationship in The Best Man. Love, sex and relationships are seen through the eyes of two men; one in his 50s, the other in his 20s in Ageless. A bored couple tries to spice up their sex life with some movie-inspired role play—but the fantasy may be going a bit too far in Safe Word. A very queer retelling of Cinderella is told in Zolushka. After his 30th birthday, a man wakes up with both a massive hangover and a 17-year-old boy sleeping on his couch in Good Morning. Lizzy suggests a game of Truth or Dare, only to realize perhaps some deep waters may have been better left uncharted about her boyfriend Cole.

I ALWAYS SAID YES: THE MANY LIVES OF WAKEFIELD POOLE (101 min, USA)

An outspoken and articulate artist in a turbulent, passionate time, Wakefield Poole didn’t think of himself as a pornographer. He was a filmmaker who used his dance and theater background to create beautiful, erotic art films that challenged the mind. Many agreed. To others, though, Poole just made dirty movies. I Always Said Yes: The Many Lives of Wakefield Poole tells the story of this sometimes overlooked gay liberation and independent film making pioneer. In an era when anyone making, promoting, or appearing in what the US government considered “pornography” could be liable for prosecution and jail time, Wakefield Poole was a remarkably open and honest gay filmmaker. Preceded by: FIRE ISLAND 79 After he committed suicide on New Year’s Eve in 1979, most of experimental filmmaker Chase Hook’s work was destroyed by his ultra-conservative family. Just a few home movies (as well as the cassette tape from his answering machine) were all that was left.

I’M A PORN STAR

(120 min, Canada) I’m a Porn Star follows the lives of guys in the neighborhood who are likely a lot more famous than you - at least on the Internet. There are an estimated 370 million pornographic websites on-line. Porn is now a thirteen billion dollar business. So who’s doing all this moonlighting? Turns out — probably some people you know.

In an apartment building overrun by zombies, Aimee and Cynthia, a black lesbian couple, hide in a laundry room trying to figure out their next move in Goodnight My Love. Men’s Drama Shorts (US, 73 min) In On the Nature of Hotness, Dr. Richard Snyder examines the way people are evaluated for attractiveness in modern society. In the nearly wordless short film, Mum, a deaf swimmer—a regular at his gym’s pool—tries to attract a guy he has his eyes on, but wonders if his disability may get in the way. A recently-dumped young man goes on a European group tour and gets randomly assigned an intriguing and sexy Greek guy as a roommate. Will he get so distracted he misses finding true love in Foreign Relations? Matt, a young gay man, visits his grandfather at the assisted care facility where he now lives. Grandpa searches for pictures of his partner of 43 years, Carl, now dead, and strugggles with his memories of their life together in Home. When Ash invites his ex-boyfriend on a road trip to the Florida Keys, he doesn’t mention that their weekend getaway is actually a dangerous drug deal in Stay.

At first, Alex hates this remote place and the demanding job of looking after the horses. But under the tutelage of Nina, a 30-something taking a break from city life and her partner, Christine, Alex gradually comes to form a bond with the animals in her charge. Then Kathy arrives at the farm to take a holiday, bringing her own, beautiful horse with her. Alex takes an instant dislike to this privileged newcomer. Slowly, though, the barriers between the two are broken down and Kathy finds herself smitten by the streetwise and energetic Alex. The pair starts horsing around, larking about on the mudflats, until one weekend, when they’re alone at the farm, things spiral out of control. A coming-of-age story with girls and horses, under the lowering skies of northernmost Germany, by the ocean and close to the Danish border. German with English subtitles

(102 Min, USA) In the wake of legalization of gay marriage in her home state of New York, filmmaker Becca Roth is plagued by the fact that the majority of states in America currently have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage, including every single state in The South. Except one. When she finds out that residents in North Carolina are gearing up to vote on one of the most restrictive marriage amendments in the country, Amendment One, she and her girlfriend Melina travel to North Carolina in the two months leading up to the vote, to try to understand individuals on both sides and start a dialog among those who disagree with each other.

OUT IN THE NIGHT

(75 min, USA) One night in 2006, the lives of seven African American lesbians were ruined—after they were branded by tabloid newspapers as a “Gang of Killer Lesbians!” and subjected to prolonged entanglement with the criminal justice system, all arising from one questionable street altercation. The riveting documentary explores the notorious case of The New Jersey 4, named for the four of these seven women who pled not guilty to attacking a male “admirer” who threatened to “screw them straight” after they rebuffed his advances. Following the women’s lives over many years, the film takes the viewer on a dramatic and heart-rending journey as these women seek exoneration and justice.

OUT TO KILL

(82 min, USA) When gay private investigator Jim Noble moves into a beautiful loft complex in Tampa, he never expects to find his first case literally right outside his door - the corpse of up-and-coming singer Justin Jaymes floating in the pool right in the middle of the building’s courtyard. When he’s hired to solve the crime, Jim quickly learns that everyone in the complex has secrets, and that someone was willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden.

REAL HEROES

(84 min, USA) A comedy about B-string superheroes who go on a reality show in hopes of hitting the big time. Superman. The Dark Knight. Wonder Woman. This is not their story. This is the story of B-string superheroes hoping to hit the big time. The guys you’ve never heard of. The ones who go out every night fighting crime and hoping that someone will notice. The ones who are desperate enough to go on a reality show. This is the story of Sable, a single mom trying to juggle crime fighting, a moody teenage daughter, and a waitressing job. Of Big Shot, a macho marksman who can’t get over the breakup with his former sidekick. Of Malibu Action Girl, a spoiled rich kid determined to prove that she’s more than the sum of daddy’s expensive weapons. Of Water Warrior, a hunky hero trying to sleep his way to the top. Of Rick & Josh, former teen superheroes trying to put their past behind them. Of Psychic Sam and the Vixen and many more. This is a look behind the mask at the real lives of superheroes.

A SELF MADE MAN

(82 min, USA) A documentary film by Lori Petchers that takes a candid look at what it means to be transgender, told through an intimate portrait of trans youth advocate Tony Ferraiolo. Preceded by: A 51-year-old transwoman contends with the many challenges of returning to college basketball after a 30 year absence in Gender Games. The Cost of Gender is a multimedia project on the state of Transgender healthcare in the U.S. and why Americans are traveling abroad to get it. Three animators tell a story of transition—from male to female and from despondency to happiness. Using recorded interview material and representative artwork, Teagan touches on the fear and loneliness of living in the closet, and the joy and confidence that comes with stepping into the light.

SHE’S OUT OF CONTROL Women’s Mixed Shorts (US, 86 min)

In Lit, Eva and Jessie meet at a bar at last call and embark on a late night odyssey around San Francisco. What seems like it may be a one night stand goes in a different direction when Eva reveals it’s her last night drinking. A 10-year-old tomboy bests her brother’s loutish friends after they plan a mean prank in Bombshell. In One Night Stand, two women on a comic collision course learn that, sometimes, you wind up with more than you bargained for. Barb, aided by her best-ies Ally and Ellen becomes enamored with Carly, who she had met years ago in very different life circumstances in B2F. Love comes in every moment for Bella. In Sinaptica, Clara and Gio will ask themselves: keep dreaming and stay together, or do we wake up and live apart? Throw Like a Girl is the pilot of a mockumentary web series that follows a group of women who work at a small Bay Area startup selling sports bras. In Spin, making art and making a point can be equally aggravating. Politics can put people at opposite ends of the spectrum but love can make them move to the middle.

SUCH GOOD PEOPLE

(97 min, USA) Such Good People is a screwball comedy, about a couple, Michael Urie and Randy Harrison who find a million dollars while housesitting. These characters want what everyone wants: success, family and a fabulous house in LA. But first they’ve got to work through a few issues: greed, jealousy, real estate, sibling rivalry, greyhounds, labradoodles, porpoises, a million dollars, and the orphans of Bhutan.

THE TEN YEAR PLAN

(90 min, USA) Myles, a handsome and successful lawyer as well as a hopeless romantic, wants nothing more than to find the man of his dreams to share his life with. His best friend Brody, a hunky and hot Los Angeles police officer, sleeps with every man he meets in an attempt to avoid feeling unloved. Fearing what will become of them when they get older, the two friends make a pact: to be a couple in ten years if neither one has found true love.

TIGER ORANGE

(76 min, USA) Two estranged gay brothers attempt to make amends in Wade Gasque’s charming small-town drama. Set against the sun-kissed fields of Central California, and anchored by strong performances from Mark Strano and pornstar-turned-leading man Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard), Tiger Orange pits two diametric opposites against each other – the closeted introvert versus the out-and-proud hunk. The result is a blunt, playful meditation on queer sibling rivalry and the childhood bonds that force us together.

TO BE TAKEI

(US, 90 min) George Takei doesn’t shy away from digging into his remarkable career and personal life in Jennifer Kroot’s delightful and incisive film To Be Takei. As a child forced into Japanese-American internment camps, the actor-turned-activist reveals the ways that racism affected him well into his early acting career, where he played stereotypical Asian stock characters in film and television shows. Even after landing the iconic role of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, Takei’s sharp eye, coupled with his wicked sense of humor, continued to challenge the status quo well into the twenty-first century. Now at 76, nine years after formally coming out of the closet, Takei and his husband, Brad, have become the poster couple for marriage equality, highlighting homophobia through television interviews and hilarious skits, many of which have gone viral and garnered widespread attention. Whether dishing on William Shatner or parodying the now-infamous comments made by Tim Hardaway, Takei proves time and again why his presence in popular culture remains as fresh and necessary as ever.

TRU LOVE

(US, 94 min, 2014) Kate Johnston and Shauna MacDonald’s Tru Love is a sparkling and evocative love story about the intersecting lives of three women. Alice has recently lost her husband and, still coming to terms, has on the spur of the moment decided to visit her daughter Suzanne in the big city. When Suzanne – whose relationship with her mother is already conflicted – is too busy to spend time with her, she enlists friend Tru to babysit Alice while she works. A commitment-phobic lesbian, Tru forms an unlikely but deeply touching bond with Alice, helping her to pick herself up and move on with her life and the possibility of a relationship between the two sparks into life. When Suzanne witnesses a tender moment between mother and friend her subsequent actions stress the relationship of all three women, leading to a heartbreaking climax.

VALENCIA: THE MOVIE

(US, 104 min) Valencia: The Movie is a collaborative film project headed by Michelle Tea and filmmaker Hilary Goldberg. Twenty one queer filmmakers each shot a 5-7 minute short based on a chapter from Tea’s queer classic novel. Illustrator Amanda Verwey helps visually tie the work together with stunning portraits of the 21 “Michelle” characters who vary in age, gender, size, ethnicity, style and era! The 21 filmmakers include: Aubree Bernier-Clarke, Lares Feliciano, Hilary Goldberg, Sara St Martin Lynne and Michelle Lawler, Dia Felix, Silas Howard, Alexa Inkeles, Jerry Lee, Peter Anthony, Sharon Barnes, Cary Cronenwett, Courtney Trouble, Cheryl Dunye, Bug Davidson, Samuael Topiary, Olivia Parriott, Chris Vargas and Greg Youmans, and Jill Soloway.

WAITING IN THE WINGS: THE MUSICAL

(107 Min, USA) Two entertainers are mismatched in a casting office from two very different online contests. Tony, a beefy New York stripper, is cast in an Off-Broadway musical and needs to trade in his tear-away trunks for tap shoes and tights. Anthony, a slender, naive musical theatre enthusiast from Montana, needs to learn to strip all the way down. Hilarity ensues as they realize that “to make it” they need to learn some new tricks. Two dancers and two dreams makes for one very mixed up musical.

WHAT IT WAS

(86 Min, USA) In this multilayered film, Adina, a successful Latina actress, returns to New York after the death of her sister and the collapse of her marriage, causing her to drift as in a fog. Memories dissolve into the present as she tumbles through a series of intense, complex connections; with a sexy, butch body artist, a beautiful college student, and even a former girlfriend. With confident directing, assured performances, and gorgeous cinematography, What It Was masterfully conveys the emotional textures of Adina’s waking dream of a life. English and Spanish with English subtitles

fantASTIQUE MON , AUG 18 / LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD FRIED GREEN TOMATOES (US, PG-13, 1991, 137 min) Academy Award winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy star with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker in this inspiring drama adapted from Fannie Flagg’s best-selling novel. When an unhappy housewife (Bates) befriends a lady in a nursing home (Tandy), she hears a remarkable tale of laughter, devotion and a special friendship that defies all obstacles in this heartwarming film from acclaimed director Jon Avnet.

LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN (US, PG, 1985, 95 min)

Set in rural Texas, teenagers Billie Jean (Helen Slater) and her brother Binx (Christian Slater) are on an outing at the local swimming hole, when Binx's prize motor scooter is stolen by thugs. When Binx accidentally shoots the owner of the scooter store, the frightened teens take it on the lam. When the gang kidnaps rich amateur filmmaker Lloyd (Keith Gordon), however, the situation spins out of control. Billie Jean’s plight elevates into a national sensation, and even Lloyd's attraction to Billie Jean can't protect her from the media lightning rod she's become!

TUE, AUG 19 / JULIE AND BARBRA: TOGETHER AGAIN

VICTOR/VICTORIA (US, PG, 1982, 132 min)

On the verge of starvation in 1930s Paris, Victoria (Julie Andrews) is rescued by cabaret performer Toddy (Robert Preston). What she needs to succeed, opines Toddy, is a gimmick. What if she becomes a male impersonator? As "Victor/Victoria," she becomes the toast of Paree, and an object of fascination for bigtime Chicago gangster King Marchan (James Garner), who can't quite understand the teasing sensations he experiences whenever watching her in action.

WHAT’S UP DOC? (US, PG, 1972, 94 min)

What’s Up, Doc? joyously recaptures the bubbly style of 1930s screwball comedies and firmly established Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal as a romantic duo uniquely endearing in screen history. Included are a daffy luggage mixup plot, dippy dialogue exchanges, a marvelous example of the art of hotel-room demolition and one of the funniest chase sequences ever. Among comedy movies, it’s the top.

all Double features start at 7 p WED, AUG 20 / THE BITCH IS BACK MOMMIE DEAREST (US, PG, 1981, 129 min) Based on the 1978 tell-all memoir of the same name penned by Christina Crawford, the adopted daughter of Hollywood legend Joan Crawford, Mommie Dearest made a big splash. The younger Crawford details her iconic mother as a Hollywood heavy who beat her two children, demanded nonstop attention and allegiance from all, and was as generally insufferable at home as her public persona was popular at her height. No delicious detail is absent, from Mommie's notorious bed-hopping to her daily constitutional of ice and rubbing alcohol facials.

THE WOMEN (US, NR, 1939, 133 min)

Be careful what you say in private. It could become a movie. George Cukor directs an all-female cast in this catty tale of battling and bonding that paints its claws Jungle Red and shreds the excesses of pampered Park Avenue princesses. Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Joan Fontaine, Mary Boland and Paulette Goddard are among the array of husband snatchers, snitches and lovelorn ladies.

THU, AUG 21 / BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUTS

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (Australia, R, 1994, 104 min)

If there is a genre of serious camp, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is it. Yes, it's comedy. Obviously, we've got drag queens. But there is also a depth to Priscilla that most camp cannot match. It's a sentimental story dressed up in camp comedy, and lots of it. At its release, the irony was Terence Stamp as the transsexual Bernadette, he of tough guy fame. (Hello, General Zod?) Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce were relative unknowns. Generations of future movie lovers are in for a treat when the time comes to be asked, ''Did you know that Agent Smith from The Matrix and that guy from Memento got their start playing drag queens?''

John Waters’ POLYESTER (US, R, 1981, 83 min)

Francine Fishpaw (Divine) is a housewife whose life has become a living hell. Her husband Elmer runs a porno theater and is having an affair with secretary Sandra (Mink Stole). Francine's best friend, Cuddles (Edith Massey), is a slightly insane heiress who is somehow convinced she's a debutante. Francine's life has become so miserable that her dog commits suicide rather than witness it, but a light appears on the horizon—Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), the handsome and dashing owner of a local drive-in specializing in art films with whom Dawn enters into a torrid affair.
